Echo problem - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

All my callers are saying they have any echo when they are on the phone with me. Narrowed it down and it appears to be due to the bottom microphone on the phone. My new case apparently makes it go crazy even though it has a hole for the microphone. My other cases seem to have no problem. It's so weird this case does when it has a hole for the microphone larger than the other case. Anyone got any thoughts other than tossing the case? Could it a microphone problem?

So when you make a call without the case on it's fine? If so before just getting rid of the case you should try cutting the hole out bigger or something.

Is it covering the top microphone? This is used for noise and echo cancellation, if you have this enabled in Phone's settings. If it is covering this, try toggle the feature off and see if it improves.

odd problem, had the same issue, with speaker phone and bluetooth.
you know what it was (on my behalf atleast) the SIM, went into the AT&T store and got a new sim issued..
weird.

I have traced the problem down to being the bottom microphone on the phone. I did this by covering the bottom one with the case off and it produced the echo on the other end of the line. When the case is off, there is no echo. When you put it back on it is back.
The hole in my case is pretty big for both microphones. I don't see what making the holes bigger will do. It really has me stumped. I did research on the web and it turns out this is pretty common in Galaxy phones. However, there is no good solution.
Some folks just stop using cases. Others got a new sim as you alluded to. Others it started working better. And some just returned their phone.
On the SIM card issue, did it matter if you had a case on your phone or not when you had an echo? Since mine is related to the case and microphone, I wonder if the SIM would have any affect?

it would be worse if i put the person on speaker phone.. so i dont know how it could be the sim, (with or without a case) but it worked better with new sim.

possible fix for echo problem
This may be worth a try to fix your echo problem. Open her up and pad the mic.

TPU Gel Cases - Echo problem

Hello
I ordered 2 tpu gel cases from ebay and now i have aserious echo problem, the other side can here himself speaking.
If i could post links out side of this site (i'm anew user here), you could see the cases that i taking about.
Do you know this problem?
Could you suggest me how to resolve it? maybe to cut more space for the mic or something like that...
thnks
Anyone?
Anyone?
Do i the only one who have this problem?
when i remove the case, the echo gone.
but i need the case..
I have a TPU-case but not such problem. Mayne yuo could make the holes bigger...
There's a small hole on the top near the earphone jack for the noise-cancelling mic; maybe the TPU case is covering it. You could try peeling back the edge of the TPU case near the jack so as to expose the mic.
If that makes a difference, you could punch a small hole in the case to accommodate the noise-cancelling mic. You could use a small plastic or metal tube -- maybe the end of a ballpoint pen's ink reservoir -- as a punch.
Echo problem as well here
Hello, I have the same problem with my SGSII. Just got it yesterday. But here I have the problem with or without the TPU case. My TPU case has a small hole near the headphones jack.
Any ideas? And is your problem solved?
EDIT: Tried also speakerphone, then it is all normal. Speakerphone uses the mic on top near the headphone jack, I just found out. It looks like a faulty mic to me (or covered with something).
EDIT 2: Fixed, although people say that with my previous phone the quality was better. Reset to factory defaults did the trick for me. It seems that the firmware update the other day (used Kies) had messed something up, that is my guess.
New device
Well, I kept holding the problem. Yesterday in the morning all was fine, in the noon people kept telling they hear me with bad quality and an echo. I went back to the store, explained the situation, they gave me a new device. I can clearly see the difference in the microphone hole .. the first phone it was closed, here it is more open. Problem should be solved now, I hope. I can say that I tested the quality myself and I can hear the difference. The sound of voice is more clear and louder.
Same problem recently started with mine. Gel case and upgrade with KE7 around the same time. Now everyone that calls complains of echo. Case off to test that when i get home from work. Hopefully update tonight.

I have the same problem with my galaxy s ii
I have the same problem, with tpu case.
Hello,
I have the same problem with case, when I remove it everything become normal.
How did you solve the problem? Please share your experiences.
I have exactly the same problem. I was first using one of the TPU cases with a small hole on the top. As people on the other side was heavily complaining of echo I replaced it with one which is completely open on the top and on the bottom like this. It is actually a very nice case, but I realized that the problem is less evident but it is still there...!
Even if it not obstructing at all any of the microphone/speaker holes, if I raise the call volume I tested without any doubt that a (low but present) echo can be heard on the other side. The echo completely disappear if I remove the case
Actually what really makes me wonder is how this can happen, and I will really appreciate any suggestion...

Phone case causes echo

Its been a while since someones posted about this, its not like this is brand new but id like to see if i could get help bringing resolution to this. Ppl who call me or who i call hear themselves echoing like mad, speakerphone seems to stop it, but the only way to make it go away on the handset is to remove the phones case.
Its said the noise reduction feature is the cause, but I found that to not be the case. Its only happened since flashing racings ICS. Has anyone found any work arounds? I've searched and came up empty
so there was no problems with other ROMs?
if not then it's not the phone, i've read up on couple instances that it was the phone's fault.
Have you tried making a fresh wipe? Maybe that will help some things.
Remember when you put it on speakerphone.. the microphone is on the TOP of the phone, so the handset mic and the speakphone mic are completely different. maybe fiddle around with the case on the bottom where the mic is and see if that fixes it.
No one reported any issues to me with any other rom, may have to try wiping a few things. Either that or take an exacto knife to my case
Edit: exacto knife didn't work

Tiny Hole On Top Left of Phone?

So, I might of been quite tired and not concentrated when this happened...
But, I was removing my SIM when I realised that I was actually inserting the SIM opening tool into the tiny hole in the top left not the top right. Does anyone know what this hole is exactly for?
I was thinking it was either a microphone (wrong end of phone?) or some sort of water damage detection hole?
Either way it definitely didn't open my SIM slot

I believe it is another mic for stereo video and background noise cancelling when phoning
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Tapatalk
i personally think its a mic for calls to help when on loud speaker
that would be the secondary microphone for noise cancellation
Thanks for your help guys, I just hope me prodding it with the HTC Sim tool has not broken it haha...
I too wasn't concentrating in the store when they were giving me the sim, i'm pretty sure it's a reset button as the phone restarted when I poked a paperclip in the wrong hole.
I did exactly the same thing yesterday. Wasn't concentrating properly. I pushed it in pretty hard too. Have you noticed any problems since in call quality or video sound?

Noticed that many say the hole is for a microphone. After searching I cannot find that mentioned by HTC anywhere.
However beneath that hole is a push button switch.
I don't what it is for and am willing to try, however recently my phone decided to become a brick, so after that is fixed...... :good:
little hole
its is a mic i damaged my bottom one so i opened my hox to repair and its the very same as the mic i replaced

Galaxy Note 3 Mic issues

My galaxy note 3 mic doesn't work when I try to talk on a call or using Google now. It does work when I record a video so I am wondering if there is multiple mics and what mic would I need to replace for talking on my phone.
Thanks!

Have you contacted Samsung support? If a mic is not working it sounds like a hardware defect.
Same problem - How I resolved it
Sorry for bumping a kind of old post, but anyway...
I had the same problem with the mic not working on my note 3 since the day i bought it, I bought my Note 3 used off Craigslist, and when I got home I realized that the microphone didn't work on calls, but worked just fine on speaker phone. I was somewhat annoyed by this, thinking I got screwed on craigslist again. But instead of throwing a fit about it, I just ordered another charging port / microphone thinking that would solve the problem. I installed it when it arrived, all excited like, only to find out that this didnt fix the problem. I read several posts on this forum and others, many offering what seemed to be viable solutions, disabling noise reduction, cleaning out the mic hole with a pin and so on, none of these worked, the problem still continued.
So tonight I set out on a mission to find the cause of the problem and i did just that... I started by taking my phone apart so that I could clean the mic hole from the inside as well as cleaning the little screen / filter on the inside of the mic hole and stuff like that, I was working in an area that had awkward lighting (my patio), and so I was having to move the phone in different ways so I could see down around the microphone, while doing that I noticed the light glimmering around the area of the mic hole, on the inside, I looked a little closer and I could see that there was definitely something there. I picked at it with my tweezers and what came up, a piece of clear plastic that resembled the plastic you find wrapped around the edges of new electronics, it was about 1/8in wide and 1" long, and it was covering the mic hole.
After removing the plastic, I reassembled my phone and tested it, now the mic works great. it seems that samsung put this thin plastic there to keep things out of the microphone, and it works well, it keeps everything out of the microphone, including the sound of your voice..
Now my Note 3 is what it was supposed to be from the day I bought it, an awesome phone. Prior to tonight its been a regretful purchase and disappointing upgrade to my Note 2, which I had regretted getting rid of, until now...

Hi, thanks for great troubleshooting.
I was hoping you have a picture of the problem area, since I have an issue with my speakerphone. People cannot hear me properly when on speakerphone. I may have to fix the microphone as well on my good old Note 3.

Samsung S9 echo problems after battery replacement

Hi
I just replaced the battery on my Samsung Galaxy S9 phone. After the battery replacement people calling me (regular phone calls) complaints about hearing an echo of their selves. I'm able to fix this by removing the back glass cover (the one that is glued on) but as soon as I put the back glass cover back people calling me hear them selves again. So I'm not sure if I have broken anything on the back cover itself when I replaced the battery or if I have broken anything related to the speaker or mic here? If I put people on speaker there is no echo, and if I use bluetooth headset everything is working fine as well.
I'm guessing this is hardware related so the question is which hardware component I should replace here?
Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Seems some kind of crosstalk related to mic or antenna. You shouldn't have reapired by yourself.
So a replacement of the antenna and charging coil module could potentially fix this? If so I think that is a bit odd since both wireless charging and antenna coverage seems to be OK. Also, as I've mentioned there are no echo if I remove the back cover.

rather presumptuous of you to say that they shouldnt have repaired it themselves.

many of the mics ive seen while doing the many repairs ive done have little rubber footings or adhesive foam rubber isolation material around or on them, did you get all of the stuff put back where its supposed to go?
I took another look at the rubber footing of the mic that you mentioned. I also noticed the little "rubber net thing" on right hand side of the mic seems a bit melted - not sure if this could play any part?
Again, what is really puzzling is that the error occurs only after I've firmly put some pressure on the back cover after mounting it (so that it is glued back on). If I loosely put it on people don't hear the echo of them selves.
Any idea?
ps. I've got some pictures of the inside of the phone but since I'm new to this forum I'm not able to post pictures yet. Please let me know if there are any other methods of sharing the photos and I'll be glad to share.
