[Q] Rooting a friends Evo, Please comfirm this strategy. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I already have my Evo rooted, one of the newest ones, Hardware 0004, Hboot 2.02, but I want to root a friends Evo who has no technical know-how. I already have all the SDK software on my laptop and regularly make edits to my phone. I just don't want to mess hers up. Hers is older..
Hboot 0.97.0000
Radio 2.15.00.09.01
Hardware 0003 (with crappy screen. Wow what a difference next to mine, all washed out and a pinkish hue)
Lastest software updates via the phone menu as far as I know. Forgot to check that part, wont have that phone in my hands till tomorrow again.
Can I use this method since hers has an older Hboot than mine?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762&highlight=root
I used the like a boss guide for mine.. but like I said I have the 2.02 hboot. I don't know about trying the unrevoked method
EDIT:
This method looks even easier. Will it work with hers?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496

I rooted mine with unrEVOked3. It was all pretty easy.

don't root hers with the unrevoked3 its gaaaaaaaay she needs the leet original method. Use that guide by toastcfh like you said. I just did that and it will work easily!!!! I can help.
Just follow the instructions on toastcfh's post in the first link you posted on your first question.
Then you gotta do some updates on her new rom / kernel to test first and give her the best longing lastest battery powered phone ever! That I can help too with.

Need help with root

I just got a replacement evo and I updated it to 3.30.651.3 and my hardware ver. is 003..And i can not get root Please any help would be great ..thanks
i am ALWAYS open to helping people root. it seems the tutorial to do would be here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
the problem is, all the files are for 0004 hardware so it would screw up your 0003. better just sit tight until they release the 0003 ruu cracked, patched, and engineering files. once again, open to help people.
dk
Thank you i can wait i tell you running stock isnt bad my battery life is crazy long...
Just as a last check, you might want to search the threads to see if any of the methods work for 0003. I might recommend just waiting though because the other methods seem a little shotty. The one I linked makes perfect sense and sounds foolproof. I doubt htc could have thought out that loophole.
Yeah cool thanks for your help
What is the manufacture date of your phone did it come with 3.30?

I have hardware 0003, and the method you linked got me rooted. Took a couple attempts on a few of the steps, but end result is s-off, amon-ra recovery, still using hboot 2.02 however. I didn't see the need of downgrading hboot. Be careful when flashing roms though, as only htc kernels will allow the camera to work at the moment. (to the best of my knowledge). I'm more than happy to help, too, if you have any other questions.
Feel free to gtalk me or email me. [email protected]

the point of downgrading is to allow unsigned pc36img.zips, and to have fastboot commands. these can be used for major developing, or simply changing your splash screen. not much of a purpose, but a purpose.
edit
I realized you meant changing splash through adb, my fault. Good point about the fastboot, though. I haven't tried the .zips either. I may downgrade yet.
Sent from my HTC SuperSonic 4G using the XDA app.
Be careful when downgrading. You could be bricked. I would recommend not downgrading until you do something that requires it. How do you flash splash screens without adb?
Flashable zips through recovery. Shift has a thread around here somewhere I got the one I'm using atm.
Sent from my HTC SuperSonic 4G using the XDA app.
I didn't know that was possible. Well it makes sense because wimax, radio, pri, nv, and boot .img are all installable with some tricky coding through recovery. Why not the splash1 partition too...

[Q] Questions about rooting (HBOOT & Build)

So I'm looking into this unrEVOked thing, and it seems as though I could root my EVO just fine with it. However my HBOOT is 2.02 and my build number is 3.30.651.3 (this is the part that worried me, since my friend said that a EVO with the hardware version of 0004 and that build number won't be able to be rooted).
My question is basically is there any method of rooting that I could do with no worries? Somebody mentioned to me this method right here but I want to be certain I would be alright with that before I get started. The steps aren't the issue, I'm just trying to do my homework beforehand and be sure I'm ok.
the method you linked will work. unrevoked will not. pm me or gtalk [email protected] for help. i sitll havent gotten a hboot 2.02 person to give me enough time to let me help them root.
I have a 0004 hboot 2.02 device, and used that method. I had many issues during the middle of the process, but made it through using a microSD memory card reader to rename those pc36img.zip files...
Worked great!

Hey Dkdude36, I have questions along the same lines. For hboot 2.02, what other rooting options exist that DO NOT involve the use of Unrevoked's components. Looking through the download files, you'll notice both referenced methods (this and this ) use the file unrevoked-forever. So, what gives?
I am personally on the lookout for a rooting process (for hboot 2.02) that doesnt use that method. The reason being that it's a bit tedious to unroot.
unrevoked forever is different than unrevoked. the methods are completely valid. unrevoked-forever seems to be the key ingredient in rooting 2.02

So, if I currently have hboot 2.02, and I want to 'downgrade' to the eng build .76.2000, what are the steps? Root with whatever flavor of unrevoked-forever that works with my EVO (hardware 003), then flash the hboot .76.2000 downgrade zip? I don't even understand why I need hboot 2.02 versus the earlier builds. Besides it also appears the earlier root methods (1 or 2 clicks, Simple Root 1.47.651.1,etc detailed here will not work on 2.02.).
Got around to rooting the phone just fine using the method I linked. However I can't installed CM 6.1 RC at all. It gets stuck at the white EVO 4G splash screen. I'm assuming it's an issue with 0004 EVO's?

I've been trying to figure this out for a few days now... Apparently it's the kernel. A guy in the official forum said he used the toast test kernel 2.6.35 and everything works, including the camera! I'm just having a hard time finding it!

I don't know if that's going to happen anytime soon. I just installed the lastest nightly with snap's 7.6 cfs kernel. Everything works, and I'm super happy! Still use Frost, Fresh, MIUI, Myn's Warm, and everything else too...
tho this may seem like a dumb question i just got my evo over the weekend and i havent stumbled upon the answer yet....how do you know what hboot you have? i see that i have hardware 004 and i see that i have the newest build number i just not sure where or how to tell the Hboot version. Any ideas? Thanks.
Just boot into hboot. Power off, and then hold power and volume down. You are now in hboot.

[q] brand new evo replacement in mail, best way to root

Hey guys, im an older rooter using the more complicated but still easy 1.47 toast method back in the day, my volume buttons were broken so i called up sprint and got a replacement. I just got it in the mail today and it is brand new. The hboot is 0.97 and its a 0003 hardware model, YES lol... Whats the easiest way to root this bad boy and get my AVA v10 back on again...Also, ALLLLLLLL those nandroid back ups i have on my 16gb microsd card, are they no good because they are for my other phone, right, sounds stupid but you never know. My guess is no...thanks guys
also clockwork or amon, i always used amon until my volume keys broke, thenmy only option was clockwork
anyone guys, sorry to bug a lot but i wanna root before i go to work at 10
Im sure you can do it the same as before with toasts root or unrevoked should still work as well. Only phones having difficulty are hardware 004 with hboot 2.02

lol i didnt see your response unitl now, i just id unrevoked, lmao it you mess that up your retarded, much easier than the already easy toast method, WOW
unrevoked still works with .97 hboot. it is easier than simpleroot. 1-click
i have hardware ver.0003 build # 3.30.651.3 and i tried to do unrevoked and it locks up on the 4g start screen any help would be great
yep thats the new hboot alright. 3.30 has the deadly 2.02.
@dkdude36
caught wind ur workin on a 3 click root for the 2.02, hows that going.
slowly working out the bugs. i only have 2 testers. unrooted people with macs are hard to come by. that is why i'm (so annoyingly) asking in every thread. after the mac one is finished, i will transcode to pc. then i should get more testers... thanks for asking

Did you get the 3.30.651.3 update OTA? I thought this was only for 004 hardware to update camera? I never got this on my 003 hardware. Just asking because I would love to get this update OTA and then load the cool ROM's made for this update. I am still running ROM's for this update on my 3.29 build, but I would love to see if this OTA would help improve my battery life on these ROM's.
I just got an Evo on 11-22 with hardware version 003. I've been getting asked to update to 3.30.651.3 since last weekend. I installed it this morning, but wasn't sure what it'd do. If I got it, maybe you'll get it soon.
Now back to scowering this forum on how to root with HBoot 2.02 S-on
Hah no all the guides are how to turn s-off so you need to start with s-on. Use the like a boss method. Easy.

[q] easiest way to start with rooting.

Hello, I just got my Evo 4G today, and I'm interested in rooting the phone, it has the Android 2.2 OS on it, and I'm not new to this, I've jailbroken my iphone, and another phone, I can't remember the name.
There is plenty of guides on the wiki, but I'm uncertain which one I should be following due to there is many, could someone lead me to the simplest guide that I can use to root, and possibly flash the phone?
Thank you kindly!

What's your software number?
Okay so I've found out I'm on the 0004 Hardware rev, so whats the easist way to do this, and not break anything, and have access to a stock rom, (not a custom rom) but maybe one with root access enabled?
EDIT:
Software number: 3.30.651.3
Hardware Rev: 0004
EDIT 2: I kinda just wanna be able to delete the sprint **** off the phone like Nascar (SP?) and ****, and in order to do that you can only do it rooted so help please? lol

I don't think.... no I'm pretty sure that he can't use unrEVOked on this device. He has 004 hardware and the latest build which leads me to believe he has 2.02 hboot. Which won't work with unrEVOked. But I'm sure if he followed the post ↑ above mine he has it rooted already.

Do not use unrevoked, it will hose the new phones.
If you turn off your phone and hold vol down while turning it back on it will come up with a white screen and give a hBoot version at the top. That will determine what method you need to use. If it is 2.02 you'll have to use the method made up for that one, otherwise any of the other methods for Froyo should work fine.
Extract to a folder of your choice. I recommend the root of C:\ into a folder of your choice or on the desktop. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers) and USB debugging is on.
does anyone have the links to the drivers, and the unrevoked hboot drivers?
14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a custom rom cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.
do I NEED to flash a custom rom? or can I use the stock rom, while being rooted?
Bump, sorry for this..
is the unrevoked hboot drivers this?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
also where is the SDK link?
I'm excited to do this, but I don't want to mess up my phone, since I just got it yesterday, lol.
Thanks..

Thanks for this. I found a lot of useful information.
I just rooted my gf's 004 white evo using http://www.wackynoodle.com/hboot202-s_off-V71.zip
from this thread. However, the instructions from illogos in the quotes on page 121 of the same thread would probably make things easier. Make sure to follow all the steps. I have Myn's current warm 2.2 rom running on her 004 evo now and it's buttery smooth.

Someone help...will unrevoked work for 3.3?

I downloaded unrevoked 3 ive rooted mine and my girlfriends phone with no issues. However we have had our evos since the 1st day they came out. Will unrevoked work for 3.3 on the evo? If not is there a simple way someone who isnt to good with computers like myself can root these phones?

If your HBOOT version is 2.02 or 2.10, then no, unrevoked will not work.
From what I am reading... if you say you got your EVO from day 1, I assume that is June 4th, all EVOs from that date are from 0.87 HBOOT so yes, unrevoked would work for you.
Check your HBOOT version just in case.

I think what you want to know, is how to update to a 3.30.651.3 rom and keep root?
If that is what you are asking, then yes, you can look for one like in this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836728
You can download it and follow the directions, its easy. You should already be rooted, so if you install a rooted rom you should be OK.
If you are still on 3.29, make sure that you have S-OFF and ran Unrevoked Forever.
BASICALLY YES I BOUGHT MY EVOS THE 1ST FRIDAY THEY CAME OUT JUNE 4TH I BELIEVE. IVE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO IT EXCEPTH DOWNLOAD UPDATES SENT BY SPRINT. I FPUND OUT ABOUT ROOTING FOR FREE WIFI. DOWNLOADED UNREVOKED. DOWNLOADED THE ANDROID DRIVERS I GUESS BC IM USING WINDOWS 7 I NEEDED THEM. PLUGGED MINE AND MY GFS PHONE IN AND BAM! UNREVOKED HAD ME ROOTED IN MINUTES. SO I START GETTING A LITTLE COCKY AND GET ON THIS FORUM AND SEE IM WAY OUT OF MY LEAGUE. IM TRYING MY BEST TO SOAK IN AS MUCH INFO BY READING ALOT OF THE INFO IN THE Q&A FORUMS. NOT EXZACTLY SURE WHAT FLASHING ROM IS NOT SURE WHAT A KERNEL IS. FROM READING WHAT EVERYONE ON HERE IS DOING IAM WAYYYY BEHIND THE EIGHTBALL LOL. SO WHATS A EASY WAY FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME TO ROOT THE NEW EVOS. WILL UNREVOKED WORK? ALSO WHAT DO YOU RECCOMEND SOMEONE LIKE ME DO TO AN EVO THAT HASNT REALLY BEEN MODIFIED EXCEPT UNREVOKED?

So this spec is his phone or yours? If this is his phone, then you can use unrevoked3 (I assume since the build is 3.29, the HBOOT is 0.97 or so).
No this is my phone
He just bought his from radioshack 4 days ago so im assuming he has all the newest software. Also thanks for explaining the difference in unrevoked 3 and forever on my other thread. Im assuming i need to save any info on my phone before running unrevoked forever. Sorry to be bouncing around so much but im just so anxious to learn so heres 2 questions
1) when flashing roms, is unrevoked 3 a tool i can use. Can i just click custom then select the rom i want to flash?
2) for my buddys phone, what is the simplest way to root his phone since unrevoked will not work. Im reading the tjread everyone is referring to as 'like a boss" but its not making much sense
1. I assume from you asking about unrevoked forever, you are still S-ON and trying to get S-OFF? When you ran unrevoked3, it should've installed a custom recovery (ClockworkMOD is what unrevoked uses I believe). That's where you flash unrevoked forever and any custom ROMs later (the files need to be on the root of your SDcard - meaning not in any folders).
To get to recovery: power off, then when you turn it back on, hold down VOL DOWN and POWER and that will put you into bootloader. It may attempt to locate PC36IMG.zip/etc files but you prob won't have them which is fine, after that, select Recovery and hit Power and you should be booting into recovery.
If you can, I would suggest doing a nandroid backup of your phone so in case anything does get messed up while flashing, you can restore back. To do this, go to backup or something like that (sorry, I use Amon_RA's recovery so the wording is most likely different). Once you are backed up, go to 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from sdcard', and then pick the file you want to flash. After that, reboot and you should be good to go.
Some custom ROMs require you to do a full wipe (data/cache/dalvik-cache - wipe each one twice) before you flash, so to do that you go to recovery and choose the wipe option. Stuff like radios, kernels, themes, you only need to wipe the cache and dalvik-cache.
2. As for your buddy's phone....I am not too familiar with the new EVO root methods but I think the "like a boss" edition which is now updated to "Yea, I'm On Top" edition seems to be the new way to root the new EVOs until unrevoked or someone else comes out with another way. You can check out these threads to get a better understand and post in them too if you have any questions and the guys with experience when those methods should be able to help. Sorry, I can't be of too much help here.
