Why is Nexus 2-4 times slower then my G2x ? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I did speed test on both and I get 5-7.5 mbps on G2x and 2-2.5 mbps on Nexus with 1500ms ping....
Is this fixed in ROMs ?

I had a g2x too and I'm getting same speeds on my gnex in my area.

Will switch SIM cards from one to another and will test again now....

I am getting the same speeds as the G2x as well.

Yep, looks like its the SIM card / account problem

Is it new service on T-mobile? If so, you might need to wait a few days. Some people report slow speeds for a few days for some reason and then it goes to normal.

I would say flash a north American radio if you haven't already my speed increased by like 3 mbps
Sent from my LG-P509 using Tapatalk 2

I moved from the G2x and my speeds are exactly the same.

Not just to join the chorus, but my speeds are the same as my G2x, and I find that I maintain connection in low signal areas better than the G2x on the V21e software build (it didn't get the OTA before I bought the Nexus and switched my sim card).

I'm actually getting much better service on my gnex than my G2X. I'm getting 4G now at my house where I was getting edge on my G2X.

Edit: tested again. getting anywhere from 2 to 4 mbps with around 1500ms ping. the other SIM gets anywhere from 5 to 8 mbps. Tmobile said 2-4 is acceptable for 4G network and they have no idea why another SIM cars is up to 50% faster....and i am obviously not capped yet

Waited and I still get 2-3 times slower speeds on Nexus with my SIM card. Will try to exchange SIM tomorrow

haven't checked lately

So months later I decided to check again....and its the same ****. Old G2X hits anywhere between 6-7mbps and Nexus max is 4.4mbps.
When I switch SIMs its the other way around, and I already replaced my SIM card and called Tmobile about this issue. No one seems to know whats going on and Tmobile is not able to assist me. Sometimes Nexus drops to 3mbps and yet G2X is ALWAYS around 6
How is this possible ?

maybe your sim card problem
or the network or something

T-Mobile Sample S2 has faster HSPA+

Hello
Located in NYC
I was at the T-Mobile Retail store to test the Galaxy S2's speedtest.net.
The speed I got from it was in between 9 Mbps - 15 Mbps.
However, I tried my own S2 and I am only getting 3-4Mbps
??? Hmmmmm how did that happen???
I called 611 to troubleshoot the issue, however the rep told me that it could be their network.
I asked if my old SIM has anything to do with it, she said the SIM does not matter.
Sigh... just wondering what you guys in NYC is getting
Thanks
In RI i get 14-18.

Thank you for your reply. I will try to call 611 asking for a free SIM. That stupid rep did not allowed me to get a free SIM.
Some stores have 3G cell sites built into them, which will give the phones in the store faster speeds than just outside the store.
I tested the phone with old sim card in NYC back in Dec. In chinatown it avg. 18-21mbps in Brooklyn was much slower, 5-8mbps. I got it used so no updated sim card that came with it. Now back in Puerto Rico where im now, its 8-10mbps. Im guess some part in NYC takes advantages of new HSDPA+ and some parts not.
Time of day, network traffic, signal strength, apps running on your phone, the cell site itself...these are all variables that can cause variance in data speeds.
personally, i think the Speedtest.net app itself is buggy. I can be in the same spot, run 3 tests, and get 3 different results. I've also run tests with the same type of phones sitting next to each other, and get completely different results.
Not all sites are pushing out the same speeds. Some may be pushing 42mb/s, while others may still be doing 21mb/s, and there are probably even some 7.2mb/s sites in "4G" cities. You can probably drive down the street and get a drastically different result.
Although the SIM that came in the box is new, you shouldn't see drastic changes in your old SIM vs the new one unless your old SIM was more than 2 years old. T-Mobile updated their SIM cards a few years back to better connect with the 3G/4G network. The SIM that came in the box (GBA SIM) is required for the Wi-Fi Calling, but that's it.
I live in Brooklyn, and my new white SG2 should be coming via UPS tomorrow (hopefully early in the day!). Will post results after I get the phone. Question - if the phone comes with its own new SIM, how do I get my info/acct transferred to the new SIM? Can I do this over the phone or do I need to go into a TMO store? In the meantime I can just pop in my old SIM and use it right away, correct?
Also, FWIW, on my MT4G I always get consistently faster speeds in Manhattan vs. Brooklyn. In my apartment I usually float around 3-5 mbps. I'm hoping I'll pick up a little extra with the SG2 but who knows...not a big issue though since when at home I usually hook up to the wifi.
You definitely need the new Sim. And that broad on the customer line lied. The Sim DOES matter.

That is not true at all. I am on the $30 prepaid plan and used the sim that came with some cheap phone and I can easily hit 12-15mbps however Wi-Fi calling doesn't work. Please don't spread false facts. Yes, there's an updated sim but rarely ever will it make a difference except where I mentioned.

@Sunsean, if you are coming from a mt4g, you probably don't have any info on your sim card. Just in case, you cab throw the old Sim in your galaxy, go to contacts > menu > import/export > import from Sim card. Then call customer care (or go into a store) to have your new Sim that came with the phone activated.

Try a speed test at night, at night I can get 15MBPS, 19 max...
During the day I average 3-4 and get 6 MAX.
It's terrible during the day.
Those are exactly throttle speeds. .06 mbps. You sure you're good on data? This has happened to me too though when I hadn't gone over. When my account was transferred from a consumer line to a dealer line I started randomly getting throttle speeds or slower. No phone rep could figure out what was wrong, I went through several SIM's, and even did a warranty exchange on the phone. Eventually my tmo rep did something on the back end and the problem went away. I wish I knew what he did so I could make a recommendation. Either way, good luck.

3g sim vs 4g sim

I have searched the internet and the forums and I can not get a clear difference between the 4g sim that comes with the phone and the 3g one that came with my g1. Could this be why my network speeds are so low? .5-2mbps
there is no such thing. There is only a simcard that is wifi calling enabled and one that is not.

I honestly think this topic is debatable. I used to have an HD2 which I got back when it first came out which was what, ~3 years ago? Anywho, after I got my SGSII via mail I simply just swapped out the SIM cards thinking it would make no difference. The thing with the old sim is that it would constantly drop connection and the ping was ridiculously high. When the SIM card was placed back into the HD2, data worked perfectly fine as intended. I activated the new SIM after a few days and voila, data was properly working on the SGSII.
guess one way to make sure and take a trip to the tmobile store on my lunch break... I will report back if any difference occurs... any other test i should preform besides a speed test?

[Q] Why is the ping on my GN twice that of my N1?

Using the same SIM, ping times on my GN are around 330, while they are about 175 on my N1. Data rates are generally comparable, although sometimes significantly higher on my GN.
This is using the current version of the SpeedTest.net app.
Any ideas?
Have you tried different radios?
No, I've only had the phone a few days and it's stock, not even rooted yet.
What carrier? how old is your SIM card?
If you have a really outdated SIM card, you may need to get a new one to fully take advantage of 4G speeds.

I've also noticed in Miami T-mobile my Nexus One with same sim card as Galaxy Nexus had better pings. My Gnex for some reason pings atleast 100-150 higher constantly but the speeds are way better. I've tried different radios too. And have had the same issue on my two different Galaxy Nexus.

I have a new SIM card coming so I can try the $30/mo prepaid plan; we'll see if that makes a diff, but I don't really expect it to...
Good to know I'm not the only one!
TMO will charge you for a replacement, they are cheaper at Amazon, cheaper yet on eBay. You can also order the new activation kit from their website for $2.

Yes, please let me know if the new sim helps. So if you order from another place for cheaper you can just go to a tmobile store to activate it?
Also I've been doing some reading and some people have mentioned the galaxy nexus idles on 3g and there's a small delay when network activity starts up before it is handed off to hspa+. So if you do a test on the speedtest app you can hit restart test right after the first one is done and you'll notice a much better ping (and probably improvement in speeds) since the modem is already in hspa+.
It's happened to me where my first test will be at like 1500ms but my second test immediately after is at 130ms.
I wonder if they are any custom roms currently available that make this 3g to hspa+ handoff a bit smoother? On the other hand I'm assuming the phone idling at 3g probably helps battery life.

I'm sure it's all area driven. I'm considering switching to TMobile with this Note because the savings are incredible, but the coverage and speed compared to Verizon are absurd no matter where I go. Very disappointing.

I have been in similar situations before. I get 4g full bar but less than 300kpbs near a local shopping plaza. Less than 1/8 mile away I get 12mbps speeds. Go figure. I was testing out on both my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 same time so it is definitely not a phone problem.
I hate to say it, but this phone's speeds just aren't acceptable to me after using LTE. Sounds like a whiny sort of complaint, but spending this much on a superphone..I did about a billion speedtests around eastern MI and it was rare to catch a good 4G signal like they demoed in the store. They also seem to have issues with their signal penetrating buildings. I love the phone, and would love to get away from Verizon and maybe use the new Nexus device too but they aren't there yet for me.

Last night was averaging 29mbps and highest was 31.59mbps in the burbs of Chicago. Yet when I am in Downtown Chicago which supposedly has 42mbps, I only get 5-8mbps.
I travel all over the east coast for work, and know T-Mobiles network inside and out. I travel to small cities as much as big cities, so being able to connect to a network is important. If I were new to T-Mobile, and the Note 2 was my first phone, I'd think T-mobiles network sucked. I have 2 lines, a Sensation I use to mainly to tether with (10gb plan), and my main line the Galaxy Note 2 (unlimited 4g plan). I keep getting a message saying, "not connected to network" in areas where I should definitely be on the edge network, or roaming. The Sensation will be connected on a network when the Note will give the not connected message. My overall speeds in 4g areas are better with the Note than the Sensation, but not in secluded areas.
When the Sensation first came out, it wasn't connecting to T-Mobiles network correctly, then they sent out an update that fixed the problems. My first couple of weeks with the Sensation were hell because of that. Now I'm dealing with it again with the Note 2. I'm hoping that they fixed the data issues in the first ota update, which I hope happens soon.
Here are some speeds I've gotten in the past few days...
Dothan Al - 2.03 mbps
Jacksonville FL suburbs - 17.69
Harrisburg PA - 5.45
Chattanooga TN - 2.31
us231 on FL/AL border - .88
Atlanta 14.81
Jacksonville and Charlotte has better speeds than Philly. I've yet to find a place with over 20mbps

Yeah i live in fort meyer and my coverage is pretty damn good...
My area is rated good to excellent according to T-Mobile, but that obviously is subjective. The step back from LTE just isn't doable for me on a premium device. I'm glad I learned that while i had time to back out. I understand better what a huge sacrifice of tech it is on the Nexus phone now. But I envy those it doesn't impact obviously.
It could always be worse op. I'm currently with sprint but will be switching to tmo in a little while so I've been lurking the forums. I have the nexus, a 4g lte phone and I pay for unlimited data, yet I only average 200kbps on 3g, and Saint Louis will be lucky to see sprint lte by the end of 2013.
