hey guys, i went canoeing today and i didnt notice my girlfriend brought my phone
She flipped the canoe. Sank my phone -.-
Now my screen is unresponsive and blinks. Take it back into sprint, right? well it turns on.. so they would check for other damage to the phone besides water damage right? so theyd turn it on..well thatd be okay, except i have a custom boot animation.. I could simple just odin back to stock but Idk why, perhaps the waterdamage.. but odin wont work, itll recognize it sometimes, and when it does itll just check the MD5..
So i cant odin to stock and they can easily tell its rooted..will they refuse to work on it? or should i perma-brick it or something? any ideas lol.. im stuck without a phone for two weeks either way
hopefully we have ICS source by then =P
Water damage isn't covered by the store as part of regular warranty. You'll have to call the insurance company.
Water damage voids insurance. Report it stolen

Don't report it stolen. They may require a police report.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
they will take it apart and find the water markings, and corrosion. lost / stolen would get you the same result... file a claim with Asurion if you have TEP. sprint.com/protection. it's a $100.00 deductible.
also, Sprint does not have a policy against rooted devices. it doesn't matter if it is stock or not.

Just call the insurance company and tell them the truth. You'll have to provide a police report if you report it lost (I believe), and it's a felony to file a false police report.
You don't have to show a police report if it's lost. I know from experience as I did this last month.

Rooting is covered as stated by someone else. The other thing you have to take into account, would running stock have kept the phone from being ruined? Would you have been able to restore it any better? No, you didn't kill it by flashing something. If they give pushback print out the memo that's posted and use my reasoning.
Must be that kind of weekend. My phone got submerged in water yesterday but surprisingly when I took the cover off it seemed pretty dry. Shaking the phone I could hear water so I sat it out in the sun for about 45. Slapped the battery back in and here I sit playing with my phone like nothing happened. Who said Samsung build quality sucks?!!!!!!!!!

How long have you had your phone? Because I'm pretty sure if it's longer than a month they won't replace it for free. So you have to go through the insurance anyways so it shouldn't matter what u say. But if you just got the phone the only thing that sprint looks at right away is a indicator in on your battery that changes color when water damaged.
So if your within your free replacement period buy a battery take it to sprint and tell them it wont boot. And yes I've taken rooted devices so far as to where the sprint rep got it into CWM mod and didn't say a thing. (prob didn't know what it was)
FYI I was still learning how to root and flash so needless to say, it wasn't the first or last phone I got a phone replaced. And they sent me a free replacement no questions asked. but if you can hard brick that would probably be in your favor. And FYI other than water or intentional damage. Samsung has a year warranty on there phones. I know because we just sent my buddy's et4g for the power button sticking. Reason why I don't usually buy insurance.

Okay guys... Well Long story short my phones screen doesn't work anymore.
Long story: I was using my phone like usual and when I was finished I put it in my Pocket. I dIdnt realize I had a credit card in that pocket as well, next thing I know I take the phone out and between the screen and the keyboard is the credit card wedged between. I take it out thinking it'll all be fine but when I slide the keyboard Out I hear what sounds like crumbling paper and I look at the back of the phone and there is this black tape looking thing sticking Out From the phone. And now my screen doesn't come on...
I have no warranty I'm just under the one year. What will I have to pay to get this fixed?
I know on inssurance its free but for a new screen its around 50 but what you describe is like you unattatched the whole top half of the phone almost and you'll need a new phone. =[ I think the paper sound is the connection of the display to the phone board.

I bricked my T989 by trying to flash a ROM for the I9100 (I somehow failed to notice that the ROM was not for T989). After unsuccessfully trying to revive it I requested a warranty replacement from TMO. Does anyone have any perspective on the likelihood that TMO will hit me with a big fee if/when Samsung notices that the phone was previously rooted? Does Samsung look for that or do they just reimage the device without poking around?
I replaced a rooted g1 with no problem. They do hit you with a $130 deductible though.

The customer service rep I spoke to today said that there would be a $100+ fee if the phone has cosmetic issues (which mine does not) so hopefully I won't get hit with the deductible.

You're confusing warranty with insurance. The deductible only applies to insurance, for which there is no concern regarding rooting damage. Insurance will cover any damage or loss. Warranty is specifically for when the manufacturer has issued a faulty device. In the OP's case, negligent damage should not be covered by warranty, since the manufacturer is not at fault, however they will most likely not even look twice at the device and just replace it. I have seen countless folks brick their phones and just play dumb for a replacement. This, in part, is why they now charge a $20 warranty exchange fee.

are u at least able to turn on the phone? turn on meaning the phone comes on instead of full boot. if so,u are soft bricked and can fix thru Odin. I wouldn't waste my warranty exchange on a soft brick as its 100% fixable. the refurb unit u may receive will only hhave a 90 day warranty vs the 1yr that comes with ur origina purchase.

I dont know whats wrong with my phone it just stopped turning on.
Ive Changed the battery because a friend of mine has the same phone and I also changed the storage card because I have had several of them.. Im not too sure how to handle this situation because I know ive never dropped it in water or anything, I dont think I have ever even dropped it, I keep it in a case.
They will say,
Welp looks like you have tried everything can you take out the battery what color is the water damage indicator?
You tell them white (Given that it is indeed white)
They will say okay well we can send you a new phone, (or the next best whatever your case may be) and you give them your IMEI number, and read you the script which I almost have memorized and then they charge you 5 bucks for next day delivery to your next bill, and when your phone comes brick your old handset and send it back!

Don't know much as to the why's and what not's, all I know is they charge it unless you have full insurance in which case they only charge $5. Most likely to offset the cost of people abusing the system by ruining their own devices and then getting a replacement.

Well, needless to say I'm bricked... I got the blue light of death on my E4GT and when I went into sprint they started taking my phone apart and found a tiny water spot on the board. Referred me to Asurion and sent me on my way. I was not very happy with having to spend $100 dollars to file an insurance claim. I was wondering if I should go to a different sprint store or since the first tech cleaned the board to try again for a replacement or should I just ship it off to Samsung since I'm still under the 1 year warranty?
What is everyone else's experience with obtaining a replacement from sprint with TEP or sending out to Samsung for repair?

I was working on helping to port Sense 4.0 and forgot to Odin back to el26 to flash a working rom. Flashed cm9 using an unsafe kernel and locked up the emmc. Blue light of death, no download mode, no recovery.
Now, back to my question about Samsung warranty...
Sent from my piece of crap Zio until i get a replacement E4GT using XDA Premium app
I bought a phone off of craigslist, unfortunately the data could not be set up by sprint and I paid the 100 bucks to get a new/refurbed one. So for 100 plus the 150 I paid... it was worth it. The good thing about the insurance is that you can practically do anything with it and get a replacement.
I would like to know how you bricked it as well, because I've done things which I thought it was bricked but found out I was still able to somehow get it into recovery mode or do a Odin recovery. One time it drained my battery so I could not even charge it, but luckily a friend had a Galaxy S phone and charged my battery for me. Now I have 3 batteries and a battery charger too. LOL!
If you can get into download mode you can still fix it, but but you'll loose 2gigs of space and currently its not a permanent fix
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Try sending a PM to newalker91 about the issue and see if he can offer any advice about dealing with Sprint before going the Asurion route. In the meantime you can restore functionality if it boots by using an alternate .PIT file - you'll lose 2.9 GB of storage but hopefully keep $100 if he can help you out.
It doesn't boot at all... I just have a blue light, screen stays dark, if I try booting into anything the light flickers and then a steady blue. I have an old USB connector, could I get into download mode with a jig? I can get some resistors and make one if that would let me use Odin for the pit file.

I set my phone down on the counter one day to charge and didn't notice that my roommate had just made a mixed drink and left ice on the counter that melted... as soon as I noticed that the counter had liquid on it I quickly picked up my phone and took out the battery and let everything dry. I would say that it wasn't there for more than a minute before I noticed.
I just contacted Samsung today about getting a shipping label so that I can send it in for repair, I guess I'll have to go into a UPS store now and have them print the label and I'll need to purchase a box to ship it in.
My only question now is, Since the Sprint tech cleaned the board with whatever kind of alcohol they use, Will Samsung notice that it was ever wet and will I be charged anything for the repair since it is an issue with the eMMC?

Maybe he didn't want to help me because there was some girl there with a smashed screen on her phone at the same time for repair, funny thing about that is he was willing to work with her when she said that her boyfriend intentionally smashed her phone.
I'm just going to send it back in to Samsung... I'm no longer with Sprint because of this. They lost me as a customer because of this.
I had a unfortunate mishap with the note 2 lat night. It is rommed but i cant take it back to stock now because it wont even turn on. do i call tmo and tell them i lost it, or i dropped it and get one coming in the mail? or when i send it back is it SOP for tmo to fix it and wipe it and then reflash from the fctory or will i get a huge bill when they find out it was rommed?
any input from anyone who knows first hand would be awesome. cant rock my old sensation for to long now.
Do you really need the opinion of "XDA" to tell what to do, in a situation like this?
It you dropped your phone and it won't turn on, just leave it on the shelf. You said you had another phone. Okay that's a wrap. Have a nice day.
I'm lost. Tmo will fix the glass for you. I'm sure you will have to pay either way because that's not a warranty item. If you're asking if you should commit fraud by claiming it's lost, then no. You broke it pay the price. If you're doing that I'm assuming you have insurance so then no need to lie anyways because insurance should cover glass.

The guy has Insurance.. He is not Trying to get it fixed for free. He paid his insurance to pay for accidental drops.. Just like your car you crashed. If you had insurance you have a RIGHT to file a claim..
As far as samsung and carrier voiding warranty for it being rooted Yes they can. But i would think insurance for a ACCIDENT Repair that is clearly not the Fault of the phone being rooted. I Would think they will fix it. I know for a Fact a warranty like square Trade will fix it..
Wish i could tell you for sure But i have never warrantied to a carrier only to insurance company and only once. It was a Nexus 7 tablet ..
Good Luck..
One more thing.. No matter the outcome DO NOT LIE .Do not say you lost it.. That is very unfair.and is partly what drives prices up on insurance..

The consensus had been that damage is damage in regards to insurance. The software status hasn't mattered in the past (unless CM10 suddenly makes you toss phones out of the car on the freeway).
You are not eligible for a warranty replacement as there is glass breakage. You have insurance, use it for the legitimate claim you have a right to make. This is an obvious replacement for the insurance guys.
In any case, as said before, don't lie.

Just to update everyone, I called tmo and they shot me over to asurion. they were really cool on the phone about this whole thing. she never asked anything about the software side of it.So i asked her about it just to know because i am not one to try to commit fraud an i appologize for giving that impression in the OP. She said that would not be an issue. Super good service thru Asurion with a long survey at the end.
I do appologize for a few of my replies yesterday. I guess the comment on rooting voiding the warranty thru people off but i was just stating that, not meaning i was gonna send it in for warranty replacement. Thanks again for giving your thoughts on this matter.
Glass shattered has nothing to do with what OS your phone runs. You have a hardware issue, not software.
Trying to get warranty work done because you bricked your device cuz you flashed a wrong rom, that would be an issue because your warranty covers you being on a stock device that should otherwise be working up to their standards they gave u warranty for.
My ex shattered my heart but I still turn on, your phone is being difficult lol

I just drop my phone and I called tmobile. So they going to send me a new phone because the phone works fine but the screen inside is black in some areas. The phone is rooted and there is a custom recovery. I was planning to unrooted but the black eventually completely blacked out. So im wondering if they will find out its rooted and charge me for the new pbone that is exchanged to me? the phone still operates normally but the screen is blacked out almost 98% of the screen. so i can still flash via Odin and bring back to stock and official recovery and reset counter?

Odin it back to stock, as I'm sure they'll probably send you the phone back when they see its not stock
Just an FYI, the black part of the screen thats getting worse is the screen being cracked and damaged and bleeding out.
The heading of this thread is Warranty Exchange, So just a heads up, if someone in the store sees its a broken screen and sees any scuffs on it they will deny your warranty claim. Theres also a good chance the people in the store wont notice but once it gets back to TMO or Samsung they might reject the "warranty" as its physical damage and considered customer abuse. Just a heads up. Not sure if you knew that or not.
Warranty covers defects of manufacturing and some software problems.
Dropping your phone and breaking the screen is not a warranty issue.
When t mobile figures out that the amoleds broken there going to charge you. When you call that's one of the first few things they ask..... water indicators, imei & physical damage. (Screen)...

I'd return the phone they send out and contact Samsung for screen replacement. They will do it right and are reasonably priced.

If im not mistaken tmobile only cares that the phone isn't broken or has not been dropped in water.

Ok whats the point of me having 11.95 add to my phone bill every month. Why they are doing a warrenty exchange then? I told them the screen is not crack but inside it is black the strange part that I can slide my fingure to unlock the phone because I have sound unlock enable and I can still able to shut it down and put it in download mode in pitch black screen. But i manage to flash via odin back to stock.

Oh grasshopper, you are early in the warranty process. The reason they are doing the exchange is because you didn't tell them the problem started when you dropped the phone. Don't be surprised if you get a bill after a few weeks when they actually work on your phone. Damage is damage whether you can see it externally or not.
Oh, and why the $12 a month extra? Because of situations like the one you are in right now.

I believe all they will charge you it's 175.00 that's the price for the asurion replacement

175.00 is better than paying 750.00 +/- for a new note lol...

So lets help the original poster by also clearing up a few things.
Warranty is for when a device fails due to manufacturer defect. NOT related at all to what you have.
To address the issue of you paying 12 bucks a month. Thats called Insurance. NOT Warranty.
What will happen is you need to file a claim with the carrier and / or insurance company, more then likely its Asurion.
You will then pay a deductible, as another person has metntioned its in the 150-200 range. They will send you a replacement device, most likely refurbished, and you send in the broken. Then your done.
To address the screen touch still working, you did not damage the glass or the touch sensor part which is built into the glass. You broke the LCD when you dropped it.
The LCD has nothing to do with touch sensing, the LCD is only a display. Again, if you failed to tell them that you dropped the device then they will think its a warranty issue and the display stopped working. But the display didnt stop working, it got broken when you dropped it.
So if they have approved a warranty claim, eventually someone will see its broken and deny the claim and send it back or you will see a huge charge on your account to have it fixed or replaced.
Im trying to help educate you and others so you can make better decisions in the future as educated consumers. When you signed a contract for the phone and paid for insurance you should have asked many questions including how these things work. If not thats what were here for, to help.
When I received my replacement from asurion it was new (sealed box all accessories) so it's hit or miss being a refurb or new

That is the insurance with warranty & security prem pkg. With screen damaged you go through the insurance services. Not the warranty part. Going at this the wrong way will cost you more than going at this the correct way.
PHP Ins. ($7.79), MSec & Wrty ($4.20) Prem Dev by Asurion = $11.99
