Android 2.3.5 Update!!! (July 26,2011) - Nexus S 4G Android Development

The official update before the official release. Here's the link: http://android.clients.google.com/p...c0.signed-sojus-GRJ90-from-GRJ22.39fe4c59.zip. Enjoy!
What it does: "These enhancements should increase 4G data speeds and signal strength for users. The software update also improves Wi-Fi connectivity, speakerphone audio quality and adds TTY support for the deaf and hard of hearing,” the wireless carrier announced at that time.
Instructions:
1. To begin, download the update from the link above and rename it to update.zip (.zip being the extension.).
2. Copy the update to the root of your SD card and reboot your phone into recovery. (Hold the Volume up button as you press the Power button.)
3. Choose Recovery from the bootloader menu and you will see a triangle with an exclamation mark.
4. Press the Volume up key a few times till the recovery screen shows up.
5. Once in recovery, select Apply sdcard update.zip and this will begin the flashing process.
6. Once the installation is complete, simply reboot your device!
That’s it, your device should now boot up with the new 2.3.5 firmware!

It also removes the free hotspot apparently. Which was bound to happen sooner or later.
Also, this isn't the first thread on it.

Is it really required to name it update.zip? When you go through stock recovery it lets you pick whatever filename you want.

This was suppose to be a "Pure Google" phone. Why is Sprint screwing around with the build and modifying it to block the HotSpot feature? This is why I got the phone in the 1st place. I guess I'll live on 2.3.4 till further notice.

check your contract.

Is this just a normal update that won't wipe /data?

Stock Rooted ROMs (GRJ90) are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078213
You wont lose data but I recommend atleast wiping cache and dalvik cache.

I pushed the volume up key forever and it still never brought up recovery. Am I doing something wrong??

I'm assuming since you need to boot into recovery to flash this update that you also need to have a rooted phone?

Yes you do have to boot into recovery but you don't need a rooted device.

Nevermind I figured it out. Updated with 2.3.5 and now rooted again

I like the update...but I like the option to blacken the messaging app background. Any way I can change that??

check your contract buddy, google builds it so if need be it can be used in their phones. go ahead and stay on 2.3.4 not like you can root your phone and use one of the apps in the market that still work and even tether 4g "for free".
I know you have some sort of entitlement to get something everyone else pays for. I can guess that your one of those people that write bad reviews for amazon free apps, just cause you wanted something else

wow there was really no need for this. my guess is his resentment towards sprint making moves to block tethering is real simple. the nexus on tmobile has free tethering and has had it since launch. the nexus s has had free tethering and still does, the nexus s 4g ships with 4g tethering, yet day 1 we get an update to stop that. whatever i can understand not overloading their already poor 4g network, but now the nexus s 4g is teh only nexus phone without tethering. i mean hell even chromebooks get a year of verizon tethering for free.

How i see it aslong as im able to tether, im fine. Thats why i use the google tether apk... its all good i aint complaining lol. Remember sprint has true UNLMT data not like the other carriers that say unlimites data yett u only get 2gbs to start after that its a charge lol... where does unlimited fall into place when u only provided 2 gbs free to use? Thats why i dont complain about sprint cause they got it going

I believe you are correct.
On the matter of tethering, I have heard some people can still tether while others can not after this update. Could this be a glitch? Sun spots perhaps? Chuck Norris threw up a tethering shield? We don't really know do we? I guess unless Sprint comes out and confirms this, we can only assume they intended to give us an update to block this feature.
I could be misinformed, for that, forgive me in advance and carry on.

Best Buy updated my phone, can i root?

ok, so while best buy was activating my phone (which took a litle shy of 3 hours) , they updated the firmware or the software (whatever it is that was updating at the time). when i had a touch pro 2 i rellied heavily on xda-wifi program to provide internet to my laptop. am i screwed now that best buy updated my phone? how can i get my phone to provide wifi to my laptop? i am in the dark, and even tho i love the evo's speed it still does not compare to a laptop and what it can do. Please help. i feel like if i am in the dark ages without wifi hotspot.
Like the hero when it first came out, wifi tethering in it's classic form doesn't work yet. HOWEVER: Go enable your sprint hotspot app...I believe I heard that haven't locked it down yet so even though you're not paying for the service, it should work in a pinch.
I seen i lot of this going on at best buy while i was waiting in line. They didnt get to mine though.
hmm ill try it, im guessing using the sprint hotspot "free" until they fix it will be uncapped huh?
but now that they updated me, am i going to be able to root? i saw a few post that people were able to get wifitethering after root but it was kinda of tricky.
i, for one dont mind the sprint tv, navigation and other sprint stuff. i actually enjoy using them (i mean im paying for em right?). but i would like a program like xda-wifi (the one i had on my tp2) where all i had to do was run the cab and it installed the program.
is there anything out there now where i can use the wifitethering abilities of the phone while keeping my rom "LIKE" stock with all programs that came out the box?

when i go to sprint hotspot and check the sprint mobile hotspot it gives me "error code 67. Registration failure. your pcs vision username and/or password may be incorrect. please try again"
The (temporary) free hotspot only works on 4G.
ah, that would make sense...seeing as how im in boston and 4g not getting here till 4th quarter 2010...this is insane...what do i do now in order to provide my laptop with internet from my phone? if someone could help me with the root or something. but my phone is updated, can i even do it now?

I don't live in a 4G area. Last night I was able to tether my HERO, my iTouch (I know), my wife's PRE, and my laptop. But today, I get the "error code 67". Darn it!
You can root ur phone after the OTA if you go to http://unrevoked.com/m from your phone browser and download the .apk, then run it... seemed to work pretty good for me at least it appears I'm rooted now (I couldn't get wifi tether to work tho)
On a side note...anyone else use this method or know if this is safe and/or from a trusted source? I usually stick to XDA for mod stuff, I just happened to run across this, this morning someone on Twitter posted it
EDIT: I see the other thread, nvm

the only reason i would root is to get access to get access to wifi tether, otherwise i have no reason to root (im not into removing apps and stuff).
what other threat did you see that had to do with my issue?
the updates started the moment she activated my phone. saw the word 'firmware' and yelled "NO!", reached over her shoulder and hit cancel.
Hope so because my friend was testing my phone and when he gave it back it was doing the update. He told me there was an update available, but he made it seem like it was an update in the market place! Now qik force closes overtime I open it.

Since it's their app, I would assume it's within the realm of possibility. This is the sole reason I don't use it.
how does verizon charge you ? through how much data it uses ?
explanation
You will not get caught I have used this hack since the phone came out this changes the log in details to bypass Verizon login you will not be charged for nothing you have a unlimited data package for all Droid devices this hack tricks the phone to make it look like its coming through the phone data plan not hotspot app.
This is rather exciting to me. The only reason besides bloat removal I wanted root is to support tethering for free.
Thank you!

The assumption of "will not get caught" based on "have not gotten caught" is pretty flawed. It's very possible that you have, in fact, been caught, and Verizon is investigating how to handle the masses of people abusing this service.
If you want to take the chance, so be it. I choose not to

You are removing the "sip." from part of the identification. You are exploiting a security flaw in Verizon's authentication (a very stupid one, in fact). You are still publishing information from your phone to authenticate to use the feature that will identify you. Additionally, as I said, this is Verizon's app... it, too, can publish information about your device and what you do with it. Verizon loves analytics, you don't think they're taking info about your usage?
Let's not fight guys. I love healthy debates but the Eris forum was always held to a higher standard...let's not be like other forums and flame all the time...both of you have great arguments and I'm sure of Verizon does see this..they might not even care cause so few ppl do it.

Of coarse they check your usage but they cannot pin point were its coming from the hotspot app shows up as your using data from the phone not from hot spot if.it showed hotspot you would he charged and I havent seen it on my bill. Also I know in fact it will never show but I guess everyone's entitled to there opinion so I'm done talking about it.

Having a bit of insight into Verizon's inner workings, I would rather not take the risk. I will wait for unlock, perm root, cyanogenmod, and the wifi tether app that Verizon doesn't have control over and can't track.

Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA Premium App
WiFi tether in the same category as wireless tether does support infrastructure WiFi tether does.infrastructure all you have to do is get root Bs kernel that support .and configure the.app device profile settings to epic and it will pull up hotspot and use that. Mode as infrastructure that's why this hack is better you don't have to root is you already get free hotspot with this hack. Same thing as using any tether just a bit faster
i have been using this hack since my lg dare days wired tether. Been using at least 5 years.
Quick question maybe a dumb one, I performed these steps listed in OP. Are you using the verizon hotspot app from that point? Do you just ignore the message from verizon and continue to use the app? When I got to that point I just stopped as I don't want additional charges. (Vzw is expensive enough) just curious I may not even use this as perm root will b available soon enough we hope and at that point ill be looking for the wifi teather app that is now no longer availavailablefrom the market. Just wondering for the sake of not being able to locate it via 4shared yet.

[Q] How do you get free wifi tether On Dinc2

I would expect you have to be rooted and I'm not sure if that is totally available yet, if so can someone please tell me how. Bottom line I need my wifi tether to work again soon. If someone can help please do...

Go to google and type in wireless tether then hit I'm feeling lucky.
I Installed 2.0.7 since the 3.X versions didnt seem ready yet
I thought all the other carriers except Sprint removed access to rooted wifi tethering. I'm on Sprint with Evo 4g..... And its still awesome over here. Come on in the waters fine .....the unlimited "Everything Data" and free mobile to mobile kicks much ass. You aren't a data slave counting every gigabyte on Sprint..... Good luck with those other carriers! I have no clue why reasonable adults who own smartphones that inhale data at ever increasing rates- buy network and phone service in multiyear agreements to be restricted in data usage. Can I call it what it is? People are just stupid! And I find it hilarious.... You suck data thru a straw and I got a wide own fire hydrant that I pay less for! Call quality excellent, data blazing fast and unlimited ..... Hilarious.

You HAVE to be rooted first. To do that go to alpharevx website, dowload their tool, that will give you s off. Make sure ur pc is hooked to the internet and when u r done choose to flash clockwork mod. Then download gingersense rom, then power off ur phone, then power it on by holding down power and volume down. Then, go into recovery and choose install ROM and pick where u put the gingersense ROM, choose it, then flash it, then reboot to system. I like the Barnacle tether app on the market, but of course none of this is relevant if u have already updated ur phone to 2.3, ur screwed unless u buy an xtc clip

I had Sprint but thankfully I'm back on Verizon, Sprint has less towers, even though it worked wherever Verizon did, half the time it was roaming off of Verizon towers where u CAN'T get high speed data. O, Sprint terminated my contract because of that, I was where there was no Sprint signal, only roaming off of Verizon for an extended period of time so they cut me off, no warning, said in the fine print I had x amount of roaming minutes, even though it.was.free. they would not reactivate my phone either, so when I got back home I happily went back to Verizon, o, and I'm unlimited too. Sprint is cheaper though, I will give you that, but u can keep it.

Nope its easy. Once you have root all you have to do is install the app and run it. Give it su privileges when it asks. Hit menu after running it to configure it, then enable it and you are all set
Like I said Barnacle IS on the market, its free and u can use it after u have root. And if u meant is rooting hard, well it depends on you. I'm pretty computer literate, though I can't write code or anything like that, it was easy for me, I used the Linux version though because the Windows version was not working, might throw u for a loop, I don't know, but I hear the Windows version is now working, u can read about how to.step by step in the threads that talk about s off I believe, though I gave you a general idea above. You need to go to HTC website and download the sync drivers, I forgot to mention that, and after u install sync, uninstall the program, just don't go in and manually remove the drivers, that's what u need. Good luck, pm me if u need more info maybe I can help, I don't mind helping people I would hope they would do the same for.me

If you don't think Sprint will be close behind in choking off that "unlimited data" then you must be....can I call you what you are? Blind. I have 2 more years of unlimited Verizon data, so I figure you and I will be hitting that tiered data plan at about the same time.....
First, this belongs in general/discussion. Second I'm on Verizon, and, not once worried about my unlimited data.. all existing customers can stay unlimited as long as they don't change their plan. I can even renew my contract, keep my same plan and still be unlimited.
EDIT: J.I.C.Y.W... http://www.google.com/gwt/x?gl=us&client=ms-android-verizon&q=verizon+unlimited+data+plan&hl=en&ei=O20hTujjC6bhlgfD2ubqAQ&ved=0CAkQFjAA&source=m&rd=1&u=http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/05/verizon-unlimited-data-plan-july-7_n_890613.html
NoClue....
I used the Windows version of AlphaRev a couple of days ago. It is now working great. The hardest part was typing in the access code it gives you (a string of about 18 characters -- I missed one the first time I tried. Nothing bad happened, I just had to start over.)
Rooting process takes about 5 minutes. I tried CyanogenMod 7.1 beta for DInc 2, but went back to Gingersense, which is essentially the OTA Gingerbread update but with permanent root. I had been using CM7 on my previous phone (OG Droid) and liked it, but I think the gingersense is just a little more elegant looking. Keeps the best of Sense and Gingerbread and lets you get rid of any crap you don't want.
Once you are rooted getting wireless tethering is as simple as installing an app.
If youre rooted, cm7 comes with a native free wifi tether. if youre not running cm7 the barnacle app from market works fine, there are other free wifi tether apps that you can google search for. if youre running a stock rom you can use the vzw hotspot for free wifi tether access by using this hack.

It's the best wifi tether app I've found. The market will refuse to allow you to install it on the Dinc2 due to Verizon forbidding it, but installing the APK directly works fine.
If you need the stock Gingerbread ROM: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/cm_vivow_full-4.zip

Once rooted I think you can even just use the stock wifi router app, when I wasn't rooted I tried it and it pulled up a Verizon webpage. now it doesn't. haven't been charged yet..

[Q] VZW Nexus and Tethering?

How do you guys suppose they are going to stop it and force you to use their 30$ "service"?
I only ask cause I was experiencing 4g probs on my "rented" RAZR which I have rooted.
I only rooted it so I could use tethering(sql hack) while we were working on my office's network outage.
When I experienced service "cycling" i called. I could not keep a data connection. I had cell service and could receive calls and texts, but data would just cycle thru 1, 3, 4g, then none. When I called the rep did some digging and quickly kicked me to a "Tier2" rep.
So I tell him my problem. he responds "well, could be your SIM(which is free to replace) or to try a Factory defaults reset." He then proceeds to tell me about free apps for backing up. Something that does not require root. I assume something like titanium backup which is a main reason for many to root their phones and big VZW knows this. This is #1. He then proceeds to tell me about amazons app store, which "offers 1 free app a day". Big gripe from companies is that we rooters are "stealing" paid apps(I have stolen 1 payed app, then proceeded to buy it when the black market went under). That is #2. Without me telling him too much about myself, he goes "so, you seem pretty tech savy with the droid". This is #3.
so with 1, 2, and 3 in mind. Have you seen things like this on other 4g devices. I know they can see it(root). I know they have a way to jack your phone if you are "stealing" the entitlements check, but are they using it? The GSM version has builtin wifi tethering. Do you think that these "BUGS" they found which gave us 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 would have something to do with them trying to make sure we can't "steal" our bandwidth we pay for?
Food for thought. Thoughts? questions? concerns?
Hopefully there isn't any restrictions because I occasionally tether my transformer for easier viewing.

It says right in the press release that they are blocking tethering and charging $20/month for the service. Just like every other VZW phone.

Well yeah they're "officially" blocking it, but with root and whatnot, we should be able to tether freely, hopefully. I tether from my OG all the time, even though it's "blocked"

Yes you should be able to with root. Just like any other vzw phone.

I know they are blocking wifi tethering but you should still be able to do wired via PDANet(or similiar). but yes, root will be required. on the Rezound they went as far as to add a system process labelled "tetherguard". fun times

I have PDAnet installed on my Droid RAZR, and it works just fine. No redirecting of websites to VZW page to sign up for a tether plan. When I had my DX rooted with GB, I used Wireless Tether and I was directed to VZW's page for tethering plans. RAZR is not rooted either.
I heard about a program called EasyTether that supposedly will allow you to tether without having to root your phone? Has anyone tried it/think it will work?
Tethering works fine after root - no app required (edit: Its now checking subscriptions, but PDANet still works).
WiFi tethering does not work after root on ANY app* - further development will be needed.
*Pretty sure that blocktether thing has returned.
I've been searching relentlessly for a way to get Wireless Tether for Root Users to work on my brand new VZW Galaxy Nexus.
No dice. The Dev has been notified.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257
If you install the latest BETA version and select the Samsung Galaxy S2 under device profiles, it ALMOST works, throughs in error in the log: "Activating WiFi interface.... FAILED"
Totally crushed about this. Not sure if it's happening due to a VZW side safeguard or if it's simply a progrmaming issue the dev can fix :\

Are you saying that you were able to get USB tethering working, after root with the native app? I am rooted, and when I tried to enable USB tethering, I got a pop up message that said "checking subscription plans". ????

Ya the stock tethering options still check subscription status.
PDANet does work, though, so that's what I'm using until a working wireless tether surfaces.
I'm planning on rooting specifically to use the built in hotspot.
Hopefully someone develops a workaround soon.

I am rooted and can not use the built in hotspot, nor USB tethering.
ROM developers are working on a solution now.
Download SQLite Editor from the market. On YouTube, there are many videos that show how to change the wifi tether permissions using sqlite. You have to be rooted.
I'm not rooted, so I use PDAnet with no problems on my laptop. There is a one time $20 charge to be able to use https websites.
I also use my Bluetooth to tether my iPad and surf the Web that way.

I found this video for the Bionic -

I haven't rooted yet so I haven't experimented, but maybe someone can check it out and see if something similar will work with the GNex.
I don't get the "people root so they can steal apps" argument...you realize you don't have to root to download and install apps in Android, right? You get apps the same exact way rooted or non-rooted.

I spent a while earlier today looking around in sqlite for something to edit to enable tethering but no dice. I did see some interesting stuff pertaining to throttling though, i.e. reset date and stuff like that
Has anyone tried to use Barnacle? Worked on the Chrage.

[Q] Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot charges?

Hi guys...i just noticed that there is a native option for wifi tethering on the gnex. If i use this is verizon going to charge me ridiculous amounts? I know that the wifi tether app doesn't but will this?
Thanks!! (i know i'm sorta late on figuring this one out )
All carriers are going to charge you if you tether. The key is to do it only when absolutely necessary so you don't draw attention.
I should add I have no idea what app you're talking about, but if you're using a stock ROM, they're going to know immediately that you're tethering.

its not stock...its cm9..its not an app. its just in the settings. (most carriers remove this...thats why i'm wondering since this is a google phone it would not be removed)

No custom roms usually disable the feature (Verizon Provisioning Removed) where the information gets relayed back to the carrier and it looks like you're just using data on your phone like any other app. But don't go using 50gb+ a month... might seem a little suspicious.

50GB?!!?!? how the heck do you do that...coolio...thats what i wanted to hear.
I usually only tether when i'm on vacation and rarely at that...i just dont want a $50 charge on the bill
If you want to be smart, play it safe and use the WiFi Tether app you spoke of. You wont get caught using WiFi Tether.

Haha. Some people just get power-hungry and start downloading movies and music from PirateBay or use it as their one and only internet connection, and they pass 50gb in no time.
If you are not using a stock ROM Verizon will not know if you use native tethering. I have been using it for a while and it has been fine.
