I hate to admit it, but my Nexus is a little laggy

I have a live wallpaper on, but it still shouldnt be that laggy. My sensation could handle a lot that was thrown at it without being all that laggy. Even with live wallpaper off it's a little laggy. Keyboard in landscape mode? Laggy. Swipe from one home screen to another? Laggy.
Any fix for this!? I just can't wait until CM9 now to fix all this stuff!

I don't know man. I came from a Sensation (running CyanogenMod 7) and the Nexus blows it out of the water in terms of speed and smoothness...and the Sensation was pretty ****in' fast running stock Android.

Well I still think my Nexus is better. I love it to death! But the sudden lag kind of kills it. I don't know what the deal is either.

I too noticed some laggyness to begin with the Live Wallpaper turned on. Sounds like your last phone was an iPhone 4?
I've been playing around with settings and have a few concepts on what might be going on:
1. First of all, under: Settings > Developer Options, there is a setting called "force GPU rendering". I haven't tried this with the Live Wallpaper on yet, but perhaps this might help the 2D UI laggyness? Let me know what you find.
2. Disable your Live Wallpaper, I did, it saved battery life and things are much snappier.
3. Close your unused apps. I know ICS is meant to deal with old apps much better now, however, I find my Galaxy Nexus to be snappier when I close down the 30 odd applications I have left in a suspended state. It doesn't take long to swipe them off from the home screen using the right "Application" touch button down the right hand corner of the screen.
4. I've noticed that dragging my finger along the screen does not give the same smooth/matte feeling of the iPhone 4. As a matter of fact, it almost jitters/vibrates across the contour glass. If I touch with a less contact force, I tend to find the performance of touch screen to be smooth, rather when I apply more force it tends to jump across the surface of the screen creating a jagged touch slide. I've also noticed the higher sensitivity of the accelerometer. If you have a very steady hand you can see the extra performance, if you hand is un-steady, it almost looks worse than the previous phone, but in reality, it was simply my inability to hold the device in one spot that gave the poor performance, really this a reflection on how responsive the phone is to my dodgy movements.

please don't go around suggesting people to do this. They are developer options for a reason.
Force GPU Rendering is only likely to introduce bugs as some apps don't handle it well. Wait for the developers themselves to enable GPU rendering. In addition, GPU rendering adds extra memory overhead to the app (8MB vs 2MB).
By suggesting this, you only end up with people who post back at the forum complaining that App X or App Y no longer works.

This doesn't "close" anything. It just removed the application from your app switching list. FYI.

Im running an Unlocked version on tmobile. Its very laggy. It takes 2 seconds for screen to rotate to landscape and back, and overall its just slow. Even the data keeps fading from hspa to 3g Im beginning to fall in love with its for its beauty but performance wise my galaxy s2 was way faster and smoother. Is an update going to address this? Any input would be appreciated.

The rotation delay is intentional.

I'm experiencing the same thing you are but the delay is intentional. If my screen was rotating all the time I would get really annoyed!

Also, the switching between 3G and 4G is intentional. 3G uses less battery... it kicks over to 4G when you're actually using the data connection.
My galaxy nexus is almost perfectly responsive. It lags on occasion, but I find it to be much smoother and more responsive overall than just about any other android device I've used. (including the galaxy S II)

If your phone is laggy, then it's probably something on it you're running that isn't optimized for ICS. My phone runs just fine and easily outclasses any other phone I've used (and I've used pretty much every high end gsm phone that has come out here in the states). FYI your data isn't "fading from hspa to 3g", the phone idles on UMTS and when it's transmitting data it goes to hspa. This is very normal. Do a search on it if you want to know more.

Wow, we are really going to miss that 6 MB with the 1 GB available to the GN. My last phone was an Xperia X10 with only 384 MB of RAM, yes it was chuggy, but comparatively this amount of allocation is small and the feature seems to work well thsu far. I hardly think they are going to miss it, but your point on the Development Settings is valid to a certain degree.

I would rebut this by saying that most of my paid apps either don't work at all or don't work correctly due to the fact I'm running Ice Cream Sandwich prior to turning this option on on my own phone. There are many other reasons that apps are going to fail, particularly on Android. In retrospect, a disclaimer to this effect might have been appropriate considering the ramifications of the advice, and I direct this at hung monkey:
If you are not smart enough to draw the correlation between enabling the 2D acceleration and most of your apps suddenly not working, then you should probably not turn it on.
I have turned it on, it fixed the laggyness of the default Live Wallpaper, I haven't tested how much it saps the battery yet. Turning it on has only resulted in an improvement to my phone thus far.

From what I read about your "laggy" screen rotate. That is intended so it doesn't accidentally change orientations.

Don't be so sure that it doesn't. For example, if I load a relatively heavy game in to memory, such as Pocket Legends or NFS Shift, and I multitask, the app is suspended. I can use the app selection menu to resume that app, and quite quickly I might ad, much faster than the time it takes for the game to load in memory.
If I then kill it with the Task Switcher, it then has to load from the start, like the suspended session was terminated when I removed it from this list. Even Google themselves said that if you like to manage your apps, then this is how you can end them, but ICS will do a good job of managing it for you anyway, the controls are there if you want them.
This behavior does not match your allegation, would you please care to shed some light?

I concur with the Op - the phone by comparison with my Samsung Galaxy S2, it does seem a bit laggy when scrolling between screens - I have everything setup exactly the same way as on the SGS2.
I'm not technical but I can only hope that these reasons of laggyness come down to the apps,etc. haven't been optimised for ICS yet?
When scrolling up and down the twitter, facebook or google reader apps, it just isnt as smooth as the Galaxy S2 or even the Galaxy S1.
Otherwise, very beautiful UI.

Live wallpapers need to die a horrible death. Worst Android feature ever.
To the OP, use a normal wallpaper instead and you'll see an improvement in the overall speed of the UI.

I agree! This phone lags really bad with all the live wallpapers except for the Phase Beam one. TURN THEM OFF and its by far the smoothest phone.....lol

I use wp clock and havent noticed any lag versus having it off....

Well, I've had my phone for a little over a week and I'm realizing lag when scrolling in the app drawer. its not extremely laggy, but its just not super smooth. When I also text really fast it also lags which is really hard to type. I turned of auto correction I think it fixed the problem, but I'm not 100%. Anyone of you experiencing this?
Oh forgot to mention do you guys hear static when you have the volume really high?

I don't have this issue but I am also using the force gpu rendering option. Everything is smooth and fast.

What lag? Haven't seen lag since day one of having the phone. Doesn't matter what ROM or on stock. Smoothest Android experience yet.

Ive had the completely opposite experience... I too experience "lag" when typing, choppy scrolling, slow opening / running apps, etc... OP, I have the same issues as you do. Please advise if you were able to fix them and if so, what steps did you use?

I dont have lag when typing in text. But many people have complained about stuttering in the app drawer.
But i use handcent since day 1 for texts...

Well, I was able to fix lag while texting by disabling auto correction in the settings. it seems many people are having that issue, but my phone is pretty fast opening and closing programs.

Yeah, if i scroll really fast during the app drawer i notice lag, a little choppy lag, for most people many might not notice it. But I do, i think because i'm so used to my 120hz monitor when I used a 60hz monitor I notice just by moving around a window. I might be picky, but there is lag without a doubt in this phone or atleast my phone.

i already did it. i don't notice an improvement.

Different roms behave differently. Mine was pretty smooth but I've noticed lag on APW scrollable Widgets and flicking through the XDA on several roms. 4.0.3 helped but didn't fix.
Now I'm running Axi0m rom now which is 4.0.4 and there is no lag anymore. Much faster. I'm not over clocking or anything outside of the stock settings for that rom.
So I don't know if its 4.0.4 or the kernel/rom combination, but its a welcome addition. It uses Franco's kernel so maybe it was fixed there?
I DONT have Force 2D enabled either. FYI. Realistic answer.

+1 I own LTE Nexus I have been suggested to flash stock then root again.. i'm backing up my data right now so thank god I am not the only one...

Don't listen to people telling to "Force GPU rendering", they don't know what they're talking about (Launcher2 already uses GPU rendering).
The slight stuttering when scrolling the app drawer is a known bug, reportedly fixed in firmware > 4.0.2 and it also didn't seem to happen in 4.0.1.

Wth is with ppl saying to force gpu rendering, it only works in apps that don't make use of gpu rendering.
The UI in ICS is rendered completely by the gpu so checking/unchecking that option does NOTHING to the UI.
That myth needed to be put to bed.

You guys seem to know your game so how come it still lags in 4.0.3?
for some weaird reason it seems to be stable for me right now... I did check force gpu and 4.0.4 since it's unoffical there isnt any real fast roms for 4.0.4 thanks guys!

The first thing I do after a fresh ROM flash is change the animation scales to 0 in Settings>Development>window+transition animations. I also disable app drawer in/out animations in my launcher settings. The stock ICS animations are fairly obnoxious and much more pronounced than the GB animations. I do the same on my I9100 on CM9. Look at it this way, animations are wasted time, if they're a little over the top then it's more wasted time + more work. My GN is as smooth as my I9100 throughout its life; stock, modded stock, CM7, and CM9.

If you go to nexus s forums you will see that a guy did benchmarks on all the roms available andstock 4.0.4 was the fastest, in fact the top 5 has 4 4.0.4 based roms.
give it a try and see how it is.

dont really want to give up all the AOKP options they are just amazing. I guess I will listen to the other guy and disable all animations and see if it looks better and wait for 4.0.4 rom

4.04 is just too stock for me right now.

I actually like it animations off.
So I am guessing we all are seeing delays in animations which look like lag? it so so much smoother right now. Will report later on.

DroidTheory's Axi0m CrossBreef rom is based on 4.0.4 leak but has all the functionality of AOKP M4 (merged).

[Q] Is it finally time to upgrade? EVERYTHING seems so slow...

I was hoping to get maybe a little longer out of my gnex, considering that IMO i dont do very taxing things, and when i bought it - those things seemed to work fine.
In the past few months, i started using google music - and the phone is simply too slow to keep up. Besides that, all i do is listen to a few podcasts, gmail, etc, but everything seems like its in slow motion. Chrome is unbearable - i just avoid using it anymore. The funny thing is that i dont remember this phone being THAT slow. I know overtime, my definition of slow will change as faster phones come out, but i have almost no experience with anything newer than my phone. Even my captivate seems about as fast as the nexus - which is a VERY old phone.
Right now im running slimbean from about a month ago.
Anyone else having these troubles? Anything i can do to speed it up a bit?
Im probably gonna pick up a gs4 nexus once i see it for a little less than its selling for now. Which model is the best to buy? Id be running AOSP software on whichever one i pick, so strictly hardware wise - which is the best? Do i want the one from korea with the octacore whatever - or should i go with ATT/tmobiles version? Which version does google play sell? What about the gs4 active? Ive heard the internals are a bit different, and its not AMOLED like the others.

I'm running PA 3.65 on lk 7. Oc'd to 1.3 ghz. Phone seems pretty fluid to me. Definitely there is a difference between my phone and say, a Galaxy s3, but it's not to where it makes me feel my phone is obsolete. Plus, the gnex has a great development base with not only Roms but kernels as well. This extends the lives of our devices greatly. I plan to stick and wait it out a while longer myself.
My advice, delve deeper into your gnex and try some more combinations and tweaks. See if there's something you could do. Currently I've been on a governor binge--trying all the various governors, looking for the best for me, battery-wise and performance. Overall I'm happy.

I'm on stock 4.2.2 which is rooted and I've modified certain elements using Paul O'Brien's MoDaCo Toolkit (which uses the Xposed Framework Mod). I think about upgrading from time to time but never because I feel I need to. I am more than happy with my Galaxy Nexus (bearing in mind I don't play intensive games).
I would wait a bit longer and see what the LG Optimus G2 is like and maybe upgrade early 2014. The next Nexus might be released in November anyway.

I don't think the phone is really slow, it's just that the amount of memory available is starting to be a problem. When you have plenty of memory the phone is fine, but between the OS, Chrome, the new Hangouts, the new Music player, and whatever else you have running you can quickly run out of memory and when all your background apps are restarting the phone is definitely not smooth.

Since 4.2.2 the Gnex started to be more laggy. If you use a custom rom and kernel (i.e. CM 10.1 based rom and fancy or franco or ak kernel) you can indeed tweak it up so it feels quite fast again, then again, the battery drains like crazy, a solution for this is buy an extended 3800mAh battery (I've one in my Nexus and it at least doubles the battery life, means you EASILY get through the day, even with overclocked settings and heavy use).
Imo it's still a very nice device.. But don't expect quad core performance from a 2011 dual core phone
My Note 2 with AOSP 4.2.2 rom absolutely is a beast and battery life is awesome (stock 3100mAh battery).
So long story short, if you overall still like your nexus: install CM 10.1 and i.e. fancy kernel, overclock it to about 1.4GHz, get the extended 3800mAh battery and it will make a big difference already to stock.
If you have enough money aside and feel like having something new, get a SGS4 or HTC One (awesome design), or if you like a big screen on top of that like me, I definitely recommend the Note 2 (it's considerably cheaper than the SGS4 and in terms of performance with irl use the difference is not really noticeable), or wait for the Note 3 .

When is a downgrade an upgrade?

Before you write your phone off, try going back to 4.1.2. I've been using MiNCO v5 (which was my favourite 4.1.2 ROM, comes with franco's milestone 6 and is super stable and minimal.) Just flash v2.1 of this transformation pack as if it were a gapps package (actual gapps are already built into the ROM)
Your phone will have all the 4.2.2 goodies (except toggles and LS widgets, but there's an app for that) with none of the slow sluggish feel.
Try it. I promise you won't be disappointed.
P.S This mod and crossbreeder are the only 2 additions I'd STRONGLY reccomend. The first unifies the "holo" theme of stock JB (read the thread, it's awesome!) and the second does some amazing things which include system wide adblocking and smooth DNS caching just for starters.
P.P.S If you go back to 4.1.2 just make sure you have the latest radio for your region and DON'T RESTORE SYSTEM APPS FROM TITANIUM BACKUP.

thanks for all the responses. I think ill try the few roms and kernels you guys suggested before bailing on this phone. I personally like my rom to be as close to stock as possible, which is why ive been using slim bean for so long. I think ill try CM first before any other rom, or possibly going back to 4.1 like someone suggested.
Since available memory is probably the issue, is it worth using titanium backup to freeze apps that I never use? I dont use hangouts or anything like that.

Since available memory is probably the issue, is it worth using titanium backup to freeze apps that I never use? I dont use hangouts or anything like that.

Try greenify instead of faffing about with freeze and unfreeze in TB. Also, this might be the radio you want, I'm not sure if you're gsm or cdma on AT&T (I'm from the UK) so the best way is to check in your settings on your current setup:
Settings>About phone>Baseband version
Though I'd highly recommend reading the thread just to check, it's amazing how big the change is when using an out of date radio.

I'm no expert but it seems to me that Android devices are similar to Windows in respect to slowing down over time. I think the complexity of today's apps contribute greatly to a phones alitity to keep up but not as much as you may think. I uses chache cleaner ng to get rid of a good portion of garbage on a regular basis and once in awile a fresh flash really speeds things up again. Don't forget about all those apps we think we need but never use. Get rid of them.
I ran errands today Streaming Slacker Radio, running navigation, and answering and making phone calls and my phone never game me a reason to think it was time to a new one.

Here is my solution - I suffered the same problem like you.
First, it has nothing to do with low memory. Android stops "old" apps, if it needs memory. There are about 1 million posts about that (wrong) story - but no one wants to listen to it
The problem is that the storage is not trimmed properly. You can use Lagfix to trim storage. Try it, it will work.
But the real solution is to factory reset your mobile (I mean wiping everything, restore the original system and root again). This way the storage will be trimmed too and it will be blazing fast again. If you leave at least 3GB free storage, the slowdown won't happen too soon again. Although a 4.2.2 ROM will then be fast too, the real speed you will only get with 4.1.2 (I'm using Liquidsmooth 2rc8 - fast, stable, feature rich).
That's my experience and I won't change my ROM until Android 5 is out... :fingers-crossed:

I get where you're coming from, but the GNex has a dual-core processer, with 1gb of RAM, if its feeling slow because you've been playing with you're friends quad-core phones with twice the RAM, then its definitely time to upgrade because no matter what ROM or Kernel you use, you're going to notice the difference. IMO I love my GNex, I'm running AOKP 4.2.2 and I couldn't be happier for the moment. However, when the Nexus 5 comes out I'll be the first in line.

I'm coming from Liquid Smooth 2.5 and running CM 10.0 since a few days. So far so good, but I'm missing a few features of Liquid Smooth and would love to give it a try again... Thanks!!

I know how Android memory management works, and that's exactly what I'm taking about. When apps get stopped it makes the phone slower because the apps need to be started again when you go back to them.

Trimming /data trims the storage as well as storage is /data/media. I don't think every phone is affected by this trim problem as they don't all use the same emmc (see the trim thread in this forum).
I also agree with you 100% that 4.1.2 performed a lot faster for me than 4.2.2 on my Galaxy Nexus. I don't think the hardware of the Galaxy Nexus or even the Nexus 7 fully handled Android 4.2 smoothly. Software optimizations could improve that. Actually on my HTC One on the GE (AOSP like) version of 4.2.2, the UI could get a little jittery.
While I agree with you that Android killing apps is normal when it runs low on memory, I can confirm CM10 killed apps a lot less often than CM10.1. Even with the memory leak patches implemented earlier this year into CM10.1, my RAM would get low enough that the lowmemorykiller would kick into gear a lot more often than CM10. I don't think this is the only cause of slowness in Android 4.2 but it can contribute. The most likely candidate is systemUI which Google changed how it works as in 4.2 it shows the background on the launcher in recents instead of overlaying recents on top of your current app. As that has to load the wallpaper from the launcher it may slow down if it has to pull it from memory.
PS. You say you won't change your ROM until Android 5 is out but 4.3 may fix a lot of the issues in 4.2 and the updated bluetooth support is a must have for users with Low Energy devices.

Snapdragon version is the quad core one not exynos( Octa core)

Hi guys, I just got the tab 3 8.0, and I like most part of it but the performance is seriously bad..I have already restored all my apps from Google server. While running apps and switching between them, I can't take all the lags it has. I just got it today so I can return it if I want but I'm wondering if rooting this device actually gains much performance improvements. I used to have a galaxy s2x, which has a similar if not worse spec than this tablet, and I don't know if It was because I running rooted version of touchwiz or not but the performance was pretty good. This tablet is much worse. A simple reboot fixes the lag but after a few hours, as I use it, I notice the stutters while using it. I just had a serious lag in Google plus app, it was stuttering so bad, but it came back to smooth after 5 seconds.
So will installing the custom Rom available for tab 3 8.0 improve the performance significantly? I know there are not many ROMs for tab 3 8.0, so any user of this device just rooted the tab and tweak it themselves to gain performance improvements? Not just little bit, but a lot.

One thread is enough, you don't have to post the same question in multiple sections.
As I said on your other thread, stop blaming the device and look at your apps. My 8.0 isn't laggy at all. In fact it's pretty zippy. Chances are one of your apps is causing the issue or you have too much stuff filling your memory. Do a factory reset. If the lag stays gone add your apps back a couple at a time till you find the one that's not playing nice. How much free space/memory do you have left? The fact that the lag goes away when you reboot points to it being an app problem.

go to developers options and turn off all animations,
also disable CPU power saving option in power saving mode,
then check if you feel any difference

So I believe it was ram issue. Too little ram left when it was stuttering really bad. However, I'm wondering why this device was not releasing ram by closing open apps for the forgoing app to run well. This is the android way of managing ram isn't it? But when I checked the ram manager in the task manager app that came with the tab, there was very little ram left, less than 100mb I believe.
After I have been using it for more now, I also rooted it, and I deleted almost all the unnecessary bloatware. I think I see a huge improvement in performance after I did this, deleting bloatware.
The tablet runs pretty well now.
Although..I still see some stutters in animations, where the animation has dropped frame rates. Is this just due to Touchwiz? It doesn't happen every time, but sometime when opening app, or switching between apps in recent apps panel. The animations sometimes are pretty choppy. It is not a huge deal, but I just remember that my S2X was much smoother. Maybe it's because I was running a custom rom which was heavily tweaked by deviant development.
Any info would be great!

Hmmm, i have no problem at all, the tab 3 runs pretty smooth, stock. Now I have set the animations to 0.5 in developer options and it runs even smoother. Ok, it's not as fast as the Note 2, but it runs very nice. Very happy with it. (Using Nova launcher)
(I also disabled some if the apps that come with it, SNS Samsung Facebook, Samsung widgets, flipboard an the lot)

I see. Mine is running pretty nice right now but I'm feel kind of afraid as I use it thinking "will this animation be choppy?" As I long press the home button or something. Lol I really don't like choppiness.
So you don't notice ANY choppiness in animation? I want to know if it's only my device so that I can figure out what's the cause. I'm using nova launcher as well btw.

Tab S lag?

Hi guys,
I am planning to buy the Tab S with the Exynos processor in the Netherlands, but 50% of the people says it lags like hell, and the other 50% says it is really smooth and the best thing you can buy!
I can't decide whether it is good or not ( it has Android L).
Please help me out!

Your question will not get you a clear answer as you need to match your specific user profile and previous devices with those saying the device is laggy. I do not find my Tab S 10.5 laggy on stock, rooted 5.0.2. I'm not a gamer and mainly use the device for media consumption (reading news, YouTube, Netflix and email), none of which is too taxing. I replaced the stock launcher with Nova Prime launcher and used Titanium Backup to freeze the majority of bloat wear which reduced the start times and memory used. My previous devices are a Nexus 5 phone and a Nexus 10 tablet.
Using this kind of analysis you may be able to determine if this tablet is "laggy" for your personal usage profile.

I'm not sure where and when this lag occurs, but I've never experienced it.
However I'm not a gamer.

It doesn't lag in games in my experience. However, IMO it lags when you are switching between apps and launching apps, which is weird because I often use the multiwindow feature and the tablet is clearly capable of running two apps at the same time.
Btw, the reason why some people think it doesn't lag is because lag is a very subjective issue. What I consider lag may be totally acceptable to others.

Well I compare it to my htc m8 which is a powerful device in its own right and it compares admirably most of the time.
I think it's mostly down to TouchWiz not the hardware. Just too much bumpf under the hood.
Samsung need to learn that most people don't want all that baggage and to provide a more minimal experience. They can always offer the extras as optional downloads.
However I must say things like Web browsing have improved with lollipop and the stock browser. Its about the smoothest experience of all the available browsers.

Oh yes. Having used a Nexus 4 I know how smooth stock android can be. Samsung installs way too much crap on their devices, but I like the multi window feature too much to give up touchwiz. Last I heard the multiwindow feature still hasn't been implemented in AOSP Marshmallow.
Stock browser is amazing. I used to use chrome but it lagged like crazy. Not sure how Google can screw up chrome that badly, but then again chrome is a resource hog even on Windows.

NEver be a gamer on tablet, i always use it for media comsumption.
but, yeah, it's kinda laggy because my tablets installed with pre installed apps + full google apps.
And it's kinda lag sometime.

If you have Root, install Kernel Aduitor (free). The only thing you need to change is the Min CPU freq, 250 mhz is pretty slow.
450 or 650 mhz get things snappy.

I rooted for a few reasons. Proper device backups with Titanium Backups, superior audio with Viper4Android, Stickmount and immersion mode with GDM Gesture Control plus it's customized gestures. I use those root apps on all my devices.
I froze apps as several were being automatically started at boot time slowing down startup and unnecessarily using memory. I wanted a cleaner experience. The unwanted apps also clutter up your app menu, making it slightly more difficult to find the app you wanted to start. In general I freeze over removing as you cannot use that much of the freed up space except for SuperSU, Viper4Androis and Busybox. There are a few more but far less than the space freed by removing bloat wear.
I also dark themed TW settings and the notification bar as I cannot stand white backgrounds with black text but that was secondary to the root reasons listed above.
Due to the ability to root without tripping KNOX I could root without loosing my warranty. Without that I would have waited for a year until the warranty expired.

For what it's worth, b4 I rooted I used Package Disabler pro and disabled 104 different services/packages. It made a huge difference and everything worked just fine. But, I got the rooting fever and now I'm even happier with my Tab S.
