I'm very sorry for posting a question like this, as it's been answered already (I'm sure), I just can't find a more clear-cut answer.
I just got the HTC EVO 4G last night, delivered in the mail. It came pre-loaded with 2.2. I'm not sure if this is the OTA update or if it different, so I'm looking for the root guide for this particular build. There are a ton of walkthroughs out there, it seems, and each one has about 100 pages of replies attached to them. I've read each one, and I'm still not completely sure which one of the guides I should use to root my awesome new phone.
Thanks for the help in advance.. I am learning a ton on these forums and can't wait to start trying out roms.

i'm just making sure it's the right root for the particular hboot. I'm still learning what to do about ROMs. I had a Huawei Ascend for Cricket before this that I had successfully rooted, but there weren't any real ROMs out for it. So I used the root access to get rid of the bloatware and get Barnacle with busybox and superuser. That's pretty much the only experience I have.
I just want to make sure that I don't brick my brand new phone hehe.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004

Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.
Hi
I bought an Evo on Nov 23rd and need to root it for wifi tethering.
I have been researching on the net and found a gazillion sites, videos and links for it, but not sure which one is really applicable in my case.
Also, based on my research on this forum, I found the following thre links that might wor, but not sure which is really applicable.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448

For your reference, the phone has HBOOT-2.02.0000 with S-on, Android version 2.2 and Software number 3.30.651.3.
Thanks
I was able to soft root my phone using z4root 1.3 (it has a permanent root option also). My wifi tethering app is installed but i am not able to connect to the network using it from my laptop.
I have an open question on the forum still on this so I am not sure this is the way to go but is an option.
Seems like z4root 1.3 does not work with HTC Evo.

Be very careful! I say that from experience. I have an Epic also that was super easy to root. But, I got the EVO the other day and have the same software as yours. Unrevoked root works with all EVO's except ours. And I bricked my EVO on a one-click method. Fortunetely it was so messed up that Sprint can't do anything with it except give me a new phone. I'm gonna leave root alone for awhile with this phone.
You can NOT root version 3.30, and you can NOT root using unrevoked3 if you are running Hboot 2.02
I mean you can root by going back to another version - but i couldnt even begin to tell you how to do all that...

Hold volume down and boot up into bootloader
Tell us what top two line on that white screen with skating androids says.
And post in q and a next time.
First of all this would belong in the question and answer forum. This is THE method to use. Looks like you will need access to another PC then.

yeah well you were following the right guide.
did you check your device manager while phone is plugged in to make sure drivers are all set?
maybe try the universal root by xHausx
he says it should work with 2.02 now.
just follow all instructions slowly. everyone has had success with the guide your first started to use.
let us know what you get. and always be very descriptive. Must explain everything in detail to get the best help.
Hey guys I was having some trouble with that too, I had rooted using unrevoked and unrooted with the s-on tool and a PC36IMG, I tried going back to root with the original method but the modified USB driver was already installed and unrevoked wouldn't work.
Don't ask me why but I accepted the OTA update and now trying to root with the method linked to above gives me an error at the last line of step 4, telling me rageagainstthecage cannot me found.
I was just wondering if there's any hope??? I'll take any root method you can suggest.
PS the root and unroot guides I used were from the droiddemos.com but evidently I cannot link to them until I reach 8 posts.
ive tried atleast 5+ different rooting methods but cant seem to get it.. i rooted my samsung moment easily as well as others but when it comes to this evo i cant do it.. i bricked it 2 times and to the point where i couldnt even flash the stock ruu anymore but luckily it was only 2 days since buying it so i was able to do a brand new swap and now i have my new evo #2 and havent touched it yet unless i got a fool proof rooting method.. Im not trying to go thru the bricking of this one to.. any input is thankful

How did you do it?
I had it rooted and had problems with a rom so I flashed a factory rom back on it and it updated to the GB OTA but I never turned the s-on. Of course that was before I knew we couldn't get a working root. I have tried everything possible I can think of to get it rooted again. This is why I said if need be I would send to a dev to see what they can do with it since it does have s-off.

That's like bragging that I can get into my apartment. Sure, I have a key to the door, which helps.
If you were S-OFF before GB, there's no problem. If you weren't S-OFF and you updated, there's no solution yet.
OK, searched the forums for a couple days now and have not seen what I thought were the correct steps. I am trying to get S-OFF on my Verizon DINC2. My HBOOT is 1.15.0000, and everything I find tells me it needs to be at 0.97.0000. I can find steps to take it from 0.98.0000 down, but nothing from 1.15.0000.
I'm sure by now you may have picked up that I'm a NOOB. Never rooted a phone before, but want to try on this one as I'm due for a new one in a few months.
Thanks for your help and understanding.
