I received a DHD today and am terribly excited as this is my first smart phone!! I do have one problem though:
When playing videos on say, the BBC iPlayer website, the right part of the video has about half a centimetre of artifacts down the side. Like that part of the video is covered by smoked glass (best way I can describe it). Every video on that site is the same.
Youtube is picture perfect however. Additionally, when I use the iPlayer app or view 4OD videos on the website (in HQ) there is no artifacting on the right of the video, but instead, on the bottom (about 2mm wide).
It's consistent and happens with all the videos on those sites. No where else have I seen this problem mentioned online, which is really frustrating because I feel like the phone is perfect in every other way! I have updated to Flash 10.2 and tried different web browsers, the problem is the same in each.
I'd just like to get the video on iPlayer et al working as well as the videos on YouTube. I hope that's reasonable.
Thank you for taking the time to read this!
i'd have to double check, but im 99% sure i've had the same.
I guess it's flash, but who knows
It's really quite weird, as though it occurs in Flash 10.1 and 10.2, it seems to happen on the stock DHD browser and also the Dolphin browser. And it happens in slightly different ways whether the item is differing quality. But Youtube Flash video is absolutely perfect in all viewing options.
My DHD has come from Vodafone if that means anything!
It's a little disappointing as one would expect them to have worked out the obvious visual kinks before releasing the software! Especially as the DHD has such a cinematic display and the BBC iPlayer/Flash video is such an attractive selling point. The DHD is otherwise great to consume media on.
I'd hate to send the phone back and have the same problem with a new handset. Especially as I'm really attached to this little phone now! =)
A minor update to my saga of finickyness!
Both Dolphin and Miren browsers have the same rendering issue on BBC iPlayer (I suppose because they use the stock browser to render thingies).
Skyfire also seems to play the iPlayer videos with the minor artifact at the bottom, when in default mode and the artifacts on the right when in 'android' mode. Further research is commencing. I suppose it must be a Flash problem, but if it is, I'm surprised that no one else seems to have noticed this issue.
If any artifacts appear, your DHD most likely has a hardware issue.
I'm popping to Vodafone (later) today to see if any of the Vodafone handsets have a similar issue. Luckily I am within the 7 day period, so I can get a replacement if it's faulty.
It's a shame if it's a hardware issue. I can't fix that. =(
I solved the problem! Am posting for lawrence750 and any future users who happen upon this thread. It seems that installing Flash 10.2 and then uninstalling it fixed the issue entirely. Reinstalling Flash 10.2 causes the issue to return. I'm sticking with 10.1 until Adobe can get their act together!
Its strange that I actually originally upgraded to 10.2 on order to fix the problem in the first place, but since downgrading the videos are now picture perfect. =D
thnx for the info.will help many.
Hopefully the powers that be don't do a DMCA takedown on my youtube video, but I've uploaded an example of a video playback glitch that regularly occurs on my device. Does anyone else see this on their Note 10.1 2014 edition? Very annoying... SM-P600, 32GB, USA version, MK1 firmware. Not rooted.

So far, I must be in the less than 1% that have experienced this problem...
you didn't include any info on the clip. audio codec, video codec, bitrate, profile, etc. what videomplayer are you using. is the glitch repeatable at that exact frame each time?
You can be sure that when somebody else had such problems, you will already find it here in the forum. So, no, never have such an issue. Also not over the network.
And, as mad squabbles already wrote: For more we need much more information.

The movie was downloaded from Samsung Hub to the device. HD quality. The videoplayer was the only one that plays these movies (to my knowledge): The stock Samsung video player. The glitch is not repeatable at exact locations. I can go back and rewatch the same clip and it will not appear, which says to me that there is not a data corruption problem. It seems like an I/O or "interrupt" problem to me. I've run Androbench on the device and I get as good as or better than the Anandtech benchmarks for the device.
This type of glitch occurs on any kind of move I play, including those I put on the device (mp4, etc). For the ones I have put on the device manually (not through Google Play or the Hub), I've tried the following players: Dice, MX, Archos, and the stock player.
In all other respects, the device works flawlessly: no lag to speak of (except for the occasional stutter on the notifications pull-down, which seems to be the norm). It doesn't crash randomly and battery life seems normal (no less than 7-10 hours of screen on time, ~4% drain overnight. The only thing that I have that probably isn't too common is that I do have MDM software installed (MaaS360) so that I can sync with my employers Exchange servers using TouchDown.

Normally I would expect that you have an background process which got more attention from Android then your video player. This can be anything. Did you have this issue also after a directly after a restart?

Yes, I have the issue immediately after a restart.

I just removed MaaS360 and rebooted. The glitch remains...
Factory resetting now. Will report back when I get it back online. I'll test video before installing any third party apps...
And.....it's still glitching after a factory reset.
First thing I noticed was that this scene is similar to super Mario live action movie
Second, this glitch can happen when you read from a slow SD card or can be reading and writing at same time, for example downloading from torrent or installing apps and playback movies from same location.

Indeed. However, movies are playing from the internal memory without any other significant activity going on. (no D/Ls, etc. just normal device behavior that is native to the OS) going on in the background. I also have played video in airplane mode...

and the media scan which have issues with scanning some files. Maybe you check which processes are running in the background?

There is always *some* process running in the background... I have cleared all other applications while playing a movie, but really, should this be necessary? (Problem still remains) I've tried playing movies without any non-stock apps installed. Problem occurs. I've tried freezing as much bloatware as possible without rooting before installing third part apps. Problem occurs.
What I would like to explicitly know is this: has anyone rented a movie from Google Play, played at least 30 minutes straight while doing nothing but watching the movie, and saw any stuttering whatsoever during that 30 minutes. I can live with it if it is a suboptimal experience due to firmware (I'm on MK1, btw) if this is "normal" for this device. I could only hope that it would be fixed in a future firmware update if that was the case. However, I have a strong feeling that if I sent this in to Samsung, they'll fiddle with it for 10 minutes, see that it "seems" to be fine (except for this glitch, the device performs completely as-expected for an Android device), then it be returned to me with no action taken. I can live without this thing for a few weeks, but it will be extremely annoying if nothing is actually done about it. Given that this glitch is not reproducible on command, I fear it will be an ongoing thorn in my proverbial behind. Unfortunately, my return window has expired or else it would go back in an instant.
Used Kies to download and reinstall the MK1 firmware in case one of the OTA updates were corrupted. No joy. Still stutters. Samsung Live Chat help of no use. I expect a call or email from them telling me to send it in in the next 3-5 business days unless someone else states that they have the same tablet and sees this problem too, possibly confirming that it is a firmware/device combination issue.
Mmm this is weird, I have no problem with video playback (any supported format by this device)
I have no MK1 but MJ2 and maybe media scanner is working hard in background
Are you using external SD card and / or have many pictures?

Try MX player if you just want to play it somehow
Sent from my GT-I9082
as far as i can remember with pc's.... if video card gets warm or hot, the screen starts to show glitches...

MX player shows glitches as well on movies that it can actually play. i.e., MX player doesn't play nicely with rented (digitally rights managed) movies from Google, which is the primary problem. Perhaps Android tablet users just don't rent movies all that much?

Media scanner isn't working hard in the background as far as I can tell. No to the two questions.
I'm having this really weird issue with these two apps for a while. Basically I would keep getting connection error in the Play store or on Youtube every few minutes or so, then I would retry and everything would be back to normal. Odd thing is that I can have a browser open in a side window and go to google or any other website just fine while this issue happens. I'm not sure if there's more google apps affected. Hell one time it was so bad that Youtube refused to load for a good minute or so, I opened a pen window for the browser, loaded up the same youtube video in there and it started playing before the app even loaded it (kept giving me connection error).
I have Adblock Plus running in the background so I wonder if that's what's doing this..but it seems odd for it to affect these apps.
Any ideas to fix this?

I don't have Adblock but I have issues with YouTube App aswell. It works most of the time flawlessly but sometimes like you it seems to take to long to load so what I do is close the app fully then launch it again and it works fine, I also had another weird issue of whenever I played a video in full screen and changed the tablets orientation it would dim the brightness to 0% (even changing the screens brightness to 100% wouldn't cause the app to brighten up) and hoy a "small weird box with what looked like signal bars next to it", this hasn't happened the last few times I used the tablet but its just bizarre so deffo something is up with the App that's for sure.
Hello! I am having a really annoying problem with youtube (the website m.youtube.com not the app) on my Nexus 7 2013. Basically, the problem is that it takes FOREVER to load a video. Now, I may not have the fastest internet connection in the world (far from it actually), but I can easily load a 720p video on my laptop in 5 - 7 seconds. Now on my nexus 7, the EXACT same video at 720p takes 23 - 24 seconds to load! I could turn off hd and cut about half off of that time, but then it looks like a mosaic of pixels -_- I really don't get this, as mobile youtube was always way faster than on the desktop for me. However, ever since they updated the UI (to look more like the desktop) it is so slow. I love youtube and watch it every day, so this is a big problem for me. If someone could help me, I would be really grateful! Thanks!

Same, happens on my Nexus 7 but not on my Note 3 even though they run on the same WiFi network.
I am not sure what is causing this
I'm lucky if I can watch a video that doesn't 1: stutter or buffer 2: lockup part way through the video and 3: lockup my N7.
Sometimes clearing the cache in the app helps but most of the time it doesn't.

I know right? Don't even get me started on trying to rewind or fast forward...it sometimes crashes my tablet so bad I have to hard reset. I wonder if it has something to do with flash? On my old kindle fire with a custom ROM and flash I have no problems. N7 doesn't have flash. Wonder if there is a relationship.
Just use the Viral app instead if YouTube! It loads real 720p faster than the sub par HD option in the original app. It also has allot of other improvements like background playback and popup play.
It never crashes for me, but buffers a lot. None of the other devices (Asus tablet, laptop, mobile) have this problem.
Just recently realized an issue with in-app stories, certain ones that are playing a video instead of just text aren't actually playing one, it's just stuck, the bar doesn't move. I've noticed this with Zenly app when I launched it today, since it is shutdown, they have a two-slide "stories" showing and the first one doesn't play, the second one does. It also happens with some of the other apps if they have a video playing in those stories, for example in my country there's one for a food chain and a mobile telecommunication app (Tele2). Tested them on other phones and had no issues. Internet connection is stable so it looks like either a firmware issue or maybe certain apps just aren't optimized for Android 13 that well? Can anyone test for example if the first slide on Zenly app plays or if it's just an issue on my end.
