I saw a thread similar to this stickied in the developer section over on the Asus Transformer Prime forums so I figured i'd get one started over here. Hope it helps someone out! I will keep this updated as best as I can.

Hello,
A family member just got the Nexus I'm looking to root it and install a ROM The stock ROM sucks...
So..To root should I use THE GALAXY NEXUS TOOLKIT or use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362957? Does it matter?
As for a ROM it seems most of you geeks like AOSP because the dev is responsive and his ROM rocks. Will this ROM improve battery life over others? Or should I wait for CM9 to be official on the Nexus?
Thanks
Use the toolkit, and use Android Open Kang Project (AOKP), Bigxie or GummyNex for a ROM. All are well-supported and interesting.
Lol @ geeks

Hi
Should I install
this ROM
{PLAY}[DEVELOPMENT] - CM9.0 - FXP103b FreeXperia Project
or
this ROM
[rom][AOSP] ICX Beta 2-test 2 [ICS] [4.0.3]
And why ?
Are both prepared for daily usage?
Icx has no camera and data.
It is still in beta.

I doubt you read those threads, at all.
I'd advice you to stay with stock.
You should definitly read those posts carefully. When asking these questions, and if u have already read the posts carefully, Please include your phone model,FW version, kernal, and build. It helps others help you. For one, You will have to have an unlocked BL, WHICH is dangerous if you don't know what SAFE mods you can perform. So, be sure to make backups of everything before flashing anything. Consider downloading a Stock Rom for your device in case you need to start completely over.
Here is a link to a post with a list of stock FTF(flash tool firmware) and roms and many other stuff. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294129
Good Luck and Remember, You are responsible for what you do with your device.

The stock rom is pretty good as others have suggested. Root it and get rid of all the crapware and its just great.

Thanks for the reply now i have some questions, i found the thread with the CM 9
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932573
my questions are how to do some of the instructions that i have to do before installing the CM 9
FULL WIPE - this is the factory restore in the revolutionary recovery menu ?
FLASH ROM -...... how i do this ?
FLASH ICS-GAPPS - how do i do this
FLASH AEROEVANS V14 KERNEL - how do i do this
WIPE CACHE/DALVIK - this option i found it in the revolutionary menu
I am a new at this - first time is harder, if u can give me step by step instruction will be awesome.
Thanks a lot
Here's a hint: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/HTC_Incredible_2:_Full_Update_Guide
You'll install the ICS Google apps and Aeroevan's kernel the same way you install the ROM. Aeroevan's V15 kernel is here: http://goo.im/devs/aeroevan/kernel/vivow/aeroevan_ICSv15-bfs.zip and you can use it instead of V14.
BTW, what you're calling the revolutionary menu is actually known as ClockworkMod Recovery.
Hi,
I've consulted many threads but I'm not able to find just the original stock rom for my GT-I9250 (GSM) maguro. Might you help me?
Thanks

Here you go https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=pl#takjujwr66y
Here is flashabl zip http://downloadandroidfiles.org/download-maguro_jwr66v_deodexed-zip/
If you want to pure AOSP, here is optimized version (built with Linaro) http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/development/rom-guide-t2394669 It's worth to install more than stock ROM. Choose "Galaxy Nexus 4.3 compiled with toolchain linaro 4.7.4 with cflags -O3"
You have to only install also Google Apps and supersu if you want to have root.
If you will install AOSP that i linked you + light Banks GAPPS ( http://goo.im/devs/BaNkS/GApps/4.3/11-2_GApps_Core_4.3_signed.zip ), you will get lightweght and smooth system.
Wrong thread BTW
I suggest you to install Cataclysm ROM and you can use my settings (in my signature)
You can always use a Toolkit (eg. Nexus Root Toolkit). In the flash stock option it'll download and flash it for you.
I just rooted my D851 on 5.0.1 and now I want to flash a ROM. Can I get help or a link on flashing a custom recovery and ROM. And what ROM is in your opinion the best?

Follow the stock recovery installation directions.
Once you've got TWRP installed, seek out Illusion. Best custom ROM I've had the pleasure of using...

Perfect, thank you! I have everything installed already. Is there anything I should download or is the ROM itself enough?

If you want google apps....you'll need a set of gapps....other than that, I believe the last build (Illusion is no longer being supported, Dev moved on to AOSIP for the Nexus line) comes with a launcher, but just in case I would flash one you like (you'll have the opportunity to try the ROMs launcher if I am correct...sorry...it's been a while) - NOTE: certain gapps packages come with GNL, so if you just flash that particular gapps pack, you should be G2G
Let me know if you have any other questions. Illusion is by far the fastest, most fluid, stable ROM available for the d851.
