Trouble with Windows 7 USB connection - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My laptop pretty much does not connect to the USB port of my epic now that I'm using Windows 7. The same laptop when dual booted into Linuxmint 12 gives no indication that there had ever been a problem. Except of course, I can't use Linuxmint to Odin.
Side-Question: Linux users, can Odin be made to work with Wine? Or with a Virtualbox Windows installation?
In Windows 7 I am not even able to connect as mass storage. I continuously get the message that the USB device is not configured properly.
I'm using the driver from the Samsung website.
Has anyone had a similar problem?

Hmmm... dial ##8778# and make sure usb is set to pda and not modem...

You can use Hiemdall for Linux. Also do you have the correct drivers for the epic? If not that could be one reason. Do you have multiple phone drivers installed? That could be an issue as the epic is picky. If you have any other phone drivers uninstall reboot reinstall epic drivers reboot and then attempt it. If that doesnt work try another port or USB cable. What cable are you attempting this with? If stock try another good thick cable.

[Q] Laptop won't recognize phone

my computer does not recognize my epic anymore. I have the required drivers for it , but it keeps on popping up as an unknown device. I also made sure usb debugging was left unchecked. I have been trying to connect for a few hours now but still no luck.

What OS are you using on your laptop? If it's windows go to control panel and your programs add/remove (will vary depending on windows version) scroll down to "Samsung USB drivers" and click "uninstall", then reboot. Go to here and download the most recent usb drivers again. Plug in your phone, then install the drivers.
Post your results. Most likely it is not your phone, its a driver that has become corrupt on your laptop. Other possibilities are a bad USB cable or port on your phone.

Have you tried a different USB cable? Did you make any changes to your phone or PC just before it stopped recognizing it?
I had to use a usb hub with a power source for my laptop to see the phone.
Dell D620
Samsung Epic 4g
same thing on my pc. I keep getting USB Mass Storage Device Failed Error Code 10. started happening after the first push of froyo. im running Windows 7. very frustrating.
Epic thread revival!
I'm having a similar issue with my Epic. Both my laptop and desktop will recognize my phone as "Samsung CDMA Technologies" However, I can't do anything with it except charge. What's particularly bugging me is
A) Wired (USB) Tether won't work
B) Can't mount SD card through the phone
Laptop Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Linux Mint 11 64bit (I'm having the same problems with Linux)
Phone Specs:
Epic 4G (SPH-D700)
Syndicate ROM Frozen 1.2
EG22 Moden
Genocide 2.0 Kernal
Here is what I've tried:
Toggled USB Debugging (both on and off)
Used Premium Micro USB cable in addition to stock cable
Uninstalling and Reinstalling drivers
used different USB ports
rebooted phone and computer
It should be worth noting that my phone seems to think everything is a-ok. Wired Tether app doesn't report errors, and when I mount SD card, there is no error either and the phone proceeds with the "USB storage in Use" message. My computer (regardless of which OS I boot) seems to think my phone doesn't exist, unless I'm doing admin type of things, such as flashing via Odin.
Normally, when I had my previous Epic (SRF 1.0.1, EC05, Twilight Zone Kernal), before it was stolen, Wired Tether worked perfectly, especially with Linux (connect as "AutoUSB 0"), and I could mount my SD card.
Suggestions?
Go to control panel and have it update drivers from Windows Update. Takes a long time to get them all.
I get the feeling it's more than a simple driver issue. I have the same problems with Linux, and linux has native drivers. And Windows Update is useless. It can't even find drivers for my fingerprint reader. Nevertheless, I will try it next time I'm on my laptop. Windows on my desktop is fubar.
I had the same issue with my pc.. I ended up using an old vista lapptop and everything worked perfectly.. sometimes these pc's just straight out don't work with these drivers.. wish I could help you out more man

Maybe dialing ##8778# and selecting modem mode under the usb section will help automtically install drivers.. see if that works, it helped me out for the whole epic to boost mobile process

[Q] Epic won't root or show in 'My Computer'

Hi.
Have Boostmobile Epic that came unrooted.
Downloaded drivers and phone shows in device manager under com ports.
Tried 11 USB cables then saw a video from qbking and bought a blackberry to use its cable making it 12 cables, none work.
Tried 2 computers with Vista and Win 7 x64.
Epic won't communicate with either comp with debugging on or off.
As i said in topic, one click root won't work. Says Phone is not connected.
I also cannot sideload content onto SD card because it does not show in My Computer.
It has been flashed to boost so i assume it has communicated with a PC in the past.
What can i do to fix this?
Reboot pc and phone then try again. If that doesn't work then uninstall drivers from pc then install again. Reboot pc after install after reboot plug in epic then wait for it to finish installing drivers then reboot both again then use odin.
You can also connect the phone with usb debugging on, then go into device manager on the computer and look for "other" or samsung android in USB section. Click on that and select update drivers and let windows update search and install drivers...it takes awhile.
just did the uninstall drivers then reboot both thing.
Driver installation shows device ready to use as...
SAMSUNG USB Composite Device
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem #2
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM5)
All ready to use.
But Still not showing in my computer for file transfer or working in usb debugging mode for root.

Try the update driver choice in device manager. The CDC driver is missing. I think it loads 5 drivers if I remember correctly with USB on...yeah the mass storage driver is missing too. Let Windows update find them all.

Hi, thanks for help.
Just tried uninstalling everything and letting windows find drivers. Windows found a different driver package from S3 studio or something but I still get no mass storage or root.
I've read you can root and install roms without a computer Guess that will have to be my route.
As far as mass storage goes... It's annoying but I pulled the back off and put SD card directly into computer
You are sliding down the pulldown on your epic screen and pushing mount sd card for mass storage right?

Yeah, the robot pic turns from green to orange but it never actually connects to either computer.
Going to my brothers house soon to check his 2 computers, he says his Thunderbolt will only work on one.

Some computers are finicky and will only work on the USB port used to install the drivers. Odin only works on the left side of my laptop and mass storage works on the right...go figure!
The fact that the phone thinks it connects and the computer probably makes the connection noise shows there is still a driver problem. Did you reboot the computer and phone after the full driver installation?
Yes I restarted both several times while installing/uninstalling
Drivers... I have just accepted that I need to remove the card to sideload content.
On a side note, I am now afraid to root my phone and change the roms because I'm on boostmobile and will be unable to connect phone to a computer to fix if something goes wrong.

after you install drivers, reboot, then plug in your phone w debugging on, it should install a bunch of drivers, then take forever on modem, unplug and replug the usb from the phone really fast, this should trip it up into moving to the next device... there should be at least two or three more. If you have GB loaded for some reason the RNDIS drivers are wonky. Make sure you use a USB port on your motherboard, not on a PCI, not on a front port... the drivers are acting weird lately, like they changed em up a bit... idunno... but once you get a setup, dont mess with it! Hope somethin helps... Its almost guaranteed the drivers, unless the Boost is the issue, idunno...
ive had that same problem ever sense ive got the phone, what if you havent given up there is another way for you to connect to your computer. It is very simple and fast it is how i connect now and it works every time.
1. Have computer on and Phone off
2. Boot your phone into ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 (Power/camera/volume down)(it must be this version of clockwork)
3. Go to mounts and storage
4. On the bottom of the menu you must click mount usb storage.
5. Plug your phone into the computer and your computer should recognize your phone now.
Also if your on Vista / Win7 you should run the command line (cmd) or the bat file to root with admin rights: Right click cmd or the run.bat and select run as administrator and that hould help.

I don't think the drivers for samsung are 64 bit compatable. If you got the drivers from samsung it should state that.

[Q] laptop wont recognize epic in download mode?

i have downloaded the drivers for windows vista 64 bit and odin still will not recognize device....it sais that the usb device is not recognized.....that windows has encountered an error? what should i do? i have tried everything?
do you have a different cable you can try? you sure you installed the drivers?
If all else fails, you can usually force install generic drivers to get Heimdall to work. There are a couple guides around that walk you through how to setup and use Heimdall for flashing.
Make sure USB debugging is on, then connect phone to computer. If new drivers are not installed try going into Device Manager and to USB section and find Samsung Android. Try to update driver using Windows Update. This should find and install 5 drivers. Composite CDC takes the longest.

Windows won't recognize t989

Hello all!
First: I promise I searched the forums and google as hard as I could!
I'm running AOKP JB with CWM, although the problem was present on stock ICS from T-Mobile.
Symptoms: Computer and phone will refuse to acknowledge any connection (nothing shows up in Device Manager), except the phone will still charge. If I do the "remove the battery with USB plugged in" trick, the first time I do it, it will recognize an unknown device, but kies and adb won't recognize it. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it'll go back to not acknowledging any connection.
I previously programmed it (when I was still running stock ROM) via ADB via WiFi, but I need to be able to use ADB via USB. Besides, I can't seem to get ADB over WiFi anymore.
When I plug it into a different computer (Win7), it will, however, recognize my phone.
Earlier this year, before I ever tried programming via WiFi, it connected to my Win8 machine with no problem. I don't think it's a problem with the wifi setup though because the ROM was reinstalled and of course I've restarted ADB in USB mode in the months since...
What I've tried:
Reinstalling Kies
Reinstalling Samsung USB drivers
[^]Restarting the ADB server
Updating ADB
Trying different USB cables
Trying different USB ports
Toggling USB debugging
Toggling MTP mode
The UART thing from the dialer
Restarting the phone and the computer (of course)
Checking to see if my computer's USB drivers need to be updated
The android terminal command "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb"
Pulling and replacing the battery while connected via USB
Crying in a corner
If anyone can help me, it'd be greatly appreciated! I'm all out of ideas and Google is no longer helpful =/
try to uninstall the drivers that are present anything samsung related to your drivers ... then connect the phone and let the process do its thing if you have the samsung drivers saved on your PC and the drivers still aint working update the drivers and then manually click where the drivers are to install them and hopefully it will work and when you tried MTP is it the only option it gives you no storage or anything ??... and is usb debugging on when you are trying all this ??

I tried on my work computer that didn't have any samsung drivers and when the "unknown device" dialog popped up it didn't do anything or install anything, nor did it show up in Device Manager. Unplugging and replugging it back in did not reproduce the dialog box. Togged USB Debugging and still no dialog box saying it recognized it.
The thing with the samsung drivers is that they're self installing so even if it popped up in Device Manager, I wouldn't be able to manually update the drivers =/
I tried MTP both with and without USB Debugging, although it also gives the option for PTP.
At this point do you think I should unroot and go back to stock? It's not been recognized on three computers now! =[
Are you using the stock cable? My computer wouldn't recognize mine without it.

Both the stock cable and a generic cable.
Similar problem
Similar problem as the OP. And hi guys, it's nice to be on these forums.
My device, when I plug it in using the stock cable, doesn't even charge. It doesn't show up in device manager, nor does it give me a notification, or say it's unsupported and bear that yellow icon. I have tried using different USB ports, I have tried the toggling USB debugging, I have tried restarting phone, computer, and taking out battery. I have tried that PDA/MODEM dialer trick. I am using 4.1.2 Jellybean, not rooted. (that WAS my goal,, until I hit this roadblock) I have not connected it to the computer in the past, it's relatively new. I'm thinking the cable is bust.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. It charges fine through a wall outlet plug, be it generic or stock.
so guys ive come to a conclusion i think its something in the samsung usb cables try getting yourself a blackberry usb cable , TRUST ME !!! ever since i got my phoness etc... tablet and yadi yadi samsung usb cables have always seemed to give me problems i think its because they are multi data/charging cables and when using the blackberry usb cable i have never ever once encountered a problem with any of my phones sd/storage problems do yourself a favor and pick up one of those cables and you will be golden !! if not then i guess im the only lucky one :LOL here you go http://www.amazon.com/Blackberry-Travel-Adapter-Micro-Cable/dp/B004VMVSYK/ref=pd_sim_cps_2 5 bucks!
Edit also one more test boot into recovery and click in the advanced menu and see if mount usb works for you in recovery mode ??
FIX (try using a generic cable)
I actually solved it on my own! After borrowing a generic cable from a friend it booted up! The Samsung cable was just not doing its thing.
yeah im telling you those cables they provide are JUNK!!! i only use my samsung to charge because they do that well but data they are str8 CRAP!! glad you got it up and going
OP
Hope OP will have the same luck as me...pray to the Android gods...

[A] USB Device Not Recognized

Hey Guys,
So im having an issue for when i try to connect my note 2 running Jedi X20 to my windows 8.1 computer i get an error stating "USB Device Not Recognized". I have tried everything from trying different cables, downloading drivers, deleted and reinstalling drivers, checking to see if my phone is set to PDA, trying factory reset in TWRP, etc. i was wondering if anyone has successfully fixed this issue and they could help me.
I am trying to get my device connected so ODIN may recognize my device so i can revert it back to Stock.

Have you tried the USB ports on the back of the PC? If so....
Maybe try updating the drivers for the motherboard of your PC instead of using standard Windows 8.1 drivers. Assuming Windows 8.1 is recognizing all the USB ports you are trying to plug your cable into.
If this does not work and you have a copy of Windows 7, download Virtualbox and install Windows 7 as a virtual machine. Launch it make sure you have the USB settings inside the virtual machine setup to allow the USB to be used from Host PC.
Load the Samsung drivers in the Windows 7 virtual machine. I'm assuming those are the drivers you have stated you have downloading and reinstalled.
Sorry meant to say it's a laptop. Tried all ports and installing drivers. Unfortunately I don't have windows 7
