T-Mobile Sample S2 has faster HSPA+ - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hello
Located in NYC
I was at the T-Mobile Retail store to test the Galaxy S2's speedtest.net.
The speed I got from it was in between 9 Mbps - 15 Mbps.
However, I tried my own S2 and I am only getting 3-4Mbps
??? Hmmmmm how did that happen???
I called 611 to troubleshoot the issue, however the rep told me that it could be their network.
I asked if my old SIM has anything to do with it, she said the SIM does not matter.
Sigh... just wondering what you guys in NYC is getting
Thanks

In RI i get 14-18.

Thank you for your reply. I will try to call 611 asking for a free SIM. That stupid rep did not allowed me to get a free SIM.

Some stores have 3G cell sites built into them, which will give the phones in the store faster speeds than just outside the store.

I tested the phone with old sim card in NYC back in Dec. In chinatown it avg. 18-21mbps in Brooklyn was much slower, 5-8mbps. I got it used so no updated sim card that came with it. Now back in Puerto Rico where im now, its 8-10mbps. Im guess some part in NYC takes advantages of new HSDPA+ and some parts not.

Time of day, network traffic, signal strength, apps running on your phone, the cell site itself...these are all variables that can cause variance in data speeds.
personally, i think the Speedtest.net app itself is buggy. I can be in the same spot, run 3 tests, and get 3 different results. I've also run tests with the same type of phones sitting next to each other, and get completely different results.
Not all sites are pushing out the same speeds. Some may be pushing 42mb/s, while others may still be doing 21mb/s, and there are probably even some 7.2mb/s sites in "4G" cities. You can probably drive down the street and get a drastically different result.
Although the SIM that came in the box is new, you shouldn't see drastic changes in your old SIM vs the new one unless your old SIM was more than 2 years old. T-Mobile updated their SIM cards a few years back to better connect with the 3G/4G network. The SIM that came in the box (GBA SIM) is required for the Wi-Fi Calling, but that's it.

I live in Brooklyn, and my new white SG2 should be coming via UPS tomorrow (hopefully early in the day!). Will post results after I get the phone. Question - if the phone comes with its own new SIM, how do I get my info/acct transferred to the new SIM? Can I do this over the phone or do I need to go into a TMO store? In the meantime I can just pop in my old SIM and use it right away, correct?
Also, FWIW, on my MT4G I always get consistently faster speeds in Manhattan vs. Brooklyn. In my apartment I usually float around 3-5 mbps. I'm hoping I'll pick up a little extra with the SG2 but who knows...not a big issue though since when at home I usually hook up to the wifi.

You definitely need the new Sim. And that broad on the customer line lied. The Sim DOES matter.

That is not true at all. I am on the $30 prepaid plan and used the sim that came with some cheap phone and I can easily hit 12-15mbps however Wi-Fi calling doesn't work. Please don't spread false facts. Yes, there's an updated sim but rarely ever will it make a difference except where I mentioned.

@Sunsean, if you are coming from a mt4g, you probably don't have any info on your sim card. Just in case, you cab throw the old Sim in your galaxy, go to contacts > menu > import/export > import from Sim card. Then call customer care (or go into a store) to have your new Sim that came with the phone activated.

Just called Tmobile customer service and the guy got me a free new Sim card. I still have not gotten the Sim yet, but will update on the result. this new customer service guy did mention that the new Sim should improve the 4g service.

I get surprisingly good speeds around 68th & 2nd, usually 12+mbps. From what I understand, the upload speeds for 4G seem to be capped at 1.7mbps? Can somebody please confirm for me? Thanks in advance.

I also live in New York city. HSPA+ is superb here. In the Bronx I get an average of 9 to 14 mbps down. And I'm on an older sim card, so be exact, the one that came with my mytouch 3g. Now that's an old sim.

[Q] One X on Straight. talk

Will the htc one x international. Version. Work. On stright talk
Shouldn't be a problem. If you get an international you can get the appropriate sim card from straight talk and be good to go.
I'm activated on straight talk with no problems. Just be sure to order the ATT compatible microsim. The only hard part is making sure you type in the APN setting correctly.

how fast is the data speed on straight talk
I get between 1mbps and 2mbps depending on where I'm at and what time I run the tests. It's not amazing but it sure is faster than I was getting on Sprint's network. How fast you get is determined mainly by how good AT&T is in the area. Check the coverage on att.com/coverage and check if your area has been updated to '4G'.
I'm not sure if real AT&T subscribers get better speeds or not. The APN that you use isn't one of the '4G' APNs that you'd have provisioned on the account if you signed up with AT&T and got a 4G HSPA+ data package. I need somebody with an iPhone around here to let me grab their SIM so I can run a few tests, as the iPhone data plan provisions both the 4G HSPA+ APN and also the standard APN that feature phones use.
wow! i didn't even think about ST before. i thought there phones were like CDMA phones without a sim. they offer unlimited everything but international for 499/year, which is under 42 per month. that beats Red Pocket's 59.99.
but will i get full ATT 4G/H+ with their sim? it just says mobile web. we don't have LTE, and i don't want it anyway. i only have 2gb to use. i sent ST an e-mail, but i'd rather hear from someone on here actually using it.
EDIT: i guess above is a close enough answer. i just don't want to be staring at loading web pages or buffering Youtube videos.
I just did this. My international OneX will be picked up at Fedex after 2pm today.
I wont get my sim card from straightalk till friday or saturday.
I have been a Tmobile customer for years and did not want to go to AT&T. Nor did I want the One S. I was bummed Tmobile was not getting the One X.
So I chose Straight Talk and will be leaving tmobile.
I will report back once I have everything up and running and let you know how it all works out.
From what I have read in the straight talk forums you should get full speeds. I could be wrong though as I have never used AT&T or Straight Talk so take that with a grain of salt.
Also - I have read you should not Tether your phone or they will cancel your service. Its also advisable to stay around 2GB of data a month. Some people report no problems with more but since I only was using around 1GB a month on Tmobile this will not be an issue for me.
Straight talk does not get full "4G" speeds. It piggybacks on the AT&T network and the towers give priority to AT&T phones. You will get HSPA but not HSPA+

I just activated my one x on straight talk a couple days ago. Using the standard straight talk att.mvno APN, i am getting close to 6000kb down and 1300kb up. Granted, I am in a smaller market(Lexington, KY), but the speeds are absolutely incredible compared to sprint. Even on WiMAX I wasnt getting those speeds.
Im on straighttalk with a att white note and mines say 4G at the top. I think it does get hspa+

I was getting 6mb down last night in chicago North Side
At work downtown its much slower. Maybe 2mb down.
Also - if you are using speedtest.net app. It somehow can get blocked. Way around this is to delete everything from the proxy line.
Worked like a charm.

i just ordered the $45 unlimited ATT micro sim. they charged some bs additional fees and it went over 60. i hope the months are really 45 each and not with hidden added fees tacked on. if it's not 45, then Red Pocket may actually be better. we'll see. :/
Isn't the microsim $15 and the mandatory one month plan $45?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
Yes, that is what I just paid...however, I still don't have service after activating the ATT micro SIM last night on-line. I called StraightTalk this morning and spoke to someone, who transferred me to the "Department that handles ATT Micro Sims for Non Straight Talk Phones" (That's what he said). He was not able to get anything working, gave me a ticket # and said to reboot and try again after another 24 hours?
Does anyone know if the HTC One X Asian Version (SingTel) falls under all the "International" forums?
Also, does the bootloader need to be unlocked for the Straight Talk ATT Sim to work? I didn't need to do anything to my TMO USA SIM, I just cut it and put it in...talk, text and web all work (Edge of course)
Thanks in advance for any input...
Is it 45 per month or more like 50? I hope it works on my 1x. If not I will take my 63.xx to red pocket.
My understanding is that porting a number over can take time, if that's what folks are doing. Even Google Voice warns about a possible 24 hour delay, if I remember correctly. For better info re Straight Talk try Howard Forums.

Thanks for the info...mine is a new number, no porting involved. I will check out the Howard Forums and hope to find some help there. Straight Talk is useless...

Why is Nexus 2-4 times slower then my G2x ?

I did speed test on both and I get 5-7.5 mbps on G2x and 2-2.5 mbps on Nexus with 1500ms ping....
Is this fixed in ROMs ?

Is it new service on T-mobile? If so, you might need to wait a few days. Some people report slow speeds for a few days for some reason and then it goes to normal.
I would say flash a north American radio if you haven't already my speed increased by like 3 mbps

I moved from the G2x and my speeds are exactly the same.
Not just to join the chorus, but my speeds are the same as my G2x, and I find that I maintain connection in low signal areas better than the G2x on the V21e software build (it didn't get the OTA before I bought the Nexus and switched my sim card).
I'm actually getting much better service on my gnex than my G2X. I'm getting 4G now at my house where I was getting edge on my G2X.

haven't checked lately
So months later I decided to check again....and its the same ****. Old G2X hits anywhere between 6-7mbps and Nexus max is 4.4mbps.
When I switch SIMs its the other way around, and I already replaced my SIM card and called Tmobile about this issue. No one seems to know whats going on and Tmobile is not able to assist me. Sometimes Nexus drops to 3mbps and yet G2X is ALWAYS around 6
How is this possible ?

At&t hspa+/vpn question

So I recently upgraded to s3 from my captivate and the internet is significantly slower than when I was on my captivate . I tried flashing all the available modems and the VPN settings I can find on here and my down was 1.4mbs and .160mbs up (was 3-5mb down and 1.1 up on my captivate) I tried dialing *#2263# but it doesn't let me open up the menu to check the bands to see if hsupa is enabled .
BTW I don't have the lte sim I cut my old sim down. They said if I upgrade my sim they will remove my unlimited data . But I don't see why it would matter since this is just a hspa + issue and I don't have lte here yet anyways. And I'm on lh1 modem currently .
So any one have any either ideas to fix this issue?

Yup corporate. My rep told me they don't know how I'm still on this plan because they got rid of unlimited for awhile now. The account shows that my captivate was using dumb phone internet lol. So he said if I change the sim card number they wouldn't be able to select the same plan through his portal. I don't wanna pay an extra 20$ for only 4gb on Lte when I can keep the unlimited for less with hspa. So I'm trying to work my way around it.

Well, I know Verizon stopped grandfathering unlimited data plans for existing customers last spring if they upgraded their phone to LTE model, but I had no problem keeping mine with AT&T, who I've been with for more than a dozen years.

[Q] Anyone using T-Mobile on Captivate Glide?

Hey I was wondering if anyone has their Glide on T-Mobile's USA network and get 4G HSPA+ signal? If so could you put a speed test screenshot or tell me what the average speed you all get. Thinking about switching from AT&T. Thanks!!
I would imagine the only ones to be able to use H+ on Tmo would be the ones living in areas where Tmo has updated with the 1900 MHz band. But I may be wrong.
According to Wikipedia so I may be wrong, but the only frequency that I see missing on the glide is the 1700 MHz band and that contains the 4G T-Mobile has HSPA+ but I see videos on YouTube of people getting HSPA+ signal on their glides at nice speeds.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Tmo usually uses 1700 for H+, but they've rolled out 1900 in many markets, so the at&t phones, such as the Glide, may have H+ access in those markets. You can prolly google to find the markets where they currently provide 1900 MHz H+.
I've been bugging my girl to let me use her sim in my phone and she hides her phone like I'll steal it and break it lol.. she knows I mod and she fears change lol. Sorry bro I wanna try it to see if I wanna order a prepaid national unlimited or not.. its cheaper than my current provider and they gimme 4g where this provider gives me 2g just because I don't wanna contract.. lame asses anyhow.
I tried a T-Mobile SIM for a few days in Los Angeles in a Captivate Glide in September, 2012 and only got 2G Edge speeds of 100k or less...there are some markets where T-Mobile is deploying 1900mhz which works with the Glide but they are hit and miss at best. I'm now using a NET10 SIM on AT&T's network and getting up to 11Mbps...Straight Talk offers the same network/deal. My total monthly cost is around $46 with 2GB of data, which works for my purposes, at least. I was able to set up a T-Mobile SIM for a test for very little $$$ using one of their Small Business accounts...my activation and SIM fees were waived and the data was pro-rated by the day, which gave me a chance to do a real world test.
Hmmm good point. I was thinking of going to straight talk but the prepaid T Mobile plans are cheaper

The full port which you are talking about has a porting charge of like $20 or 30 bucks. Otherwise you can try it out for free when you just install the app. I like it but it is creating another hoop to jump through with the custom ROMs etc. I am still hunting for a slimmed down ROM for a daily driver.

Google Voice isn't cellphone service. You need to have service through a carrier to use it for calls.
Yes! Thanks for pointing that out. They haven't yet done a MVNO style network or anything like that yet. Word on the street is that Facebook is going to roll out something similar to GVoice fairly soon.
I never said it was. I'm thinking since 100 minutes isn't enough for some but 5GB is plenty in terms of voice calling and doing everything else for streaming

I know this has been asked a million times, but I'm hoping to get a concrete and up to date answer by asking again: Is there a way to get/will there be a way to get 3G with this phone on T-Mobile? I've seen a lot of people say that T-Mobile is working on something that will make it possible, are they still working on that? My HTC G2 got water spilled on it a while back and I suspect the antenna or whatever inside it got damaged, because my signal has been really weak, and I'm looking for another good Android qwerty phone in case I have to replace it.

[Q]-T-Mobile T889 SIM Card???

Does the the note 2 for T-Mobile use a custom sim card to get better speeds, I know it uses a microsim... But is there anything else to it thats different?
No the speeds rely on the modem installed.

Ahhh okay I installed this on my i317 How to Enable T-Mobile 3G/4G AWS Bands on AT&T Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317! and was wondering if I needed a certain sim card or not... At the T-Mobile store their note 2 (T889) gets 28MBPS and mine at the same store gets 14MBPS, so it's lead me to asking about this...
Before and after the mod my speeds were the same... I might add.
I wonder if when they roll out with LTE if I'll need to get a new sim then or not?
Actually tmo network may prioritize some customer during network congestion. My understanding is post pay customers have higher priority over prepaid. Corporate store probably has highest priority for their demo units to make a sell.

I normally get between 5 and 8 mb download speeds. In the center of my town I can get up to 15 sometimes but if I go 2 blocks away its back to 5. Close to the huge shopping mall by me i can get up to 25 but again, that's in a very small area. There are definitely areas with better antennas but they are still few and far between for me. I remember when I upgraded from my Vibrant to the Sensation, that the Sensation was supposed to get better speeds because of the antenna, yet I never saw a difference. Speeds actually seemed slower most of the time. Now, with the antenna we have on our N2, I STILL see the same speeds as I did with my Vibrant in most places. This doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. What is the purpose of a better antenna if there are barely any towers capable of giving you the better speeds? So obviously the phones with HSPA and HSPA+ antennas are only capable of giving you faster speeds if the TOWER you are connected to is capable of it. Honestly, I'm not crossing my fingers for LTE because it seems like these 2 areas around me will be the only ones that have it and I'm rarely ever in those places so I'll just spend most of my time pissed off that I'm not getting the speeds I should be. Tmobile may have a lot of towers in my area but unfortunately most of them are CRAP! Every time I buy a new phone with a better antenna, I get the hopes of actually being able to use my phone during intermission at the Blackhawks game like all the AT&T iPhone people can. Yet it always stays the same.
I guess what I'm trying to say is it all comes down to the tower you're connected to. I've never been able to get a definitive answer on all this but it does irritate me that a TMO store could enable their phones to get faster speeds than the phone we buy from them. That's total BS if it's true. Besides, couldn't I just go in the store, run some speed tests and they claim mine is defective because it's not getting the same speeds?
