EVO Design 4G (Boost Mobile) - May 31st - MSM8655 w/ ICS - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Looks like the HTC Evo Design 4G is launching (or re-launching, depending on how you look at it) on Boost Mobile, May 31st. This phone uses our chipset / processor - MSM8655 - and will launch with ICS / Sense 3.6.
I believe this is the first phone that uses the same chipset as ours that will have ICS. I'd imagine that an update for ours would also be in tow, as that means HTC has already finished a proper ICS / Sense 3.6 rom for our chipset (albeit different screen resolution, qHD). I'm also thinking that our devs (might?) could use this to build a 3.0 kernel for our phone.
Thoughts?
EDIT: Also of note, Sprint's VP of Product said the Sprint variety of the phone will get ICS in June. http://blogs.computerworld.com/20152/sprint_android_40_htc_evo_3d_htc_evo_design_4g
So that also bodes well for us (not taking into account VZW's suckiness in deploying updates)

its possible *something* could come of their kernel source, but who knows
really we will ultimately need our own kernel source (not even our cousin inc s/dhd/desire s source) to build a functional 3.xx kernel with working radio....not that its impossible i guess, but what is actually likely
as for pulling the rom itself, it would have to be resized to scale properly (unless htc included hdpi images in all the apks (unlikely), and if we really wanted sense 3.6 i could have ported it from the sensation xl (didnt seem worth it, since we ll ultimately get our own version at some point, and sense 4 is so much better imo)
but the best take away is what you said: that its good to see htc has ics going on our chipset...which is always a positive

[Q] Wiimote + 4G question... Is this even possible?

I know there is tons of threads on this. I understand CM6 is basically all we got. Right? CM6 is great and all... But the lack of 4G is a killer, i use it frequently. So i just cant live without it... Its nice to have when you are downloading Big ROMs (psx) for the emulators our phone is so good at playing.... But, DAMN did I love the Wiimote support on CM6! It basically made any other form of Emulation obsolete for me. CM6 is a godsend for emulators... But it lacks the bandwidth I need/want to download ROMs (among other things I.E. Youtube HQ).
It seems like i got to choose between 4G and Wiimote support. Why cant we (functionality) all get along, the EVO can do it. But, Why can't it do it at the same time?
So my question is... How do I get Wiimote support and 4G on my EVO? Does anyone have BOTH of these capabilities?
Btw, my current ROM that i have been nestled into for about 3 weeks is VaelPaks ROM. And I'm getting itchy to Flash something new, but only if it meets this criteria.. or I wont be making an upgrade in my eyes... Doesn't anyone else feel the same?
4G was cobbled and spliced together by HTC. There's no good documentation on how to implement it and HTC is not required to release the source code or any documentation to support 4G. The only way to enable 4G in a ROM like CM is to essentially reverse engineer it - not an easy task. The Evo is also only one of 2 phones released so far with 4G. Worse still is that Sprint is using WiMax technology and is thus far the only significant carrier in the world to commit to WiMax. Pretty much everyone else is going with LTE, so there will be less development on WiMax devices.
The HTC software that comes with working 4G also comes with HTC's special Bluetooth software. The HTC Bluetooth implementation does not include the Bluetooth HID support that is needed for wiimote or keyboard support. Unfortunately, it's also not a simple matter of replacing the Bluetooth software because HTC's Sense permeates the Android system and doesn't play nice.
Based on the way things are going, CM6 is your best bet for eventually getting wiimote and 4G in one ROM. Sadly, 4G support was dropped from the upcoming 6.1 release of CM. Development of 4G probably won't start again until 6.1 is finalized. Personally, I'm worried that Cyanogen will end up working on other devices (e.g. the T-Mobile G2) or that Gingerbread will be released. The longer that CM goes without 4G support, the less likely it will ever happen. Eventually the Evo will become obsolete or at least, a lower priority.
Another possibility is to look into dual booting 2 ROMs. Not nearly as good a solution as having it all in one ROM, but certainly less time consuming than nandroid.

[Q] Will the G2/Vision get Gingerbread?

I don't know what else you could really change in android to make it better other than updates for software outside of it's reach (flash, html, that stuff) but they are more than likely rolling out newer firmwares in the future.
Now my question is do you think us new G2 owners will get the update when it comes out? I've heard that it's only on stronger chipsets (namely 1ghz) even though we're on a second generation cpu we're not exactly up to par. Also not to mention, if history repeats itself we may not get the full package like the predecessor G1. (only went to 1.6) while it's almost identical twin the MyTouch 3G recently got a 2.2 update.
Anyways what do you think will happen?
1 ghz was never required, just recommended. Once the source is released I'm sure Cyanogen will merge it into CM.
Also, the G2 can be superclocked!

[Q] Question on Processor

Hi, I am looking at buying an HTC Wildfire S to activate on Virgin Mobile. I want the Qualcom MSM8227 (not the 7227 that most Wildfire S phones have). The specific phone is released on US Cellular.
Code:
htc dot com/us/products/wildfires-uscellular/
I can get it unlocked on Amazon for $200-$250. I BELIEVE it is the A510e but I have seen differing specs, so any Wildfire with the 8227
Code:
amazon dot com/HTC-A510e-Unlocked-Android-Bluetooth/dp/B0055DXZZY/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
My two questions:
Is the 8227 as great as it is made out to be? What version ARM is it?
Will I be able to activate it on VM (again, I'm buying unlocked, I'm more asking people's experience with non-carrier-branded devices on Virgin)? (if not, what prepaid service can I in the USA, I'm not tied to Virgin Mobile, and their utter lack of Google Voice integration steams my peas).
Bonus: Given the hardware difference, what are my chances of easily attaining S-OFF and Root and flashing a custom (Ideally Cyanogen) ROM on it. I'd kill for CM9 but I have my EVO 3D and ThinkPad Tablet for that (eventually), CM7 would be nice, even CM6 would be very acceptable.
I ended up buying a Samsung Intercept and hacking that (UbuntDroid, Cyanogen was not flawless) but it is still a slow as heck pile of crap and we both hate it equally.
I used to have an HTC Aria so I know HTC can put out a decent 600MHz phone, I'm wondering if the 8227 is the same ARM version as my HTC EVO 3D (MSM8660). I know it is geared towards low end, but will it run Firefox (the Aria and Intercept do not), and overclocking aside, is it a good processor/phone.
I love me some HTC so I'm hoping for favorable answers above. I don't care about cell phone carriers, as long as it's not AT&T (which unfortunately rules out GSM entirely in my area). I am located in Central Vermont for anyone generous enough to suggest carriers.
And honestly, as long as I can activate it at some point, that's fine. She HATES it when I spend money on her (perfect? yea she is lol) so this is going to be a "toy" for me for a while until I "get bored with it". Yeah it's obvious and yeah she still gets mad but I have that technicality to fall back on
In an unrelated but while-I'm-here question, I have an Ex with whom I have a joint sprint account and she just trashed her EVO 3D screen and is in need of a new phone, something reliable (it was always crashing on her), just wondering if an EVO 4G with Cyanogen is as bulletproof (software wise) as you can get with Android on Sprint as I am going to end up surprising her with a new phone eventually.
I think u have to use virgin mobile only phones on there network, (I could be wrong) if you want a faster procesor there are oc kernels that will oc to 806 mhz compared to stock 600mhz , I'm not sure what you mean about low end arm processor, the wildfire s are good phones

While the update is still about 3 to 4 weeks away, I want to make sure certain issues that have previously risen, don't happen on the Glide.
Firstly, If you are unlocked & have CWM installed, do not try to flash the update without first preparing yourself & your device. Updates on devices that have incorrectly made CWM versions that cannot be not overwritten have & will cause issues from simple black screen all the way to emergency dload mode.
to use official updates you need to relock your device & be using a correctly keyed AT&T rom.
My advice to you is to wait for a final OTA to be released & rooted & then sideload the update. ICS will however require a new boot section & possibly radio.
Once I have time, I will write a tutorial based on both my Vivid & SGS2 update experiences.
Until then be happy that you now own the only ICS slider so far.
this is so incredible nice
just ordered this phone a week ago from germany.
It works perfekt, but i was a bit disapointed, that there will be no ICS update...

Does this mean,, the Unlocked (Network Unlock)) has to be restored back the NETWORK LOCKED mode.??
Will the initial unlock key work later also ??
will this issue be more dramatic for the Canadian, Rogers Glide (I927R)? When it comes to Rogers, they really don't announce if an Android device will get (or not) an update...

Is the Captivate Glide available for sale in Germany?
Hi
I can't update OTA the updte from ATT. After the package gets downloaded to my phone my phones reboots and then it cancels the update.
Do you know if it is failing because my phone is rooted?

No, i bought it via wireless.amazon.com and shipped it to germany with borderlinx. All you need is a unlock code and everything works finde
I will release a rooted Version once it is released, so don't worry Canada & Germany! I love my Vivid, but the Glide has really surprised me with some of its nice media functions & overall responsiveness. It is also one of the few devices that will operate on the 5Ghz wireless-n band.
So far, only AT&T has announced plans for ICS on the Glide. Samsung told me the same.
As for lock & unlock, you always need to relock devices for OTA updates, but the one you are getting now is not ICS, just 2.3.6. I suggest skipping that one & waiting for the ICS build which will be here in roughly over 3-weeks. LTE devices are getting first run from AT&T.

Slight nitpick. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro has also been confirmed to be upgraded to ICS. Of course, its specs are somewhat worse than the Captivate Glide...
Just a question all this talk about ICS. Is ICS really that much better then Gingerbread. I mean I have seen the slick new interface but will it be better at handling opened apps and will battery life be better. I am just wondering if I should upgrade or since Gingerbread is working fine (If it ain't broke).

To me, being able to have a real in app spellchecker makes it more than worth updating. I hate typing emails on gingerbread because I am such a terrible speller. And I don't have time for all the copying and pasting from one app to another. Anyways hopes this helps.

In ICS Android itself makes better use of the hardware inside the phone. One of the big things in ICS is that Android itself starts using the GPU for graphics, where it used to pass that to the CPU. This means a far more optimised system overall, which should translate to better battery life.
Because the CPU has to do less to little of something it wasn't specifically built for. This should free the CPU up as the graphics load is now handled by the GPU. But it's unlikely that this freed up CPU-time will mean the CPU gets to sit there, idly. It will probably be used for something else. So that could mean that ICS uses the CPU equally to Gingerbread, and uses the GPU more than Gingerbread. This would mean a shorter battery life.
Going on the information I've got I'd say ICS will be a better system overall. But it still remains to be seen, time will really tell.

So we don't really know if battery life will be better or worse. I like that you mention that the GPU will be more efficiently used over gingerbread, but as you said only time will tell. Guess as always I will wait and see what others think of it once they install it and then see if I will upgrade. Thank you for your input.
Does anyone know if in the updates there will be vertical-landscape transitions? The lack of them on here makes me cringe! Is it Samsung enabled/can we reenable them?

EVO3D ICS Port?

Well I was wondering since the EVO3D's official ics port has finally landed would this be something easier to port and have fully functional compared to all the other CM9/CM10 ICS/JB roms? (Its only 300mb in size) When i say fully functional I mean everything including cameras and wimax.
Also Did anyone notice this article on the main page?http://www.xda-developers.com/android/htc-8mp-cameras-by-omnivision-use-universal-drivers/
Supposedly taking the ics camera drivers from the Sensation XL (or HD I guess) being it uses the same hardware as the EVO4G could get us a fully functional ics camera/camcorder?
It might be alot harder than what im making it seem, but was wondering if those who are in the "know" could enlighten me.

I doubt it. One prob is the e3d is 5 mp while the EVO is 8. Idk bout other phones but maybe one with 8 will be possible. But I don't think ffc is the same camera, or is it? Idk
Captain_Throwback said:
Frameworks and bins aren't where the problems are - it's the kernel (mostly) and the drivers (libs, EGLs). The EVO 3D (Shooter) and EVO Design (Kingdom) don't help us there because their hardware is vastly different then ours (for the most part). Of course there are similarities, but not enough to help us get this ROM fully functioning.

Well if the EVO Shift got an ICS update, that might actually be helpful. Not as far as FFC goes (since it doesn't have one), but as far as getting a working ICS Sense ROM. But like our ancient, EOL device, the Shift is suffering a similar fate (no official update).
But yeah, as Mazda said, EVO 3D ICS is no help. We've had the leaked ROM like, forever .

Has anyone tried the camera drivers from the sensation or the sensation XL?
The FCC might be the same as well being they used a 1.3mp camera and it has an official ics sense update.
