So I soft bricked my phone... wasn't thinking and nandroid back to gingerbread from calkulin's ICS, then tried flashing CWM EL26 over it. Rebooted and I can't get back to recovery or download mode.
I'll try turning it on, see the samsung boot logo for two seconds and then it'll turn right back off.
What can I do? Thanks.
Update: Got into CWM... whew
To go back to gb, you need to install gb based cwm recovery first something like Rogue el29 recovery kernel and don't wait until reboot. During the reboot, go into recovery mode and restore your nandroid.
(Before restoring nandroid backup, format all is recommended)
One more important thing is, be sure that your nandroid backup is correct (md5 checksum).

I'd be careful with the nandroid using CWM from ICS to GB, that's how I (and a few other people) hard bricked the phone with the early ICS leaks.

If you're going back to GB I'd recommend using on of sfhub's One-Click ROM's!!
Just Odin back to EL29 with a full restore from Sfhub then install cwm from the autosticky root and restore your nand there, don't even touch the cwm included with ICS builds they are they're to flash things that don't require any wipes of any kind. People have been installing GB cwm through Odin then restoring from there but that is not a good idea and if you brick then don't say I didn't warn you.

So, I tried to flash a custom rom and after that, I couldn't boot, so I did an Nandroid backup. Also, my only choice after holding power is power off, as opposed to a buncha other stuff I can't remember. Any fixes?

Sounds like you got a bad flash. Redownload the ROM file and flash it again. If that doesn't work you will have to Odin back to stock and try again.

Thanks, but shouldn't odining back and nandroid back up have the same effect? I nandroided back to stock if that wasn't clear.
Well using odin wipes everything from the phone. Doing a nand just restores everything like it was when you made the backup.

If you just restored a nand backup it does not replace the kernel. So you would still have a bad flashed kernel. Best to Odin and reflash. It will clear up your problem.
Do you BONSAI?
Ok I tried installing the new frozen rom and it wasnt booting after like 15 minutes. So I just pulled the battery and did a nandroid backup from my stock rom because I just rooted yesterday. But after the nandroid the rom just goes back into recovery every time i restart it. Even after a battery pull it does the same thing.
Please help!
when all else fails, odin back to stock.

Did you have an EXT4 nandroid backup as well?
Sponged...not bricked. You cannot restore a full RFS nandroid on an EXT4 file system. You should use Titanium to back up apps and data. You can use the nandroid to restore data only in the advanced section. You can also try restoring the nand of beforeExt4 or whatever it is called.
Maybe this could help you restore your phone back to its old glory.

What version of Clockwork is it from? Before 3.0.2.5 the kernel was not backed up so you have the corrupt kernel still after the restore. Restore your nandroid and flash another kernel before booting like Genocide and see if that helps.
What is with everyone saying there phone is bricked? A brick means no recovery and no download mode. Use odin or heimdall to flash a tar. Or try to flash something else from recovery

Hey all,
Is there anyway to get a version of cwm that can:
A) backup and restore nandroids on ics safely, ie, backup cm9, and restore a backup of fc15.
B) safely do all of this without bricking.
If not, do you guys think this ice, cwm, and bricking will ever be fixed? Thanks in advance!.
P.s., tired of having to Odin back to el29 to flash new roms from ics...........
Thanks!

I use mobile Odin for replacing stock kernels with repacks then use ROM manager to boot into cwm recovery and flash away. Never wipe data in cwm or use reset as partitions changed. Calks format all

I was wondering if anyone had tried that already. Theoretically, you could mobile Odin back to el29 one touch rooted, boot into it, mobile Odin kernel/cwm. Then either cwm a gb nandroid backup restore or cwm a rom zip.

I've done it several times without any issue. Sfhub offers instructions on how to do it in any of his one-click restores.
I know a lot of people are coming from the EVO 3D...
Anyway i have a few question becuase im reading stuff about flashing issues...
I was about to flash a ICS ROM(Paranoid or CM9) and i read that i have to be carefull beacuse if i want to go back Nandroids will not work?
Well how do i make a Nandroid that works? I read that the only way to go back is flashing Stock via Odin(Im i wrong?)
I just finish the rooting process and im ready to install ICS ROM.
In the evo way, only thing i need it to do was nandroid, wipe, install from zip, DONE.
Thanks guys!

Basically make a nandroid with GB recovery the flash ics. If you want to restore Odin GB rom then nandroid restore.
Every rom should have instructions and as long as they are followed you should be safe.
Look up sfhub (I think) and agats custom recovery threads for more info.
Happy independence day!

Nandroids are perfectly safe, the only time when they're not safe, is when you make/restore from one on ICS.
The problem with all these ICS leaks, is a bug plaguing the emmc, which I believe that some methods of using ICS recoveries makes it wipe or something. Point is, it causes a brick. Here is the method that I use when flashing ICS, which works for most ICS ROMs, as most ICS ROMs need an EL26/EL29 framework. Pretty sure Paranoidandroid recommends this method, too.
Download these drivers
Download this: OC ODIN File for EL26 and this: E4GT Root Utility
Using Titanium Backup, make a backup of all your stuff, or use your preferred back-upper, just not nandroid. I recommend buying the Pro version, because it will save you so many times, and the dev is great. It's a little expensive though for an app.
OC Odin back to EL26. The good thing about this is, the process is straight forward, and doesn't add to your flash counter, and does not yellow triangle either.
Open up e4gtauto-sfx.exe, option C, then I. This gives you CWM, And just in case, I do not recommend using other than standard CWM to flash ICS roms. but that's me.
When your phone reboots, it should have CWM, and be rooted, just load up the flashing files onto your sd card, load up CWM, do 1 system data wipe, and flash the files in the order they have to be flashed.
Also, really important, DO NOT DIRECTLY RESTORE FROM A NANDROID You will most likely cause a brick if you do.
If you want to go back to GB, you have to Odin back to GB, and THEN you can perform the Nandroid Restore.

For OC ODIN, you don't have to worry about flashing, just plug your phone into the computer once you have the program running, an the drivers, and you'll be fine.
And yeah, you can go back using ODIN.
You just shouldn't use CWM to flash an older version of something if you're on the newer version.
So if install ICS and I want to return to GB the safe thing to do is run Odin back to stock rooted then Nandroid Restore?
