physically broken phone - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an xperia play that works just fine. But a friend has asked me to look at his xperia play which has been physically damaged.
After looking through a few lil videos, I found out that when turning on the Xperia play, while the phone is on the SONY ERICSSON logo I can press BACK or SEARCH or the MENU button repetitively and it accesses the recovery menu. I was under the impression you had to hold the button down.
In any event...recovery mode isn't working on this physically broken phone. If you leave the SONY ERICSSON logo on too long, it eventually goes to this "static tv" screen.
I know it's a far shot...but is there any hope for this guy? I've plugged it into FLASH TOOL and it detects it...but any button I try and click on gives me an error message.

As far as I know, in a stock phone there isn't a recovery You need to install it (market, etc etc)
What error?

[Q]

I'm using the Xperia S, got it around March.
The power button is not working, it happened all of a sudden because it was working fine in the morning but then suddenly in the afternoon I wasn't able to unlock the screen.
Usually when the phone is asleep, to wake it up and unlock you need to press on the power button at the top left, but no matter how hard or how long i press, it is unresponsive. The only way that i can get to the unlock screen is through holding down the camera button and go through the camera to get back to the home screen to be able to use my phone.
The phone still works fine, as of now. Able to recieve incoming calls as the screen lights up to the swipe screen to answer when there is a incoming call. The only issue is that the power button seems to be broken.
I've called Sony support and they advised to connect to PC Companion and reboot/update there, but I'm not even able to turn off the phone since the button isn't working. I've tried to hold down power and volume up/down, but still nothing. The red light will blink periodically when i hold down the power and volume up/down, but still unresponsive.
The only other alternative is to send the phone back for repair, though I'm not sure what the repair should be.
Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions?????
i think its best to send to for a repair.
If you're rooted, you can download quick reboot from Play store, I think it has switch off option, but be AWARE that then you wouldn't be able to switch phone on again unless it will be repaired by PC Companion

I'd take it to repair. I don't think it's a software problem.
If you switch it off now via an app and take it to repair they might say you bricked it. Just leave it on to prove everything else is working fine.

You cannot boot it on flashmode since the screen is not turning on. Just vibrate right? and blackout screen? I know the problem is flex. I'm 90% sure . I had same problem then. You should bring it to the nearest sony repair center to be replace.
What is flex ?
So no chance to repair my phone by myself ?

No, unless you know how troubleshoot hardware parts. Flex is a cable that connects your lower part (touchpad) to the screen. Maybe it broke because of sliding the pad frequently. Now I don't use my pad or I slide it with much care now. I only use it once in awhile because I'm afraid to mess with it again. Since the xperia play is a 2011 product, the parts are also rarely available. You can call to the sony repair center if they have flex for your xperia play and you'll be lucky if you find one. They will tell you to call back for two weeks if they don't have because they will order it first. Try all the sony repair center on your city. But for now, try doing this: Remove your battery to be sure it is turned off, put it back, then charge it. When the led light turned on to the on/off button(usually orange when below 90%), then try sliding the pad. Try sliding it many times. It will turn on if your flex is slightly working. If the screen is still black, then the flex is totally broken.
You can boot into flashmode by holding back button and plug your usb(you phone should be turned off)if your power button led turn to green you boot to fastboot correctly
Then download the last firmware and flash it with flashtool

Xperia play: I can't turn my phone on because of the power button

Hi everyone I have a problem with my xperia play which has left me without a phone. As many of you may know about the problem you get when you have a faulty flexcable, well that happened to mine and we tried fixing it, it seemed to of worked but now when I try to press on my power button, it won't press down. I'm sure I know it's because inside the phone where you press the power button it had a small kind of black stick " I would say the motherboard, maybe I don't know" inside the power thing inside the phone. So basicly, when I try to press on the power button, nothing will happen, it won't press down or turn the phone on. Does anyone know how I can fix this or buy one of them small stick things? Any help would be great thank you
interesting topic with same problem as yours : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751123
Plug the charger in and your phone will start up

Two reasons:
-Button itself is damaged or have dirt where is suppose to make contact. If you don't know how to open your Play, leave that to proffesionals in repairs
-Flex cable is damaged. Replace it yourself or in repairs/service (wichever is avaible to you)
-Software error. Highly unlikely, but maybe. Flashing stock firmware will tell is it software error or not
The thing you can do to see what is damaged is next:
Power off phone and start flashtool in PC
Hold back button and doeas flashtool that you are in flash mode.
Repeat again, but this time with various combinations:
-press in different angle button itself (if it's button damaged, it might make contact in specific position)
-Open slider and see is back button working (in case of flex error, sometimes it works when slide is open, but not when slider closed)
-In case of software error, even circle button won't work as "back" in launcher/menues
Always remember costum roms can do anything

Circle on the gamepad acts as back button as well
