Galaxy Nexus Camera Speed - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

One of my main reasons for having the GN (I prefer a keyboard phone) is the responsiveness of the camera. My GN's camera has zero shutter lag running the stock rom rooted with faux123's kernel. When I run custom roms the camera picture taking is slower.
To be clear, the camera is NOT SLOW ON A CUSTOM ROM. It is simply not immediate in the way that it is on stock. Thus far, I have run MCR, Liquid Smooth and CM9 Nightlies. None of them had the camera speed of stock. I may be doing something wrong though. Thought I'd ask before simply sticking with stock rooted.
I'd like to have quick access to settings and other features that a custom rom offers but I absolutely need the camera to be instantaneous as it is on stock.
Any advice?
TIA

It was something they broke on 4.0.3 and fixed in 4.0.4 so try a newer ROM running 4.0.4

Thanks for a fast reply on that. Will give that a go.
Edit: Tried out Liquid and it is really so much slower than stock camera. It focuses for a full one to two seconds before the shutter activates and that kinda delay won't work for me. I'll try some other 4.0.4 roms and see if they do any better this go round. If not, back to stock 4.0.2 until they figure out this data drop bug then stock 4.0.4. I gotta have the instant shutter.

Well, tried several more roms and they all have the focus lag. So I'm back to stock. It's weird to me. Seems that they would at least be the same. Wouldn't necessarily expect a custom rom to be faster in that dept but slower? No matter. Stock android on a Nexus is satisfying enough. I need the instant camera. Thanks again.

Well its the difference between AOSP and the OTA. They are very similar, but still different. That's a perfect example, but 4.0.4 was supposed to improve the shutter speed and make it focus faster.

AOKP ftw. I have the same qualms and AOKP has always been incredibly quick with the camera. I'm running MIUI rom right now and it does take that extra fraction of a second or whatever to focus but I deal I was running AOKP M4 and Franco's M2 (and later his nightlies - don't remember if any were better than the other) and it would capture so quickly that I had to double check my little previous preview window to see if it snapped.

I think on all 4.04 the camera is slower because it allows the camera to focus and take a better pic while before it wouldn't focus if you didn't click manually and would take pic right away. Sometimes this would result in worse quality and I believe that's why they changed it in 4.04.
Could be wrong though..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

Typically I find the first pic is slower while it focuses but sequential shots are instant.
Asus TF101 ICS 4.0.3

AOKP is just as slow. I'm looking at a fresh install of AOKP right now. It's the touch to focus feature all the custom roms have. Makes the camera so slow focusing (and again, when I say so slow, I mean slower than stock which is instant). Stock is the only option I guess. Unless, that is, one of the roms has the option to disable touch to focus. Is there one?
As for what player911 is saying, this is true. The first pic is slower focusing and sequential pics are faster. IF you basically don't move the camera. If you recompose the shot, move around, the camera will do the focusing dance all over again. I have a 20 month old. I need the first shot. AND I'll be moving around, lol. The custom roms just don't cut it in this regard. I've never had a phone where the stock software was decent enough to the point that I'd even consider not going custom but the GN running Android without Touchwiz/Sense/Blur is just awesome and I can definitely live with it. Plus I have my instant camera!!
Back to stock I go.
Thanks folks.

This sounds ridiculous to me. Yes, it does take 1-2 seconds for the first shot to focus, but then all sequential shots are instant. That is the point. So you want to have really blurry photos all the time and have it never focus, even though you're getting an instant first shot? That doesn't make sense to me.

Actually, the camera focusing is something I would like. Sure, the instantaneous thing is nice, but I'd rather a clear picture. Maybe a custom rom could offer the option to switch between the different ways the camera operates (like one option focusing before the first shot the other like it is before .4)?

OP, once on stock 4.0.4, you will see the camera actually focuses.... What you are describing is the behaviour on stock 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 roms

Point camera at subject, allow it to focus on its own, take picture. Just as fast as the 4.0.2 camera if not faster
Sent from my francoPhone

4.0.4 the camera is much better. First shot takes half a second or less to focus, and most of the shots after that are instant if you take them quickly enough.
The quality of the pics is much better now as well.
On 4.0.2 all the pics came out blurry or double vision. Now they are sharp and clear.

The first shot is only blurry if you can't hold the camera steady. I can.
As for 4.0.4 camera taking less than a second to focus, it just isn't true in my experience. I used half a dozen 4.0.4 rims last night to be sure. Why would I want to be rooted and on stock rom if this wasn't truly the case???? Who would want that?
Think about it....

So because it is not true for you, it must be false for everyone else?
Nice logic....
You need optimal light conditions for quick focusing. I focus in a second or less, and each shot after that is instant.

I asked for help finding the fastest camera because I want to catch photos of my son. People gave suggestions, I tried them and they weren't faster FOR ME. I said and clicked thanks for the suggestions. What's the problem here? You've got too much time on your hands. Leave me alone if you can't be helpful.

Focusing is almost instant on 4.0.4. Way better than previous versions of ICS for me.

Few questions!

Okay hi all i will soon be joining the fun whit you guys but before using my upgrade next month on this phone i got a few questions here it goes :
-how is the camera ?? Camera is a really important feature to me and what i mean by this is does it take good detailed pictures?
-How is speed performance and battery life? i am a student so i atleast need 5hours of use i dont game at all i just listen to music check xda and Facebook time to time..
-how is the sound quality on this device? Speaking about the speakers of course..
- can it handle live wallpapers whit ease ? I have an older phone that can barely run lwp lol was just wondering ..
- does this phone have a camera stabilization / image stabilization? Like the iphone 4s
Well that's all for now and sorry for the long post

People often criticize about the camera but I honestly don't see any problems with it as long as you focus the picture.
Speed and battery life: Speed is definitely amazing on this phone. Haven't experienced any lag using stock ROM / kernel but I've moved onto customizing it with custom ROMS and kernels. Battery life is iffy when it comes to LTE users, if you're on GSM, you shouldn't have any problems. Although, you will get the best battery life by rooting / custom ROMs / kernels.
Sound quality is amazing. Get Volume+ to increase speaker volume, that's about it.
Live Wallpapers: only live wallpapers that are optimized for Android 4.0 (phase beam).
Focus on camera? yes.
If you really value camera quality, look into the rezound. I really miss the camera. Much better compared to the GN.

Camera is pretty average. For me it's good enough but perhaps not for you. Check out some of the threads like this one - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392436. I love the effects you can add afterwards with the stock app too
Performance is generally very good but a bit laggy on scrolling homescreens and in the launcher. This is on 4.0.1/4.0.2, apparently the 4.0.3 upgrade will sort this out but that remains to be seen! Battery life I find quite good, gets me through the day anyway. I get about 4-5 hours screen on time. In total usually lasts me between 1-1 and a half days. It really depends on your personal usage though.
Sound quality is fairly bad in my opinion but I can live with it fine. The speaker is quiet and in-call sound quality is also quiet and sometimes it's really hard to hear people, especially if you're in a noisy environment.
Live wallpapers are just as bad on the Galaxy Nexus as on other phones. Only one works and that is one of the stock ones called Phase Beam, not even the other stock LWPs work, which says a lot I think about LWPs!
The camera doesn't have image stabilisation. In fact that is probably one of the worst things about it as getting a steady shot is the hardest aspect of getting a good photo on this phone. Quite often when you hit the button to take the picture it can be enough to put it out of focus. If you do get a steady shot it's pretty good (in my opinion at least).
Although I sound really critical I'm just trying to be honest. I absolutely love my Galaxy Nexus and I highly recommend you get it!

The best advice I can give you is that,
If you value having a stock Google experience without waiting 6+ months for your perspective manufacturer to update your phone then you will love the Galaxy Nexus.
Yes, camera isn't the best. But it's good enough to take casual pictures.
After all, this is a developer device. At the same time, you'll be rocking 4.65" inches of screen fun. You most likely won't be disappointed, give it a try--watch YouTube videos, reviews, etc.
I myself and other users (on this forum) are probably biased of the phone. But honestly, stock Android without having manufacturer skins is the way to go. I will not accept any phones with skins on top of them and then getting the latest and newest Android 6 months after it's release. Yes, there are custom ROMs featuring these new Android versions but... all these ICS ports to other phones are still using the older version of the kernel.
In development, Nexus devices always last. We've already have great developers for the phone and it will only get better.

4.0.4 Camera Improvements are noticeable

Hey,
I know this is not a huge thread or the most useful ever, but i didn't wanna swarm threads with potentially irrelevant info.
But anyways, the camera improvements are great. You used to have your frame focused and the shutter came too long after the focus so you often had blurry pictures. Now you actually notice that it refocuses at the exact moment of the shutter (obviously "exact moment" is somewhat an expression). That alone improves the quality by a ton and most likely what they refer to when saying they fixed "stabjlity".
So after you flash to 4.0.4 don't fear to use your camera anymore!
I assume all the camera quality improvements will be present in the latest CM9 nightly based on Android 4.0.4 as well?

The graininess does also seem to have major improvements. Overall the quality is A1. I dont wanna risk it and say its like iphone pictures but it sure as hell is one step closer.
This just got me excited...I use my camera a lot. I was going to hold off on upgrading to AOKP 4.0.4 build until they added everything back in but maybe I will make the jump quicker. Post some bad lit pictures up in the picture thread please and specify it is on 4.0.4 please. I am sure a lot of people would be interested to see these...
wow, the camera is muuuch better. is like they discovered how to focus propertly
The yellowish issue when using the flash seems to be gone too.
After testing further I have to say my only complaint is that the shutter speed is not constant, as in sometimes it will take the picture instantly and sometimes it will lag a little (not because of focus)
I still wish there was a way to batch delete photos.

Long press on a photo while in the Gallery and then you can choose which ones you want to delete and delete them!
Lol what? Batch delete has been around since at least Eclair, if not earlier.
A comparison could be great
I've taken a couple of shots and while it's too early to say, I think it's improved.
To be honest a comparasion would be somewhat hard to do. And also... why... Its better, its not really gonna change anything, its not like comparing 2 equivalent and different products.

O seu atualizou via OTA?
Do you have update via OTA?
So far I see more aggressive post processing correction of white balance on flash shots. Way less blue tint after processing. Also night scene mode usable for macro shots since it focuses on near objects much better. Will experiment more but so far just these two makes it much more usable for me.
Seems to focus a lot faster for me while not being blurry at all.
That's a definite improvement if I'm seeing it right.

What do you guys think?

I am using a t989 now, after asurion replaced my galaxy nexus for it. I am wondering if anyone else here came from a galaxy nexus and now has this phone. If so, do you feel slighted like I do? There are no solid ICS roms for this yet and it is annoying going backward instead of advancing. Thoughts?
Well you lost the better screen, ics situation is only temporary (and i wouldn't exactly call the ucld2 based roms unstable), and you gained a better camera. Battery situation is about the same, you could even gain some life by using verizon galaxy nexus extended battery.

I have the skyrocket, and i have little to no shutter lag, can't comment on the t989. However, have you tested the t989 or skyrocket with new ics leak? The camera is SIGNIFICANTLY faster, on gb is was slow, i'll give you that. The references you are making though are software related. I guarantee once we get OTA ICS i'll be laughing at you

Questions about the GS2.. Amaze user here

Well I have an HTC Amaze for about 2 months now.
I recently upgraded to ICS and it completely ruined my wifi calling experience because everytime I am on a call, there is a delay in the voice, that gets worse as time goes on. Not to mention everyone says I sound alot lower on wifi calling compared to normal use. I rely on wifi calling in my place cuz I get no signal here
I called T-Mobile and there are no Amaze to send me, so they sent me a GS2 instead. I am getting it on Monday. In reality, I can just keep the Amaze if I hate the GS2, send back the GS2 and deal with the wifi issue, but whats wrong with trying out the GS2 for 7 days right? =]
Anyways, What are the major differences between the 2 of these phones. Mainly my big issue is wifi calling and am curious how good, or not good, it is on the gs2.
I use my camera alot and I hear the Amaze takes the cake on this comparison, but I figured you guys would know better since you have a gs2. How is the photo quality?
Feel free to add more differences if you like. Sorry if its been asked before.
Thanks alot!
BTW I always run stock, so no downgrade to gingerbreads please =] lol
I feel that the SGS2 camera is excellent. You can take a picture and then zoom in and the picture will still be clear.
Here is an article showing the difference between the 2 phones.

Enjoy!
Hope I helped you out! If I did don't forget to hit the THANKS.
Oh your welcome. Believe me I have read all those articles. Just trying to get first hand accounts from owners on here
Keep the GS2. Much better phone IMO. Can't find anything wrong with it. Even stock this phone is very smooth and stable. Just a rock solid, good looking phone.

The ICS roms we have for the SGS2 also have the wifi calling delay. Works perfect on GB.
Hopefully the official ICS update doesnt have the problem

This is a great phone, had a for about 4 months. I was recently offered a straight trade for Amaze so I was considering that as well, but decided I needed compensation for my SGS2 as well, so it didn't go down. Try to extend your time to like 9 days when the ICS update drops so you can see if ICS will effect wifi-calling?
I've had the htc mogul, evo and evo3d. I left sprint for tmobile and got the s2, I havent had any complaints and dont miss htc at all. I will say this though the s2 camera is ok not great, no zoom and not fast. I find it strange that several years ago my original palm pre would snap pics as fast as you could press it, and here we are several years later with sorry cameras still, except for the amaze. I would raise hell about having an htc and try to drag a htc one out of them, i mean htc is what you bought.
Might be a dumb question but is there not an auto shot mode on the s2 camera.
Im messing around with it and I dont wanna have to choose what kind of mode to put it in every night.. as in night mode etc etc.
Is there an option for it to just do it itself.
Oh and sorry, is there a way to make the photos widescreen when you take pix? When I view them on my comp, there all square.
Its about equal.
After a few months, with both, phones,I finally (yesterday) have decided gs2 is the better device.
Its much more responsive, battery lasts longer(stock/rooted).The camera is best on amaze, but not by much.
gs3 drops soon for $199.

Choose 6.5 meg resolution which should be widescreen, at least it is on DarksideBeta07. On stock, I think it is similar but I don't run stock to check.
Lastly, I have a Sensation and GS2; HTC Camera's are quicker for shots; but picture quality are both very good.
Having both phones. Was an extensive amaze user. Amaze's camera is amazing especially their night scene pictures compared to the gs2. Sorry but our camera sucks at night lol. meaning, pictures taking without flash. However daytime pictures, amaze has a slight lead especially macro pictures.
Battery is definitely better you probably notice already. Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity is a bit stronger and connects quicker. That was the first thing i notice about the two. Had them side by side.
Honestly i use to like the amaze's resolution because games had more details (compared side by side) but i hate it's viewing angle.
In the end, i would go with the gs2, it's snappier, better connectivity, longer battery life, and that's most of the day to day stuff you would notice. although the amaze's is by far the best. It's better than the iPhone 4s's too if you're wondering. haven't played with the new one s/x so no input there.. Probably because i see no need to change phones. I usually change every couple months. Been rocking this phone for 7 months love it

I noticed that the " little " things on this phone are just better then the Amaze. Like the little bugs and things you normally wouldnt notice. I also feel its better to hold this phone and type with. I also see myself not worrying so much about damaging the phone. Its funny cuz you would think that with the amaze and its better build quality that you wouldnt be worried, but I always am very careful with it, esp when putting it down. Its weird. Probably cuz its heavier.
For me, the screen thing doesnt really bother me that much. What really blew me away was how loud the music player is with my good headphones in. I always hated that about the amaze. I always wanted it louder and it never would go louder. This one is better then an ipod.
I am a big camera user so thats probably why I might send this one back. If this phone had the same quality cam as the amaze, I would DEFF keep it.
I also like the vibration on this phone more. I also have realized that I like thin and light phones alot more then hefty ones.
Now my huge nitpicks with the gs2 is the compression of photos on MMS, and of course the camera. Those 2 really do annoy the hell out of me.
My ONLY concern would be this.. I love this phone because the wifi calling is PERFECT. Its barely usable with the Amaze after the ICS update. Im just worried that the same thing is going to happen with the GS2 when you guys get the update. I would hate for me to keep this phone, just for a few days later for the update to put me in the same situation with the GS2 as with my amaze. If that was the case, id keep the amaze.
I already got an update from tmobile on this phone but have refused to download it, although I am sure its going to do it automatically sooner or later.
Anyway I am really enjoying the experience with the phone and have until Sat to make up my mind.
I was going to try and root my amaze and see if something can fix my wifi calling but the process is a lil more difficult then I thought.
Why the GS2 is better
In my opinion the GS2 is far more advanced than the amaze. It has a larger screen, faster cpu and better overall design. If you are worried about wifi calling and want to root, there are some roms on here that have ics which have good wifi calling, although some dont.

[Q] New to the Phone, What should I do?

Hello OG's!!! I have been lurking here for about week trying to decide between the S4, OG, and One. I went with the OG because the handset was just too gorgeous, even if it was released 10 months ago, the specs are still on par with anything being released right now. So I took the free upgrade to the OG instead of forking out for the others. My question (as an avid flasher) is what were you looking to correct when you flashed the phone. I always ended up flashing because I hated the skins or I wanted to go from GB to ICS to JB. So for those here who have jumped into rooting this phone, what was it that you felt the need to improve? Battery life? Just straight up AOSP? Wonky camera software? I've been playing for a couple of hours and so far I am happy with the camera (a little patience is required to get a really good shot) and I'm flipping around through the OS and the skin seems to be pretty light compared to HTC and Samsung. I think if I just load Holo Launcher and disable some apps I might be happy on stock. Until 4.3 or KLP get released.

As far as the camera, download the Google Play Edition Camera apk. Way better. As far as launchers, go with either nova launcher or Apex launcher with a JB Skin. I use it over holo launcher because I can hide apps in the app drawer and make the search bar persistent. I also use Holo Locker as my lock screen.

This device is one of the best you can get, and at the same time, can be one of the biggest pains you can buy as well. But, with some patience, balls, and a little insight, you can be running anything you want. If your interests are more towards stock, Lifeless and Vectus are both very good ROMs with plenty of features. If you prefer custom ROMs with lots of extras and choices, I personally would recommend one of the ROMs I work on, Beanstalk and JellyBeer. There are also AOKP, CM10, CM10 w/ Linaro, Rootbox, and others that will give you pretty much any kind of experience you want. Just make sure you read the rooting and unlocking thread very carefully and follow the instructions to the letter to avoid any hiccups. Also worth mentioning is the fact that all ROMs do have quirks and imperfections to them(I believe Lifeless is as close to complete stability as you can get, but it also is as close to stock as any of the others). All of these works are constantly being updated with fixes and new features, but our device can be finicky, so if you require total stability, you may just want to stay with stock. If you need any help, you can PM me, and if you want to learn to build on your own, take a look at Project Rookie II. Be cool
Welcome. I myself had to make a decision between this and the other 2 phones. I'm glad in a way I went with this 1. Its definitely on par with the other "big names" and its just as good spec wise. Only problem i have is the camera when its zoomed. I'm going to try the google play edition like danny stated. As far as rom goes, I believe Lifeless has pretty much the most stable rom going. Its pretty much stock but without bloat. Battery has been good to me, only app that I had problems with was Pro Player, so I got GMMP and its been better on the battery. Great phone overall but kit didn't get the recognition it deserved.
I dont really know LG's track record on phones, but I hope they dont EOL it before KLP. I have a feeling they will because OG2 and OG Pro are out, but then again like I said I dont know how LG works.
I am still completely stock, just added a new launcher, locker, and the Play Camera. I have a completely working photosphere (awesome, something I really missed from my Gal Nex). I have noticed that when taking macro shots, the Play Camera focuses better. But I was able to get some decent macro shots on the stock camera by getting the focus set from farther back and zooming in. I am still tinkering with white balance and ISO settings. But the flash seems to be bright as the sun and I can't do much with it, my pics keep getting washed out with the flash. But the performance, holy crap this thing is fun to use. Everything just pops.
