Okay so I got my Epic at release, so one year ago tomorrow.
Now I went to check and see if I'm eligible for an upgrade and the site tells me this:
"Save $75 on a new phone in 1 day(s) on 09/01/2011 or save $150 on 07/01/2012."
Now does this mean $75 off of the FULL price of a phone or off of the new activation/ new upgrade price?
Thanks guys.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
that would be $75 off FULL retail price.. unless you're a Gold premier member..
I'm not sure if i am to be honest lol.
So you don't get an upgrade until your two years is up on this contract unless your a gold premier member?
Rubbish!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yup, standard cell company contract. 2yrs till you qualify to reup your contract and get new contract pricing on a phone. (unless you're Gold with sprint then it's every 12 months or so)
Yup there was a big fuss about it in march (or april idk) that changed everyones premeire status to silver that didn't meet special requirements like being with sprint for ten years or have a really high monthly bill. I called up sprint to demand my upgrade back when best buy was giving epics away for free on upgrade so after an hour and a day of waiting I got my free epic. I dont think they are as lenient now but you can try
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Yeah I remember that fuss. Haha, glad to hear you got one free. Spent $199 on mine ;P
I've got two phones on my plan but its only $139 without addons like 4g so I might just upgrade to a plan that's $169 and get gold, wait the 3 month requirement than upgrade.
That should work, no?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Another option
at 14 months you should be able to call and pay 75$ and they will reset your account so you can take advantage of the sale prices of having a full upgrade. It's the buy up program or something like that.
I've been with Sprint for 11 years and I'm not considered "gold"
I'm a long customer of Sprint, and learned today while trying to get the S3 that there's an upgrade fee, so I backed out. I've never paid an upgrade fee before....when did Sprint start charging this?
Also, they messed up my eligability now, show now I show back in a contact until October. Where can I see what my eligability was before they touched my account??
They have always had it...unless you do it online

They never always had an upgrade fee. I've gotten phones from them without an upgrade fee. Try going to an other store like Walmart or best buy or somewhere else. Some stores don't change an upgrade fee.
By the way, by upgrade fee, I mean activation fee.
I work at a Sprint store and Sprint for years had an upgrade fee. For years it was $18, until last year when the iPhone came to Sprint and it was raised to $36. The only way to avoid the fee was to upgrade online like bootny said (or via telesales by doing some haggling). You may not have noticed it but is been in place for a long time.
Try calling them. If you happen to be a long time customer and have some phone skills just doing some talking could get the fee waived, it worked for me, they removed the $36 from by bill.
All carriers charge them and have for several years now. The fee used to be just $18 but recently changed to $36. In addition, if you have discount on your account for who you work for, those discounts sometimes allowed for the waiving of the fee but all discounts have been reworked over the past year and there are only a few left that still waive it. 3rd party retailers generally charge it and dont mention it or sometimes have promotions were they waive it. Sprint.com will waive it on occasion as well but when in a retail store it is always charged and comes on your next bill.
Just got a Brand New GS3 for $.99 with ATT
AT&T has matched Sam's Galaxy S3 BF price of .96 and let me upgrade 2 weeks early. I can provide proof if you need it, I have the email confirmation. This totally beats waiting in those black friday lines. They also said that I can call back when i get my bill and they will remove the 36$ activation fee
I just called at&t and asked them if they could override the upgrade date to make it 2 weeks earlier to take advantage of sam's offer on black friday. But they said that they could not do it, but they could price match it. Now, I am getting the GS3 2 weeks before black friday at the black friday sam's club price without having to wait in those ridiculous lines!
Thanks, I will try this tomorrow

Did you ask to speak to someone in a particular department (retentions, etc) or did you just start with the person who answered when you called? I want to be sure I direct the request to the same place so I can get this deal too.
Thanks!
damn. i paid full subsidized price for my wife and mine. baaaaah. this was almost 2 months ago though, so there ain't no way i'm gettin' anything back. thankfully, i sold my unlocked iphone 4 for $300 to help offset the costs.

Woohoo! I just called AT&T and they refunded me the price for the Gs3 I purchased a week ago. Sweet! Thanks for the heads up!
So does ATT PM? EverytimeI talk to them, they say we dont do that.. Wife needs a new phone.. I'll try later today.
The best I got for my S3 was, $200 credit, with upgrade fee reversed, and 2 year contract removed. Of course this came with a cost, I had to battle with ATT for a week about my unlimited data,

I just tried and got shot down, they told me they do not price match.
Went to the retail store as well and got shot down there as well.
They say they wont price match but sometimes can just get them to credit the difference to your bill
Confirmed! I got the price match via 611.
I JUST got off of the phone getting the price match. So here are the details:
I've been an AT&T customer since before the Cingular merger, but have been off contract for about 2 months. (Last contract renewal w/ phone upgrade was Sept 2010)
I called into 611, and the upgrade sales department. I told my CSR Justyn (female) that I was off contract, and interested in the GS3, but I was not sure I wanted to go back on contract for a $200 phone. I asked if AT&T would be willing to price match an offer from Sam's club for the GS3 w/ a 2 year contract. She asked how much, I replied with $0.96. (Note: I did not mention that this was a Black Friday special) After verifying that my account was in fact out of contract, she put me on hold to ask her manager if this price match could be confirmed.
She came back from hold, said that her manager would match that price to start a new 2 year contract. I also made sure to get an email documenting that I would keep my grandfathered unlimited data plan.
Final cost: 16GB GS3 - $0.96 + $10.36 S,H,&T = $11.32 total.
If you call in, are polite, but with hesitation to upgrade (and being available to do so) I don't see a problem for anyone else trying to get this for themselves.
(BTW - My GF just got a GS3 a few days ago, and is pissed that she paid $199. She is going to see about getting a refund from T-Mob tonight. )
Awesome, just got off the phone with ATT customer care (third time`s the charm), they credited $200 to my account as a price match from bestbuy (BB price matched me for Amazon`s $99) .
Another success story, just got off the phone. Got a very nice rep, was super polite, said i was a long time customer (even though it only showed i was since January) and got my phone fully refunded! Big thanks to the OP for this!
Well I had mixed success. I followed the approach of nae10135 and I ended up getting them for $50 each, which is what I had been hoping to pay before I saw these extreme deals for BF. I called, spoke to a guy who said $50 each, I said I needed to think about it and he said he'd put a note on my account. I called back an hour later and the lady I spoke to said that they were $300 each (!) and that she didn't have to honor the note on the account. I called back again right away and told the guy I was confused about whether they would honor the offer from the first guy and he was like "Of course we will, it's already noted on your account."
Took longer than I expected but they should be here early next week. When we were almost done I thought to ask if a local AT&T store would have honored the price from the first guy and he said that they might or might not, but I kind of wish I'd gone by to check so I didn't have to wait for shipping etc. Oh well.
The most important thing to me was getting it for a decent price and not having to lose my data plan, which I would have given up if I'd actually gone to Sams.
Nice. Yeah att has been very generous lately. For me for instance. I renewed my contract and got the S3 in July for 150. Went in in September and upgraded my same contract again and got the hox for 99.00 to sell. Then just last week they let me upgrade the same contract again and sold me another gs 3 for 199. So I got three phones at the subsidised price in like 4 months time

I bought my s3 almost a month ago for the full subsidized price of $199. Felling inspired by this post I called att and got a $99 credit on my account. So not as great as $.99 but an improvement from where I'm sitting.
i was informed by a guy who commented on my post on the at&t facebook page, that if your upgrade was after march 1, 2012, that verizon and at&t will add another 6 months to your contract. what do you all think about this, and more that these 2 phone companies are being backed by the us government?
Didn't you sign a contract that stated the term of the agreement was 2yrs? If so, if they change anything on your contract, they are guilty of breech of contract. Why would they want to extend the period of your contract anyway? That's saying, we won't let you spend another $200+ for a new phone, for 6mo longer. Doesn't make sense.
here are some sources for you...
http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/09/att-extends-upgrade-period-to-two-years/
http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/12/verizon-upgrade-eligibility-extends-to-a-full-two-years/
in short, it used to be at the 20th month, you can upgrade and re-new your contract. but now, you have to wait until the 24th month.
but i believe this only applies to new customers/contracts/renews.
I think this is great.... I have been wanting to leave att for years, but I always see the shiny new device when 20 months rolls around and end up buying it. Now next time I am eligible for an upgrade my contract will be up too, so moving to another carrier will be much more tempting.

If you buy a Nexus, or any phone, outright they won't haveyou under their thumb
They can change the upgrade dates if they want
I Did a cross upgrade with my wifes account back in Dec. They messed up the order and sent 2 s3 for free and gave back the upgade eligability for my wifes line. Today I called to ask about cross upgrading again. Both of my s3's have cracked screens. I don't have an upgrade available for my line until Dec. 2014. Told them I wanted a cross upgrade and why. They responded by offering me an early upgrade on an S3 for $1 or the s4 For $100 on my line. And still left my wife's line upgrade in place. Waived the activation fee and overnighting it for free. So in 6 months I have gotten 3 s3's for a total of $1(that includes upgrade fees and shipping) and I still have my wife's upgrade for later when I want either the s4 or whatever. The customer rep was very upfront with telling me that they can waive whatever they want including upgrade dates. I still have unlimited data and I pay a great rate because of my companies discount. So all in all I have always been a fan of ATT and it's customer care department. Just be polite!!
Oh and they can't do anything for Iphones. Another reason to stay android.
Hay everyone I am at the 10th month of the 2 year contract with my Note 2. Thinking of upgrading (or downgrading) to Mega since it's now available on AT&T. Has anyone successfully done an upgrade as early as that? I think it's too crazy but might as well just ask for input here. Thanks for your info!

I have a FAN (foundation account number) account with AT&T. I have had no problems with early upgrades and getting phones with them at the new contract price and in some cases for better than the new contract price. Case in point; I just got my wife an early upgrade (11 months into her contract for that line) to a galaxy S4 last month. I told the CSR that another carrier was offering the phone for $118 dollars with a 2 year agreement and she told me that she could offer it to me for $99 and free next day shipping. I have a rider on my account that also waives the $36 dollar activation fee. Prior to that, she had a Galaxy S3 and I got that upgrade only four months into her contract. I had to get a supervisor to do an override though. I also had a galaxy S3 and I was able to get the Note 2 twelve months into my contract and they offered it to me for $199 instead of the $299 it originally sold for. If you call AT&T premier and ask nicely, they will try to work with you. My most recent purchase was for a phone for my son. He wanted an HTC First. It was 99 cents with a 2 year contract but I was told I could buy it CONTRACT FREE for the insurance deductible price of $125 and again free next day shipping. The HTC First retails for $439 OFF CONTRACT. Great thing about ordering over the phone is that if you need to return the device for any reason within the 14 day return period, there is NO RESTOCKING FEE, and you can return or exchange it at a local AT&T store. I don't know if it helps that I've been a customer for 9 years and have 5 lines of service. YMMV but i would say call, and if a front line CSR says no, then ask to be transferred to a supervisor to see if they can do a courtesy early upgrade. It's worked for me! I don't even pay attention to the "2 year contract" that you sign up for when you get a new device, because I've been upgrading early for the last 4 years. However, if you were to try this with iPhones, I don't think they will budge. Good luck!

Some companies and organizations have an agreement with AT&T to provide discounts to their employees. Call AT&T and ask if your employer or organization has a discount. The savings can be substantial. My current employers discount is 17% and a waiver of the activation fees. I also get a 50% discount on accessories from the AT&T premier store. Each organizations discount and perks vary. I've heard of people getting up to a 27% discount depending on their affiliation.

There are two types of FAN accounts: an IRU (Individual Responsibility Users) and CRU (Corporate Responsibility Users). Both IRU's and CRU's can upgrade over the phone by contacting AT&T Business Services at 1-800-999-5445. The company's permission to let CRU's upgrade must appear in the company profile. Also, IRU's can upgrade at an AT&T corporate store. CRU's cannot. They have to go thru AT&T premier or customer service, not in store.

I usually say that I am interested in a particular device but that I am "x" months into my contract. As a loyal AT&T customer for the last 9 years who has never missed a payment, is it possible to get a courtesy upgrade at the new contract price. I've also asked if they can match a competitors price on a new device. I've had front line CSR's tell me "no" twice but when I asked politely to be connected to a supervisor, I've always gotten an override. The supervisors have always been SUPER nice to me so I always try to be polite over the phone and not sound demanding. Before hanging up they usually ask if they have provided me with good customer service and I never hesitate to tell them how happy I am to be an AT&T customer. I'm almost certain that AT&T annotates on the account if the customer was polite and pleasant to deal with. The last supervisor I spoke with told me that she wanted very hard to work with me because she didn't want to lose such a good customer to another competitor. I know there will people who say that they've had horrible experiences with AT&T customer service but I've had nothing but very pleasant experiences with them.
At&t is charging me $99 to renew my contract. So the moto x I want or note 3 will cost me $99 more the the regular subsidized price, but reset my 2 year contract. I am also 10 months in.

Note 3 screen is 5.7 inch but body dimension might be the same or even less than the Note 2. Looks like Sammy is not willing to make the Note series larger in dimension. Does that mean they are coming up with a 7 inch tablet?
Att store guy can't do early upgrade anymore. Online it would only let me select iPhone. Called and same crap. Was annoyed then came back to this thread and realized we we are a fan account and what number I should be calling. Called and they finally let me do early upgrade but it wasn't as cheap as most of you show offs. Wasn't as expensive as in store early upgrade either. I'm little happier and have save the business number for future.
