Thanks for the reply now i have some questions, i found the thread with the CM 9
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1932573
my questions are how to do some of the instructions that i have to do before installing the CM 9
FULL WIPE - this is the factory restore in the revolutionary recovery menu ?
FLASH ROM -...... how i do this ?
FLASH ICS-GAPPS - how do i do this
FLASH AEROEVANS V14 KERNEL - how do i do this
WIPE CACHE/DALVIK - this option i found it in the revolutionary menu
I am a new at this - first time is harder, if u can give me step by step instruction will be awesome.
Thanks a lot
Here's a hint: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/HTC_Incredible_2:_Full_Update_Guide
You'll install the ICS Google apps and Aeroevan's kernel the same way you install the ROM. Aeroevan's V15 kernel is here: http://goo.im/devs/aeroevan/kernel/vivow/aeroevan_ICSv15-bfs.zip and you can use it instead of V14.
BTW, what you're calling the revolutionary menu is actually known as ClockworkMod Recovery.

Hello,
I want to upgrade my DEFY from Eclair to Gingerbread; I've read lotsa posts on what to use and where to put this and that but unfortunately I'm not into this and some slang terms (not tech terms, I just mean pure slang) are hell for me.
Is there any guide I can easily follow?
Moreover, on the XDA DEFY Wiki there's a great mole of information but actually I'm a bit lost: what's the best ROM with no BLUR easy like a piece of pie?
Thanks!
There isn't an official ROM of Gingerbread.
Nevertheless you can install it by flashing a leaked sbf or by installing a rom such as cyanogenmod or miui.
If you want to install leaked gingerbread, you'd better making a nandroid backup.
Then, you should install a nandroid backup of that rom and at the end flash a fixed sbf, in order to keep downgrade ability.
If you want to install cyanogenmod or miui, you have to upgrade to a froyo sbf ( flash a full sbf or a nandroid + fixed sbf ).
Then, install clockwork recovery mod and flash the rom.
Search better on the forum, there are lots of clear and simple guides!
You can install cm7, its 2.3.4. There's a FAQ on cm7 go with that

Grazie Carlo =)
I was thinking to skip out Froyo as it's not my fave so think I'll stick with leaked Gingerbread, will search out in the forum for a step by step guide (even for noobs like me =)
Again, thanks!

Mh, reading out that Quarx C7 has some bugs here and there, but you say it's better?
I'm exactly facing your same situation: I opened a thread in defy general section to see if it's safe to install CM7.
I use this phone for work, therefore I need something stable and as much as possible bug free.
Until now the only problem I could read is camera related (last CM7 RC1) and that's it.

Nothing is 100% safe in life, but I can assure you that CM7 for Defy is very nice and with very few bugs left in it.
Fresh news: last RC1 has been changed to PRE-RC1 just a few hours ago by Epsylon3. There is a new replacement for RC1 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654&page=771 (see post #7708 for download)
Or from the main page (not sure if it's the final RC1 yet - it might take a few hours before they update the mirror to the latest RC1 on the OP): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
And please read the FAQ here first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798
The installation process is really easy and if you follow the FAQ instructions, you will have no problem with CM7. You will need to flash the nordic sbf (Froyo) in the process --> so there are steps specific to you to take for keeping your Eclair (or Froyo) "downgradabiltiy"...
You will need to use custom recovery to make a (nand) backup of your current phone software state (which is always good to have anyway).
That new RC1 is REALLY GOOD (hands downs the best version) and I have ZERO bug with it so far.
I'd stay away from the other Gingerbread 'official' leaked ROM; MANY problems reported on it I believe (heck; I've read that even rooting it is hard...).
Later on, if you really don't like CM7 [which I greatly doubt ], then you can always go back to your current state - BUT again, read the FAQ carefully.
Edit:
CM7 is just awesome I've been using it almost since its beginning (maybe 20 different revisions); i will never go back to Froyo - it's that good!
If you find this post useful, you can thank me by pressing this "Thanks" button here under-->:
Yes, CM7 RC1 it almost bug free ( imho totally ).
There are only 2 things i hate about leaked gingerbread:
Ultra brightness for the touch keys.
If mobile data is disabled from the settings, you'll see an arrows icon fixed in status bar ( no way to hide it without enabling data ).
These are the reasons for which i'm still using, absolutely satisfied, CM7; it works like a charm !
Hello,
i am using Motorola Milestone and of course i have rooted this "ancient phone"
Now my brother got a Defy and i am trying to help him get the best out of it.
I've been reading the Defy forum, and i realised since my brother has a 2.51 that we should root it using this guidance:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889133&highlight=root
Then for the best ROM, is this CM7 the best out of there now? Is it also stable?
This is the thread i am talking about:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654
Also is MIUI working well on Defy? This is the best version?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079150
Because i read that there's a choppy video, led not working etc, and i am afraid that i might mess his mobile and then it would be my fault!
I think you understand my concerns, as it is not my phone
Thanks in advance!
CM7 is the best according to me..it is stable..gr8 performance..works very well..
led works fine..no problem at all..in the recent nightlies videos are pretty good..they r not that choppy..
u can install CM7 and try it yourself..if u find any problem, search around or try some other ROM if u r not happy
All the best
ok thanks, so i assume that the links are correct and will proceed with those!!
I think CM7 is the best rom out there, the speed is really awesome.
and about the threads, you should also check the last pages, a updates for the rom comes daily, and every updates make everything better
currently, the newest CM7 is the 110727-2117 Nightly Jordan

ok thanks, i thought the thread owners usually update their first pages, in order to have all users updated.
Or is just nightly ROMS that are not posted on first page?
nightlies comes out everyday..they r not the official release..so they r not put up on the first page..people test the nightlies and report if there are any bugs..but nightlies r also stable enough like official releases..
guys is there anywhere a guide to install open recovery on Defy?
As i couldnt find anywhere in the Defy forum an update.zip file...
thank you in advance
Fekish, if you're trying to install the CM7 or MIUI roms, while in the recovery, you do not use the apply update.zip.
here's the steps:
follow the steps CM7/MIUI roms
when in recovery, choose "stable recovery"
next, choose "install zip from sdcard"
choose the CM7/MIUI rom (which is in zip, obviously)
install.
and its finished
I think both CM7 and MIUI are nice rom.
CM7 is a stable rom with great performance. Even more stable than stock rom!!!
MIUI is a rom with beautiful UI.
You can choose according to you need. For me, I am using CM7.

ok thanks. In order to have this "stable recovery" as an option, should i do something else? Because i have rooted my phone, however when i reboot using power button and volume down, there is no change in that menu.
Also is there a way to backup everything of CM7 for example and install MIUI, and then vice versa? In order to jump from one ROM to another in 1'?
I am used from Motorola Milestone were we are using the Open Recovery for any new roms or backups . Now i am a bit confused for my brother's defy...
I have been off the scene for awhile so much changes so quick. I have rooted my phone with unrevoked last year and am on jiminy v cricket rom. My phone has been working good. I found out about hdmwin mirror and it did not work so that brought me here. I am currently still on android 2.2 and rooted and want to try some new roms like cyna 7 and nitelies. here are my questions
1. do i need to re root phone to newer version or is unrevoked still alright
2. what roms work for 2.2 and get hdmi mirror for hdmwin
3. same thing as question 2 for kernals.
4. any addtional info
I read quite a few threads and got confused..
thanks for you help.
Shouldn't need to re-root. Why are you holding off on running a 2.3 ROM?
I am not sure if the new roms matched up with android 2.2. might be missing some info on this I read but a little confused on the 2.2 to 2.3 and so forth on which roms work for each one.
You don't need to upgrade to official 2.3. I never did. The 2.3 ROMS are not gonan give you the great battery life that Froyo ROMS had, but they have a TON more to them now. No SBC Kernels for Sense, either.
You in a good state right now. Go to the link in my URL. It will explain everything about cm7 and you need to flash amon RA too which is in there

Kernels: Chopsuey 9.2.7 and Freedom .9 are the major ones, if you are sticking with Sense.
Kernels are the major part. I would suggest MikG, or if you are feeling adventurous, either MikRunny or Hybrid (in Jaredthegreat's thread FEARMEde). I suggest mounting data in recovery before flashing any kernel. Under "Mounts" option in recovery.
Maybe you need to update to AmonRa 2.3, still the best
AOSP-wise, either MIUI or Deck's, paired with Tiamat 4.1 kernel SBC.

Hey Guys
So basically here is the deal..
My brother has a very old HTC Desire GSM and now out of warranty.. runs like an elephant.. never rooted.. I am going to be meeting him in few weeks and want to root his phone and put a custom ROM so that his experience increases..
Now he is not a techie, so will take whatever I give him.. I have rooted other phones before.. so not my first time.. but first for this model..
Now my questions are
1) Anything I need to check on Desire for root ability ? I can instruct him over net to check it
2) I guess first step will be to root it.. best to use unrevoked?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044
3) Then put a custom recovery.. this one best? Clockworkmod recovery?
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-bravo.img
OR touch recovery???
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-bravo.img
Or any other one??
4) Now the ROM -- I normally use Cyanogenmod in phones.. Is that still the best for this .. My main concern is that all hardware should be working and stable.. So which is most recommended?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328
CM: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get.../archive/update-cm-7.2.0-RC3-bravo-signed.zip
Leedroid: http://leedroid.ftp.rshost.eu/Bravo-ROMs/LeeDrOiD_HD_V3.3.3_GB-Port-R5-A2SD.zip OR data edition???? differene??
Any other?? :
Not listing ICS roms as I guess many hardware issues can still be there..
What I am looking for is that he can use app2sd so that he can store apps on SD and save internal memory and is fast , nice, stable and good free memory for the gimmicks
5) Put googleapps package..
Also
1) Any custom kernel / radio needed??
2) What are the steps require to combine all the above??
3) Anything else I am missing for the device
Any help will be great!!!
Cheers
Erm uv kinda got it. CM or oxygen would be your best bet for a rom. Personaly imo i think 4eXT Recovery is the best.
Sent from my HTC Desire
If you want the Sense flavor go with Supernova rom its the original gingerbread update plus the space. Aosp, it would be oxygen or cm7. Oxygen has a built in Apps2sd in it you only need to make a partition on the sd card. I suggest S2E app on the market for apps2sd on CM7.
If running on CM7, you can check ManU kernel. Oxygen use their own kernel so you can use others without breaking functionality.
Get the latest Oxygen rom at http://oxygen.im
If you are going for CM7 or Oxygen I would also recommend to S-off using Alpharev or Revolutionary (what to use will depend on the hboot version) so that you can flash an hboot with custom partition to give you more space. Check the troubleshooting guide on my sig to get an overview. Good luck.

I think this kind of rules CM out.
Best bet to stick with Sense 1.9 roms made for Desire. That way you won't break his routine and he'll reap the benefits of having increased space, battfix if you do it for him, LS tweak etc.
So this one is recommended? Supernova Xtreme?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
Or Oxygen 2.3.2 ??
http://download.oxygen.im/roms/update-oxygen-2.3.2-Bravo-signed.zip
Going with higher sense ROM's any better or recommended?? or no point??
and 4EXT Recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408936
Basically looking for a ROM which can make him feel his phone like brand new, make it fast and enough internal memory, save stuff on App2SD (or Data2SD perhaps??)
So in essence. do the following??
1) Root via unrevoked (will check his HBOOT version and post here soon for recommendation) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044
2) install 4EXT recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408936
3) Install ROM which is either CM7.1 / Supernova Xtreme / Oxygen 2.3.2 ? (please recommend best)
If I choose the above way. do I need to do anything additional like (prefer none if no benefit)
a) kernel update???
b) install seperate app like app2sd or data2sd and configure (would prefer not, would like it inbuilt in the ROM for ease)
c) radio update???
Help me make final decision
Cheers..
Radio update might be necessary. Look at cronmod ROM thread, in desire development. It has direct link to newest radio in the first post. When you're there you can check out the ROM. I like it.
For a tech noob I'd also recommend supernova. Stock kernel is sufficient. I don't remember if you need partitioning, but it says on supernova homepage under instructions. Be sure to follow them.

Moving to Q&A
Hi @ all.
I want to start a support thread for all those unlucky ones who flashed a BL7-sbf on their green-lensed defy.
NOT the Defy+ or red lens, because the green one is the one for real trouble.
I am aware that you can always install a CM10 by quarx, but I wanted to have a more smooth and stable solution.
You should verify, that you are on a BL7. If you don't know what that means, you should not be here, Do not use these rooting instruction unless you know, you are on BL7. If you're questionning here, what are advantages, or disadvantages, or how you can find out what BL you have, please leave NOW.
This thread is for those who know what's cookin'.
I cannot stress this enough - be sure. search the forums. Don't flood this with useless questions.
I'll try to keep the first posts updated regularly, so that there should be no reason to read the whole thread everytime.
Now let's get started:
1. As far as I know, Froyo is no longer an option.
So, your options start with GB ROMs plus the camera fix. Please comment if they work and how.
I am sure somebody already built such roms.
2. You can also use a 2ndboot-based CM7 build like ms2ginger.
I don't know how many of those exist.
3. What I need you for:
Please add your own rom, when you know it's working on BL7.
Please add the rom you're using, when you're on BL7 with working SOC cam.
Questions:
It would be really helpful to know if ANY GB ROM will work with the camera fix.
It would also be helpful to know, if we should use custom MB525 or MB526 builds as base rom.
Working Roms:
1. MS2Ginger
2. tbc.
3. tbc.
First try (all flashed via custom recovery):
1. I managed to get a working CM 7.2, from early may 2013 with GB Kernel. (cm72-20120506-NIGHTLY-Defy+.zip)
2. Rooted via Defy+ BL7 method (sig)
3. Sndinit 2.3 (you should use 2.0, because some said they had problems with the 2.3 version) i am writing this a week later, so I hope this is correct
5. camera did NOT work
What I did NOT get to work (yet):
1. update-CyanMobile-eXperience-Defy-20130502-Release.zip
2. WajkIUI_multilang_3.1.27.zip
3.
Unfortunately "not working" means usually no more bootups, no way to get into custom recovery for restoring or reflashing, so you'll have to start all over again:
1. Flash first sbf (sig)
2. Flash second sbf for root (sig)
3. Install SndInit 2.0
4. boot into recovery
5. flash your new flavour
...tbc
for supporters
If someone managed to get a custom ROM to work, please provide following informations:
Build# of the "wrong" sbf
sbf's used for root (there are already 2 known combinations, CN & CEE)
used SndInit (should be greater than 2.0 i guess)
full flash instructions
which recovery used for wiping
which one for flashing
how many reboots
approx. duration of the process
ROM Version and build
Information about 2nd boot or 2nd init and when to set it
Does the camera work?
Please, ONLY BL7 stucking ROMs, this is a special thread for special cases.

Well, sorry for huuge delays, but I am now on MoKee 34.1 because Rom lags or responsiveness is no longer an issue on Android 4.3

I might remove the restriction of GB based Roms, but basically every 2nd Boot Rom works so i might collect only Rom trees, no single versions. Any opinions on this?
