Hello,
A family member just got the Nexus I'm looking to root it and install a ROM The stock ROM sucks...
So..To root should I use THE GALAXY NEXUS TOOLKIT or use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362957? Does it matter?
As for a ROM it seems most of you geeks like AOSP because the dev is responsive and his ROM rocks. Will this ROM improve battery life over others? Or should I wait for CM9 to be official on the Nexus?
Thanks
Use the toolkit, and use Android Open Kang Project (AOKP), Bigxie or GummyNex for a ROM. All are well-supported and interesting.
Lol @ geeks

I would suggest exactly the same with Franco's kernel.
Aaaaand which one is AOKP rom ? [ROM] Android Open Kang Project - maguro - build 23?
what about [ROM][16-02-12][AOSP][4.0.3] Codename Android 1.4.0 | Fully Open Source |
?
What is the difference between AOKP and non AOKP roms ?
Sorry for noobish and stupid questions
Thanks
+1 for aokp. I prefer lean kernel but franco is good as well.
AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project developed by Team Kang. So I think you should know which one it is. Non AOKP are ROMs not developed by Team Kang. lol...
Ok i got it
Downloading it atm
And those are not Cm right? (Another stupid q )

Has there been an official release for 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 yet for the GSM version I am still on 4.0.2 have seen nothing from googs

I don't think so. A bunch of the roms are on 4.0.3 and I heard a that 4.0.4 was supposed to come out mid march... ?
Some people are on 4.0.4 with current roms and are doing well with it and others like me, have just stuck around with 4.0.3 with the 4.0.4 radios.
Roman, from aokp, says he won't have 4.0.4 until Google drops the source code.

Hi,
I want to install a custom rom to my Gnex. The only thing i have done so far is to change my device model yakjuwx to yakju (I unlocked bootloader and locked it again after the proccess).
I am going to unlocked it again and root my device.
However I don't know from which rom to start. I used to have a i9001 in which there is lttle development so everything is easier.
It 'd be very helpful if u could tell me which rom is the best or at least from where to start..
***sorry for my bad english

Try latest rasbean build! It's superfast and the batterylife i pretty good. One of the smoothest roms I've ever tried. You can find it at fitsnugly.eutoskank.com, select rasbeanjelly, then your phone. Gapps is included I am using it with latest franvo kernel, r268. Awesome combination. But if you want a rom that you can customize very much, you should try out codename android, the nightlies or the stable version! Instead of Franco kernel you can try out Trinity kernel, the colors are so sexy man! haha. But you can set them on franco kernel too if you want.
I hope you find your own combination that fits you needs most
Edit: You can find the Codename Android nightlies here: http://goo.im/devs/codenamedroid/nightlies/cna_maguro Just pick the latest one

I was in the same place as you were a month ago. You'll most likely swap ROMs like socks in a few days or weeks. I've run CodenameAndroid (go for nightlies), AOKP JB and CyanogenMod 10. Of the three, CyanogenMod 10 is the lightest on tweaks and CodenameAndroid has the most, but that's not necessarily a good thing if you don't want to fiddle with everything.
For kernels Franco's kernel is good, get the 384MHz version, 268 nightly -- I've tested it and got better benchmark results if that's your thing.
AOKP has become my new favorite custom ROM to flash. i have it on my Nexus 7, and when i used to own the ASUS TF101 and Galaxy Nexus, both had it as well.
i'm looking into flashing AOKP to my Galaxy S3 now, but i'm a little confused what's the difference between these:
[ROM] AOKP(Jellybean)Task & Ktoonsez (10/5) (AT&T/Rogers)
[KERNEL][AT&T][AOSP/Touchwiz][JELLYBEAN & ICS][10/3/2012] KT747 - LG8 - KTweaker (i thought custom ROMs already come with a custom kernal?)
How to flash AOKP custom ROM on the AT&T Galaxy S3 SGH-I747
[ROM][JB] Unofficial AOKP D2ATT (obviously unofficial, but is there a difference?)
and AOKP JB Build 4
in the past, i've just looked for my device on the official AOKP website, but the d2att device isn't available on any of the 4 JB builds.
so yea, any advice on which one is the most current and stable version i should use? or should i wait for it to possibly be added to build 5?
and an unrelated question... is it possible to change the default location/folder when performing a nandroid backup? i would like it to get saved to my micro SD card instead.
I've been using task and ktoonzes aokp since, well since it was ICS lol. I can't really compare it to any other ROM as I haven't seen a need to flash anything else. Ktoonzes kernel adds more functionality over the "stock" kernel that comes with it including over clock and under volt not to mention his own app to control the kernel settings and a widget to keep an eye on it.
thank you for the information.
i just noticed that the [ROM][JB] Unofficial AOKP D2ATT thread has some thanks to task and Ktoonsez for contributions.
and the Android Authority article links to a Ktoonsez download link.
i guess i should just go to the source of all these and flash the [ROM] AOKP(Jellybean)Task & Ktoonsez (10/5) (AT&T/Rogers) one?
All you need is tasks rom
No brainer

You don't want this one. http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34159-romjb-unofficial-aokp-d2att/ . Its some guy that has no clue what he's doing.
This is the most updated and it gets kept updated.

lol. thanks for the info task! :good:
Hey guys, running paranoid 2.53 on my Verizon nexus. I have read all the stories before getting the phone that batt life is not great. Agreed. So I wanted to play around as I have never changed kernels before.
One thing I was wondering is what type of kernel is included in this ROM. Another thing is I got the Franco kernel updater. I have been reading for days on xda and such what a kernel does, how, why and such but I haven't found any answers regarding Franco or lean kernel w pa 2.53. Can I just DL and flash right from the app or is there a process to get a new kernel and which do u guys prefer. I want battery life over perf but I don't want a sluggish phone. Is there also a way to backup my stock kernel other than a complete nandroid. Would I backup boot and the system image. Im using twrp 2321
Thanks for any Advice and thoughts

If you wanna brick Your smartphone then flash it...
Different video drivers & kernel for different GPU and different radio, bootloader...
You will brick Your Gnexus dude
i have try some other rom 4.4...
so far i like rom CM11(kitkang)...
Try the omni based FML KitKat, it's smooth and mostly bug free.
If it helps I am enjoying shiny rom 1/4/14. It has gotten rid of the graphical glitches and had good battery life. I have had only one reboot in the last two days.

SlimKat is another good option. Glad that we are slowly moving towards stability in terms of KitKat roms. Now we can use the phone a little bit more i guess
Tried CM and LiquidSmooth ROMs. Both are stable and have very few issues and are improving everyday. Hopefully OMNI starts to become more stable soon. I want to try that multi window feature.

vanir rom works well too
Just look for a good 4.4 rom for Galaxy Nexus. The unofficial CM for example is very good. Flashing the Nexus 4 image will ruin your phone.
Cm remix 4.4 is really awesome and stable.

Do not flash it like this way.
It wont success and may be get a damage on your GNX.
If you want to try to run Android 4.4 on your GNX, there are lots of 3rd rom, like CM, AOKP, Slimkat...etc
Running the cyanogen 11 and am very impressed with it so far. Got the Xenon ROM sitting in memory and will flash that eventually.
CM11 is really running like a charm on my gnx
Im using SlimKat and its pretty great so far, aslong as your do the artifact patch
Hello guys is there a way to flash the factory image from recovery ? I broke the usb port. Thanks in advance-
