[Q] Bluetooth and encryption - HTC One X

I notice that enabling internal storage encryption on my One X disables all bluetooth functionality. The bluetooth toggle button in the device's settings menu becomes greyed out after encryption is enabled. Although I can still turn it 'on', it remains greyed out and never actually turns on. And when I exit and re-enter settings, it's back to 'off'. This issue occurred when the device was fresh, prior to installing or downloading anything onto it.
Is anyone able to confirm this issue on their device? Is there a way to get both functions working simultaneously?

Yes I have the same problem. I contacted HTC and they confirmed this problem on their test phone and reported it to tech support. Not sure they have a solution yet.

camera too?
I tried encryption. I didn't try Bluetooth, but I did notice the camera app locking up if I switched back and forth to the gallery. Did either of you notice anything similar?

I didn't have that problem. The camera app worked fine for me while I had encryption enabled.

Hmm...

That's interesting, I wonder what I did to mine...
Did you encrypt both system and user partitions?

Yup

Bluetooth stopped working after encryption.
Roll on the OTA!
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

Does the OTA fix it though? Haven't downloaded it yet.

Yes!
Just downloaded the OTA, it's not an update to Android which is still at 4.0.3, but the phone software level is now 1.28.401.9.
Bluetooth is now working for encrypted devices! Joy.

That's great news!
Do you also know if enabling phone storage encryption (which is separate from internal storage encryption) no longer wipes the phone storage during the process?

No, I've not tried that.

Well in that case, I nominate you to be my guinea pig test subject. Do you accept?

that is very logical because when you encrypt your phone data your phone secures your files so another device can't read it.
So that's why it turns the Bluetooth off because the other phones just can't read your files anymore.
encrypting files is only necessary if you have secret stuff on your phone.
so it can't work simultaneously because other phone's don't know how to read your files.

Logical? That sounds very stupid to me. What if I need to use a bluetooth headset? I was able to use encryption and bluetooth simultaneously with several BlackBerries over the past few years, and I'm sure most encryption-able devices support that (my MacBook included). Anyway, it's been fixed with the recent OTA. Bluetooth now works while internal storage encryption is enabled.

Agreed! If it wasn't a bug it wouldn't have been fixed.
On that argument, you could argue that tethering should be blocked when in encrypted status.

Besides Bluetooth not working I had these following issues when I enabled encrypted storage:
FM Tuner
GPS
Can you please a) confirm whether FM tuner and GPS is working on encrypted device POST the OTA update and b) anyone confirm they have issues with FM tuner and GPS when they encrypted their device?
thanks

The FM Radio looks fine, it starts and I can hear stations once I plug in the handset.
The GPS icon appears in the status bar OK and the map is positioning correctly.
It all looks good.

Guys, any word on phone storage encryption? I'd still like to know if the device wipes the phone storage during the process of encrypting it. I've already installed too much onto it to risk losing it all and starting over.
EDIT: Turns out it's a feature, not a bug, and the device warns you of the imminent wipe beforehand.

[Q] Bluetooth automatically toggles on/off HTC TP2

Ok, so I have the HTC Touch Pro 2 and was running froyo 2.2 (FXR07) and the bluetooth was working fine. It was actually working to route audio to my stereo headphone for listening to my audiobooks! Then, it suddenly stopped working correctly. I started having to manually re-pair the device each time. Shortly after that, it stopped allowing BT to turn on correctly at all. If I check the box to enable bluetooth, it begins cycling back and forth between turning bluetooth on and turning bluetooth off, until I uncheck the box. I tried updating to FFXR07.1 and had the same issue. I tried GBX0A and still had the same issue.
Note, I did carry over my data.img, which I realize I may want to go back and just try from scratch with the raw files and let it make a new data.img, but I will have to gack and try that again later to see.
Anyone got any other bright ideas on this?
This has been answered but I'll answer again. Delete the data.img. if you are switching between builds format the card first. Use titanium backup to backup any apps and info you need formatting is your friend.

re: Bluetooth
Thanks for the suggestion and reply. I did actually go back later and try recreating the data.img file completely. I tried this on both the GBX0A and FXR07.1 to no avail. I'll try formatting the card completely, but I'd like to give that titanium backup a try first. I'm not familiar with this, though and I'll have to see if I can find it and find out how to use it.
I wouldn't even use bluetooth at all yet. Audio routing isn't fully functional yet. Patience is a virtue my friend.

But that's just it...it WAS working fine...for a couple of weeks. Then all of a sudden just stopped working. And I Thought I'd seen in the dev thread where they thought they had it partially working.
In test kernels it works but test kernels use unstable code which can cause more harm than good to your build

So, at the risk of exposing my true ignorance here....what is the appropriate way to format the microSD card? Obviously I can't do it from within Android since that is running from the card. I have downloaded the HP format tool that is listed at the begining of the development thread, but it doesn't seem to detect anything. I'm assuming that it won't format the card while the card is in the phone, right? I'm guessing I've probably got to go dig out (if I can find it) the adapter that will allow me to plug the card directly into my computer, right? Or is there some way to do it from inside the phone with the phone plugged into USB?
Edit: Disregard. I figured out what I was doing wrong. When plugging it in while booted into WinMo, I had neglected to select to use it as a disk drive before. Once I did that, I was able to use either the HP tool or the Windows disk management tool. I used the latter since this one allowed me to set the allocation units to 4k as I had seen suggested elsewhere for performance improvement.
Well I hope you enjoy xdandroid I don't use bluetooth ever so the feature isn't a big deal for me. Everything I need works and I'm relatively happy with it.

GPS and Email encryption

Hey,
Anyone else having problems with GPS when they have their device encrypted? My work email requires me to encrypt the hard drive on the phone, but once I do that, my GPS no longer works. If I un-encrypt the phone my GPS works again, but I can no longer access my work email. Anyone with a similar experience or thoughts on how to fix this?
Thanks
As a matter of fact you may be on to something. I was testing the GPS out on Friday when I picked up the phone. It was working great. However I set up the phone this weekend and encrypted the device. I have been unable to lock a signal since. Other than device encryption nothing has been modified on the device.
Anyone else having a similar issue? Or anyone able to encrypt their phone and still have GPS work?
The stock email app required me to encrypt the SD and enter a ridiculous unlock screen pass. I installed Exchange by Touchdown and now I have a simpler pass that is only required to view email in the app, and the SD card can remain unencrypted .

Looks like we're alone in this boat.
The GPS in the epic 4g touch is pure ****. I put it next to my EVO 3D using the GPS test app. EVO 3D found
8-10 satellites, the epic 4g touch found none. unacceptable, Samsung still sucks.
Oh, I've never used encryption.

Yeah Samsung must not have learned anything from the complaints about the first galaxy s gps problems. Maybe they're just too big of a company to give a poop. I wanted to keep my captivate on at&t but the bad gps was bothering me so I switched to the iPhone which has an acceptable gps. I think motorola makes the most accurate gps and phone radio of all smartphones though not that the iPhone is lousy but moto makes phones with a great gps.

Htc makes phones with great gps radios also. The gps in a smartphone whether it's android or iPhone is a huge feature for finding locations of businesses nearby and free turn by turn directions and other apps. Samsung should not keep producing android phones with a gps that doesn't work as advertised.

this is from samsung..... bla bla bla...
Visitor:
i have spent 10+ hours looking into this as a problem. the epic touch 4g stock works fine. gps etc.. however on any et4g if you go to settings --> locations and security --> and turn on the encrypt phone option it will reboot, encrypt the data and the gps will no longer work.
Visitor:
if i decrypt the phone the gps will resume functioning
Visitor:
however, in light of recent android security issues i must have the ability to encrypt my phone. so i went to sprint and we tested to see if this was just an issue with my phone. it turns out that this happened on all 7 phones we tested
Suzanne: I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you .
Suzanne: May I know since when are you experiencing this issue?
Visitor:
this is an easily reproduced problem. and seems to happen on all epic touch 4g phones as far as i can tell
Visitor:
this happened the minute i encrypted the phone.
Suzanne: Would you mind holding 3 minutes while I gather the required information on your request?
Suzanne: Thank you for holding.
Suzanne: Device Encryption is a safe with a security solution that helps protect mobile data without the need to sacrifice speed and functionality. The Samsung Galaxy S II contains powerful encrypted hardware, minimising the use of security software and applying encryption technology to the hardware itself. The incorporated Sybase Afaria Mobile Device Management and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync complement the encryption support with their own mechanisms to help secure important corporate and personal information
Suzanne: So when you select encrypt device due to security reasons It might be stopping GPS also.
Suzanne: So I request you to please don't select device Encryptionto access GPS.
Visitor:
it does not stop the device from getting my location as long as the option is chosen to use the data network. It does however disable the ability for the gps sat lock. i want to preface that with that the motorola atrix / htc evo's and other sprint branded phones have the encryption option and dont have any issue with getting a sat lock
Suzanne: I will surely pass on this issue to our support team I appreciate you to bringing this issue to our notice.
Suzanne: I can understand your concern.
Suzanne: The phone is designed in such a way that if you select device Encryption it will not allow access GPS.
Visitor:
since this is easy to reproduce is it possible for you to confirm my findings and possibly let me know when a fix could be anticipated
Suzanne: Unfortunately, there is no specific ETA mentioned for the release of the fix at this moment, once the release is official you can find it on Samsung website.
Visitor: i appreciate your comments but i do not believe that this is how the device was designed to work. Is there someone who can call me on this ? i just need to get a good idea if this is a bug or if you guys intend to fix.
Suzanne: I am sorry to inform you we are not having the access to call to customers. However, you can contact our dedicated Galaxy S phones voice support team at 1-877-EZ2GALAXY (1-877-392-4252).They are available 24/7. You will need to registered to avail 24x 7 service.
Visitor: ok, i will give it a try

So they're saying its completely by design, encryption = no GPS? But location still works via data network.
Ugh.
Thanks for the transcript, please keep us posted if Samsung comes back to you with a "fix".

Bluetooth incompatibility with internal storage encryption

I have an issue with my One X whereby the use of internal storage encryption disables all bluetooth functionality. What I mean by this is that after internal storage encryption is enabled, the bluetooth toggle button within the device's settings menu becomes greyed out. I can still switch it to "on" while it is greyed out, but the function never actually turns on. If I then exit and re-enter settings, the bluetooth toggle button will return to "off". Thus, it is not possible to use the bluetooth function on my device while internal storage encryption is enabled as it won't turn on, regardless of whether I intend to transfer files or connect a headset.
This issue occurred when the device was fresh, prior to the installation of any apps or download of any files. Even after a factory reset, which brings back Bluetooth functionality, the issue repeats itself once internal storage encryption is again enabled.
After contacting HTC support on two separate occasions (via email and chat), I was twice told to perform a soft reset by.. and I quote.. "removing the battery from the phone while it is still powered on" and "leaving it out for 5 minutes". Challenge accepted?
Is anyone able to confirm this issue with their device? Is it a fact of life or is there a way around it? Is there something I'm missing? Any help would be much, much appreciated.
I want to add that enabling phone storage encryption, which is separate from internal storage encryption in this device, will cause it to wipe the phone storage first. That includes the deletion of pre-installed gallery and music items.
I have the same issue
Brand new phone.
Encrypted the storage.
Since then unable to start / use bluetooth.
Very poor for a flagship device!
same with me.. I activated NHS.net exchange account on one X with encryption..bluetooth stopped working...had to decide between email and bluetooth.. hope HTC fixes this bug soon.

Wait! So you're saying bluetooth now works while internal storage encryption is enabled? Does enabling phone storage encryption no longer wipe the phone storage too?!

Bluetooth not working after July update

My Bluetooth is completely unreliable after the last update. Volume is too soft. Doesn't connect to devices. I've tried unpairing and repairing and it stays connected for a short time, then when I try and connect again it doesn't connect.
Even the streaming is shaky.
Any solutions?
Check to see how much storage space you have left.
Part of your symptoms could be explained by low storage space.
But it sounds to me like you need to back up your data and apps and then do a factory reset.
I did a Network Settings Reset (under Backup and Reset) and lost all my wifi passwords. None of my networks are connecting automatically anymore. I'm horrified that I might have lost 5 years of accumulated wifi passwords!
Any solution?

No and my phone is not rooted, but doesn't Google back up these Settings? Every time I set up a new phone, it downloads all my previous WiFi codes.

Only way I know of to get that info is to perform factory reset.

Broken screen, trying to do data recovery

I have a friend's A50 that was dropped and the screen does not power on. The device is stock, unrooted. It does power on because I get vibrations from doing various power button long presses and such, feeling as if it's powering on and then entering the OS. Additionally it can even be called and it rings.
Unfortunately, USB Debugging is not enabled so ADP isn't working. Also since it's defaulting to no file transfer, plugging it into a computer is not allowing access to the file system. All I'm trying to do is recover her photos and songs and such that she has recorded from the device storage.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to access the onboard storage?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've personally tested it on my A50 prior to telling you. So it works 100%
Your problem doesn't require forensic tools, this simple fix works.
Tip :
• Windows key on keyboard opens Google Assistant. No need to say Hey/Ok Google.
• Not necessary, but you can keep another Smartphone nearby to verify your actions.
• Read the comments under the video.

Whelp, no such luck. I'm sure that method would work fine under normal circumstances. I was able to practice on my Pixel 2 XL and it did work. But it appears she did not have google assistant set up, so I could not use voice to turn on wifi. It also appears to have no data connection without wifi, so I can't push an app to it through the play store. Even if I could get wifi turned on, there's no way to force it to connect to my wifi.
The unlock is a pattern, not a pin, so while you *can* unlock a pattern with a mouse or track pad (which I do have), doing it blindly is nearly impossible. So I have no way of knowing if I've even unlocked the phone. In short, I really don't know if there's much I can do for her, sadly.
@Morpherios
I already stated you don't need voice assistant activated, you can use Windows key to activate without saying Ok/Hey Google.

The biggest 2 problems are that I can't verify if i've unlocked it since it uses a pattern and there's no feedback to tell me (I'm basically doing it blind from a touchpad because I don't know how else to go about it), and also that I don't know if it'll even get onto my wifi assuming I can get in and get it to turn on wifi.
I wish it was a pin, that would at least be easy to type in on the keyboard.

Don't worry.
I see you need your data urgently.
Use Cracked version of Dr.Fone software, it'll recover your data without USB debugging as well.
P.S - Message me personally on Xda, don't post here from now. I'll help you there.

What can I do if cant install APP from google play from PC?
How about replace the display and have a functional phone with your data back?
Hi, is it possible to unlock the device with the keyboard and then use a USB-C to HDMI cable to view the screen on an external monitor ?
