Franco kernel for the N4 - Sprint LG Optimus G

So, it seems that this kernel is absolutely kicking ass for the N4. I dont have the skill, but would someone here be able to adapt it to our phone? Franco stated that the source or whatever is public.

I'm sure a mod will move this soon but this belongs in general, development is for actual developing not asking questions.
His kernels do kick ass but they get updated so often I feel it would be very hard to keep up while porting. The nexus 4 apparently has quite a few differences.

Yea, seems like he does release nightlies or similar pretty often. Maybe we can just get the official releases or something.

AFAIK the only differences are the camera, lte, and storage. I imagine it would be an easy port. Then again I'm not a dev either.
Also we would need a 4.2 build of android to run it anyway.

I'm told partitions are different to, and you will have a unfixable brick if you flash

Well, obviously someone smart enough will have to adapt it. But, I can only presume that the actual code that does whatever it does, will work.

-sigh-...this post got my hopes up for any sign of progress for this phone

I figure there is someone out there smart enough that would know what to do with the coding. Apparently, there are some GREAT devs coming to the phone. But nothing has really cropped up yet.

That is CM7, not the ICS version. Also doesn't answer what other devs will bring.
there are unofficial ports that are being worked on
but official from source might be CM9
unless some one here beats them to it
Let met me just look into my magic crystal ball, it should tell me which developer will be the first to release ice cream sandwich
You should totally expect us to be able to answer this question for you. We know when it will be released, but we would rather not tell you

I dunno, you may be right. I know the CM team is actively working on it, that's more than I can say for any of the devs here. I mean, I could start to expect it from Team Kang but they've been a little silent on the issue.
I don't believe we have anyone that can just use the source to make it work on the T989 though. I believe everyone will need to use a base from somewhere else. I think we'll see it pretty soon after another device does.
I don't know anything though, this is just what my foolish brain tells me.
Someone is definitely working on an unofficial port
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
It will come with patience, obviously.
you can expect many developers to want to start making a ROM based on it, since it its the newest version of Android

Like others have already said, nobody knows for sure. Though it's very likely that cm9 will be the first ics rom available on our devices. There aren't a lot of devs that build from source, and if they do, they usually use cm as their base. Not saying there aren't talented people here...that's just what I've seen.
I took a crack at compiling from source, but with 3 kids and a fulltime job, my time is limited. There's a lot that needs to be done...

I did it before rohan on the sprint variant and it is mostly working, but I don't plan to release it. Flashing all n4 partitions is not a great idea and could brick your phone. Cm is coming. Just waiting on the Korean jb source.

Better to just wait for AOSP based roms once JB source is released.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but I would feel guilty releasing this when I know that the repartition could kill your phone. I know the phone has been out and you guys have had to wait awhile, but you've waited this long, why screw your phone up when legitimate cm is close. With korean 3.4 kernel source, we will be able to have cm done fairly quickly. It's not up yet but will be soon. Also, I have some exciting stuff planned for after cm (sense, miui, and whatever else you guys want).

The problem is the source.
We have ics and ics source. No one wants to waste time making ics aosp when jb has been out going on a year soon.
They just got source for the Korean jb version of our phone this week. They are working on it but it has some differences.
None of the phones are the same. Different cameras, radios, nfc chips, modems....
That is why.

Love this phone, love the hardware, but we've been hearing it's coming "soon" for months now. LG either did this on purpose, or miraculously made this the hardest phone to develop for. I'm now regretting switching away from Samsung...who seems to be much more in tune with the Dev community and providing what's needed to let developers have their way with the phones. I wish LG would get it together and give the dev's what they need.

I'm honestly so glad I switched from my bb to this. I don't have the crazy desire for JB. Just glad I got rid of the Bb
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I swear I am not trolling.
But you said your happy you got rid of the BlackBerry and I on the other hand really want to check out the new bb10. I don't think I will buy it. As much as it has to offer it still won't compare. It does feel a niche in the community.
I think it will do well in the older market (30+ professional outside of IT). There is also a tremendous gap now in phone sizes. The only phone with a halfway normal size seems to be the iPhone and most of us still assume the phone as trendy and a fancy feature phone. Not a mini laptop like the Android.
And the reason we want JB is a lot of us downgraded on the software to get a phone with superior hardware. Furthermore, most of us thought the software would catch up sooner than it has. ICS is great but it is like the first production year of a new model of car. Jelly Bean is more refined. There are also additions in performance, battery life, smoothness, and apps.
For example, my wife's phone will tell her what the expected drive time is to work. She didn't program it. It just knows do to her normal schedule. ICS is great software. JB brings with it the very early stages of AI that adapts to your needs.
Just think what Key Lime will bring us. Eventually it will be so advanced it will go one of two ways. One, to hard to develop. Or the other which I hope for, full integration. The software will know what screen you have and radio you use. You just install and go. We won't have to count in manufacturers to release the source. The software will adapt for your nfc chip and gpu.
I honestly don't know why it has taken so long already. The SOC should do a simple handshake with the OS and be in its way.
Um, what was I taking about.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Actually scratch that. I had the 8530 so I know the pain of waiting for an os bb6, and in the end we did get it lol

The photon's performance would have been greatly improved

From an update standpiont, yes, Moto bites. From a general software standpoint, LG is the worst of the big names. Their OTA's run more like alphas, maybe betas. Have yet to see an LG without major software mistakes and I've worked on a fair number of them.
That being said, I know as soon as JB source drops joker, th3bill and myself are going to try to get as far away from LG's code as possible. This is mainly for our sanity.

Correct. Once Sprint JB source drops (hopefully after my move) I want to get all the devs together and go over how to approach future ROMs. I see a stock based, aosp and N4 based. Also see hybrids of all three as well as ports like Paranoid at that point.
I know we all have our strong and week points and think we should build off that for the end users. How is everybody doing for web space and domains? After the move I plan to restructure/rebuild Martian Imperium as a more multi-dev website and already have some folks on board for the change.

It's wouldn't be in the OP, because HDMI mirroring has to be supported at the kernel level for it to be present at all. It has absolutely nothing to do with the rom.
I think this is why you're not getting any straight answers because you're asking the wrong question.

Devs don't add this to their OPs because it's not a ROM related issue. In fact it's not really an issue at all. The simple fact is that vanilla android, also known as AOSP does not support HDMI-out and with that said there's no need for any OP to state that HDMI-out isn't supported because it's known across the board with AOSP. This also includes the Google Nexus devices since they have no manufacture overlays and are pure vanilla android, which is why I suggested looking into Slimports because I heard they provided HDMI-out support for some Nexus devices but don't hold me to it as I never purchased one so I'm not sure if that logic is true. If so, they might work on othe oem devices running AOSP ROMs but again don't hold me to that. You should look into it though.

It might be known across the board to devs that HDMI mirroring is not supported by AOSP, but the majority of people are ROM users who wouldn't know that. It should be stated in the OP of every AOSP ROM, otherwise their threads are gonna get filled with these types of questions. Thanks for the info though, knowing is half the battle. However, I seem to remember running a few different AOSP ROMs on my GNex that did support HDMI out, not just Slim ROMs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Is It Me

Or Has The Development For This Phone Seriously Slowed Down?
The S4 came out. Many are working on both devices or more, 5 or so Roms just got updated I wouldn't see that as slowing down very much. This is also the time a lot of people get the used device to Dev on so many may come to our community as well. If you get "bored" you can try to build yourself or use att Roms also, so long as they don't have their updater-script device specific.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I think the above is true. It's just not shiny enough anymore. I still love it though!
Another aspect, from a development point of view is: why? Why develop for the S3? It's already over-saturated with (mostly) TW and AOSP ROMs. And one ROM is pretty much the same as the next. What I'm trying to say is, nobody is going to reinvent the wheel, because there is nothing wrong with the one we're using. If I'm being honest, we already have a ridiculously large selection of ROMs to choose from. There's not really anything to update.
Well over in sprint forum we have cnexus working on the sense five rom...i dont think its slowing to much
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
There is always a slow down between major Android releases as well. We will see a huge uptick once 4.2-based TW ROMs launch and even more when key lime pie launches.

This!!! And further more like aerowinder stated, there isn't much more that can be done. Almost all AOSP Roms have the same issues and will continue to for the most part, they all use the same overall base for the most part, if one has more "features" it is more prone to breaks, same goes for TouchWiz Roms. The more stuff messed with and customized the larger the chance for breaks. I think the forum is bloated as is but thats not a problem as it gives options.

Not trying to bash all the hard core rom cooks out there who packs in features into their roms, it is just my preference. You guys are doing an excellent job.
I know how much work it takes to develop a piece of software, especially when working by yourself or a tiny team. And for free.

I'm watching Ubuntu development and its not progressed any further on the kernel level than the last kernel I posted - it's in Development if you want to try out the OS but nothing works. I have to wait for Ubuntu to update the kernel source... They're still using 4.1.2 source code which is what they launched with. They need to work on the kernel before it's going to be any use.
First release isn't until October so I don't think they are going to do much kernel development right now and instead they're going to focus on app development

No one is working to port 4.2.2 update to our phone..
I am relatively new to S3,, is it really difficult to get 4.2.2 from international s3?
and in original android development, besides cm, paranoid asop roms there is nothing else.

It is not possible to port international ROMs to the Us S3. Entirely different hardware. We will have to wait for an official 4.2.2 release or rely on AOKP, AOSP, CM, etc.

That's quite the project you are thinking about undertaking!

That is typical after a device has been out for a year or so... It will slow down a bit.
I wouldn't worry too much, though. Our devices are going to get the 4.2.2 update... Things will pick up again.
I heard a leak may be exposed within the week. Rumor, of course... But from Samobile.com, they are typically a good source of information for stuff like that.

Really?! That would be awesome! I had so much fun back when we would get weekly leaks!
Can you link to where you saw that?

Seems to be in the comments here:
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/06/19/sammobile-prepare-your-flagship-device/
Can't find much else about it but I guess we'll know tomorrow?
I found this... it seems that a fixed leak for the international version is what's coming...

Lol
I couldn't help but laugh a little at all those comments.
But I can just about guarantee its not for any of the US versions.

Yeah I about lost my mind trying to keep up with some of those comments haha.
It looks like its the I9300 for sure though, we haven't even had one test build for US variants and it makes sense, especially with all the features of the S4 that Samsung is porting over. Like it or not, they are always going to update Exynos devices before Qualcomm, especially when it comes to the S3 because of the relatively large disparity between the performance of the two versions.
