I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Thanks! I was hoping that my post would bring about results or suggestions. I think I'm gonna hold off on Rooting until tomorrow night since it's already 3 am and I would prefer doing this with a fresh mind, haha. Thanks again. I'll make sure to post my success!

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004
Build Number 3.30.651.3
Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

Hey guys well i crashed the software on my old evo due to rooting lol. IM getting a new one shortly. What Im asking is a REALLY GOOD step by step guide, with the links to download the right files, to root the 2.2 stock froyo it comes with BUT ALSO nand-unlocking it while im rooting it. The reason im asking for this was I had a hard time flashing cyanogen mod 6 after i used the root method from djr3Z from the droid demos website (It was downgrading the stock 2.2 to stock 2.1, rooting 2.1 and then finally going to a rooted 2.2 with Amon Ra recovery) Please help me! Im a noob and i would really appreciate it. Thx in advance!
Nand wasn't unlocked fully with the method you used. Many people had that issue. You can either unlock nand and be done, or wait a few days for the latest unrevoked to come out.

If you followed regaw's complete tutorial, including unrevoked-forever, you unlocked your nand and have the ability to flash custom roms. I know because I did it and am currently running Fresh 3.2. I also made nandroid backups and boot between them.
You can't jump right in to Cyanogen because you're on the wrong hboot. Cyanogen requires hboot 76, and you're probably on 93 or similar from regaw's method. Boot phone holding volume down and check it out.
I can't post links, but you can search the forums for "ENG hboot 76" and probably get the right post on how to get hboot back. Also, I believe it may be easier to find the link in the actual Cyanogen forums.
Keep in mind this downgrades your PRI to 1.3 instead of 1.40. Find the fix for that in a different thread.
Good luck.

Ok thx for that. The only question is when i get my evo and its on stock 2.2 should i do the nand-unlock, will that also root the phone in the process?
By the time you get your phone unrevoked will be out, with unrevoked, you just do a couple of mouse clicks and your done.
Also, unlocking nand is different than rooting. You must be rooted first in order to unlock nand. Just wait for your phone first, unrevoked will make it easy and painless for you.

Unrevoked is a great tool that truly makes it easy. When i rooted without it, I lost everything. But unrevoked doesn't delete anything at all. Will the new one unlock and or will you still need forever and .76 boot img?

Sounds like you have the oldest version of 2.1 like they did a factory reset. No issue. Your phone is primed and ready for rooting. If you are going to run CM6, then I would suggest using Toast's method to root and nand unlock. This will give you the necessary eng hboot 0.76.2000 to run that ROM. Although you may want to do search through the forums for a means of unlocking nand without downgrading your PRI to 1.34_003 (current is 1.40_003). The eng-PC36IMG.zip in Toast's part 2 "How to unlock nand" will downgrade your PRI.

You are ready to rock n roll now.
First Step - Root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Second Step - Unlock Nand with Toastcfh .76 Eng Bootloader
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
Third Step - Get ROM Manager
Go to the android market and download ROM Manager. Once installed, open the app and have it flash a custom recovery for you, either clockworkmod or RA.
Have Fun.
So I'm looking into this unrEVOked thing, and it seems as though I could root my EVO just fine with it. However my HBOOT is 2.02 and my build number is 3.30.651.3 (this is the part that worried me, since my friend said that a EVO with the hardware version of 0004 and that build number won't be able to be rooted).
My question is basically is there any method of rooting that I could do with no worries? Somebody mentioned to me this method right here but I want to be certain I would be alright with that before I get started. The steps aren't the issue, I'm just trying to do my homework beforehand and be sure I'm ok.
the method you linked will work. unrevoked will not. pm me or gtalk [email protected] for help. i sitll havent gotten a hboot 2.02 person to give me enough time to let me help them root.
I have a 0004 hboot 2.02 device, and used that method. I had many issues during the middle of the process, but made it through using a microSD memory card reader to rename those pc36img.zip files...
Worked great!

Hey Dkdude36, I have questions along the same lines. For hboot 2.02, what other rooting options exist that DO NOT involve the use of Unrevoked's components. Looking through the download files, you'll notice both referenced methods (this and this ) use the file unrevoked-forever. So, what gives?
I am personally on the lookout for a rooting process (for hboot 2.02) that doesnt use that method. The reason being that it's a bit tedious to unroot.
unrevoked forever is different than unrevoked. the methods are completely valid. unrevoked-forever seems to be the key ingredient in rooting 2.02

So, if I currently have hboot 2.02, and I want to 'downgrade' to the eng build .76.2000, what are the steps? Root with whatever flavor of unrevoked-forever that works with my EVO (hardware 003), then flash the hboot .76.2000 downgrade zip? I don't even understand why I need hboot 2.02 versus the earlier builds. Besides it also appears the earlier root methods (1 or 2 clicks, Simple Root 1.47.651.1,etc detailed here will not work on 2.02.).
Got around to rooting the phone just fine using the method I linked. However I can't installed CM 6.1 RC at all. It gets stuck at the white EVO 4G splash screen. I'm assuming it's an issue with 0004 EVO's?

Just boot into hboot. Power off, and then hold power and volume down. You are now in hboot.
Hello, I just got my Evo 4G today, and I'm interested in rooting the phone, it has the Android 2.2 OS on it, and I'm not new to this, I've jailbroken my iphone, and another phone, I can't remember the name.

Do not use unrevoked, it will hose the new phones.
If you turn off your phone and hold vol down while turning it back on it will come up with a white screen and give a hBoot version at the top. That will determine what method you need to use. If it is 2.02 you'll have to use the method made up for that one, otherwise any of the other methods for Froyo should work fine.
Extract to a folder of your choice. I recommend the root of C:\ into a folder of your choice or on the desktop. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers) and USB debugging is on.
does anyone have the links to the drivers, and the unrevoked hboot drivers?
14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a custom rom cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.
do I NEED to flash a custom rom? or can I use the stock rom, while being rooted?
Bump, sorry for this..
is the unrevoked hboot drivers this?

also where is the SDK link?
I'm excited to do this, but I don't want to mess up my phone, since I just got it yesterday, lol.

Thanks for this. I found a lot of useful information.
I just rooted my gf's 004 white evo using http://www.wackynoodle.com/hboot202-s_off-V71.zip
from this thread. However, the instructions from illogos in the quotes on page 121 of the same thread would probably make things easier. Make sure to follow all the steps. I have Myn's current warm 2.2 rom running on her 004 evo now and it's buttery smooth.

First, yes you need S-Off to do a nandriod back up.
Second, you do not have permroot if you do not have S-Off. To get S-off there are several ways but I recommend using Rage+gfree found Here: in sub section "Rooting the Vision (G2/DZ) and DHD" This by far is the safest way to root.
But to let you make an informed decision there is also Visionary, now people in properly using this method, has produced a lot of soft bricks, I my self rooted this way, but again I still recommend using Rage+Gfree. But if you wish to still give Visionary a shot, Heres a link on how to properly use Visionary, make sure you follow everything to the "T". Read everything I have written in the post, do everything I have written in the post, then follow the videos exactly. But just to be clear, I am still recommending using the Rage+Gfree method. Happy Rooting.
ok joemm I tried the rage directions that you told me and I am not sure if it worked is there a way of knowing if it worked or not
Edit: nvm I can now get into CWM area which I could not get into before thanxs for the help and info.
What!!?? I know for a fact that you don't need s-off to do a nandroid. In fact, the ONLY thing s-off does that's of any significance is allow you to write to the system while it's booted - that's it. It's not some magic thing you absolutely need, just like having an ENG hboot isn't necessary to do 99% of the modifying you'll ever do.
This is a technical forum not some fire and brimstone 'do it or you'll die' sermon. Let's not construe fact and fiction/personal opinion on here. Just dish the facts unless otherwise rerquested.
As for gaining s-off, follow the wiki, push the files and you can literally copy and paste the commands if you need to (I suggest that so you don't screw up and brick your phone).

As for gaining s-off, follow the wiki, push the files and you can literally copy and paste the commands if you need to (I suggest that so you don't screw up and brick your phone).

LOL..........how does he flash a custom CWM recovery with out having a rooted phone? Remember he is using ClockWorkMod to do a back up?

What!!?? I know for a fact that you don't need s-off to do a nandroid. In fact, the ONLY thing s-off does that's of any significance is allow you to write to the system while it's booted - that's it. S-OFF lets you flash unsigned images and overrides version checking ,it isn't just about writing to the system while booted. I think you may be confusing defeating the NAND write protection with the actual S-OFF.
As far as I know you need S-OFF to flash a custom recovery, and you need CWM recovery to do a nandroid backup. I have never tried flash_image but I would be suprised if that let you flash a custom recovery while S-ON, because flash_image is just a regular binary.

True you can't flash a custom recovery and have it stick after a reboot but you can package it into an update.zip and flash it when you get into recovery. Aside from that you're phone performs the same. That's how we did everything on the MT slide before some one found a method to gain s-off. Of course there were no custom MTD partitions and we couldn't change the splash but that falls into the 1% of things the average 'rooter' will not attempt. The only reason we needed the ENG hboot was so that adb would catch our phone in recovery every time without running a loop.bat and praying to god. As far as NAND write protection, normally when a dev manages to break s-on they also break the write protection. At least that's what I've seen in phones with s-off. Are there any not like that?
Hopefully I didn't come off as an ass earlier, didn't mean it. I got 3 hours of sleep and I'm pulling a 13 hour day with a foot of fresh snow outside
I think you might be drawing too much comparison with earlier phones. The DZ and DHD have much stronger security than earlier phones. People familiar with experience of older HTC Android phones have often made incorrect assumptions about how things work on the DZ, some things are quite different (and typically much more complicated to unlock)

Hell yes! And I'm one of them!
Last night I put some Cyanogen 6.1 flavoured ROM on my Magic/Sapphire. It was so easy: like 2 years ago or so I flashed some S-OFF ENG hboot, put some nice custom recovery on the phone and there I went, peacefully since ever. Reason for flashing the 6.1 CM was me giving the fone to my GF so that I can pick up a brand new Desire Z.
I came here, wanted to quickly crack that thing to play around with it and I find some gFree, Visionary, adb push stuff blah blah blah (I know my way around adb, that's not the point), it seems to have become alot more difficult than back in the days, as pointed out by steviewevie.
So, anyone willing to *quickly* summarize what has changed in the last 12 months regarding "rooting", "cracking" and ROM-customizing HTC devices for me...? I'm still, uhm... well, I'm shocked and overwhelmed. In the store I thought: cool, 7pm, device mine, home by 7:30, rooted by 8, Gingerbread-flavour on it by 8:30-9pm, ROM customization (settings and such) from 9-10, sleepy time by 10:30pm. Nah, it's past 10:30 and I'm still trying to figure out what's what with the new devices...

Its become more difficult because device manufacturers have made it more difficult. The "official" means to root the Vision is posted on the Vision wiki page here at XDA.

Thanks for the answer. I got the thing cracked in the meantime. The device feels so much smoother without Sense... and Gingerbread is good for one's soul
I'm late on the bandwagon.. my first android phone, Evo4g running GB.
I've had it a few weeks now and also accepted the latest ota a week or two ago.
Hboot 2.16.0001, radio 2.15.00.0008, broadband 2.15.00.0808, kernel 2.6.35.10-g13578ee (or was it cc). Sw 4.53.651.1
what are my chances of rooting and putting on CM71? Base.d on the wiki, it looks like I'm out of luck, even with unrevoked. What about htcdev.net for obtaining s-off?
I'm also confused on how to get back to stock if I ever need to take the phone back (yes, I've read the readfirst doc), including getting rid of cwmod - back to 100% stock. Is there a way to backup my existing rom/kernel/?? and using that as opposed to an older img?
There's just too much info and old threads saying 'latest' to make it confusing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
As far as what mod to use, I'm anticipating cm71 basically because it looks about the most full featured and stable. I have no idea what 'sense' is other than being htc's launcher. I prefer goLauncherEx so if there's something that sense provides that my underprivileged mind doesn't know about feel free to enlighten me.
thanks tons!!
I second this question, I was given a HTC Evo 4g as a replacement phone from sprint after having 3 Epic 4g's and 2 Nexus S 4g's in 7 months. I would like to root this because it has so many unwanted apps.
Noob wants root? Noob should do some searching first. Answers to literally every question up there are already asked and answered 500 times.

If you have 4.53.651.1, then UnrEVOked should work... not sure on 4.54.651.1, which was the latest OTA security update package, though.
Have you even tried UnrEVOked, yet? Or HTCDEV.com? I would imaging that there is always a way...
ok first of all there are a lot of people here willing to help, but first you need to help yourself. do the research, and find out what method will work to root your phone. then read it at least 3 times. then when you start rooting your phone and get stuck people will be more willing to help. i personally rooted my phone a while ago so i have no idea as to what method would even work for you. second make sure you do a nand back up from your recovery when you get one. that will at least take you back to your stock rom, and to get back to s-on well like i said do the research and read read read. good luck and happy flashing

With latest ota, use revolutionary like a couple has posted. Unrevoked will not work on the gingerbread firmwares for the EVO. You need revolutionary.
It's simple and straightforward.

Thanks to all!
The issue was the overabundance of information and trying to weed out the non-current... not that I wasn't searching and reading.
I'm now up and going with synergy RLS1 (non-godmode)+chopsuey9.2.7+Amon RA Style Supersonic recovery 3.07.
Again, thanks for the assist!
right on glad you made it even if you were late to the party have fun and remember to make a back up and wipe wipe wipe happy flashing
