So, I might of been quite tired and not concentrated when this happened...
But, I was removing my SIM when I realised that I was actually inserting the SIM opening tool into the tiny hole in the top left not the top right. Does anyone know what this hole is exactly for?
I was thinking it was either a microphone (wrong end of phone?) or some sort of water damage detection hole?
Either way it definitely didn't open my SIM slot

I believe it is another mic for stereo video and background noise cancelling when phoning
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Tapatalk
i personally think its a mic for calls to help when on loud speaker
that would be the secondary microphone for noise cancellation
Thanks for your help guys, I just hope me prodding it with the HTC Sim tool has not broken it haha...
I too wasn't concentrating in the store when they were giving me the sim, i'm pretty sure it's a reset button as the phone restarted when I poked a paperclip in the wrong hole.
I did exactly the same thing yesterday. Wasn't concentrating properly. I pushed it in pretty hard too. Have you noticed any problems since in call quality or video sound?

Noticed that many say the hole is for a microphone. After searching I cannot find that mentioned by HTC anywhere.
However beneath that hole is a push button switch.
I don't what it is for and am willing to try, however recently my phone decided to become a brick, so after that is fixed...... :good:
little hole
its is a mic i damaged my bottom one so i opened my hox to repair and its the very same as the mic i replaced

My First thought too !
And I'm sure at some point most of us have done it. :fingers-crossed:

Hi everyone.
I accidentally dropped my phone as I was getting out of my car (damn that new coat with all it's pockets!).
Now I noticed that at full volume, the speaker is really hard to understand, and at about 1/3 volume it becomes clearer- but the person becomes harder to hear in terms of loudness.
At full volume it's as though the person on the other side is talking with their lips on the mic and really loudly.
Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the speaker, or what could have caused this? I am familiar with taking the phone apart. I've done it a number of times, but I'm just wondering if it even makes sense to try at this point.
thnx
EDIT: I found this.
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/htc-desire-z-earpiece-speaker-replacement.html
anyone install one of these? requires desoldering, I guess?
I dont think it requires anything really besides opening. I believe that when I swapped my spring the speaker is on the back side of the phone and the entire motherboard is seperate on front side.
thanks scott.
you're correct. no soldering. it has two spring-bent type contacts and it looks like there is a metal bracket around the speaker that has 4 indentations to hold the speaker down over 4 small cavities in the speaker body.
should be easy.
and i found it for 2 bucks to boot!
Yea, replacing the speaker is very easy. First take off the back (4 screws) and then I think there is one more screw to get the speaker loose. But I don't remember exactly. Might be none.
All my callers are saying they have any echo when they are on the phone with me. Narrowed it down and it appears to be due to the bottom microphone on the phone. My new case apparently makes it go crazy even though it has a hole for the microphone. My other cases seem to have no problem. It's so weird this case does when it has a hole for the microphone larger than the other case. Anyone got any thoughts other than tossing the case? Could it a microphone problem?
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
So when you make a call without the case on it's fine? If so before just getting rid of the case you should try cutting the hole out bigger or something.
Is it covering the top microphone? This is used for noise and echo cancellation, if you have this enabled in Phone's settings. If it is covering this, try toggle the feature off and see if it improves.
odd problem, had the same issue, with speaker phone and bluetooth.
you know what it was (on my behalf atleast) the SIM, went into the AT&T store and got a new sim issued..
weird.

I have traced the problem down to being the bottom microphone on the phone. I did this by covering the bottom one with the case off and it produced the echo on the other end of the line. When the case is off, there is no echo. When you put it back on it is back.
The hole in my case is pretty big for both microphones. I don't see what making the holes bigger will do. It really has me stumped. I did research on the web and it turns out this is pretty common in Galaxy phones. However, there is no good solution.
Some folks just stop using cases. Others got a new sim as you alluded to. Others it started working better. And some just returned their phone.
On the SIM card issue, did it matter if you had a case on your phone or not when you had an echo? Since mine is related to the case and microphone, I wonder if the SIM would have any affect?

it would be worse if i put the person on speaker phone.. so i dont know how it could be the sim, (with or without a case) but it worked better with new sim.
possible fix for echo problem
This may be worth a try to fix your echo problem. Open her up and pad the mic.

My galaxy note 3 mic doesn't work when I try to talk on a call or using Google now. It does work when I record a video so I am wondering if there is multiple mics and what mic would I need to replace for talking on my phone.
Thanks!

Have you contacted Samsung support? If a mic is not working it sounds like a hardware defect.
Same problem - How I resolved it
Sorry for bumping a kind of old post, but anyway...
I had the same problem with the mic not working on my note 3 since the day i bought it, I bought my Note 3 used off Craigslist, and when I got home I realized that the microphone didn't work on calls, but worked just fine on speaker phone. I was somewhat annoyed by this, thinking I got screwed on craigslist again. But instead of throwing a fit about it, I just ordered another charging port / microphone thinking that would solve the problem. I installed it when it arrived, all excited like, only to find out that this didnt fix the problem. I read several posts on this forum and others, many offering what seemed to be viable solutions, disabling noise reduction, cleaning out the mic hole with a pin and so on, none of these worked, the problem still continued.
So tonight I set out on a mission to find the cause of the problem and i did just that... I started by taking my phone apart so that I could clean the mic hole from the inside as well as cleaning the little screen / filter on the inside of the mic hole and stuff like that, I was working in an area that had awkward lighting (my patio), and so I was having to move the phone in different ways so I could see down around the microphone, while doing that I noticed the light glimmering around the area of the mic hole, on the inside, I looked a little closer and I could see that there was definitely something there. I picked at it with my tweezers and what came up, a piece of clear plastic that resembled the plastic you find wrapped around the edges of new electronics, it was about 1/8in wide and 1" long, and it was covering the mic hole.
After removing the plastic, I reassembled my phone and tested it, now the mic works great. it seems that samsung put this thin plastic there to keep things out of the microphone, and it works well, it keeps everything out of the microphone, including the sound of your voice..
Now my Note 3 is what it was supposed to be from the day I bought it, an awesome phone. Prior to tonight its been a regretful purchase and disappointing upgrade to my Note 2, which I had regretted getting rid of, until now...

Hi, thanks for great troubleshooting.
I was hoping you have a picture of the problem area, since I have an issue with my speakerphone. People cannot hear me properly when on speakerphone. I may have to fix the microphone as well on my good old Note 3.
Ok, so i waa trying to repairy Nexus 7 2013, and i opened it up (it was used, so no warrenty in the first place) . I fixed the first problem, but now when italk into my mic, all it catches is static and my voice is so quiet it cant hardly be heard. Wjere is the mic located ao i can try to fix it and how would i fix it? I cant afford the stupid repair shops around here.

Built-in mic is "glued" to one end of the power/volume button strip. Should have a black, rubbery cover on it with a tiny round opening on the side facing outward.

I don't know that there's a hard reset button on this model. If you did prick the thing with a sharp-pointed needle, there's a chance you might have torn the mic's membrane.
Hard reset button is a combination of the power and volume buttons.
Hey everyone.
I bear sad news that my Nexus 5X which I got 2 days ago appears to have a rattle inside.
Its near the top but holding the buttons, the camera glass, fingerprint, speaker grills, and anything else I could think of still doesn't fix it so it seems to be internal.
I've not had a chance to speak to Google or LG about it yet and Carphone Warehouse (UK retailer) weren't any help online. Speaking to them in store tomorrow so fingers crossed they just replace it.
Does anyone else have this issue?
SOLVED! - I spoke to Google support and they said that the rattling noise comes from the sim tray.
There is a tiny lever which you push with the sim pin to remove the sim tray, and that lever is what rattles against the frame. Providing that your 5X works as it should, that's the rattle.
Thanks guys

Most likely the camera optics which are loose when unpowered. Launch the camera app to energise the camera, does it still rattle? If no or needs more shaking then its normal.

No luck still rattles when the camera is on and needs the same amount of shaking
I have this too. I wonder what it is... should I be worried?
Why are u shaking your phone, and why does it bother you.
So I never noticed this but since you said something I shook mine and I have the same thing.
Meh.. Barely noticeable even when trying to make it happen

I noticed there was a rattling sound when the vibration motor goes off, so I shook it a little to see if anything was lose and now I can't stop hearing it with every notification.
It's not usually something that would bother me but now I know its internal it will

Mine rattles too if I shake it, so have other phones, it's common, first search gave me this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713803
It depends on how the optics are driven for focusing so the rattle could remain, it could be the vibration motor which is a circular motor by the looks of the teardown, so it might free spin when the phone is shaken.
Every smartphone I have ever owned, when I've visited the forums here there are people complaining about rattles when they shake the phone. There are lose parts in these phones as often things need to move freely, i.e. buttons, camera optics, and vibration motors, everything else is so tightly packed in it can not rattle. The only other rattle you might get is a broken off component, and the chances the phone still works with a detached resistor or chip is unlikely, plus you'd hear that moving around.
Honestly it is nothing to worry about. Google "phone rattles" and be assured it's normal.
Regards
Phil

So did they offer to exchange it or no? It's very annoying tbh once you notice it.
