I have read threads where it says that if you root but don't change system files or install other ROMS that I will still receive OTA updates...
I've rooted and ROM'ed every phone I've owned since the old HTC windows mobile bricks and I've decided I am happy the way this phone works stock. I want to be able to stop the camera sound, use titanium backup, and be able to wifi tether, all of which I believe need a rooted phone...
Would changing the above settings get rid of my OTA ability? What exactly would it take to lose the OTA update ability?
Yes, best to be on a stock rooted ROM though. You will lose root after update though. To lose OTA update, a dev would have to disable it or I believe too much modification to the system framework will cause the recovery to detect an incompatible build.

Except for the camera sounds, the others shouldn't prevent you from getting OTA while rooted, though I would question why you would want to, if there are rooted versions of the OTA on XDA (which is an assumption)
With the camera sounds, if you just eliminate the sound files for "shutter" I think you will be ok because it is unlikely those will be files the OTA is looking to patch.
However, if you get rid of the "focus" sound, you need to change the camera.apk for that, and if you do that, the OTA will very likely try to patch camera.apk, find that it has changed, and exit with an assert() failure.
Well, I just would like the OTA updates to work and be done with them. With my old Epic (which was stolen yesterday) I had to always hunt down the OTA update and fight through it. I just kinda want the phone to work.
However, if the camera sounds are going to screw with an OTA, I just might have to live with finding the rooted OTA again....

Does foxfi work with ics roms on our phone yet?
Always, no I mean NEVER EVER accept an OTA. Someone here in the forums will get the OTA, make it into a flashable zip (or tar for Odin), and post it so all of us can enjoy it.
Once you accept an OTA, who knows how long it may take to root the new ROM. I saw this way too may times in the EVO4G thread.

If you have any problems, don't leave negative feedback. Contact the Developer. I promise, they will correct the issue your having. These Devs are absolutely amazing! I originally emailed them about Foxfi not working with my DROID RAZR MAXX 4.0.3 ICS leak. They emailed me back and forth for about 45mins while changing code in the software trying to get it going for me but, it didn't work. I received an email today with a new apk link attached and it worked beautifully. You guys are awesome, I would gladly pay you for all your hard work! This priceless app should not be free. It's too valuable for people without root! I will recommend!

Hello- I've been reading around this site and I am not sure if what I've found is accurate, I could use the help of those that are informed.
I'm new to Android having only gotten my first incredible yesterday. I tried using unrevoked (v. 3.21 to the best of my knowledge) on windows after installing the appropriate drivers and was unsuccessful two or three times. It would hang at waiting for root or 'we can't get root,' were the two messages I'd receive.
I reset to factory from the bootloader and tried this again on my Mac machine- this was different but still unsuccessful. It would still say 'waiting for root,' however the phone itself was stuck powered on with nothing on the screen. It took me unplugging the mini USB and removing the battery to finally get it to power back on and show something on the screen.
With that said, is there an update from Verizon that causes unrevoked to no longer work? I read that somewhere but am unsure how recent the information is.
Secondly- what I really want to do is enable the Wifi Hotspot feature without having to fork MORE money over to Verizon- am I going down the right path to enable this?
Lastly- can someone please provide a good thread I can read up on regarding handling future updates for Android OS- I assume OTA updates are disabled once rooted, how do I continue to make sure my OS is up to date when this is disabled?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You most likely have the latest OTA update, which patches the exploit that UnrEVOked 3.21 used to get root. They are currently working on a new exploit for the recent OTA update now.
If you want free wifi tethering, you don't exactly need to root. This'll do the trick: http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/showthread.php?54386-Android-OS-htc-incredible-free-wifi-tethering
Usually the OTA's get incorporated into later ROM releases, so all you'll have to do is download and install the new release for your custom ROM.
If you prefer to have a stock, but rooted ROM, you can download the rooted stock ROMs that usually come out after OTA updates.
Or, usually, there are leaked updates released before the official update comes out. Those are also rooted and usually posted here as well, if you want early release things.
I hope I helped you out, need anything else cleared up?

Woah. I've been searching these forums for two weeks looking for this, and thought that my only choice is to root the dang phone. Does this not alert VZW about the usage, or can they only tell how much data is being used?
I just tested this with the "wifi hotspot" app that's on the (unrooted) Incredible, and holy crap it worked! If this works out then I've just solved my only major gripe with having the Incredible on Verizon!

I agree- this works wonderfully just with the default preloaded Mobile Hotspot app.
I am wondering if there is still any reason for me to unlock the phone.

By changing the dun nai, its supposed to disable the "tell VZW I'm using this app" thing. I'm not sure about this one, but I think they can still see you're using data, just not that its from the hotspot app. Just know, if they can somehow track/tell you're using it and you get caught, I'm not to be held liable lol. Blame the guy who made the post I showed you lol. Just a little disclaimer, just in case.

Sure. What I mean is- I originally wanted to root it only to enable the functionality of the Wifi Hotspot. What functionality can I add by rooting my phone in addition to this?
I don't really see the advantage of having to update my ROM manually any time there is an Android OS update- what's the value?

SetCPU was a big selling point in my eyes back when I first rooted. You can underclock the processor while the screen is off to help save battery. But, that kind of stuff is built into some kernels now (Kings BFS6, for example). But, if you want your phone to run a bit faster and smoother, you can overclock. I also like running different ROMs with themes and stuff. The customization is pretty neat imo. Like on this ROM: I have a few (6) quick settings I can change in the notifications bar. Just little conveniences like that win me over lol. And, there are leaked versions of official releases incorporated in to ROMs earlier than they're rolled out. I was running Froyo back in late July lol. Applying different ROMs/updates to the ROMs isn't hard or inconvenient at all... Only when your battery is low does it suck lol. If you wanna remove bloatware, no problem. And, if you ever mess up somewhere, you can usually apply a Nandroid backup you previously made and be good to go.

Like most others you will wake up one morning and it will be on 76, there is a way to do it manually but you need to get your msl. Google update prl manually if you are concerned about. It won't make that much difference unless you travel alot, roam a lot, or you are in one of the areas that had a roaming tower switch.
Rethinking this prl error thing. I Odin'd back to DI18 and tried the PRL update and still no go. Let the OTA update to EC05, no go. Called Sprint and he (of course) had me go through a few different resets and still no go, even got me locked in an activation loop. So somewhere along the way my update ability was broken. Was it something in DK28? Since it broke GPS's and some USB connections. Not sure but luckily with insurance I will be getting a new phone next week to see what works. My g/f's phone has gone mostly the same path as mine but prl updates fine. All phones are not created equal.
It's Sprint's problem. I wish they just would know and admit that. We're stuck at 60676 for now anyway. Manual updates are the way to go if you must. I think folks have been using QPST.
Sprint has basically acknowledged the issue on their support forum. I tried to post the URL but this site wouldn't let me.
Of course, acknowledgement and fixing it are 2 very different things. I don't think they know the root cause particularly at the technician level. They just send you through some resets and then offer to swap your phone.
I wonder if this will be fixed in the next OTA update?

Hmm...maybe. But why do the new phones work, unless it is something in the first batch of Epics that went out, if so then why does the 2nd phone on my account update fine? If both phones purchased at the same time were not updating then I wouldn't question it, but the fact that 1 does and 1 don't bothers me and makes me feel like something in the rooting process or ROM flashing knocked it out. I have seen the posts on Sprint, but I think it is due to the amount of reports that they have gotten and have no idea what is wrong. Once they get my phone back, they will have another one to work with.

My phone updated fine when I got it in mid Jan 2011. I started getting update errors about a week BEFORE the 2.2 OTA update. I have never rooted and am completely stock. My guess is there is a software glitch on some phones or the servers that is preventing the handshake between the phone and the servers for updating. It could be that Sprint has unknowingly programed their servers for some ESN's not to update. I just hope they find the root cause and fix it.

Maybe...certain ESNs? Trying to lock out first Gen Epics? Every theory I come up with gets blown. I imagine both phones on my account are the same gen purchased a week after they came out. I guess I have to let it go and be happy with a new phone next week.
Do you BONSAI?
I'm rooted and have been for a while. I just switched to Team-Nocturnals_Shoooter_RLS3.1.1 rom. I have a problem where sometimes I can't recieve messages on the stock messaging app, I notice this because I have Gingerbread Ghostly constlantly running and that app recieves the message but not the stock messging app. I also don't recieve calls every once in a while.
The first time I ever noticed this was about a month ago when I was running a Going-Green rom but it only happened when i switched to that Rom, never happened before then. So I upgraded my radio to 2.15.00.08.08 because that Rom ran so smoothly on my phone and wanted to keep it. The problem kept happening so i switched to another Rom and it happened on that one as well.
I've switched between different roms probably 5 to 8 times and I still don't recieve messages or calls sometimes and I don't know how to fix it. A while back, user on here was nice and tried helping me out by telling me it could have to do with Google voice, so i completely deactivated Google voice and its still happening.
I would really appreciate any input and info you may have on this and please help if you can. Also can I downgrade my radio? Would that help? Thanks.
What radio version do you have? The newer radios will not allow you to downgrade. But then again, you wouldn't want to downgrade your radio anyway.
When I had this issue it was because Google Voice completely F'ed my phone. My messaging wouldn't work no matter what ROM I flashed. I ended up fixing the phone by accident as I was unrooting it to take it into the store. Here is a link on what I did with mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18399552&postcount=2
Follow that process and fully unroot your phone back to bone stock. Once you've got it back to bone stock try sending yourself a message and see if it works. If it does then feel free to unroot once again and reflash whatever ROM you wish. If it still doesnt work then, while unrooted, make sure your phone has accepted all of the OTA updates from Sprint and then update your profile. If it STILL doesnt work then give Sprint tech support a call and ask them what the ## code is to reset your phone's network signal. I wrote it down somewhere from when I tried it on mine but I cannot find that damn piece of paper. If NONE of that works for you then you may have to take it into Sprint. Good news though, it's already fully unrooted so you don't have to worry about the risk of the techs denying you.
Let me know if any of this helps.
I just switched to decks gingerbread rom which is the first time I've gone without sense and I've had no problems so far. Could it have to do with sense?

Doubtful it is sense. What rom were you using before?
I doubt it was Sense because I was having the same problem with an AOSP ROM.
I was using a lot of different sense 3.0/3.5 roms like gruesomewolfs Rom, hybrid beta 8.5, sinister Rom, I've tried almost all.

I'm trying synergy non-godmode for the first time now and will see if I have problems with it. It doesn't make any sense to me at all why I keep having these problems.
Im trying to avoid un-rooting then re-rooting but will do it if that fixes it.

It's always best to flash each of those separately. Flash the radio and then reboot the phone. Then flash the wimax and reboot the phone. And so on and so on. I flashed one of those all in one packages and I had problems with getting everything set properly. So I did them one by one and they worked flawlessly. I then read, afterwards, that its best to do them individually. I'm not exactly sure why....but that's what has worked best for me and apparently for the majority of other people. So I recommend going back and flashing each of those individually to make sure they all installed correctly.

So I'm a first time Android user, just picked up the Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus. Rooted it with the r3 superboot image. Mainly I just want root access so I can enable tethering, I don't really plan on doing much else with it. After rooting, does that mean I can no longer receive OTA updates? And if so, how would I update Android from here?
Thanks everyone!
Also I should note that other than running a web server, I'm relatively new with linux console as well.

you will receive. And it should update just fine, if you didnt change anything in system.
Awesome, thanks.
Also, in case anyone finds this, a lot of tethering apps weren't working for me. Couldn't start ad-hoc and create an SSID. The free one that I found that did work right away was Tethering Widget.

OTAs will either not install, or will install but remove your root. If you want to preserve your system and not chance anything just wait a few for the update packages to come out and flash them manually.
As far as tethering, I'd take it easy for a little while. Just rooting and installing a 3rd party app doesn't instantly let you tether the Verizon version. They still have their own tracking software thats going to block/ask you to pay for it. You're best off waiting for people to figure out what files need to be removed to make sure VZW isn't watching your tethering activity.
Awesome thanks for the heads up. As long as i can avoid having to reroot and set up all my personalization, then that would be great. So these update packages, do i install them the same way by booting into bootloader mode and installing it with fastboot?
And i think my last question will be is where is a good spot for me to pay attention to in order to find out when evdnts like these discoveries on tethering happen and the updates released?
Again thanks for being so helpful and covering my ass This is a pretty cool community
Is there a way to stop updates if you're rooted?
Hey guys, I'm new here, so this thread is probably on here somewhere, but oh well. I can't update my S3 OTA or through Kies. I know there is an update, as my friend got it fine on his yesterday (it's the one with the brightness slider in notification center). On OTA, it says communication failed every single time, then says up to date. I have tried clearing data and all that as well. And in Kies, it also says I have the latest firmware, even though I know I don't. Any ideas? I really don't want this happening when Jelly Bean comes out. Oh yeah, I'm not rooted or anything by the way, I'm still on stock for now.
I have the same exact issue. I think it has something to do with ATT and the phone not being set up right in their system. Did you by chance have an iPhone before your S3 and use the same Sim card?
Mine wouldn't find the ota on the phone. I searched around here and found a thread someone had started that has instructions on how to download the flashable zip and install it via CWM. Worked like a champ. If you are rooted this is the way you'll want to go

I've always recommended returning whatever device you have back to 100% stock (as it was out of the box) before taking any official updates. I've heard ppl say they can take them just fine while still rooted - but they lose root. Sometimes you can simply re-root, sometimes you have to wait for a new exploit to be discovered before you can root again. In light of this, I always wait a week (sometimes less) after a new OTA (Over The Air) update is released, just to be sure I can regain root immediately. Welcome to the wonderful world of Android OS!!!
[edit] to answer your post about not being able to take the last OTA update. Have you tried a factory reset? Through Android Recovery? You will lose personal settings and contacts if you dont back them up. But, it may solve your update issue. Another thing I know, that a lot of ppl do is - as soon as you buy a new device, such as the awesome Galaxy S III, is to immediately do the factory reset. (Who knows how many employees have goofed around with the new toys they just got in stock)
I had the same problem with not being able to get the OTA update on my S3. Turns out it was a bad sim. As soon as I got a new sim from AT&T everything worked fine. Wish I would have done that first cause I spent hours on the phone with AT&T and Samsung trying to fix the problem. Good luck. Hope that works for you.

Same issue here. Just spent a couple hours this Saturday at an AT&T store - end result is that they are swapping it out under the manufacture 1 year warranty.
Sim replacement did not fix it for me.
Tech support over the the stores land line says that the option to push OTA to phone is greyed out and not selectable with my account.
They are sending me a new phone so we'll see.

Just did a factory reset, and it didn't help at all. Now I've got to get everything back on my phone. Coming from iPhone, I will say that Apple has a heck of a lot better backup system. I do 0refer my GS3 though. Ok so any suggestions now?

you've tried to update over cell network AND WiFi... correct? same error each time?
I'm not sure what else to suggest except trying a new sim card like someone else suggested... beyond that, a replacement device. Sorry man, wish I could be more useful...
[edit] The only other thing I can think to try would be to completely remove all your current USB Drivers for Samsung from your PC and reboot the PC, then re-install the USB Drivers, and try Kies again. If it still doesn't work, try a different PC.
Well I'm going to try a different computer, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to an AT&T store. Thanks for all the help guys.
