Hi, I am looking at buying an HTC Wildfire S to activate on Virgin Mobile. I want the Qualcom MSM8227 (not the 7227 that most Wildfire S phones have). The specific phone is released on US Cellular.
Code:
htc dot com/us/products/wildfires-uscellular/
I can get it unlocked on Amazon for $200-$250. I BELIEVE it is the A510e but I have seen differing specs, so any Wildfire with the 8227
Code:
amazon dot com/HTC-A510e-Unlocked-Android-Bluetooth/dp/B0055DXZZY/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
My two questions:
Is the 8227 as great as it is made out to be? What version ARM is it?
Will I be able to activate it on VM (again, I'm buying unlocked, I'm more asking people's experience with non-carrier-branded devices on Virgin)? (if not, what prepaid service can I in the USA, I'm not tied to Virgin Mobile, and their utter lack of Google Voice integration steams my peas).
Bonus: Given the hardware difference, what are my chances of easily attaining S-OFF and Root and flashing a custom (Ideally Cyanogen) ROM on it. I'd kill for CM9 but I have my EVO 3D and ThinkPad Tablet for that (eventually), CM7 would be nice, even CM6 would be very acceptable.
I ended up buying a Samsung Intercept and hacking that (UbuntDroid, Cyanogen was not flawless) but it is still a slow as heck pile of crap and we both hate it equally.
I used to have an HTC Aria so I know HTC can put out a decent 600MHz phone, I'm wondering if the 8227 is the same ARM version as my HTC EVO 3D (MSM8660). I know it is geared towards low end, but will it run Firefox (the Aria and Intercept do not), and overclocking aside, is it a good processor/phone.
I love me some HTC so I'm hoping for favorable answers above. I don't care about cell phone carriers, as long as it's not AT&T (which unfortunately rules out GSM entirely in my area). I am located in Central Vermont for anyone generous enough to suggest carriers.
And honestly, as long as I can activate it at some point, that's fine. She HATES it when I spend money on her (perfect? yea she is lol) so this is going to be a "toy" for me for a while until I "get bored with it". Yeah it's obvious and yeah she still gets mad but I have that technicality to fall back on
In an unrelated but while-I'm-here question, I have an Ex with whom I have a joint sprint account and she just trashed her EVO 3D screen and is in need of a new phone, something reliable (it was always crashing on her), just wondering if an EVO 4G with Cyanogen is as bulletproof (software wise) as you can get with Android on Sprint as I am going to end up surprising her with a new phone eventually.
I think u have to use virgin mobile only phones on there network, (I could be wrong) if you want a faster procesor there are oc kernels that will oc to 806 mhz compared to stock 600mhz , I'm not sure what you mean about low end arm processor, the wildfire s are good phones

i dont think slowness is caused by you service provider...
No dev has a RAPH500 to play with (to my knowledge) and the kernel for the 500 is in the doldrums as a result. Sorry, until someone more knowledgeable about coding that has a 500 steps up, or one of the devs gets their hands on a 500, progress will be slow.
You also realize that VZW crippled their version of the TouchPro right? It's working with something like half the RAM available to the 110's or 800's.
How do I get there?
I've been playing with android on my htc titan and just bought a Raph500 off ebay. How can I help get the raph500 off the ground? According to wikipedia the raph500 has 192MB ram, which should be usable. The HTC titan only has 64, and android almost works. I'd like to learn more. Is that what chef central is all about?

the at&t version (htc fuze) has 288 mbs and i know in WM around 90 mbs are always free. also the htc titan is a much more understood phone on how everything works and is not as complex/ undocumented as the touch pro.
if your asking about chef central its not for you but seriously the people that makes android for wm phone or roms are called "chefs" and their roms are what they "cook" (its like a inside joke) but it is were all the new chefs go to get tools or help from experienced developers (or called devs)
question, if your on verizon, why are you using a touch pro and trying to run an android rom on it, if you want android, you should be using the droid eris, droid, or droid incredible. those are much better options for android on verizon than using a rom to try to run it on a WM phone.

If we all used this logic, then this project probably wouldn't exist at all. People are tied to contracts, don't want to buy a new phone, like their TP, for whatever reason... They'd rather run it as a ported project. I will probably get an Android-based device eventually - but until I do it's pretty cool to be able to run Android on my WinMo phone. I'm sure he just feels the same way...
OK, So I'm shopping for a new phone,
I've been enjoying getting my feet wet with a comparatively low end model & am becoming somewhat addicted to constantly tinkering, have managed to compile my own kernel and now feel the need for an upgrade.
This (Desire Z) is currently at the top of my list as it seems to be well supported by the dev community & I really want a qwerty keypad!
So, as users of this phone & knowing what you know now...
Would you buy this phone again?
Well, I love my Z and i think it works fast and the keyboard is amazing. But the problem these days is: Dual core phones are coming out a lot right now, and even the fast processor of the G2 can't compare to that. So, as much as i love my Desire Z, I would wait a while for a Dual Core HTC (like the Pyramid).
But ofcourse: If you REALLY want a phone right now, a Desire Z with an Otterbox Commuter case is my recommendation! (since I personally love the Otterbox case, hehe.)

Cool, thanks for the input...
I hear what you're saying, my thinking right now is that in order to learn more about kernel & ROM development, is that I should be getting something that has a good amount of hacking & dev work behind it already.
The newer phones are less charted waters & I'm not experienced enough to be a pioneer
Will be sure to look at the otterbox case

Yep, that's also true. And indeed, there is alof of development going on for the Desire Z, it's great. And so many awesome roms to choose from as well.
As Hubba88 said, at this point, I'd wait for a dual core like the HTC Pyramid/Sensation. But, I love my G2 and am very happy with the purchase. Great keyboard, capacitive buttons are in the right place, very responsive trackpad. All in all typically great HTC build quality. CyanogenMod support is a huge plus as well for this phone.
If I knew that the z hinge was going to be so ****ty no,I would not buy it again. I'd go for a unibody design instead.

If the keyboard is important to you, as well as the tinkering aspect, then I reckon this is a good phone.
Not sure there has been much talk of dual core's with keyboards? So a real Desire Z upgrade may be some way beyond the next few HTC phones. Even then when they come out it takes time to build the developer base behind it and get rooting sorted etc. I moved a month and a bit ago and reckon there will be nothing to make me desperately want an upgrade for at least a year.
Look how well the desire has done and still does. The DZ has a better processor and more storage on board etc. The overclockability of the chip seems to be something that will extend its lifespan in terms of performance against the newer phones.
Always worth remembering that there is often quite a difference between phones being rumoured, then announced, and then actually on sale and being hacked. Therefore if a desire Z replacement is not yet in the rumours, it will likely be quite a while before its out there in the real world.
So yeah, I think its a good phone, although not perfect.
As I have insurance with my contract I will be OK with any problems with the Hinge - but none so far.
I voted yes but if I were in the market for a phone now I'd wait till the G2x was available and compare side by side. I suspect I'd get that one because it's newer, faster and has a more future proof AT&T compatible radio.
Thanks all for your input so far,
I've been following the Official thread on which phone should I get for some weeks which does talk about the latest & greatest dual core's an awful lot, but, as I said above the support & dev work that has gone into the DZ already is probably the biggest factor for me, it should give me a good base to work/learn from.

I saw in Hubba88's sig that 1.3Ghz is achievable, that seems more than fast enough given the apps that are currently available. I'm thinking it will take a while for any apps to be taking advantage of dual cores...
Re Hinge, well I can cope with that if it becomes an issue, the teardown & repair looks pretty straight forward.

Even 1.9 ghz is achievable . And I haven't had any problems with my hinge, it's pretty sturdy.
If you need a phone now, get the DZ.
If you can wait, wait until the quad core phones come out in 2012.
I love my G2 but I would not buy this phone again. With Swiftkey I find that I never use the hardware keyboard which was the main reason I bought my G2. If I could go back in time I would get a Nexus S or maybe a galaxy s.
Obvious answer is obvious:
Why get the same phone again when it has been 6 months since it first came out, therefore rendering the phone "obsolete", so to speak. If I had half a grand cash in my pocket right now I would wait for the HTC Pyramid (Their Dual Core).
Hi All
I want to generate a poll about you, desire users.
About using my desire after a year I'm planing to change it.
Some of the reasons,
Low internal storage
Mismultitocuh screen
Lower process power than new phones.
You! Desire User! Which one you ll buy?
You can write your own models...
My choice is SGS2

Never had problems with my desire I would keep it if I could but Im just a tech freak and i like the new stuff so far my fav android phone when I will be able to upgrade is sgs2 though I am not sure about the size, ill check it out better when it will be more accessible
Swyped from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
HTC Sensation/SGS2 - depends on the hands-on test, when I'm tested them both.
I'm little angry with touchscreen of my desire and htc.
And as I search for some touchscreen documents and i saw that Samsung using best Touchscreen hardware. (ATMEL)
And also SAMOLED+ pulling me.
Sensation has lower internal memory that makes me angry.

And also worst camera and screen and probably a battery life

After rooting my desire I have had little issues with storage but am noticing processor speed starting to not handle some apps and games, I do like more of a stock Android look so I might go with an Atrix with Launcher Pro UI...but before my new phone it will be a Motorola Xoom!!!!

My answer is none of those lol..i'm just not impressed enough by the new dual-core processors, i guess i'll wait for some 2ghz(+) one before i drop my Desire
Something that will have an android 2.4 already. Im going to wait till google i/o next month. We might see some monster phones before the year ends that runs on 2.4.
I will not buy a SGS2 cause i might wait another year just for me to get an upgrade knowing how much crap they put on touchwiz. It will take them forever just to port 2.4 on on sgs2. The same for sensation.
No matter what, I am waiting for 2012 for a new phone for a couple of reasons.
1) I want a brilliant dual core (1.5GHz)
2) My contract doesn't run out till Dec this year anyway.
The Desire is still one of the most powerful phones on the market and getting something like a Nexus S will be defeating the purposes of upgrading. So dual core for me with a pretty good graphics chip. Not bothered about OS version. 2.3 is good enough for me.
I think it's good time to sell my desire, it makes 300$ in Turkey now adays and this is a good number for here. If i wait for some more time , i cant sell it for this number.
I think sensation and sgs2 will take 2.4 easily

Same here. Don't see the point upgrading to another single core.
None of the Poll devices. My next phone will have HW keyboard. But not sure will I get a new device for years. Desire rocks. Been rocking a year next month.
I will possibly get the HTC Sensation, provided it's rootable and "s-offable" not too long after release.
I got the Incredible S but only kept it a couple of weeks because it's too heavily protected (signed bootloader says hello). It was a nice phone though but my Desire can do much more so I went back to it.
Same here. My contract end in 2012 and there is currently no worthy replacement for my Desire with CM7.
"other"
the HTC Evo 3D will not be released in the UK (according to HTC) so I will be going for the LG Optimus 3D
I will try the this one: Lumigon T1 . It is the companies first cellphone, so ill try
HTC for me ))
And Sensation all the way )) I'll wait a bit when the prices drop

Do you have a source for this?
Because I was really looking forward to a GSM version of this. HTC France twitter said something about getting it and france uses GSM.
I do like the look of the Optimus 3D but LG is a bit meh...
and I love HTC sense!
I'm most probably going to buy the HTC Sensation. The only thing I can think of that would make me change my mind would be the battery life. If the phone can't handle over a day of medium to heavy usage, I'm not going to buy it. I complained endlessly when I get my Desire because of it's terrible battery life. Then I found out that good Android phones don't really get much better battery life.
Hmmm...I don't plan to get a new phone this year...but....
I vote for Sensation.
This is kinda a two'fer post. One part about the HTC desire's upgradability/speed and second part about Android/HTC desire abroad.
Upgradabiloity:
I currently have a HTC Kaiser and while it was pretty sweet at the time (hardware still is, albiet always kinda slow) i have kinda hit a wall in terms of OS upgrading for the obvious reason that winmo stopped at v6.5 but also speed, it's somthing between glacial and turtles-stampeding-through-peanutbutter so even if there was a v6.6 it would be painful. So, how is the Desire Z in terms of speed now and what does its future look like for future releases of android? Should i perhaps wait for something like the doubleshot? (or some other dual-core android/qwerty phone) or will the Desire Z last me say 3 years? (educated guesses welcome)
Abroad (admittedly more general android than Desire specific):
I live and work outside of the US about 10 months a year (most of my time abroad) so I need a phone that is good for travel. I have found posts about using different carriers etc abroad but not so much about using various android (google) services outside the US, things such as google voice and maps. Having a unified number or even a US number for forwarding would be very useful and google maps is great but seems to not be as useful outside of the US and I am sure there are some other services I am missing. So how useful is Android abroad compared to using in the US (Also considering the only other phone i am considering is the iPhone v4 (always though iPhone was a bit limited hardware wise though) so it may be the case that these services aren't useful outside the US but iphone services would be equally as usful(less) outside the US.
Thanks in advance!
-Gaiko
I used to have a Kaiser long time ago. It was a great device. While the vision is definitely an upgrade in terms of speed, display and even usability , if you haven't got it yet you should wait a couple of months (probably) for a dual core slider.
However, I got my desire z 2 months ago and I'm very happy with it. The move from Winmo- HTC Raphael - to Android wasn't too painful. I didn't have the guts to root it yet as it seems it's a little more complicated than flashing a custom winmo Rom, and I am still reading the forums to make sure I don't mess up when I start fiddling with ADB and the other stuf. Even unrooted and with stock sense rom the Desire Z is very capable as a mobile office.

been without a phone for a few months and I'm finally thinking about getting one..
Either a WFS or Optimus Elite on Virgin mobile.
I'm just curious to see whether it's actually worth spending $179+$35 on for an out dated arm6 phone. I mean it's kinda on par with my HTC Hero(which I actually used a wildfire based rom on)
I just don't want to get the phone and then be completely unhappy with it..
I did read/watch reviews on it back in November/December after it came out.
as for rooting and what not... i pretty much know how to do all that
(Two gold MT3g gold cards and unrevoked HeroC) which will greatly improve the storage capacity of the phone.
As always, thanks in advance
u should get galaxy ace/plus/2
they are better than WFS
Both have their pros and cons........the LG elite has a bigger battery,NFC(plus for you??) but no ambient light sensor for auto-brightness(WTF)....it also has an ARMV7 processor, which supports flash
The wildfire s has good looks,A useful Sense UI but a less powerful processor
Also the WFS on virgin mobile is CDMA.......and the CDMA variant of the wildfire s doesn't have much on the development front, the CM9 and CM7 don't work on the CDMA wildfire s
So it's a stalemate in the Dev front........which leaves the decision to you.......if you want NFC and can live without auto-brightness......take the LG elite, Else look at the wildfire s
Well I could always go with T-mobile. but I'd be dropped to 100 minutes talk time.
HTC sense is a BIG plus for me.
NFC, i actually had to google that one, so I don't need it.
For the LG optimus elite, I haven't looked into it yet but I saw it can be rooted, does it have a decent dev. support?
don't know 'bout that
do yourself a huge favour and get anything else but this phone....had the phone around 6 months, and it's been nothing but hassle...just finding a rom that's stable, works, and gives you enough room for even the basic apps is a pain, and in fact something I have still yet to accomplish. don't say I didn't warn you :s
armv6 is a huge setback....DONT buy an armv6 fone or u will cry out loud!!
