I was just wondering if anyone planned on porting Linux kernel 3.0 to the iconia a100... since it seems that no one pays any attention to the development section..
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
You can't and the 3.00 Kernal is the same as the current kernal just with a different name. 3.00 Kernal isn't supported on Tegra 2 anyways.
Based on what information?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
Firstly, no developer would be able to make a kernel (at least a competent and GPL compliant one) until Acer has dropped the Kernel Source for the ICS update.
Secondly, it remains to be seen whether the Tegra 2 drivers indeed work with the v3.0 Kernel as the ICS update for the Xoom still uses a 2.6.39 kernel.
And for a bonus third, the 3.0 version of the Linux kernel is NOT the same with a different version number, it carries on with the same updates/bug fixes from previous releases for sure, but is not the same as previous kernel versions.
Thank you toy face. That is a more logical explanation. So there would be no way of porting?

Thor's A500 ROM runs the 3.1 kernel, too.. I do wish people in here would actually KNOW what they're talking about before talking about it...
I wish people didn't keep comparing a tegra based phone to our tegra based tablet >.> different guts inside. buuuuuut if thor figured how to make a 3.0 kernal for the a500 then there is hope to have one made for the a100 (since they are the same processor family an model!) only thing we would need to do would be screen drivers possibly hdmi an the micro usb port.

Is there a way to port honeycomb to the epic then turn down the resolution to where it looks like gingerbread.... I saw this done on some other phones.... if it could be done would it be worth it..... would there be any performance gain...
Sent from my Evo Killer using XDA Premium App
It wouldn't be worth it. Honeycomb was made for tablets, not phones. Beside, we don't even have the SDK, so there's not much to work with, so you wouldn't get any "performance gain". Just use the honeycomb theme if you want the look.
Nah I dont want the look I just wanted to know "if" all the above in the op..... I saw when you install honeycomb on a low res device the ui becomes gingerbread like and figured that might be good for having honeycomb on a phone... Honeycomb also has some APIs for game controllers and hdmi so idk I thought it might be cool to see what some of our devs might think about it....
Sent from my Evo Killer using XDA Premium App
Honeycomb has under 2000 apps and no support for anything but the Tegra 2 chipset. Not worth it , but it couldn't be done anyway since there isn't any source code for it.
How did the hd2 get it

An SDK port that runs extremely poorly and isn't worth the effort when we don't even have an AOSP rom yet.

So why hasn't google relased the source? Isn't it against the law not to release linux source?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Not at all. They are obligated to release Kernel Source under GPL but nothing forces them to release the OS's source code. Google has publicly stated many times that they are withholding Honeycomb source (for now) to avoid dozens of cheap android tablets (and I mean 600mhz processors and 800x480 10 inch resistive touch screens) from cheapening the "New" Android by running poorly.

Could someone maybe confirm this to be true or tell me why I'm dumb.

The reason there are no custom 4.0.4 is source has not been released. Until it is, everything will be stock based.

Also when contacting Samsung they said they could not help. I know it is something that I am missing and the source is not the newest version, but I do not know what to look for. I have been looking at the Galaxy Tab and Skyrocket custom kernel sources.

I'm sure a mod will move this soon but this belongs in general, development is for actual developing not asking questions.
His kernels do kick ass but they get updated so often I feel it would be very hard to keep up while porting. The nexus 4 apparently has quite a few differences.

AFAIK the only differences are the camera, lte, and storage. I imagine it would be an easy port. Then again I'm not a dev either.
Also we would need a 4.2 build of android to run it anyway.

People didn't seem this quick to yell in the epic ROM threads.
But the same thing happend with Bluetooth on the OG Epic and Android 4.2.2 the driver stack broke BT, but it was not always listed in the op.
But I'll become a helpful S3 forum member as i learn more.

It's wouldn't be in the OP, because HDMI mirroring has to be supported at the kernel level for it to be present at all. It has absolutely nothing to do with the rom.
I think this is why you're not getting any straight answers because you're asking the wrong question.

Devs don't add this to their OPs because it's not a ROM related issue. In fact it's not really an issue at all. The simple fact is that vanilla android, also known as AOSP does not support HDMI-out and with that said there's no need for any OP to state that HDMI-out isn't supported because it's known across the board with AOSP. This also includes the Google Nexus devices since they have no manufacture overlays and are pure vanilla android, which is why I suggested looking into Slimports because I heard they provided HDMI-out support for some Nexus devices but don't hold me to it as I never purchased one so I'm not sure if that logic is true. If so, they might work on othe oem devices running AOSP ROMs but again don't hold me to that. You should look into it though.

It might be known across the board to devs that HDMI mirroring is not supported by AOSP, but the majority of people are ROM users who wouldn't know that. It should be stated in the OP of every AOSP ROM, otherwise their threads are gonna get filled with these types of questions. Thanks for the info though, knowing is half the battle. However, I seem to remember running a few different AOSP ROMs on my GNex that did support HDMI out, not just Slim ROMs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
