Hey guys,
Sorry for the uneducated n00b question, but I am unfamiliar with HTC devices. I have a friend who managed to root his Evo 4g using revolutionary and just informed me that he accepted the most recent OTA update while still rooted, and no longer has root. I myself own the Epic 4g Touch and have never messed around with an Evo, so terms like s-off and bootloader don't make a lot of sense to me. If anybody can point me in the right direction on what i should do in order to restore my bud's root access, I would be ever so grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Joe
Not enough information given so far, however; if your friend still has the Revolutionary watermarked Hboot (bootloader), which he might, then he can follow the same advice given in this post.

I'm very sorry for posting a question like this, as it's been answered already (I'm sure), I just can't find a more clear-cut answer.
I just got the HTC EVO 4G last night, delivered in the mail. It came pre-loaded with 2.2. I'm not sure if this is the OTA update or if it different, so I'm looking for the root guide for this particular build. There are a ton of walkthroughs out there, it seems, and each one has about 100 pages of replies attached to them. I've read each one, and I'm still not completely sure which one of the guides I should use to root my awesome new phone.
Thanks for the help in advance.. I am learning a ton on these forums and can't wait to start trying out roms.

i'm just making sure it's the right root for the particular hboot. I'm still learning what to do about ROMs. I had a Huawei Ascend for Cricket before this that I had successfully rooted, but there weren't any real ROMs out for it. So I used the root access to get rid of the bloatware and get Barnacle with busybox and superuser. That's pretty much the only experience I have.
I just want to make sure that I don't brick my brand new phone hehe.
Afternoon all,
I will try to provide all of the information I can in hopes someone can give me an idea on where I stand and where I need to go from here to get my phone the way I would like it.
Incoming Evo information:
MEID - A100000D98BC65
Version - 0002
Baseband - 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel - 2.6.32.15-g746f4f0 #58
Build - 3.26.651.6
PRI - 1.34_003
PRL - 60674
Bootloader Information:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-2 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT- 0.93.0000
Root Method - Simple Root (forget which version)
Quick Background:
I don't know much about rooting phones but have come to understand the process and reasons behind it over the past several months. Purchased my phone on release, rooted it very early, all is great. I have always had the S-ON feature on my phone and it seems that several ROM's I would like to take advantage of require the S-OFF feature as to my understanding, it means you have "full root". I could be/probably am wrong here.
With the talk of backing up RSA keys to not lose 4G and other hiccups popping up, I want to make sure I use the best possible method to get everything as it should be. I currently ran the original PC136IMG (I believe this is the RUU) to bring my phone to "stock". My reasoning behind this was to push my phone to full stock and re-root to attain the S-OFF feature.
Now when I boot into bootloader and attempt to flash, I get a black screen with an EVO and a Red triangle/exclamation sign. What throws me off is because I can get into the bootloader, running the aforementioned RUU didn't seem to unroot me. To be honest, I don't even know if there is a full unroot method even avilable as numerous Google searches really give a wide variety of answers.
What I am trying to do:
All I would like to do is unroot my phone and then re-root it with a newer method so I can have S-OFF feature and update all my Radios/PRI/etc.... that I need to do so I can get the full functionality of my phone. I *think* Calk has a thread on this and although I have read it numerous times, maybe I am to dense to get it and need a helping hand. If anymore information is needed, I am happy to oblige. Thanks to anyone who can lend me a hand.
You kind of jumped the gun with the unrooting, you could have just ran Unrevoked Forever and called it a day. But now that you are unrooted, use Unrevoked 3.32 and that will fully root your phone for you, including replacing your recovery (I believe it gives you Clockwork). Do that, you'll be good to go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896298
Can you update to thread newest sprint software update (3.70)?

Just go to settings system updates ,HTC update ,and make it phone search for ota,it should prompt u to download the 3.70 update and than ull know u r full unrooted and up to date, than run unrevoked ,,,,that way ull b updated and rooted...
Thanks for the quick advice. My only worry with unrevoked is I have heard that it has the possibility of losing RSA keys. Does that have any truth behind it or will unrevoked put me to S-OFF and from there I am golden.
I ran Unrevoked3 earlier today. I downloaded an Amon recovery img and had unrevoked install that (File / Custom Recovery) instead of Clockwork after hearing about some WiMax issues with Clockwork.
After completing the root, I did step 6A from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045. This should back up the RSA keys, after the fact at least. You need to be rooted to complete the steps using adb.
So far no trouble with 4G. It connects to sprint and lets me transfer data, so things look good. FWIW, my radio is 2.15.00.11.19, with PRI 1.90_003, on software 3.70.651.1.
Quick update. First, thank you all for your contributions to me with this. I went ahead and followed the unrevoked method and everything seems to look good on my end. All updates are there, S-OFF is on (terrible at puns), and all is well for now at least. Also, thanks for the help on that Skypoint but I have yet to venture into the wild wilderness that is adb which I will probably leave for another day. Anyways, thanks once more all as I do really appreciate it.

Phone won't load recovery -
My phone currently has 2.3.3 and will not root because the firmware is too "new" according to Unrevoked.
How do I backtrack to 2.2?
Also, the phone is not rooted (s-on) and recovery once again will not load properly; i get the red exclamation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
There are a few threads addressing this issue already, and the short answer from what I have found in my research, because I too took the OTA update and have looked in to this myself, is that there is no option.
If you are S-ON and have the new Bootloader and newest OTA update, you just have to hang tight until the devs behind Unrevoked or other such methods figure out a workaround for the newest bootloader.

Hey man, I am sorry to inform you that there is currently no root method for the software you're on. You can't downgrade to 2.2, the RUU won't let you do it. The new bootloader that you're on is not downgradeable, and it is still currently locked. Hopefully a new exploit is figured out soon, but for now you just need to wait it out. Or trade your Evo with someone who still has froyo!
Thanks for the info guys.
Not sure is any of this could render your phone without functionality and If you are willing to give it a shot, try the first part of my post. After I unrooted the defective EVO to accept the OTA (since it was going back in a day anyway and didn't care if the root was lost) adn it was along with my .76 Hboot. I was able to get root back by using the HBOOT in stock recovery and loading the RUU posted with of course loading the usb drivers. Now, to be honest, I never used unrevoked to begin with on that EVO, so never checked son/soff before.
If for some glorious reason you are able to load the ruu and it comes up...try the root option also posted from the link to xHausx.
Here's hoping....but reality will probably set in and a short wait is needed for a real method.

unfortunately no root for 2.3 but rumor has it that htc is working on unlocking the new bootloader with a update coming in the near future prob 2.3.4
Ok, a few users here have offered advice/assistance, but I fear this problem has been forgotten.
I am stuck with an S-ON, 2.3.4 Droid Incredible, and am looking for a way to acquire root again.
This happened a few weeks ago, with the leak of the 2.3.4 OTA. Flashed S-ON via CWM (not aware I would permanently lose Root), then flashed the OTA as PB31IMG.zip in HBOOT.
Now, Unrevoked no longer roots the device. HBOOT will not allow downgrading to a 2.2 IMG, nor will it flash any downgraded Radio/HBOOT versions. I've tried them all from Dougpiston.com, even the signed ones.
I've attempted to contact the folks at Unrevoked about this issue on IRC, but I can't ever get a reliable dialogue going with anyone, and I believe they are busy working on Revolution, for Incredible 2/S & Newer devices.
Throwing my hands up, I even called Verizon, gave them an excuse to send me a replacement, just so I could start fresh with a 2.2 phone, but I am out of warranty.
I really want to enjoy Sense 3.0/MIUI, even Cyanogenmod, but the outlook is not so good.
Is there any solution I haven't tried yet? Please help.
Unless Unrevoked or someone else finds a new root method you're pretty much out of luck.

Yep, same situation here, nothing will re-root if you did the GB OTA with S-ON bootloader. just have to wait and see if somebody comes up with something new or Unrevoked comes up with a new method.
EDIT: and I'm willing to bet if you get one from Verizon it might already be 2.3.4

That's most likely true. 2.3.4 is being pushed out to the Incredible now, so they would probably run the newest RUU on their Incredible devices.
I feel your pain deadsoulboy, and I've seen your posts lamenting your situation on other threads. Only solace I can offer you is that generally the source code and RUU are made available within 30 days of the OTA, at which point the developers are completely free to tear into them with reckless abandon and hopefully the folks at unrevoked figure things out.
It's also distinctly possible that HTC will unlock the bootloader the way it has with others of its handsets, in which case you'll be back in business.
Until then, my friend, I believe you are rootless.
i have the same problem. its been a couple months.... am i still hosed?
Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
I used Scotty1223's instructions a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm.
So I burnt out my Cpu on my original rooted Dinc and got a replacement however after playing around on my replacement Dinc verizon pushed the update to 2.3.4 onto my phone. I would've stopped it but I figured I would just downgrade and root again however the new HBOOT 92 didn't let me downgrade i tried the unrevoked method anyway and i got a custom recovery so i restored MIUI on my current Dinc however i seem to still be unrooted? for example Titanium Backup can't delete system apps. i still have S-on and the new HBOOT 92 however i also have a mac so i am a little stuck and confused on how to regain full root access with s-off again any hep would be greatly appreciated.

Check this out. http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-2-3-4-root-downgrade-s-off.html
Just so we're clear lol obviously I have a Verizon HTC Incredible 2, Gingerbread (2.3.4) with HBOOT 0.98...
I'd like to get rid of all the bloatware, or freeze it, whatever needs to be done. I'm not a n00b but I am a bit of a rookie when it comes to Android devices specifically, I've never really dabbled in this department.
I was following: incredibleforum.com/forum/htc-incredible-2/9918-successful-rooting-incredible-2-finally.html
I figured out the ADB thing, so don't worry about that. I went to try doing the revolutionary s-off part before I could gain root access to my phone, but it told me my device was not supported, that's when I figured out I have hboot 0.98, pffffttt. I wonder if it's even possible to do at this point in time. I just can't seem to find what I'm looking for...
Could someone please point me in the right direction? What am I missing or not finding for myself? >_<
Check out the dinc2 development section. It seems as if you can do so via attn1 help.
I can't link from my tablet but its on the first development page.
