[Q] Anyone noticed defects in the polycarbonate casing? - HTC One X

I noticed today that just above the bottom end of the volume rocker, between that and where the screen sits, there was a slight, sharp bump in the polycarbonate. I have managed to smooth it out some what by gently shaving it down with a sharp blade.
So i was wondering, Has anyone else noticed any defects in the casing. Things like sharp ridges, bumps or burr's?

I've not noticed anything on my phone but somebody else on this forum did have one where there was a very thin crack or molding line on one of the corners. They had it replaced IIRC.

My first one had a couple of "air bubbles" in the casing. They were very small. There was also a dark dot on the white surface on the back. I didn't swap the unit out for this..it had other problems.
The one I have now seems to be free of defects. But I did read other reports with similar things.
Perfection....not!

OK, so I'm not the only one. I guess i do have the plus side of i didn't get a white one so if there is any marks on the casing they won't show up as easily.

I have a sharp bump/ imperfection on right below the microUSB slot. Good thing its virtually invisible unless you look for it.

I only noticed the one i had because my finger brsuhed over it. I would guess it's a burr from the molding process but then it would be in the same place on every device. Although if there are different molds for the grey/black and white ones then it may just be what i suspect.
As i said in an earlier post, you can get rid of it by using a sharp blade and running of it the bump gently a couple of times to shave it down

I would but it doesn't show up so there isn't much point.

Wont it show up in proper lightning angle?
I have on the back a small line which you can see only when holding the phone in proper lightning angle. It's hard to see, I had the phone for 15 days but I just noticed it today.

It's on the opposite side to the dock pins.

Nope. I was taking some shots of it today for a review i've done for installornot.com (link in my sig) and it just didn't show up.
But i can describe it as left over from plastic from an injection moulding process. You know how when plastic is injection moulded it leaves a sort of spike where the plastic was injected into the mould. It was exactly like that.

Ah! I've got that too plus the one in the opposite side of the dock I was explaining in the previous post.
Has any one found the same problem, the line on the back?
EDIT: I think it's the borders of the battery because I can see similar lines in proper lightning around the dock pins.

I've found two small defects on the polycarbonate body: one near the 3.5mm jack plug, like a small imperfection such as if the body was hit by something thin like a blade, and another one almost invisible on the left side.. Oh, there is also a very little gray dot on the bottom, but this is really invisible to the most people

The moulding of these cases is really not all that precise but also partly due to the fact that the casing is heated to "glue" bits of plastic and components to the inside back of the case.
I have seen on the white version if you hold it under a spot light and look along its length so you can clearly see the matte mottled effect on the back...then slowly tip the phone back and forth and you will see two horizontal lines running left to right. One a bit above the HTC logo, and one near the speaker grill. It roughly conforms to where the battery is. I also notice that for the line above the HTC logo, towards the right, the moulding dips in ever so slightly. ONce again looking at the inside back, there is some kind of component fixed there. So the cases are just not that precise I'm afraid. Check some of the teardown pictures so you can see the inside of the back casing and you will understand what I mean. It is not just a shell, but an intricate moulding of internal bits as well.
When I first noticed this I was worried if the polycarbonate case was melting due to the heat in the phone. But I googled and found that polycarbonate doesn't start becoming soft until at least 130 degrees C, so it isn't going to be melting!

Your post made me feel better now

What's the deal with the blue tab

My last two refurbed DROIDs and my DROID2 have had the blue application tab for the screen glider sticker left on. Why is this? Ive just been getting a sharp knife and cutting them off. Is moto just getting lazy with all their device success?

The blue tab is to allow you to easily pull off the plastic sticker on the back of the screen; they put the plastic there for shipping and packing. Since you cut off the blue tab, it is harder to pull it off; though, the plastic sticker won't hurt the phone, so no big deal either way.
i left it on to keep the slide tight
My initial DROID 1s all had that sticker. Not sure how much it makes the slider tighter by, but it certainly does it's job eliminating metal on metal friction. Like a lubricating / pressure sticker. I don't think its supposed to be removed at all.

it IS supposed to be removed and it's not providing the "lube" effect that you're noticing. check back to a few sites that have actually dismantled a DROID. the sliding mechanism is where the two slots are on the back of the screen.
there are only two objects sliding against the plastic:
the locking mechanism
and the data ribbon
the backing is meant to be removed and provides no protection or benefit.
I'd like to see some form of proof because I can easily argue this.
There are very clearly on both the droid2 and droid1 two pair of wear marks right across this sticker. Plus the last refurb droid I got has the sticker with no blue tab.

i've replaced my backing with a vinyl sticker. the two wear marks are the spring locks that keep your keyboard closed. nothing else. the D2 is constructed identical to the D1 in that regard.
FWIW,
Every single time I have removed the sticker on the back, I ran into two things. Number one, it leaves it sticky. Number two, it makes it near impossible to open the phone quickly. Maybe cleaning it etc.. would fix that problem, but i'd rather just leave it alone.
I've seen a few phones with blue tab stickers, some with two pieces of black tape covering the area.

Yeah that thing isn't supposed to be there.
My Droid and Droid 2 were just as tight after taking it off... and 6 months later (well just got the Droid 2 so just the Droid on that part )
I actually think they are supposed to be there. I have two pieces of tape and this is my fourth droid 2. The first one without the tape actually had the sliding mechanism leave marks on the backing of the phone where it slides up and down and is hideous. The tape reduces the contact with the back and" absorbs " some of the blow. Im glad I got the two pieces of tape instead of the blue lining because its more pleasing to the eye.
Also it seems more snug and smoother with the tape.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Have any of you EVER purchased ANYTHING electronic? The pieces of plastic with the blue tabs are just there for protection from scratches by anyone OTHER than the customer. The blue tab is there so you can pull that TEMPORARY plastic piece off.
Its the same as that plastic thats on the main screen (you know the one that you probably pulled off?) that tells you what each of the little buttons do.
This is the most pointless topic ever, Lol.
Just compared to my old droid 2. The droid 2 has scratches where the sliding mechanism is and my new droid 2 which I have had for a couple months does not have any scratches as I have left the blue tape still there.
LOL...the blue tab is there so you can pull the plastic off. seriously?..is this topic really real?

if you guys think that the tape is really making that big of a difference, buy a vinyl from here:
http://www.grfxpstore.com/store/search/results?search_query=droid
that tape is made to come off, why do you think it bubbles up? it's not meant to be permanent and it's NOT the sliding mechanism leaving marks, it's the LOCKING mechanism. there are two little tabs that rest in slots at the top of the screen when the keyboard is closed, to help keep the screen from opening (although it does a piss-poor job). you can clearly see the path (scratches) from those tabs leading right to the slots at the top.
there are x-rays and tear-downs of the DROID 1 (same design/functionality as the 2). the sliding mechanism is located in the slots on the edge of teh screen.

My screen is now Rocking, Worn Pads?

Hey guys
So I have had my Z for 2 weeks and love it for the most part…faster and a crap load more enjoyable than the X10 it replaced. I am having some hardware issues however and was curious if I am alone on this one or others have had the same issue.
The hinge has become pretty loose now and the phone flops open regardless of what side I hold it from but in reality that is somewhat moot as who holds their phone from just one side lol?
The real issue I am having recently is the 6 little rubber stop pads on the underside of the screen’s left side/edge. Now there are 2 thicker rectangular stop pads on the right side’s corners adhered to the phones main body and the 6 little rubber pads on the left are attached to the screen and are there to compensate for the opposite rectangular pads so that the phone has both a buffer and a balance between sides so it sits flush, quiet, and secure.
Well somehow or for some reason those little 6 in a row rectangular pads have either pushed in too far to their respective channel or they have flattened via not regained their density/thickness as now they are flush with the screen’s underside and as a result leave a gap. So when I push, even lightly, on the center to left of the screen is makes a physical and audible click as it teeters down to touch the keyboard underneath and the right side compensates by lifting up and off the 2 corner rubber pads. Essentially the phones center area has become a fulcrum and I am sure that is not healthy on the hinge.
Has anyone else had this odd but irritating issue with theirs or am I alone here?
Perhaps I can try to find a thicker pad I can cut up to replace the strip of 6
I am alone in this one hey?
Lame...technology and I just don't mix!

No sir I'm on with you on this one. I started a thread about the annoying teeter or the screen a few weeks ago, and alot of people have it. I dont think its due to the pads, but more on the face of how the hinge is designed. It makes it so the screen doesn't sit flat enough. I know that they wanted to make the htc vision slim, but it caused some problems.

Interesting!
Thicker pads would remedy it while closed but once opened the thicker pads would not allow the screen to sit flush at the top of the keyboard
yeah, and honestly it hinders the device greatly because its so annoying. Oh well. Its okay! Still a great Phoenix.

well there's some guy who came up with a DIY fix on the dev section (I think) requires a lot of disassembly but looks worth it. I'd try it myself if I had all the right screw bits.

Cleaning the HTC One X

Hi!
I'm an owner of the HTC One X and I'm also a clean freak!
I noticed that the back marks really easily and the only way of cleaning it I have found so far is to use window cleaner, but I'm worried it will damage the material. Does anybody have any ideas?
Also, dust and dirt get into the gaps between the screen and the bezel, as well as inside the front facing camera. Once again, any ideas?
I'd be happy to hear any suggestions or any other troubles people have had cleaning it.
Thank you!

I used some post-it notes and carefully cleaned out the dust. If anything gets stick in the speaker holes then you can use the sticky part of a post-it to remove it.
Don't go nuts though and really jam in the paper as you might get it stuck then tear it or you may push dust further into the phone.
There is a paper tape. It is very good suction dust >>> People still use it to suck the dust particles remaining on the screen before applying the protective sheet.
I think the measures are very good so you can remove dust in crevices on your device.
Thanks, it works!
The problem is I used a pin before and I think I've pushed a lot in too far.
I guess I messed up.

I have been using "Pledge clean and dust multi-surface Original" for a couple of years to clean my notebook including the screen and and other electronics including my mobile phones it works great, also it cheap to buy, just make sure you spay a small amount onto a cloth and not on the item to be cleaned.
It says it for metal, electronic, glass and wood on the can.

You could test it by spraying some on an old junk CD/DVD that you don't want. The One X case is polycarbonate and so are CDs/DVDs. The exact recipe of polycarbonate isn't going to be the same but if the cleaner damages the CD/DVD then it isn't going to be a good idea to try it on the One X.
for daily cleaning the DHD official case with microfiber internals is doing wonders
sadly a little bit of the phone remains out of it like 5-10%
I got the white one x and typically use just water and microfiber cloth. If water doesn't do the trick I use eye glass solution. Seems to work fine.

The only time I have noticed it got dirty was the first time taking it into work, once it 'self cleaned' it has never had dirt smudges on it since ( not from memory anyway), strange I know, I'm not mad...
OP, Google a product called Cyber Clean. It's similar to silly puddy. You smear it on your phone. Once you remove the goo, it picks up most of the hard to reach dust particles. You can get it at most computer stores.

I was using some liquid eyeglass cleaner on my screen and some must have leaked in to the display. A dark grey blob started from the left of the display and gradually began moving toward the center, shrinking as it made its way across the screen. It ended up disappearing overnight and there's no sign that it was ever there. Moral of the story? 1) Be careful with liquid cleaners and 2) the display's not entirely or well sealed.

Noobish guide -Turning Black T989 into white with white battery door and vinyl decal

This with reference with other threads talking about changing colours:
such as minotauri's thread so check his thread out too.
Purpose of this thread
Just wanted to share my pics (at Bottom) and helpful tips for any first time doers to customizing...or have a place where you can ask questions some noobs might think are stupid but it's cool that what this is for
Obviously i'm not responsable for anything that YOU do TO YOUR phone ...just a disclaimer just incase...obviously this is not rocket science but better safe ...and OBviously Not responsible for the Sellers on ebay...and what they do. Your actions are your own...thanks now that's clear ...we move on.
Ok so i had a black t989d samsung galaxy S II from telus
I bought a white vinyl decal and a white battery door of ebay.
Ebay links of the ones i bought (links may expire over time)
White Door : http://www.ebay.ca/itm/OEM-BATTERY-...785829?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item35b9c24ee5
White vinyl decal (basically like a sticker but it will not leave marks or glue on you screen so it's safe)
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/White-Vinyl-...495791?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item19cd79d3ef
Tips :to applying the vinly on the front
i would recommend buying 2 vinyls just to be safe or mess up sticking it properly...the stickness is best the first time/ second time
Clean your phone first -microfibre clothes are best...like those tiny cloth sheets that comes with sunglasses
I say second time only if you didn't press down firmly on it to make it stick if you just gentle drop on using mainly the weight of the sticker itself it cool to remove it and re-adjust 2 maybe 3 times
Obviously remove the holes for the camera and hearing speaker
Use the bezel, the silver frame that goes around the sides of your phone to guide yourself to being straight
APPLYING:
The way i apply it is holding the top Thick / fat part (front facing camera ) on edges (so it doesn't stick to my fingers) with first finger and thumb rougly around the centre same thing with the bottom part with the 4 android buttons (both hands being above the sticky part not below)
then use my middle fingers to push the lines along the frame to make them come straight....more importantly trying to line up the bottom so the lights light up the drawings on the stick for the 4 button it won't come perfect which is ok but the light should be really close to it if you line up the bottom with the silver frame
Note for the camera part there's an outline sticker that goes around the camera piece as well ...for that remove the battery door is makes it easier
What my black phone looks like after:
Front and back image - Pic 1 and 2
Battery door / camera piece can be seen- Pic 3
LED light 4 buttons - Pic 4
DON't forget to HIT the THANKS button (thumbs up) if you found this helpful

Umm sure but the screen protector should ideally, either cover the entire front including the top, like around the front camera etc...or be the same size or smaller then the rectangle that fits inside the frame of the white vinyl ...only because it will have a weird little raised outline underneath of the protector...if you don't mind that then yeah should be fine...hopefully that makes sense what i said and it's not confusing LOL (PS unfortuantely it doesn't come a protector for the screen)
an alternative...just an opinion ... would be you could get another screen protector (i know a lil more costly) then remove the old one...place the white vinyl on the phone take the new protector (without pealing the back thingy that protectors the stickness) place on top of the phone trace with a marker (on the side that peals away of course)cut the outline with an exacto (X-acto) knife *after tracing, take it of the phone to use the exacto lol just saying to be safe...never know people may try exacto on top of their phone LOL *
Hope that helps...feel free to ask any other questions

yeahh that is a bit tricky but if you look closely i'm not exactly on the light i'm slightly off ...it's nearly impossible to get it dead on 100% but if the light falls under to light up the printed button it should be good enough....i actually mainly focused on the framing the whole as straight as possible using the bezel (silver frame of the phone) as the guide...the button should line up roughly 95% if you get it straight frame on frame... if it helps my top corners both left and right have a lil black space showing (around the curves) you can't even see it really....it cuz i focused on making sure my front camera and senors were not covered and then lined everything up downwards.....hopefully this makes some sense...LOL

I know a bit of a Necro on this thread but I thought I would share my experience since I recently did 2 repairs on N5s (one Black one Red). The 2 LCD+Frames I bought from 2 different sellers had the speaker grill sunk in a bit on the front like the glass is thicker. Also on the Red one the grill was sort of a Metallic Red as opposed to the solid Plastic BRIGHT RED on the original. As for issues I ran into the Power button hole being off causing the button to get stuck and not reset fully. It'll be sunk in after pressing it the first time and be slightly raised from the frame. On the 1st one I had to do the "Button Rattle Fix Mod" to get it to seat repeatedly but that still wasn't quite right. On the Red one I fixed I had the same issue with the Power Button and I figured out what was causing the issue. It's actually 2 things: the opening height was just a slight bit smaller than the button itself and caused it to stick in the pressed position and also the seat was raised causing the button to become dislocated in an angular position. Once I figured this out I shave a very TINY fraction of the plastic away from those effected areas and BAM it works like it was an OEM one. As for the Grill I don't know how to fix that other than lifting the Glass from the Frame and I seriously don't want to do that.
I have the Black one (The 1st one I did coming back to me so I'll see if I can post a Vid of the effected areas.

Glad you got it fixed. As for the Power button Yeah that is the same issue I was having. See if you can trim a very tiny amount off the long edges of the hole. That should take care of it. I think it's a common manufacturing defect on the generic ones. Even if you got it from the UK chances are they got a bulk amount from China and just resell them. My black one I ordered was that way as the seller was definitely in the US. But both had the same problems.
Where did u get it from? Link and price if possible please. And was there black available?
