[Q] How to root a new Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I bought an Evo on Nov 23rd and need to root it for wifi tethering.
I have been researching on the net and found a gazillion sites, videos and links for it, but not sure which one is really applicable in my case.
Also, based on my research on this forum, I found the following thre links that might wor, but not sure which is really applicable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
For your reference, the phone has HBOOT-2.02.0000 with S-on, Android version 2.2 and Software number 3.30.651.3.
Thanks

I was able to soft root my phone using z4root 1.3 (it has a permanent root option also). My wifi tethering app is installed but i am not able to connect to the network using it from my laptop.
I have an open question on the forum still on this so I am not sure this is the way to go but is an option.

Seems like z4root 1.3 does not work with HTC Evo.

Be very careful! I say that from experience. I have an Epic also that was super easy to root. But, I got the EVO the other day and have the same software as yours. Unrevoked root works with all EVO's except ours. And I bricked my EVO on a one-click method. Fortunetely it was so messed up that Sprint can't do anything with it except give me a new phone. I'm gonna leave root alone for awhile with this phone.

You can NOT root version 3.30, and you can NOT root using unrevoked3 if you are running Hboot 2.02
I mean you can root by going back to another version - but i couldnt even begin to tell you how to do all that...

I found this link on xda forums for HBoot 2.02: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Would this method work?
Let me know. If it doesn't, I might have to wait for some time to have some Android genius find out a way to root my Evo version.

The first post is the one you need.

[Q] Gonna take a dive and root my evo.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

I'll link you djrez's instructions when I get home but its really simple
Thanks a bunch! I'm sure this'll help other "newbies"

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

No problem! I'm glad it wasn't a waste of time for people! By the way, wifi tether works like a champ! not sure if I can post the how to for that on here or not, so I will leave it up to a senior/admin to post if it's allowed.
Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004
Build Number 3.30.651.3
Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

[q] easiest way to start with rooting.

Hello, I just got my Evo 4G today, and I'm interested in rooting the phone, it has the Android 2.2 OS on it, and I'm not new to this, I've jailbroken my iphone, and another phone, I can't remember the name.
There is plenty of guides on the wiki, but I'm uncertain which one I should be following due to there is many, could someone lead me to the simplest guide that I can use to root, and possibly flash the phone?
Thank you kindly!

What's your software number?
Okay so I've found out I'm on the 0004 Hardware rev, so whats the easist way to do this, and not break anything, and have access to a stock rom, (not a custom rom) but maybe one with root access enabled?
EDIT:
Software number: 3.30.651.3
Hardware Rev: 0004
EDIT 2: I kinda just wanna be able to delete the sprint **** off the phone like Nascar (SP?) and ****, and in order to do that you can only do it rooted so help please? lol

I don't think.... no I'm pretty sure that he can't use unrEVOked on this device. He has 004 hardware and the latest build which leads me to believe he has 2.02 hboot. Which won't work with unrEVOked. But I'm sure if he followed the post ↑ above mine he has it rooted already.

Do not use unrevoked, it will hose the new phones.
If you turn off your phone and hold vol down while turning it back on it will come up with a white screen and give a hBoot version at the top. That will determine what method you need to use. If it is 2.02 you'll have to use the method made up for that one, otherwise any of the other methods for Froyo should work fine.
Extract to a folder of your choice. I recommend the root of C:\ into a folder of your choice or on the desktop. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers) and USB debugging is on.
does anyone have the links to the drivers, and the unrevoked hboot drivers?
14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a custom rom cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.
do I NEED to flash a custom rom? or can I use the stock rom, while being rooted?
Bump, sorry for this..
is the unrevoked hboot drivers this?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
also where is the SDK link?
I'm excited to do this, but I don't want to mess up my phone, since I just got it yesterday, lol.
Thanks..

Thanks for this. I found a lot of useful information.
I just rooted my gf's 004 white evo using http://www.wackynoodle.com/hboot202-s_off-V71.zip
from this thread. However, the instructions from illogos in the quotes on page 121 of the same thread would probably make things easier. Make sure to follow all the steps. I have Myn's current warm 2.2 rom running on her 004 evo now and it's buttery smooth.

[Q] Rooting a friends Evo, Please comfirm this strategy.

I already have my Evo rooted, one of the newest ones, Hardware 0004, Hboot 2.02, but I want to root a friends Evo who has no technical know-how. I already have all the SDK software on my laptop and regularly make edits to my phone. I just don't want to mess hers up. Hers is older..
Hboot 0.97.0000
Radio 2.15.00.09.01
Hardware 0003 (with crappy screen. Wow what a difference next to mine, all washed out and a pinkish hue)
Lastest software updates via the phone menu as far as I know. Forgot to check that part, wont have that phone in my hands till tomorrow again.
Can I use this method since hers has an older Hboot than mine?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762&highlight=root
I used the like a boss guide for mine.. but like I said I have the 2.02 hboot. I don't know about trying the unrevoked method

don't root hers with the unrevoked3 its gaaaaaaaay she needs the leet original method. Use that guide by toastcfh like you said. I just did that and it will work easily!!!! I can help.
Just follow the instructions on toastcfh's post in the first link you posted on your first question.
Then you gotta do some updates on her new rom / kernel to test first and give her the best longing lastest battery powered phone ever! That I can help too with.

yeah well you were following the right guide.
did you check your device manager while phone is plugged in to make sure drivers are all set?
maybe try the universal root by xHausx
he says it should work with 2.02 now.
just follow all instructions slowly. everyone has had success with the guide your first started to use.
let us know what you get. and always be very descriptive. Must explain everything in detail to get the best help.
Hey guys I was having some trouble with that too, I had rooted using unrevoked and unrooted with the s-on tool and a PC36IMG, I tried going back to root with the original method but the modified USB driver was already installed and unrevoked wouldn't work.
Don't ask me why but I accepted the OTA update and now trying to root with the method linked to above gives me an error at the last line of step 4, telling me rageagainstthecage cannot me found.
I was just wondering if there's any hope??? I'll take any root method you can suggest.
PS the root and unroot guides I used were from the droiddemos.com but evidently I cannot link to them until I reach 8 posts.
ive tried atleast 5+ different rooting methods but cant seem to get it.. i rooted my samsung moment easily as well as others but when it comes to this evo i cant do it.. i bricked it 2 times and to the point where i couldnt even flash the stock ruu anymore but luckily it was only 2 days since buying it so i was able to do a brand new swap and now i have my new evo #2 and havent touched it yet unless i got a fool proof rooting method.. Im not trying to go thru the bricking of this one to.. any input is thankful

If your HBOOT version is 2.02 or 2.10, then no, unrevoked will not work.
From what I am reading... if you say you got your EVO from day 1, I assume that is June 4th, all EVOs from that date are from 0.87 HBOOT so yes, unrevoked would work for you.
Check your HBOOT version just in case.

I think what you want to know, is how to update to a 3.30.651.3 rom and keep root?
If that is what you are asking, then yes, you can look for one like in this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728
You can download it and follow the directions, its easy. You should already be rooted, so if you install a rooted rom you should be OK.
If you are still on 3.29, make sure that you have S-OFF and ran Unrevoked Forever.
BASICALLY YES I BOUGHT MY EVOS THE 1ST FRIDAY THEY CAME OUT JUNE 4TH I BELIEVE. IVE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO IT EXCEPTH DOWNLOAD UPDATES SENT BY SPRINT. I FPUND OUT ABOUT ROOTING FOR FREE WIFI. DOWNLOADED UNREVOKED. DOWNLOADED THE ANDROID DRIVERS I GUESS BC IM USING WINDOWS 7 I NEEDED THEM. PLUGGED MINE AND MY GFS PHONE IN AND BAM! UNREVOKED HAD ME ROOTED IN MINUTES. SO I START GETTING A LITTLE COCKY AND GET ON THIS FORUM AND SEE IM WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. IM TRYING MY BEST TO SOAK IN AS MUCH INFO BY READING ALOT OF THE INFO IN THE Q&A FORUMS. NOT EXZACTLY SURE WHAT FLASHING ROM IS NOT SURE WHAT A KERNEL IS. FROM READING WHAT EVERYONE ON HERE IS DOING IAM WAYYYY BEHIND THE EIGHTBALL LOL. SO WHATS A EASY WAY FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME TO ROOT THE NEW EVOS. WILL UNREVOKED WORK? ALSO WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND SOMEONE LIKE ME DO TO AN EVO THAT HASNT REALLY BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT UNREVOKED?

Ok...so you first got the EVO when it came out in June, rooted it, but then applied a Sprint OTA update and lost root?
I'm not entirely sure what you are really asking because if you already obtained root, why would you need to root it again?
No i havent lost root. My phone is rooted. My friends have the new evo with the 3.3 software. Before i tell em to drive up to baltimore from richmond i wanna make sure it will work. So this spec is his phone or yours? If this is his phone, then you can use unrevoked3 (I assume since the build is 3.29, the HBOOT is 0.97 or so).
No this is my phone
He just bought his from radioshack 4 days ago so im assuming he has all the newest software. Also thanks for explaining the difference in unrevoked 3 and forever on my other thread. Im assuming i need to save any info on my phone before running unrevoked forever. Sorry to be bouncing around so much but im just so anxious to learn so heres 2 questions
1) when flashing roms, is unrevoked 3 a tool i can use. Can i just click custom then select the rom i want to flash?
2) for my buddys phone, what is the simplest way to root his phone since unrevoked will not work. Im reading the tjread everyone is referring to as 'like a boss" but its not making much sense
1. I assume from you asking about unrevoked forever, you are still S-ON and trying to get S-OFF? When you ran unrevoked3, it should've installed a custom recovery (ClockworkMOD is what unrevoked uses I believe). That's where you flash unrevoked forever and any custom ROMs later (the files need to be on the root of your SDcard - meaning not in any folders).
To get to recovery: power off, then when you turn it back on, hold down VOL DOWN and POWER and that will put you into bootloader. It may attempt to locate PC36IMG.zip/etc files but you prob won't have them which is fine, after that, select Recovery and hit Power and you should be booting into recovery.
If you can, I would suggest doing a nandroid backup of your phone so in case anything does get messed up while flashing, you can restore back. To do this, go to backup or something like that (sorry, I use Amon_RA's recovery so the wording is most likely different). Once you are backed up, go to 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', and then pick the file you want to flash. After that, reboot and you should be good to go.
Some custom ROMs require you to do a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik-cache - wipe each one twice) before you flash, so to do that you go to recovery and choose the wipe option. Stuff like radios, kernels, themes, you only need to wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
2. As for your buddy's phone....I am not too familiar with the new EVO root methods but I think the "like a boss" edition which is now updated to "Yea, I'm On Top" edition seems to be the new way to root the new EVOs until unrevoked or someone else comes out with another way. You can check out these threads to get a better understand and post in them too if you have any questions and the guys with experience when those methods should be able to help. Sorry, I can't be of too much help here.
