Does anyone know how to access CWM other than using the volume down button?
Depends on the kernel. It could be back or search key.

Make sure you have recovery manually installed, either through installing the recovery itself, or flashing a kernel. Otherwise, you don't have a recovery to access at all.

Did you install it through an app? If so, the app should have a "reboot into recovery" option. If not, download the xperia cwm app from the play store.

I have installed the cwm from the app store and it will not let me access cwm. I do have a unlocked bootloader. What recoveries can I install that do not use the volume down to access can
?
You'll need to flash a new kernel to have permanent recovery, without the app method. Search the development forum for the numerous kernels.

Edit: I saw somewhere that Keiran's kernel also uses the back key. Not sure though.

Good call by Joe here. Installing the app does not install CWM. You have to run the app to do that. Also, I don't know if that app works if you have an unlocked bootloader.

Perhaps be more clear next time too. And you're welcome.
---------- Post added at 08:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:00 PM ----------
To help gain some clarity, as you've not provided some crucial information:
Do you have root?
Did you actually install CWM?
If you've done both of these you can flash any zip that was made for the LT28. If you're trying to flash a zip for another model it's likely not going to work. I avoid flashing mods, opting instead to install them manually.
All of this is covered in the ion forum if you bothered to reeeeead.
I thought it was a givin that I had root I spose not tho I was pretty clear. The only reason I was a bit curt was because I had "not roms" in brackets.
The zip files im trying to install have to do with the audio player so they are probably more of a driver type thing. My firmware is stock, rooted CWM Rom is not installed I have the CWM app and it says there is no recovery for this phone stock ics rooted locked boot. And yes I have been searching but havent found much useful yet.
Sent from my LT28i using xda app-developers app
You need to connect device to computer for almost all aspects. Root , cwm, mods etc.
You need to solve the pc issue first then look into mods and such.
Also if root you can manually replace the file with root explorer from the extracted zip

Type this "cwm recovery for xperia ion" or this "clockwork recovery for xperia ion" in google search and come back and tell us what you found.
Our phones will not boot into recovery from cwm all we really have is flashmode. Yes some zips can be flashed through cwm such as themes and what not from the Xperia s but you need to match mounting points and what not, if you flash a bad zip you may get a boot loop if that's the case just shut the phone off then run flashtool reflash the. Ftf and you'll be fine.

Hey I am new to this and I was wondering if there would be harmful parts of install a custom rom on the xperia play
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
If you don't know what you are doing you can soft brick your device. Most of the time since it is soft brick, you can still flash the factory image to recover it (using flashtool).
If you want to install custom rom on the R800x, you need to unlock its bootloader first, after that it also need to separately flash a compatible kernel for that rom before or after flashing the rom for it to boot successfully. There are plenty of guides, you can start by reading this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024782
Also for me, with the Play, its good enough to stay with stock and just root the phone, since it perform best with Gingerbread.
I have already unlock the bootloader but I was just wondering if thing bad would happen if I install a custom rom. someone told the play store would be gone and apps like FaceBook and youtube wont work is that true?

Most of them remove google apps (gapps) but u can just flash the gapps.zip which will probably be stated or linked in the ROMs thread. As for youtube not working, thats not true works fine on ALL ROMs for me.

After rooting the device, did you install a custom recovery? you can download goo manager in the play store and install TWRP recovery and reboot to it. If you already have the recovery installed and cant boot to the recovery then use adb to reboot it. Or another way is download terminal emulator and reboot using command lines from you for...only if you have root.
are you on stock or non stock recovery .. And to get into download mode . As far as i know from a off state hold down vol down and power button . to get into down load mode and its vol up to recovery ..
Not tried on my note but its how it goes on the note 10.1 tablet and other samsung devices i have had

Negative, only stuff I installed after the root was superSU and titanium backup.. both of the paid versions. .. When I power up holding vol+ Home Power instead of any upload option I just get the following
Reboot sys now
Apply update from ADB
Apply update from external storage
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Apply update from cache
Tried wipe data/factory reset to clear the root mod (multi-csc), but basically just wiped my phone of everything else except the root, lol, so at that point I figured I should ask for help..

that is the stock recovery. You need to get root again since u factory reset it. Once u get superSU go to play store and download goo manager to install TWRP or if you prefer CWR then install rom manager.
