Yes the phone will still function perfectly over WiFi only.
Only one problem is the phone will not receive OTA updates which is how Verizon updates the system software.

But if I root I can do those myself correct?
So he would still be able to buy games and play without 3G, just to clarify? I'm tried of spending $40 a month when never uses the 3G anyway!
Thanks!

I've never seen a game that requires 3G to play. Some that require WIFI, but never 3G

Correct, if you root it you can get a better version of Android than Verizon even offers, and upgrade whenever you like by connecting to your computer.
Games all play with no phone service, and some do offer multiplayer, but only over WiFi anyway. So you're fine.

Dont know how different it is with Verizon but here on Three in the UK I did OTA update over wifi and am still rooted with locked bootloader. Was on 2.3.2 and updated directly from the phone but over wifi to 2.3.3. Because the root was kept I think updating over wifi counts as OTA. My build number ends with .145 just in case someone wants to point out anything I missed doing it over wifi. All I had to do was defrost some of system aps before and refrost them plus a few new ones after the update.

The Verizon OTA updater only works on 3G for some retarded reason. If you root it and put another ROM on I'm sure you can do otherwise, but the stock Verizon one won't let you.

The verizon version of the play is much more difficult to root though.. More steps then other phones... You really don't need root.

Best Buy updated my phone, can i root?

ok, so while best buy was activating my phone (which took a litle shy of 3 hours) , they updated the firmware or the software (whatever it is that was updating at the time). when i had a touch pro 2 i rellied heavily on xda-wifi program to provide internet to my laptop. am i screwed now that best buy updated my phone? how can i get my phone to provide wifi to my laptop? i am in the dark, and even tho i love the evo's speed it still does not compare to a laptop and what it can do. Please help. i feel like if i am in the dark ages without wifi hotspot.
Like the hero when it first came out, wifi tethering in it's classic form doesn't work yet. HOWEVER: Go enable your sprint hotspot app...I believe I heard that haven't locked it down yet so even though you're not paying for the service, it should work in a pinch.
I seen i lot of this going on at best buy while i was waiting in line. They didnt get to mine though.
hmm ill try it, im guessing using the sprint hotspot "free" until they fix it will be uncapped huh?
but now that they updated me, am i going to be able to root? i saw a few post that people were able to get wifitethering after root but it was kinda of tricky.
i, for one dont mind the sprint tv, navigation and other sprint stuff. i actually enjoy using them (i mean im paying for em right?). but i would like a program like xda-wifi (the one i had on my tp2) where all i had to do was run the cab and it installed the program.
is there anything out there now where i can use the wifitethering abilities of the phone while keeping my rom "LIKE" stock with all programs that came out the box?

when i go to sprint hotspot and check the sprint mobile hotspot it gives me "error code 67. Registration failure. your pcs vision username and/or password may be incorrect. please try again"
The (temporary) free hotspot only works on 4G.
ah, that would make sense...seeing as how im in boston and 4g not getting here till 4th quarter 2010...this is insane...what do i do now in order to provide my laptop with internet from my phone? if someone could help me with the root or something. but my phone is updated, can i even do it now?

I don't live in a 4G area. Last night I was able to tether my HERO, my iTouch (I know), my wife's PRE, and my laptop. But today, I get the "error code 67". Darn it!
You can root ur phone after the OTA if you go to http://unrevoked.com/m from your phone browser and download the .apk, then run it... seemed to work pretty good for me at least it appears I'm rooted now (I couldn't get wifi tether to work tho)
On a side note...anyone else use this method or know if this is safe and/or from a trusted source? I usually stick to XDA for mod stuff, I just happened to run across this, this morning someone on Twitter posted it
EDIT: I see the other thread, nvm

the only reason i would root is to get access to get access to wifi tether, otherwise i have no reason to root (im not into removing apps and stuff).
what other threat did you see that had to do with my issue?
the updates started the moment she activated my phone. saw the word 'firmware' and yelled "NO!", reached over her shoulder and hit cancel.
Hope so because my friend was testing my phone and when he gave it back it was doing the update. He told me there was an update available, but he made it seem like it was an update in the market place! Now qik force closes overtime I open it.

Android 2.3.5 Update!!! (July 26,2011)

The official update before the official release. Here's the link: http://android.clients.google.com/p...c0.signed-sojus-GRJ90-from-GRJ22.39fe4c59.zip. Enjoy!
What it does: "These enhancements should increase 4G data speeds and signal strength for users. The software update also improves Wi-Fi connectivity, speakerphone audio quality and adds TTY support for the deaf and hard of hearing,” the wireless carrier announced at that time.
Instructions:
1. To begin, download the update from the link above and rename it to update.zip (.zip being the extension.).
2. Copy the update to the root of your SD card and reboot your phone into recovery. (Hold the Volume up button as you press the Power button.)
3. Choose Recovery from the bootloader menu and you will see a triangle with an exclamation mark.
4. Press the Volume up key a few times till the recovery screen shows up.
5. Once in recovery, select Apply sdcard update.zip and this will begin the flashing process.
6. Once the installation is complete, simply reboot your device!
That’s it, your device should now boot up with the new 2.3.5 firmware!
It also removes the free hotspot apparently. Which was bound to happen sooner or later.
Also, this isn't the first thread on it.
Is it really required to name it update.zip? When you go through stock recovery it lets you pick whatever filename you want.
This was suppose to be a "Pure Google" phone. Why is Sprint screwing around with the build and modifying it to block the HotSpot feature? This is why I got the phone in the 1st place. I guess I'll live on 2.3.4 till further notice.

check your contract.
Is this just a normal update that won't wipe /data?
Stock Rooted ROMs (GRJ90) are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213
You wont lose data but I recommend atleast wiping cache and dalvik cache.
I pushed the volume up key forever and it still never brought up recovery. Am I doing something wrong??

I'm assuming since you need to boot into recovery to flash this update that you also need to have a rooted phone?
Yes you do have to boot into recovery but you don't need a rooted device.
Nevermind I figured it out. Updated with 2.3.5 and now rooted again

check your contract buddy, google builds it so if need be it can be used in their phones. go ahead and stay on 2.3.4 not like you can root your phone and use one of the apps in the market that still work and even tether 4g "for free".
I know you have some sort of entitlement to get something everyone else pays for. I can guess that your one of those people that write bad reviews for amazon free apps, just cause you wanted something else

wow there was really no need for this. my guess is his resentment towards sprint making moves to block tethering is real simple. the nexus on tmobile has free tethering and has had it since launch. the nexus s has had free tethering and still does, the nexus s 4g ships with 4g tethering, yet day 1 we get an update to stop that. whatever i can understand not overloading their already poor 4g network, but now the nexus s 4g is teh only nexus phone without tethering. i mean hell even chromebooks get a year of verizon tethering for free.

How i see it aslong as im able to tether, im fine. Thats why i use the google tether apk... its all good i aint complaining lol. Remember sprint has true UNLMT data not like the other carriers that say unlimites data yett u only get 2gbs to start after that its a charge lol... where does unlimited fall into place when u only provided 2 gbs free to use? Thats why i dont complain about sprint cause they got it going

I believe you are correct.
On the matter of tethering, I have heard some people can still tether while others can not after this update. Could this be a glitch? Sun spots perhaps? Chuck Norris threw up a tethering shield? We don't really know do we? I guess unless Sprint comes out and confirms this, we can only assume they intended to give us an update to block this feature.
I could be misinformed, for that, forgive me in advance and carry on.

If I root my phone, can I use OTA Updates still?

I have read threads where it says that if you root but don't change system files or install other ROMS that I will still receive OTA updates...
I've rooted and ROM'ed every phone I've owned since the old HTC windows mobile bricks and I've decided I am happy the way this phone works stock. I want to be able to stop the camera sound, use titanium backup, and be able to wifi tether, all of which I believe need a rooted phone...
Would changing the above settings get rid of my OTA ability? What exactly would it take to lose the OTA update ability?
Yes, best to be on a stock rooted ROM though. You will lose root after update though. To lose OTA update, a dev would have to disable it or I believe too much modification to the system framework will cause the recovery to detect an incompatible build.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Except for the camera sounds, the others shouldn't prevent you from getting OTA while rooted, though I would question why you would want to, if there are rooted versions of the OTA on XDA (which is an assumption)
With the camera sounds, if you just eliminate the sound files for "shutter" I think you will be ok because it is unlikely those will be files the OTA is looking to patch.
However, if you get rid of the "focus" sound, you need to change the camera.apk for that, and if you do that, the OTA will very likely try to patch camera.apk, find that it has changed, and exit with an assert() failure.
Well, I just would like the OTA updates to work and be done with them. With my old Epic (which was stolen yesterday) I had to always hunt down the OTA update and fight through it. I just kinda want the phone to work.
However, if the camera sounds are going to screw with an OTA, I just might have to live with finding the rooted OTA again....

Does foxfi work with ics roms on our phone yet?
Always, no I mean NEVER EVER accept an OTA. Someone here in the forums will get the OTA, make it into a flashable zip (or tar for Odin), and post it so all of us can enjoy it.
Once you accept an OTA, who knows how long it may take to root the new ROM. I saw this way too may times in the EVO4G thread.

Mark on April 20, 2012 (Motorola Droid RAZR with version 1.81)
If you have any problems, don't leave negative feedback. Contact the Developer. I promise, they will correct the issue your having. These Devs are absolutely amazing! I originally emailed them about Foxfi not working with my DROID RAZR MAXX 4.0.3 ICS leak. They emailed me back and forth for about 45mins while changing code in the software trying to get it going for me but, it didn't work. I received an email today with a new apk link attached and it worked beautifully. You guys are awesome, I would gladly pay you for all your hard work! This priceless app should not be free. It's too valuable for people without root! I will recommend!

AT&T 3G/HSPA not working after Jelly Bean OTA

hi guys,
I have been a lurker for a while, didn't actually have anything meaningful to contribute (to create a new post/thread), i.e. until now!
Bought a galaxy nexus in April when Google started selling it on the Play store. I did not root it and/or modify it in anyway other than trying out a few apps I developed.
Given that background, 3G/HSPA data has not been working on the phone ever since I got and installed the Jelly Bean OTA update.
I thought I also had the Wifi issues that others are facing, but it turned out to be just a setting (Keep WiFi ON during sleep was set to NEVER by the JellyBean update, am pretty sure I didn't do it).
Do you guys have any clue as to what might be happening here? Any troubleshooting tips?
I am on the AT&T prepaid, data was fine until the JellyBean update. My friend with galaxy nexus also started having this problem post the OTA update, but he is AT&T post paid.
any insights???
thank you!
EDIT:
Also, I forgot to mention in my initial post ..
I get good signals and 3G or H also shows up next to the signal bars, but they are in grey.

I didn't call AT&T because I know thats exactly how they are going to reply. If you didn't know it before, AT&T claims the $50 unlimited talk/text/web is unlimited web only for dumb phones but for smartphones you`ll need a separate data top-up. However, I have been using 3G with the same SIM card from November 2011. I had a Nokia N95 till April and then bought the galaxy nexus.....I didn't add the data top-up.
So at first when I started having this problem I thought AT&T finally started blocking 3G on the nexus, but later found out that my friend who is also on AT&T but on a post paid contract also has this same problem from the day he got JB OTA.
Unfortunately, I never went to Phone Information settings until after I got the JB update, so I do not know how it was before the OTA. .

Per this article the updates are expected sometime in late March(end of Q1 2014).
Kitkat & touchwiz combination sounds good but again no idea how many new restrictions it will come with.
4.3 took too long but the wait was not worth it. I am happy with 4.3 on 4.1 bootloader.
I hope there isn't a requirement to update the bootloader.

Do not hold your breath. Before we get even close to thinking we will get this. You will first see Samsung update the note2 Unlocked and international Versions. Then Sprint or at&t Might then consider to update the phone (maybe). If that happens then MAYBE AND only if and a very doubtful maybe. Will T- Mobile decided to send us the update..
There are way more hands in the pot then just want samsung says. The press release says Carrier dependant...

I have a Note 2 t-mobile as well.. Sorry i never disclosed this. and NO There is no update for it. my note 2 is on 4.3 factory
I've got the AT&T model (SGH-I317) of the Note II running 4.1.2. (I317UCALK7), but I'm on T-Mobile now.
I received 4.1.2 OTA after rooting.
I have been unable to get any updates past 4.1.2, even when manually checking.
A few days ago I checked again and instead of telling me there was an error when checking for updates, it told me there was an update (around 185.75 MB). It downloaded, but failed to install.
I'd really like to be able to get the official/TouchWiz 4.4 build installed.
When 4.4 does hit, should I be trying to get the T-Mobile version or the AT&T version? Or does it not matter?
It looks like I won't be able to get the update OTA since I can't get any updates OTA now and I'm stuck on 4.1.2, but surely there will be a dump I can grab online and load myself, right?

So any idea if a TouchWiz ROM with WiFi calling ONLY happen if T-Mobile releases an official ROM first, or is there a way for devs to make a 4.4.2 with WiFi calling based on the component present in the 4.3 build?
T-Mobile could win me for life by doing two things:
1) Improve rural reception (I know they're working on it with all that new 700Mhz spectrum)
2) Release WiFi calling as an app for T-Mobile customers so I could be free to run a non-TW ROM

Why not use Google voice or an alternative app for WiFi calling?

Mostly because I'm not interested in changing my phone number (WiFi calling I only really need for incoming calls), and I want to get SMS texts to my current phone #.
Really wish T-Mobile would just release a WiFi calling app for its customers so that I could go AOSP. I am not liking TouchWiz at all after being on an original Droid w/Bugless Beast and then Nexus devices.

You don't have to. You can choose to have all of your calls answered by Google Voice, or by your actual number.
I think you should give it a go..:good:

I have Google Voice for my voicemail, but obviously if I'm in the office where I have no signal, I'm not going to get the call because it goes right to Google Voice voicemail if I don't have a signal. Also, I need my regular number to accept SMS. Am I missing something?
