For me, it was a pretty easy choice. I use wifi the majority of my day, at work and home. So I go for cost
Easy decision for me, I'm stuck on Verizon until I get rid of my ~$1100 in ETFs, plus the LTE is fantastic around here. It's nothing to pull 16 Mbps down.
Ez decision. Big red robs you and make you think you like it. Pay the money upfront for the phone and get your tmob plan to make it back in the short and long term.

Is the $50 premium worth it? Do you really need more than 7mbps down? I would say no unless you are tethering. GSM HSDPA+ is perfectly fine for a phone. Nobody needs 20mbps to stream media of any kind.

I was in the same boat on AT&T after having been bitten by the iPhone 4S bug. After a few weeks, I totally realized I never should have bought it. Battery life is great and all and the apps are well designed, but there is something about having the same phone as my mother that rubs me the wrong way. Verizon's LTE is mighty tempting as well and even though we just launched a few LTE devices on AT&T, none of them caught my eye.
I ultimately decided to go with importing since my monthly bill would be lower with my work discount. LTE is great, but I can't imagine doing anything with it that I can't do on AT&T's HSPA network. Plus with how the launch of this phone has gone, I didn't want to take the risk that this would be Verizon's first and last Nexus phone. Hopefully AT&T does decided to launch an LTE version of the Nexus in the next six months. If not I'll just wait for the next Nexus....
I would also add... if you plan to travel outside of north america get the gsm phone, cdma doesn't work outside of North America (ok china and india?)
also. i've been using tmobile and not at&t which is awesome where I live. (~9mbit/s down). I cannot speak to the battery usage of LTE, but I hear its terrible

It was easy for me.
Got the imported GN. Went into AT&T store renew my contract by getting a iphone 4S for 200 hoping that I would be able to sell it for 500+ on ebay etc. That would help me cover some of damage that importing GN did to my bank. lol.

Please explain what you can do on the LTE network that is impossible on a 7mbps+ HSDPA+ connection?
I use slingbox, tunein radio and SiriusXM without a hiccup.
How would Verizon make this stream better??
These outrageous LTE speeds only benefit users if you are tethering to download an .iso or something. Outside of that, it's marketing gold.

If I get the verizon lte model I may actually get the Big old Cheese during a wootoff for once with the better speeds and ping.
All of these posted speeds are nice, assuming that for both AT&T and Verizon provides the same level of coverage and network performance as promised. Even though my area is in HSDPA+, AT&T service is crap and isn't worth a damn during peaks times when I need to use my phone. I'd be lucky to get 1MB down if that.

This is *exactly* the problem. Here are my AT&T HSPA+ speeds on my GSM Galaxy Nexus:
From my house -- 5 mb/s
From random place in the west part of the city -- 10 mb/s
From downtown at 10 PM -- 5 mb/s
BUT, from downtown during the business day, when it matters -- 0.5 mb/s
It's what I call the football game effect. At a football game, AT&T phones get basically zero service, whereas Verizon's CDMA network is capable of normal speeds. Downtown has that same issue during the day, as will any crowded area (shopping mall, etc).
This is the reason why I'm likely going to switch to Verizon if they ever release the phone. Enjoying LTE has less to do with the crazy 50 mb/s speeds than it does with enjoying reasonable speeds even in crowded areas. I'll still keep the GSM phone for international travel, though.
I wanted a GSM device and I didn't want anything a carrier had a chance to mess with. This meant importing. Yeah, I paid about $750, but it was worth it. I get updates prompt from Google, I don't worry about carrier apps that can't be uninstalled, I can change phones whenever I want without having to call or get permission from my carrier, and I'm stuck on AT&T for a while anyway.
I'm very happy with my purchase. Honestly, with the VZW one, you'll be tied in to a contract anyway. You'll end up paying more than the phone's cost over that time regardless. The GSM import is just more up front. And if you can get WiFi fairly often, then it's worth it to go with the cheaper plan.
Also, to reply to the poster above me: I haven't had any issues with speed in Boston on AT&T. It seems pretty consistent. Maybe your area is more of a problem area? I know a lot of people hate on AT&T, but I've found their network to be quite stable.
Can anyone explain this to me ? All I hear is LTE kills battery, so whats the point of LTE when T-mobile HSPA+ 42Mbps has pretty much the same speed as LTE without causing any battery drain. And why would you need 30Mbps anyway on a limited data plan ? My current Tmobile 3G (not 4G or HSPA+) pulls anywhere from 2.5-5.0 Mbps right now....on older HD2 and Nexus One
GSM version of Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile does not go up to 41Mbps speeds. It can only go up to 21Mb (this is the reasoning why Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile went with Qualcomm's CPU instead of Samsung's Exynos to hit 41Mbps speeds), this is all speaking theoretically as well. Realistically, I haven't gotten to those speeds.
And people "need 30Mbps" on their phones simply because.... they can.
HSPA+ in its current implementation is definitely not as fast as Verizon's LTE, but as you said it surely is fast and it is more than enough for most people. You can definitely expect upwards of 10mbps down, which is great.
Its really a personal call. Some people are on Verizon because its the only carrier available consistently in their area, or they've been a long-time customer, or they're part of a family plan with others on Verizon.
If you're on T-mobile and happy with your service, you're definitely saving money staying with them. If you can buy it unlocked it is definitely a good choice. You're not missing out on anything by staying with T-Mo and the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus.

My buddy has been testing his Nexus and Droid X on Verizon....Nexus got up to 27mbps and DroidX on 3G pulled only 500kbps. I mean I would rather get constant 2-3mbps then switchs between LTE 27m and CDMA 500k. I want to switch to Verizon because it will be the same price as Tmobile, but I am affraid that LTE will kill battery and CDMA is dirt slow. I am in Boston area by the way.
also some reviews say that LTE kills battery while car charging....this just scares me.....i can stream music + use Google navigation at the same time and have brightness at auto and i still dont charge my phone in car....my 1250 battery in HD2 lasts 12-14 hours on that heavy use.

Both of these things are very true.
I have the LTE nexus, and yes, LTE does do a number on the battery, and yes, it is ever so slightly thicker. however, I'm pulling 10 mb/s down in a very poor coverage area, and a reliable 40+ mb/s down when I get closer to the city. (I live on an away facing side of a hill a few miles outside of a town). Also, without 4g, atleast in my area, I can pull 1-2 mb/s down, but thats not as reliable. I like that speed, and I am willing to charge my phone twice in a day.
In all reality, you wont notice too much of a difference between 10-20 mb/s (HSPA+) and 30-50 mb/s (LTE in my area) on a phone. What you will notice is the difference between coverage and no coverage. Which again favors the Verizon model.
These are THEORETICAL max speeds you are talking about.
In reality the speeds you get will be no where close to the theoretical max speeds the technology can handle. Those speeds might be attainable if you are the only one on the network and are standing under a cell tower.
T-Mobile HSPA+ speeds in NYC are 5.4mbps down, and 1.6mbps up (tested on my friend's International Galaxy Nexus)
LTE max theoretical speed is 299.6 mbps. In reality the speeds I tested in NYC on my Verizon Galaxy Nexus are 26.79mbps down and 7.20mbps up.

Results will vary but I pull 1-1.5Mbps on 3g so I can live with that. Verizon is the only carrier at my house. T-Mobile doest have coverage in the rural area where I live. If I went with them I'd only have service at work and while running errands downtown.
I get 3g at home and LTE just a few miles away. Part of me wishes that I could use T-Mobile but its not practical where I live and do business.
One last thing, LTE reception is great in the basement of my workplace!

It is almost important to note that LTE is not only faster, but also capable of keeping the signal while you are moving rather fast. Like in cars and trains

I think you are answering your own question. TMo and AT&T will be slower but use less battery. In the end I'd just decide if you want to be on Verizon or want a GSM phone. Your call.

LTE does kill the battery, but there is an extended battery (Still, I'm not sure how well the battery life improves with the extended battery)
The speed is all about how you feel and what you need. I'd say if you get great LTE coverage in your area and where you're going to be and you'd be fine with the smaller battery life and such, go for the LTE model. HSPA+ speeds are proven to be slower than the LTE speeds (i've seen some users get up to 15-16 down and 12-13 UP while HSPA+ get's us 8-10 DOWN 5-9 UP) But what are you going to do with the 15 mb/s speed?
Since you are T-Mobile, I don't know if you're going to have to switch data plans to access the HSPA+ speeds as some people who are on AT&T (including me) had to do this as well.

lol...not that easy. I am on Tmo with contract (200 to break now and 100 in a month) I very much prefer GSM over Verizon, but my wife doesn't get any service at work. I am somewhat happy with Tmo, I get service everywhere but when I go places like skiing there is usually just 2g with GPRS or EDGE at best.....I have no idea about Verizon. My battery is just amazing.... I never use any chargers other then at night. Price for service will be the same at both, but I will have to make new 2 year contract at Verizon, I will also get Nexus for myself at $150 and Incredible for wife for free....so new phones is nice to get... my wife not really happy with current Nexus One and I would love to have GN. If I stay with Tmo.... paying 650+ for NS is pricy....

Well, lets weigh out the pros and cons.
VERIZON
Pros:
1) You only spend about 400 going with Verizon.
2) Your wife may get signal at work.
Cons:
1) Battery life using LTE (But you can always turn off LTE)
2) Your wife may not get signal at work. (You never know..)
TMO
Pros:
1) You stay with a company that you've known and have been with for a while.
2) You get to have the flexibility of staying on a GSM provider. Meaning you get the freedom of switching world phones whenever you need to and not having to get it activated and what not.
Cons:
1) You spend more money. (About 250 more just for the GN, and maybe more for your wife's new phone.
2) Your wife will still not get any signal at work.
I guess its really what makes your wife happy. ;D Kidding. I'd bet on Verizon, but only if having a weak battery and not having places to charge your phone aren't complete deal breakers.
Speed won't really be a BIG BIG factor because while LTE and HSPA realtime speeds do differ, the coverage area for both aren't super complete. In both cases, you'll be constrained to 3G/HSPA. But then again this has to do with your coverage area that we know nothing about.
going to Verizon with 2 new phones, Google Voice porting, and paying Tmobile cancelation fee should all be pretty much covered by selling my tmo phones. My wife doesnt really care if she gets service at work she is not picky. In reallity i guess its all about me wanting Nexus and better coverage, but cdma and lte is a big compromise for me.
i'll figure this out soon.....
Think of it this way,
You can get 2 Ferraris:
One with the original Ferrari engine.
And one with 4 cylinder engine in it.
You will do 30 mpg on your 4 cylinder engine Ferrari and will get to the same place as the other Ferrari goes, but just a "little bit" slower.
I made the switch to Verizon and not planing on swapping to a 4 cylinder engine any time soon.

Anything you can do on a home internet service.
I've been running the Speed Test app and I was getting crazy high ping (1,500+) consistently and getting between 7Mbps-9Mbps download with around 1.5-1.9Mbps upload. I was using my old SIM card from my N1. I live in a "Very Good 4G" coverage area.
I went to a T-Mobile store today and got a new SIM card to see if that was the issue. My ping DRASTICALLY decreased (88-90) but my download/upload speeds also took a hit (5-7Mbps down and 1-2Mbps up).
Talking to the rep got me absolutely no where. She insisted because its not a T-Mobile phone, I won't get 4G or very high speeds. I insisted it is equipped with HSPA+21 and should be getting better speeds. She said there was nothing she could do and I should call Google...
Are 9Mbps an "acceptable" speed or should I try calling T-Mobile technical support and have them troubleshoot it?
(I changed radios from stock shipped from Google to the newest US one last night).

Pretty sure I responded to your other topic about this in a different thread w/ a long explanation so I'll give you the condensed version here:
Those speeds are completely normal for a T-mobile phone with a 21mbps HSPA+ radio. I would never expect to consistently see 9mbps on this device. If you regularly get 5-7mbps with good pings and can get upwards of 9mbps in off-peak times I'd say you're right on spot with everyone else.
I would never expect a random CS/store rep to be able to distinguish what kinds of speeds you'll get on an unlocked device. They know about the phones they offer directly and are supposed to indicate that they don't support or troubleshoot non-T-Mobile devices. When you buy unlocked you deal with it yourself. Of course you know that it has a 21mbps HSPA+ radio, so why argue? T-Mobile is not discriminating against your phone because its unlocked. They give you the full pipe just as if it was any other T-Mo phone. They deliver the speed to the SIM, you choose the device. As long as the SIM isn't faulty and your APN's are fine (default should be OK), you're getting max speed for you device/area.
Thank you for your response. I apologize, I must not have seen your response in the other thread. I understand buying unlocked means you deal with it yourself, I came from the Google store unbranded N1. The only reason I stopped in the store was to replace my SIM card, in case it was faulty. I just decided to ask her about it and she more or less was just trying to sell me the One S instead of answering my questions.
Anyway, I called technical support and was lucky enough to land a rep who I could barely understand *shrugs*. Out of the 12 minute call I only understood that I won't get 4G because its not a T-Mobile phone and my account was not updated to reflect the new phone (IMEI) and with that change I should expect better network performance.

So I have a play store Gnex running Xenon HD I cant seem to get decent speeds. Coverage is spotty around here in Myrtle Beach, but sitting in the same place in my house with the same number of bars showing yields very different results. Sometimes its up to 5mbps down sometimes its 200k down. What has your experience been with GSM version Gnex and data speed? List off your carrier and location. Ive attached my best speed with T-Mobile

I'm in the UK and use Virgin Mobile, i don't get anything above 1.8mbit anywhere
Just north of you, here in Wilmington, NC, I average around ~6Mbps down and ~1Mbps up on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network. There is always variance, although I'd say the connection is pretty stable. I'm totally happy with the GNex's network performance; although my vision might be a bit clouded as I just jumped ship from Sprint. I was getting a choppy/sporadic 100kbps down and 200kbps up on the best of days with Sprint 3G! My data speeds/reliability on the GNex puts that to shame....even when I'm forced to use T-Mobile's Edge network.

I've really been trying to give sprint a chance, but, this week, I bought a GNex and decided to give the TMo Monthly 4G a try. I haven't canceled my Sprint plan yet, although it's only $90 at this point (contract is almost up!!!). I've been blown away by the data speeds. I just pulled 8.2Mbps down and 2.09Mbps up. This is probably 20x faster than I'm getting with sprint. Safe to say this is a good deal. I'm probably going to cancel Sprint this week and pony up the $90, but I'm also going to have change from the $30 plan on TMo to the $60. I need more than 100 minutes, and the VOIP methods aren't too reliable yet, from what I gather.
Im in NYC. This phone gets the same exact speeds as my sgs2 which is a 42mbps device. Average 10-13 down, and 1 up.

Same situation here. Thankfully, I can get by with the 100mins/mo since additional minutes are only $0.10ea. I've never used 400min/mo, so the $30 plan works for me.
Glad to know T-Mobile works so well in MYR...I go that way pretty regularly, but haven't had a chance to yet since switching over to the GNex. Definitely good to hear! Anything has to be better than Sprint. Their voice coverage and pricing is decent; but I simply cannot handle dial-up speeds!
Having a "GSM data speed" thread is kinda pointless. There are so many different carriers, and even extreme variations within carriers, that just make it useless.

I am on Straihg Talk AT&T HSPA+. The Att tower is right down the street. I usually get higher than this. But like said above there are a lot of factors at play when it comes to speedtests, so I am not sure how it will relate to your area or carrier.

I'm definitely considering Straight Talk... I just have to gauge how much data I actually use. Coming from Sprint's unlimited, I never worried about it, although at their speeds I couldn't actually do much. i'm in my trial period right now... Straight Talk has made me nervous with their soft data caps. Seems like everyone is confused as to what it is, but I'm definitely going to give it a try once this month is up. I'm going to give them a whirl with both the TMo sim and AT&T sim

Data usage on Straight Talk really depends on your area and how many other ST users there are in that area. I'd say try it out and see how it goes. Worst case scenario is you find out you'll use too much for your area and you gotta go back to T-Mobile. The only "issue" is that ST charges $15 for the SIM (which is also an activation kit effectively), whereas T-Mobile's Monthly 4G SIM + activation kits are like ~$0.99. Gets a little spendy to try out ST AT&T and ST T-Mobile. Worth it if you find out what's best for you though, of course. Just really wish ST would cut you a break on the SIM if you pre-purchase a month of service with it.
Bloomington-Normal Illinois, T-Mobile monthly 4G. I get around 1.7 average down and 1.5 up.
Was just in St. Louis last week. Got around 3 down and 3 up, downtown and around the arch.

What radio are you using? I get about half the download speed I did with my sg2.
On your sprint online account if you look in your detailed bill there's an option to view your statistics which show you how much data you use in nice graphs. Also txts and minutes used. Check it out.

On gnexus, I got about 5mbps average all times a day here in Colorado.

Have a pixel 2 xl unlocked from the Google store, pulled my VZW prepaid sim card from a 3 year old htc one m9 and popped it in. The pixel's connectivity is very sporadic with data connection speed, going all the way to 15-50kb download and upload speed sometimes this is on the VZW network, not WiFi. Sitting in the same spot with a 3 year old htc, the network runs about 30mb down and fluctuates around 10mb up.
Is anyone else having this problem? It makes no sense to me. Wasn't sure if maybe a new sim card is in order, but it does sometimes get up to 30mb max, but seems to run slow most of the time.

Same here, it's one issue after another. This device is riddled with issues but I am not going to RMA, I am going to wait for the first update and see what comes of it. Here's to hoping Google gets their ish together.
Ironically my wifes smaller pixel 2 is much faster internet and gets much better reception. She can watch full HD video while I have absolutely no service in the mountains. We are both on Tmobile. Makes no sense.

Maybe it's a bug in the modem baseband? Is it present on those running 8.1 dp1? I see this randomly on mine as well using 8.0.
Add the IMEI to the VZW BYOD site. Might be a registration issue.
I have project fi just switch from Sprint even tho they use Sprint network and t mobile. I installed fi switch to change to t mobile to test speeds. Sprint had more signal but I was only getting about 3Mbs. T mobile with less signal 12Mbs. Both were on LTE.

My network speed is good. I use to have trouble getting reception with a s8+. My pixel xl2 has no problems and I never have a loss or slow speeds.
Wanted to throw an update out here - I got back in town today and popped in at the VZW store. They gave me a new SIM card and reset everything on the account. No changes. Then the guy told me where I work gets a hefty discount on phone plans, and the 5gb plan on contract was actually cheaper than the 3gb prepaid plan I have had for the past 3ish years. I switched to a regular subscription account and magically my bandwidth peaks doubled, and it seems to be running steady.
I'm going back out of state in 48 hours and will see if the sporadic coverage issues have been resolved too. I really hope so, because that was going to kill the deal and I wanted to like this phone so much... If the connection is still dying out, I'm just going to go back to the 3 year old phone and wait for the U11+, begrudgingly.
I'm having some serious issues with D/L speeds on Sprint. I can have very good signal, sitting still, and so long as it is on LTE band 25 or 26, I might get 1 mbps down. Should I find myself in a spot where I'm connected to band 41, I get at least 10 mbps down. Tried a new sim card, factory reset, etc. Currently have a ticket "escalated" with Sprint support, but we'll see where that goes.
Part of this issue might be a result of leaving sprint and going to project fi, only to go back to sprint when they offered a $150 credit. Prior to those changes, I had consistent speeds over 10 mpbs regardless of the lte band. This is looking less like a phone issue, and more of a sprint issue, but regardless, it's getting kind of annoying.

Yeah, it's like the carriers themselves may be involved in this one.
Either way, I'm sending this piece of garbage back for a refund in a few days. This isn't even good quality for a $500 phone, much less a near $1,000 phone.
Verizon is even giving 50% off now for some phone trade ins, up from $300. Think this design will have to be completely redone again next year. They should've just went with the HTC.
