So what options do we have with the SGS2 for video chat/calling?
I see in the dialer/contacts there is an option to call somebody with video, how
does that work? Has anybody been able to try it?
D
I can confirm that the video calling from the dialer works great between two SGSIIs, even over a week 3G signal.
If you have root access, you can also install the new Google Talk app that has video. Works great as well between phone and PC over wifi at least.
I haven't tested other than this, but it gets me in touch with my fiancee on the phone and family/friends on Google Talk. I have a feeling we'll be waiting a while for Skype video support now that they've been bought by Microsoft.
edit: There are of course other third party options but I want to use the ones with the greatest adoption and compatibility between devices, which is Skype and Google in my opinion.

I wonder how long 'we' will have to wait for Android 2.3.4 with the Gtalk/video/voice built in? Or maybe Google will release the Gtalk app with this feature on the market soon.
Guess I could always root
Can someone confirm that Gtalk video chat on AT&T only works over WiFi? I can see & chat with people over 3G and it will even say video available and show the video icon but it then tells me that I need WiFi. Is there a way around this? Perhaps an edit to the prop file or even the Gtalk file thru root exployer to enable the video over 3g..?

Which one did you install? I did the auto APK that allows permissions from superuser and it works great but only over WIFI. How did you get it to install with the 3g? And does it work well? I heard it's very buggy with 3g..?

Are you sure? I think Paul's auto install is the version that only works over wifi. I've installed that version off a fresh hard reset twice and no 3g. I believe someone from that thread actually said that apk was for the wfi only version.
UPDATE: Figured it out. I had to find the updated Talk2.apk and I used root exployer to copy over the old APK. Since it was already installed, that's all I had to do. Re-booted and Google Chat now works over 3g. Wow, it logged in 1st attempt after re-boot with no issues and started working right away. Good stuff... One quick question thou. When someone tries to video chat with me, I only get the notification saying someone tried to video chat but you were not on WIFI. I can then go right ahead video chat them back over 3g and everything is fine. So, I only ring for a video chat if I'm in WIFI but can send no problem over 3g..? Is that where we are at with it or is there something I'm missing..?
Tango is another great video calling app on the market its free and it works real good 3G and wifi it also detects who in youre contact list has it

tried video calls to several friends' android mobiles today in the office - all failed. not sure if it's a network or device limitation, none of the friends had samsung phone tho.
are video calls using the "stock" functions generally only supported between devices of the same make/model?

Do they have UK or EURO standard video chat over 3G enabled? I know I did hear that you can video chat within the dialer with SGS2 to SGS2. If anyone wants to dare try this from one SGS2 to another, or any other GSM phone that has the video chat icon in the dialer. let me know.

Yes the phone will still function perfectly over WiFi only.
Only one problem is the phone will not receive OTA updates which is how Verizon updates the system software.
But if I root I can do those myself correct?
So he would still be able to buy games and play without 3G, just to clarify? I'm tried of spending $40 a month when never uses the 3G anyway!
Thanks!

Correct, if you root it you can get a better version of Android than Verizon even offers, and upgrade whenever you like by connecting to your computer.
Games all play with no phone service, and some do offer multiplayer, but only over WiFi anyway. So you're fine.

Dont know how different it is with Verizon but here on Three in the UK I did OTA update over wifi and am still rooted with locked bootloader. Was on 2.3.2 and updated directly from the phone but over wifi to 2.3.3. Because the root was kept I think updating over wifi counts as OTA. My build number ends with .145 just in case someone wants to point out anything I missed doing it over wifi. All I had to do was defrost some of system aps before and refrost them plus a few new ones after the update.

The Verizon OTA updater only works on 3G for some retarded reason. If you root it and put another ROM on I'm sure you can do otherwise, but the stock Verizon one won't let you.
The verizon version of the play is much more difficult to root though.. More steps then other phones... You really don't need root.

Anybody think it's possible to get T-Mobiles Wifi Calling working on an imported Galaxy Nexus? I want to import it but I rely on Wifi Calling at home.
Is it as simple as pulling the APK from a phone that has it or is there more to it?
I'm no Dev, but I've flashed enough roms on my tmous sensation to know that its more than just that .apk.

No, there's a lot more to it.
The #1 thing that's going to be required is a radio interface layer that supports the necessary authentication calls to switch to GAN. This is assuming that the Kineto app and libraries work on ICS.
The thing that killed progress on the Nexus S was that we were never able to get a RIL that supported the necessary auth calls - and as a result it would never switch over to GAN, set up the tunnel, etc.
Kineto responded and blamed Google for "not requesting" support from the vendor for this feature. It's yet to be seen if it will work with the Galaxy Nexus. It's possible but I wouldn't count on it. Seeing as how the RIL is distributed as a closed source blob if it doesn't support it there aren't a lot of options.
At a minimum you need:
- A kernel with kineto_gan or gan-eth build in
- A vendor RIL that supports all of the auth calls to set up gan
- libganril, librilswitch and your vendor ril - librilswitch loads on boot and manages the handoff from the vendor ril (normal calling) to libganril (gan/wifi calling)
- Kineto app, libcryp98, modified libkineto that uses the local libcryp98 for ssl and tunneling.
- libaudio(I think) that has been modified to support the constructor called by kineto - it changed in Gingerbread and had to be modified to support the old call
- build.prop modified to use librilswitch, define the vendor and gan ril
It's been a while since I gave up on the port (After months of getting nowhere with Samsung or Kineto on a RIL and no RIL from other devices working on the Nexus S) so that list may be partially incomplete but it should at least give you a good starting point.
SO badly wish we could get it to work! It's the ONLY thing stopping me from purchasing and importing as I 100% rely on wifi calling at home.

If you can't get service at home, is it possible for you to get a [email protected] that would allow you to use wifi calling transparently? I imagine T-Mobile would be willing to accommodate if you're a contract customer.
I work for T-Mobile and know for a fact that they now offer in home boosters, for people with low reception issues. You should try stopping by your local T-Mo store, or call Customer Care to inquire about it, because there are some restrictions, in regards to qualifying for it. Hope this helps!

CM7 has this built in. Maybe CM9 will also.
I work in a dungeon and we have a cellular repeater in the hallway. It works well with Verizon and AT&T bands, but not so well with Tmobile. So I rely heavily on WiFi Calling while at work.
But since I'm upgrading my Verizon business blackberry to a Galaxy Nexus, I won't have to fool with it anymore.

Exactly. CM7 built it in their roms, so hopefully CM9 will have it as well.
Probably won't happen until we start to see some Tmobile ICS phones with it included out of the box. The App is picky.
However I have heard that they are doing away with WiFi Calling (newer phones don't include it). I think they are moving to a new SIP platform and requires a new unreleased app.

This only happens on some device specific configurations like the glacier. It's a moot point entirely if the RIL does not support the calls used by kineto like the Nexus S RIL.

What features would I sacrifice if buy the T-Mobile Note 2 instead of the N7100?
I know radio is not on the LTE-version
I know tethering feature is not on the T-Mobile Version, as it is apparently a paid-feature
What else?

Well if your willing to root you should go for the tmobile version since is lte the only thing it dosent have yet is screen recording.
And for tethering its already taken care of but at lease with me im not able to use google chrome for pc but I use opera and it works fine streaming downloading and viewing

To be fair, the N7100 doesn't have an LTE radio at all (not even the hardware) whereas the T-Mobile version does have a LTE radio, but it's yet to be enabled (by software).
Tethering feature is not free for any carrier, however if you root, you can enable it "free" although T-Mobile has been increasing their vigilance in that area since they introduced their truly unlimited data plans.
Also, the T-Mobile version doesn't have screen recording (as mentioned above) but more importantly it doesn't have the Multi-View feature, although both should be coming in an update (no idea when though).
If you get the international version, you'll miss out on Wifi Calling and LTE if and when it comes to T-Mobile, not to mention that unless you are in a refarmed area (or partially refarmed) you WON'T get 3G/HSPA+ speeds, but will be limited to EDGE/2G speeds.

Even if you root, you still have to choose between Wifi Calling and Multi-View, not to mention, the extra work + the hassle of resetting binary counter and etc if you need warranty support (although everyone should root sooner or later, it's not for everyone, I myself haven't rooted yet, as multiview minus Wifi Calling isn't worth the trouble). Also what you mean you aren't able to use "google chrome for pc"? What does that even mean? There's a Google Chome app for Android that works... Oh, and the stock browser works fine for "streaming downloading and viewing" too... (not to mention, if you install Flash Player from Adobe, it'll work with the stock browser, but Google has already removed Flash from Chrome, that's why I'm sticking to the stock browser)
Thank you.

Also no one has nor will get screen recording without a separate app download. Samsung canceled the program due to copyright concernes (there is a link in one of the 7100/7105 forums to Samsung's Q&A section about it)

I use google voice for all calls. The outgoing calls I make with google voice are saved in the call log with the intermediate number that google voice generates. It is a known problem with touchwiz. It does not happen if I install CM10 ROM.
Does anyone have a fix for it?
Is there a ROM available with other features of touchwiz, but this problem fixed.
I like the stock ROM with touchwiz and dont want to go with AKOP or cyanogenmod.
The ATT version of Jelly Bean (4.1.1) has a bug where Google Voice integration with the dialer is broken. When you use google voice to make calls, the dialer shows (and records in the call log) the google voice proxy number and not the number you are dialing of the contact you are dialing.
According to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35616192&postcount=29
Some users (on Verizon?) are seeing it work correctly. This leads me to believe that some builds of 4.1.1 for the S3 may have this functioning correctly.
Some questions:
Does anyone know of any ROMs for the S3 that have the correct behavior with Google voice that work on ATT?
Can we take the dialer from the Verizon S3 and use it on an ATT S3?
Any other suggestions for resolution?

any of the stock I 747M Canadian ROMs will display the correct telephone number in the call log when using Google Voice. It's not a bug. It's a sales code feature for the AT&T build. Was the same on ICS
does anyone know if it works with i9300 stock 4.1.1 ROM?
A work around is to install an app called "GVoice callback" from amazon app store. It is not there in android play store.
In GVoice callback settings check auto answer, and sign in with your google voice account.
In google voice app settings set as to never use google voice
Now when you dial a number, GVoice callback will use google voice to call your number and then connect to the person you are calling. It will automatically answer that call, so you are connected.
The call log will only show the original number you dialed.

It just means that it's just another stupid, nonsensical software build characteristic that AT&T has chosen to give to their build of the ROM, likely in the pursuit of every last nickel.
The AT&T and Canadian versions are essentially the same ROM. You can just tweak the build characteristics by changing the Sales Code on the build.prop, others.xml, and a few other files. If you take all the /system/csc and build.prop, and a few other files from the Canadian version and copy them over to the Att version of the ROM, not changing a single .apk, you will get nearly the Canadian version on your phone "magically". The dialer will have a SMS button where the voicemal button is on the att rom, again without changing apks....and Google Voice will function properly on the call logs.
You could modify the apk by decompiling it and editing the correct smali files to make the SecPhone.apk build characteristics the same on an ATT rom as they are on a canadian version....but it's a ton easier just to run the i747M rom. It's a good one
There are no ill effects of running the Canadian Rom on an att gs3 and on the att network, as far as I know and I've been running it for a while. Just make sure your APNs are correct to get the best signal.
I have just been running it since yesterday. I think the battery is better in the Canadian ROM. I didnt like the look of CM10. I prefer the looks of touchwiz calendar and alarm. Moreover the gallery sync with picassa never worked with CM10.

any battery drain like CM10 ? (and what's the final reason...) CM10 is great except for the mysterious battery drain ....

I flashed the Canadian ROM mentioned in this thread, and then flashed the model UCLI5 from the link above (my stock phone did indicate that UCLI5 was used). After that, I had to go to mobile network search once to find ATT, and I notice that only wap.cingular is listed as access point.
1) I kind of feel my mobile reception is worse --- is that expected? or maybe just today's weather is bad ..
2) How do I get back LTE access point? Can I dictate which ap to use (disable LTE when traveling into hiking areas...)
I can verify that the call log shows the correct number (not the weird google voice relay number). However, Google voice's "display voice mail in call log" feature seems not displaying the old voice mails as it does in CM10. Btw, does this Canadian ROM support OTA? Or is it a good idea to get OTA after all (the only benefit as I see, is to avoid data wipe?).
Thanks.
I didnt flash the modem. My modem version is UCDLK3

Use the APN settings shown here.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34945967&postcount=2
Google Voice VM will not show on the call logs in any TouchWiz ROM. Samsung never bothered to make it compatible and don't seem to care about making it work

For ATT voice calls, is there any difference between
[ROM][VLDLK4]Bacon-JB d2att 12/3/12 (Rogers)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34945967#post34945967
[ROM][JB][4.1.1][VLDLK4] Stock SGS3 TouchWiz ROM / Rooted / Debloated (12/06/2012) (Telus)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033132&highlight=vldlk4
?
I'm using the Telus one with modem modem_CWM_I747UCLI5.zip . It quite often cannot find mobile signal (can't make call). I'm using the 4g data, which is ok for me.

Fix for Google Voice outbound call entries
premneo said:
I use google voice for all calls. The outgoing calls I make with google voice are saved in the call log with the intermediate number that google voice generates. It is a known problem with touchwiz. It does not happen if I install CM10 ROM.
Does anyone have a fix for it?
Is there a ROM available with other features of touchwiz, but this problem fixed.
I like the stock ROM with touchwiz and dont want to go with AKOP or cyanogenmod.

There's an app that fixes this. Just search for "GV Outbound Call Log Repair" in the Play store.
