Hit post #11 for a walkthrough on replacing the earpiece.
Funny but kinda looking for serious replies as it is quite important
Nokia AAC-0510 seems working. (Chinese) http://www.itfunz.com/thread-84490-1-1.html
Somewhere on this forum is a link to a Russian blogger who pulled one apart and (apparently) swapped out speakers.
Just to report back i received the k850i earpiece today and successfully replaced it with the original one from the Defy, works perfectly and no modding at all except flattening the terminals slightly, its a very snug fit but is working fine and is much clearer than the original one in terms of call quality. Maybe the mods could sticky this or something incase anyone else has the earpiece problem. Total cost of repair £1.99 for earpiece and about 30minutes of my time !! much better than sending to motorolla for weeks on end in my opinion.
Cheers

That is great info to know! I am more confident in getting a Defy now knowing I can fix it on my own.
Any guide with pictures for us?
well done wizard123
i hope i will never have to do what you did with your speaker but... who knows?
yes a detailed guide with picture and tools-to-use would be a nice idea - really useful for all the people who void the warranty
A quick question...
What's the waterproofing situation like? Is there a membrane between the earpiece and the outside world or is it built into the Defy earpiece?
No problem guys, i hope you never have the issues but i know it did hit alot of people including me and motorolla claim mines was out of warranty being only 3 months old ?! but hey i dont have time to argue or mess about as i need my phone.
I will try to get some pictures up but in the meantime follow these steps it is so so simple :
1. Remove battery & SIM card
2. Remove the 7 screws from around the phone casing and the 2 silver screws underneath the back cover. ( You will need very small torx bits )
3. Separate the two halfs of the casing, ( very stiff and fiddly but dont be affraid to use a little force )
4. Carefully lift off the 2 connectors on the main PCB board and lift it out ( careful not to lose the yellow rubber washers )
5. Use a small pair of pliers or long nosed pliers to gently grib either side of the earpiece and slowly wiggle side to side untill it comes loose and lifts out ( This takes patience as it is very well glued in but does free off )
6. Take your new K850i earpiece and place into the slot with the two springy copper terminals facing up towards the top of the phone ( you dont HAVE to but i did flatten the terminals a little bit so not to bend the PCB board when you place it back in ) having the springy terminals on these earpieces placed the correct way up creates a very solid connection to the board too unlike the original earpieces which dont have any at all just flat terminals.
7. Return the PCB board back into position and reattach the 2 connectors removed in step 4.
8. Return the casing back into place and install all the screws ( dont forget the 2 SILVER screws FIRST, these hold the PCB board down to the casing and hold the connection solid to the earpiece )
9. Place SIM card and battery back in and boot up your fresh earpieced Defy
Pictures to follow soon hopefully
Cheers

There IS a tiny tiny membrane between the earpiece and the casing and does appear that it would still be waterproof but i have yet to test that and not sure if i will as it is a BIG BIG risk lol ( maybe though hmmm )
Thanks for that.
So the membrane stayed with the handset casing through the procedure?

That's interesting. Maybe the failures are caused by poor connections in the first place. Perhaps a pre-emptive strike with some electrically conductive paint would save the day. It's claimed to function as an adhesive.

Yes only the earpiece came away from the casing using the method i applied but again i can't swear by the membrane as it could possibly be different with other variants of the phone ( although i doubt it ).
And plus for me atleast, i'd rather have a working phone than a waterproof phone ( just me though )
I am nearly certain its an actual defect with the earpieces because if you blow the earpiece with some canned air it will function for 5-10 seconds before going off again.
I do think there may be a problem with both the connections and earpieces though as the way the oem connections are designed in the Defy for the earpiece contacts are piss poor, excuse my french lol.
Well, I'm sending my Defy in for repair today, after my earpiece started playing-up intermittently over the weekend. I tried to insist on a replacement but Motorola's support team were adamant that a repair is my only option under the terms of my warranty. Ah, well. I've got a spare phone.
That said, I will likely "paint" the earpiece connections upon its return and it's good to know that the K850i part works. I may buy a couple as a precaution.

That sucks man sorry to hear that, it seems to be not if it will happen but when it will happen with these earpieces, yep motorola sucks for customer support to be fair. I hope your phone comes back ok though, alot of people have had it repair only for it to fail again a few weeks later.
Can I just double check which seller you got yours from as I've had a look on ebay & the three that are for sale look different styles - unless the pics are not of actual items?
Cheers

The actual one i used is this one :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300370841729&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
There is an actual motorola one that has the same terminals as the original but ( my opinion i would not trust another earpiece from them ) :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220640434368&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
I wouldnt worry too much if they look slightly different aslong as they are for the k850i as it will most likely be because they are from different manufacturers
Hope that helps
That's great thanks very much
Might just order one to keep as you never know when it'll stop working.
I had my earpiece replaced by the company, you should really send it to motorola and don't mess around with the device.
I had to replace the screen and digitiser on my TP2 after shutting it in the boot of a car (clever huh?). I accomplished the swap surprisingly easily after buying a pre-built screen and digitiser from Hong Kong for about £25. It even came with a spudger to help me take it apart I followed a few guides, including this iFixit one, which greatly helped.
Frustratingly though after putting it all back together and making a test call, the earpiece rattles during calls. Not a lot, but enough to make me want to fix it; applying gentle pressure to a certain top part of the bezel reduces the rattle a little bit but I've taken it apart three times and taped up various sections now to see if stops the problem. Unfortunately, no such luck.
Is the earpiece rattle something to do with inadequate insulation (or the ribbon cable running down the back of the screen)? Everything's sandwiched in pretty tight and I've reapplied electrical tape to what I think are the key areas. I've also padded the top area where the earpiece comes through the metal mesh and I've stuck the mesh down with doublesided tape so it can't move about. The problem persists though...
Everything else works fine, and the speaker also works perfectly with no vibrations or rattles (even though I also took that bit apart to inspect it) so I can't figure out why just the earpiece is rattling. Anybody taken their Touch Pro2 apart, had the same problem and solved it?
I have torn apart probably 3-4 TP2 screens and never had anything rattle. Did you lose a screw in there by chance? That is the only thing that would be small enough to rattle in there I think.
The only other thing I could thing that it might be is a bad connection to the vibrator motor. Maybe you have the little ribbon cable pinched or a bit off the socket it fits in.
Recently i received my Xperia Z1C White. After some careful checking (that happens when you are a techy) i noticed that the frame bends slightly inwards at the back side. I made a small example of what i mean on a photo. The problem is. If you can press those parts of the frame inwards, what happens with the waterproof seal between that part of the frame and the plastic bezel on top of this? Is this the case with every Xperia Z1C or is this a rare problem?
I suspect this also is the reason why you can hear a sound while pressing the screen slightly.

Same on my phone, but only the charging port side, and my phone squeaks too.
Me too - i can also press the frame inward. Oh my god, i´m a bit confused now...lets hope everything is ok and water is no problem for that...
*EDIT* But i have to say that this also is an issue to find on my Z1 !
Had a bit of convex shape on the back, barely noticeable. Hairdryer and pressing did the trick.
And no, don't be too harsh to the phone.
Glue seems to be unequally applicated.
Made in China after all.
I don't know why, but it doesn't seems any problem with my white phone.
I wonder hwo wide spread or problematic this is. On a normal phone this wouldnt be a problem at all. But on a waterproof phone every error can be a problem.
Mine seems to have the same microscopic gap on the back around the docking port.
I dunked it in a bowl of water and let it sit for 5 minutes. Took it out, dried it off - no problems.
The back of mine flexes when pressed hard in the center, but there are no gaps at the edges (even when pressed)
Is this something they'd accept a warranty replacement for? Where do you go about requesting such?

I think no warranty on this, they will probably consider it normal.
The problem with high precision designed devices like this and iphones is, that if something is a bit off you notice it easier.
I do regret it a bit that i didnt exchange it within the 7 days that it is possible to exchange a product after buying it in holland. But if it is widespread, then the case of a phone without the flexing frame/misaligned frame would be very small.
For anyone worried about the waterproof nature of their device, the only thing I can say is - test it. If the product works as intended you're golden. If not, you're covered by warranty.
I'm avid photographer and diver and with all new waterproof equipment, the first thing I do is test their waterproofing by either dunking them in the tub or the sink full of water.
You've bought a device with a capability which you should be able to trust. No need to find out 1 year later when you drop it in the toilet that your device is faulty.

Same here, only a small gap around docking port that can be ever so slightly pressed in under higher-than-normal pressure, never noticed it in every day handling.
Mine keeps pulling hairs out of my beard!

I believe there's a sensor-like surface when you open up one of the flaps (the micro-USB one I think). It's a small white square and it turns red when in contact with water.
This is how the service centres know that you are complying to proper usage. So do be careful not to get the internals wet
That would make sense

I have exchanged mine, still a little flex around the charging port but the back is definitely more flush. No small gap and less cracking noise when pressing the back as well. Very content with the built quality of this phone now.
Hello all, Yesterday the headphone jack of my Elephone P8000 stopped working. Today I repaired it and I would like to share how I performed the repair. It is really easy and everyone can do it it took me 15 minutes.
Tools needed to perform the repair:
*Philips screw driver
*Tweezers (optional)
*Hair dryer
*soldering iron.
*Solder
#Step1:
-Remove the battery cover, SIMs and SD-card
#Step2:
-Remove all screws.
#Step3.
-Heat up the finger print scanner with a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive.
#Step4:
-Gently lift up the fingerprint scanner.
#Step5:
-Remove the hidden screw under the fingerprint scanner.
#Step6:
-Remove the plastic bezel.
#Step7:
-Disconnect the fingerprint scanner and remove it.
#Step8:
-Disconnect, Battery, GSM antenna, Rear camera, Button flex cable, Screen flex, bottom board flex, Proximity flex.
#Step9:
-Remove rear camera module (heat from screen side to loosen the adhesive if necessary).
#Step10:
-Remove main board.
#Step11:
-Turn on your solder iron, and carfully resolder de headphone jack joints to the main board.
#Step12:
-Reassemble the phone, (note: The metal battery cover screw hole needs to be on top of the plastic bezel you removed at the beginning).
Good luck!
Sorry for my english, i'm italian
How to disconnect these things?
This is a fine DIY repair; job well done!
Nice pictures and well explained. Please do it some more if you have the time that is ...
Thank you for your time and effort.

have repair my headphone jack some days ago the same way. this is maybe a penny more production cost. this should not happend, but elephone fails again
This should be pinned! Thanks a ton for this great guide! Worked for me, I have audio again!
Thanks for the detailed walk through. I finally took the plunge (after a couple of months of putting it off) and fixed my headphone port.
Just to note, I didn't have to unstick the front facing camera module. I managed to remove the board by just disconnecting the connector and leaving the camera module stuck to the base.
The only part I struggled with was putting it back together . The board needs to slot under the tiny metal retaining lip just to the left of the antenna lead pin. It's mostly visible in the Step 8 photo, a bit obscured by the red outline around the antenna pin. You need to slide the board under it when you put it back together. It was sat on top of the lip the first time I tried and then the white plastic frame wouldn't sit flush.
Repair the camera lens
Would you be able to detail the steps for rear lens replacement... as i have a crack lens that need to fix....
Just to keep this thread on the Go, done mine @ the week end and no more crackling from the head phones? after soldering but something weird has happened !! no icon has appeared when plugging phones in but they are working and so is the general speaker as well as the same time cant switch one to the other so I am no better off?
Any suggestions???
Many thanks for reading
Hello,
I just did it and all went good until I powered it again on, everything works except the display and I plugged the screen cable into the mainboard. Please help!
Thank you so much for this guide!! I had the same problem, after extracting the main board I checked connection and soldering without detecting any failures but I resoldered the connector anyway and the problem has been solved. Thanks!
Is there a large risk of you leave a the ribbon connections in place, and just solder the audio jack pins very carefully?

Just did the repair, your pictures are a great help!
Somebody who has the same problem as me? After I did this repair the sound only came out of one side. I have no idea how to fix this. I checked the solder points twice so I don't think that's the problem.
Okay I did not manage to fix the headphones jack, however, the speakers and vibrations are not working now I cannot hear anything. What should I do?
edit: nevermind, fixed the speaker
Tldr at bottom
Hi, I have the note 10+ and I work a crazy job, and I'll get to the point. My charging port stopped working because of debris that found its way into the port, and every time I plug my charger in it would compact it and force it down. So I cleaned it out with a needle and got it to work perfectly again. And I figured what the hell am, I might as well clean the speaker too, because the microphones were clogged as well. So I used a small needle and started scraping the inside of the speakers, I felt a little resistance and I pushed in harder for some dumb reason, and now my speaker distorts every single sound badly. My guess is that it's blown now. And because I did it, the warranty won't cover it. And my phone Insurance is $250 to claim it.
It's so new I can't find any replacement parts online. Anyone have a cheap hookup? I don't mind waiting for it to arrive from China if need be.
Right now I have a cotton ball jammed up there to suppress the rattle.
Tldr: I poked a hole into the loud speaker and broke it, now I need a source to get cheap parts.
eBay is your best bet for parts!
