I hope I am in the right place, if not please direct me to the correct thread so that I can re-post my inquiry.
I just bought this phone & from all the poking around I'm assuming that my phone is rooted.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me whats up with my phone. I just want to know what's up with it and keep it as up to date as possible.
Can ANYONE PLEASE HELP?!
I noticed my recovery software isn't Nandroid, so how do i get that on my phone or is what i have better?
Is my OS up to date?
Is my HBOOT up to date?
Is everything correct as far as Software, Radio Version, Kernal, PRL Etc.?
I want to use my sprint service, so how do i manually change the "Phones Identity" back to sprint from what it is now? (since "PRL update" & "update profile" doesn't work - I get an Error code 131 then a 1012)
Is it better to leave it the way it is or should i just RUU it and restart a root and flash from scratch?
Here is the data I have collected: (Hope it Helps)

Umm, nandroid isn't a type of recovery, it's a backup you make in the recovery. The recovery is either ClockworkMod or AmonRa. And since you didn't tell us which one it is, or what version you are on, we can't tell you if it's up to date or not. You could easily do this yourself by checking either of the recovery's sites to see what the latest version is.

If your software is up to date, then your hboot likely is too. However if it's not, you don't want to update the hboot, or you will have a hell of a time rooting it back.

Are you not on sprint now?
And if your hboot is saying you are s-on, you are not rooted.

If you looked at the info i wrote, It says s-on

ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.2, which one is better, AmonRa or ClockworkMod?

like i said before, my HBOOT version is 2.18.001. I want to downgrade it, so how do i do it?
Are you not on sprint now?
No, my EVO is not on sprint, i have another phone on sprint (Optimus S), and i want to do a complete clean & restore on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G so i can use it with my sprint service, THEN re-root it once i have it working.
And if your hboot is saying you are s-on, you are not rooted.
Not necessarily, from what i read, i can be rooted and have s-on at the same time. How can i be unlocked and not be rooted? Don't you have to root in order to unlock WITHOUT taking the device to a dealer
My question is how can i get it to s-off and downgrade the hboot, install a better if not updated recovery and install a stock sprint htc evo 4g rom so that i can do a OTA update and reroot the EVO once i get the phone working with my sprint account? i do not want to have to take the phone to a service center when i know all i have to do is add the MEID info onto MySprint account online and swap phones. I just want to make sure the software is correct and i have the capability to root once i know the phone works properly.
I tried using the "RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.24.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.05.02_NV_2.15_release_199233_signed" but it doesnt seem to work. Do i have to have S-OFF in order for it to work? I also read that the *** Unlocked *** high lighted in purple also has something to do with the HBOOT version and the its a watermark of some sort. I just want to unroot, do a OTA update, get the phone working with my account service and re-root. Any ideas? Please share with me any or all the info i may need to do so.
If you just have to downgrade your Hboot:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...-18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-)
But you're making unrooting harder than it actually is. You probably do not even need to unroot. Your phone is already up to date. You have the latest everything, but your bootloader is just unlocked. If you need to unroot the phone, all you need to do is run the latest RUU found in this PC36IMG file. It will not relock your bootloader; however, the phone is easily rerooted later with the unlocked bootloader.
http://goo.im/stock/supersonic/ruu/...15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed.zip
The instructions from the first link will also unroot your phone as well as relock your bootloader, but then you will have to re-update the phone, which is currently up to date, re-unlock the bootloader, and then reroot it; if that is what you want to do.

Here's my question. My friend's brother attempted to root his stock Evo using simpleroot instructions I sent my friend 4-5 months ago (pre-2.2) without knowing that simpleroot isn't supported. His phone is now borked. When he tries to load into bootloader, he gets an error (not sure which one), but his phone will boot into android.
What I'm wondering is this: As of yesterday, his phone was updated and current as per sprint and the update commands in the system menus... Can he flash back to an older stock rom via RUU (such as this one) without causing other problems? If my understanding is correct, the latest sprint updates aren't yet rootable, right?
Any help on this issue?
Thanks

No, you can not run an older ruu. If he updated to today or yesterdays update hes stuck. If he is on HBOOT 2.02 he can flash the 3.30.651.3 ruu or ths 3.70.651.1 but you can not ruu further back.

Yes, they're both rootable.
S-ON vs S-OFF; is just basically a security parameter that's being locked/unlocked. This allows for PC36IMG's files to be flashed via the bootloader without having to use or have authenticated signature keys from Google.
Basically, if you ever accept an OTA and it flashes and removes your recovery (CWM or Amon_RA); then you have no way of flashing custom roms/mods, etc... however with S-OFF, you have the ability to get your recovery back and set yourself back to root if need be.
Essentially, S-OFF allows for another method of flashing stuff to the phone besides just using the CWM or Amon_RA recoveries.
Hboot versions however can affect S-OFF; so it's important that if there is a new OTA that you always hold off, until a developer can validate that the hboot can be exploited and that the OTA can be rooted.

1. 2.02 is rootable 2.10 is not and is the newest one.
2.0 S-ON means you can not flash roms s-off means you can. It is the security of the phone kind of.
If you can not get into bootloader then you can try running the oldest ruu and then the next. It wont hurt the phone at all (I just did it today) it will just give you an error and reboot the phone.

To see if you're S-OFF or S-ON; you can boot your phone into bootloader mode.
To do this:
1. Power down the phone
2. Hold the Volume Down + Power button
3. You'll see a white screen with three little Androids
4. Read the very top of the screen; should tell you if you are S-ON or S-OFF.
You can reboot afterwards.
And yes, you can switch from the S-ON to S-OFF and vise versa, though I don't see why you would want to do the latter.

There actually is a way to downgrade without rooting, all you need to do is flash the mtd-eng.img file to your misc partition as explained in toast's rooting part 2 thread. After you do that it will let you flash any ruu that is compatible with your phone

After having looked at the EVO threads for the last 3 days, I cannot figure out how to root my friends Evo. I have an Epic 4G and have previously worked upon the Incredible and HTC Hero. I have never had any issues rooting and or installing CWM or custom ROMs. I am beginning to think the Evo is a POS but I know that not to be true. Maybe I am just becoming frustrated with trying numerous methods including xHausx’s auto root method and having nothing work. Currently SetCPU is working with root rights but no other application that needs root rights including ROM manager will work. I can’t even install Clockwork Mod let alone find the correct thread so that I can install it. Next, there are no backups for this phone and my friend never backed up his RSA or Wimax keys. It is more involved than any of the 'auto' methods, but you also learn a great deal along the way.
What have you tried and what issues have you run into?
At this point, it may be a good idea to run RUU to bring it back to 100% stock before trying the method above.
what happened when you tried unrevoked or did you try that method?
From my understanding CWM sucks (sorry koush). Get Amon-Ra for recovery.
Can't think of a witty tag line. . . Swyped from my Warm Evo.
It's not that hard if you know what you're doing. The fact that it still has S-On means it's not rooted.
Before you root this phone update all the radios first. Go to Menu > Settings > System Updates and update the Profile, PRL, and HTC Software. From there read the following articles before you attempt to root again and possibly brick your friend's phone.

Can anyone else confirm that this should be done before restoring back to the RUU?

I am new to root, but I have to say, the process of rooting the Evo isn't hard.
What's hard is finding the RIGHT method to root it.
I searched high and low and found a multitude of rooting options and that's what made it confusing. Once I decided on a method (unrEVOked), it was painless and took less than

So why is it so hard to find the right method? The Epic4G has just one to choose from for example. Is there a guide that tells one which one to choose? It should not be this difficult but it is.
Thanks for your reply and assistance.

Thanks NewZJ! I have no idea what he did to it before I started working on it but it was not in good shape that is for sure. After using this method, which root method should I use?

Because HTC makes it difficult. We still have 1 click easy root. Get your facts straight.

I am trying to get my facts straight but I can tell you 1 click easy root on Evo did not work on my friends Evo and so the name is somewhat misleading. On the Epic4G, 1 click root works on every Epic. That is the big difference but I thank you for your reply.
I've seen good results from the xhausx methods, he provides support with issues during the rooting process and that impressed me
he walked another person that was having issues rooting the other day, was very knowledgeable

So do I need to have Amon RA or CWM installed to use this RUU? After searching this forum I cant find any instructions on how to install an RUU.
it's an .exe so plug the phone into a windows pc then run the program
Hi guys just tried to install the 2.3 OTA update that came through today.
Problem is as soon as I try it reboots to the exclamation mark and android symbol.
I am ENG S-OFF Radio S-OFF Sim Unlocked and Perm Rooted.
I did however change my CID to the standard HTC 001.
What could be the issue? I'm not getting any error notifactions or if I am I don't know where to find them?
Any advice?
Have you removed any system apps? Or any of the bloatware they pack in stock builds?
No the only thing I have done is to permroot with Visionary and add radio s-off and supercid now I changed the cid back to stock in prep for the update coming. The ROM is completely standard and stock.
My current version and build info is as follows:
Android Version
2.2
Baseband Version
12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
Kernel Version
2.6.32.21-gf3f553d
[email protected] #1

Build Number
1.32.405.6 CL278359 release-keys
Software Number
1.32.405.6
Browser Version
WebKit 3.1
Oh and when trying to use this tool after the failed OTA update attempt to change radio s-off back to on to see if that worked the program no longer seems to work returning failed probably connection errors: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
Thanks for the quick reply.
Same problem as I have in my thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081923&page=2
I think its becuase we have S-OFF that we cant get the update. I'd like to know how to get S-OFF back on
If you're both rooted, etc... Why don't you try Seraphics rooted GB ROM?
You can flash it via recovery and is completely stock, other than having root access.
You can find the thread HERE and the ROM HERE
I wouldn't mind knowing how to get S-OFF back on. Starting to wish I didn't root as I cant even get an OTA.
Same problem
I had the same problem ealier today. Yellow ! when the update shuts down the phone, but take out the battery and it loads back 2.2 up..
Tried undoing changes I could remember making- the radio s-off, rooting and the CID. Only other thing I could think of was trying to take clockworkmod recovery off the phone.
I decided just to flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059563
...If you can flash roms, this is probably gonna be much the same as the update.
In the end I was actually pretty disappointed with it. I've tried RCMIX kingdom ROM which has elements of sense3 in it. I hadn't done my research and expected sense 3 with this update.
Thanks for the suggestions guys but I'll be frank and say custom roms aren't interesting me. I use Launcher Pro and make my own lockscreens for all my visual customisations and haven't seen any ROM that does anything out the ordinary other than tweaks.
Its knocked my confidence in using anything off here especially when the tool to s-off supercid and simunlock says its simple enough to go back where in reality after attempting OTA something in the settings somewhere has changed and screwed it up.
The ROM I linked to isn't a custom ROM. Its stock HTC gingerbread with root.

Thanks had a looked more in detail at the rom you linked to and have to say I'm convinced and can't be bothered with OTA anymore lol Decided to stop sitting on the fence and throw myself at the dev communities mercy lol Those using the Easy Radio tool won't be able to go back to s-on unless rooted and to do so ensure that you haven't denied access to an unamed process called "Unknown" in your superuser app as this refers to the radio tools access.

solution of ur problem is to turn ur radio s-on simple.. mine works perfectly fine just installation error occurs which was solved ater factory reset and install OTA update.
Here's what hboot looks like:
-----------
INCREDIBLEC XD SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.92.0000
MICROP-0417
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC83_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.07.28
July 23, 2010, 18:06:51
It has ClockworkMod Recovery running and I was able to take a Nandoid backup, but it's at 2 something, not 5. something like i've seen many people's at.
-----
And here's what internal phone info says on the version currently running:
Android version 2.2
Basebad version same a radio
Kernel: 2.6.32.17
Build Number: 3.26.605.1
------
My understanding is that the first thing I need to do is to unlock the phone by upgrading hboot first. ADB does not generate an unock code at this version I do not think of hboot. However, I've copied the zip file for the newer version of hboot to what I think is the root of my SD card, and I'm still getting no luck, it won't recognize it or flash it.
I see people refer to an RUU, and I'm a complete dummy. Is there another way to upgrade hboot besides the zip file on the root of the SD card? If so, can someone point me to a walk-through that tells me what software to download and exactly what to do? I am sorry to be silly, but I am rather new at this and don't want to break the phone. It's just at an ancient build, and I'd like to upgrade it to the Touch of Blue custom ROM, or to the newest Stock rom.
---------
Edit to add: Found the executable RUU, finally, for 1.2, and got it unlocked. Woot!
Still getting eerrors attempting to install Touch of Blue (set_paras, some things cannot be changed, error 7 or something like that). I at least want to get it updated to the newest stock ROM, so I think I can manage that, and if I can't, I'll re-edit.
I promise I worked on this all night last night before posting a question... hehehehe. I also updated Clockwork Recovery to 5.0.2.0.
I've been trying to unroot my phone today. It's time to take it in for an upgrade, and so I need to unroot and get it back to stock. I've been having a problem however when it comes to the PC36IMG.zip. I keep getting the error saying "Main version is older, update fail" and don't know what to do. I've tried several versions of the PC36IMG.zip much to no avail. If anyone could just spare a moment to help me out I'd be quite grateful. Here are the stats of my phone:
EVO 4G -
Supersonic EVT3 Ship S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0001
Microp-041f
Touch Panel-Atmel224_16ab
Radio-2.15.00.11.19

I rooted many moons ago using Unrevoked Forever, and hence ran the Unrevoked Forever Son zip to get S-ON instead of S-OFF. So the next step is just the PC36IMG. If any other information is needed, let me know. Thank you in advance, and I apologize if this is a noob question.
That information already looks stock. What is your software version? What file are you trying to flash? Any Gingerbread PC36IMG should work.

Software version is Android version correct? If so it is 4.1.1
The file I am trying to flash is the PC36IMG from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
But like I said, I keep getting that error. My phone currently has CM10 if that is at all relevant to anything. I just want it back stock, like it came shipped, so I don't have any hassles from Sprint people.

That's a really old one. You need a Gingerbread one. The latest one is for 4.67.651.3, I believe.
EDIT: The RUU would work too, but it'll require a Windows PC to run.

Yes it should.
That did the trick. Thank you for your help! Any suggestions on a new phone? I'm almost tempted to keep the EVO

I have the M8, which is easily the best device I've ever owned. But if the EVO will hold you over, I'd wait for the next big device. The Snapdragon 805 is a beast.
Need Help to Unroot
So I rooted my Evo years ago using Unrevoked. I was wondering if there was a RUU download that could just completely reformat and unroot my phone for me?
Specs:
*** Unlocked ***
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.18.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab

Do I need a memory card installed to do anything? I can get to recovery without one in, would like to go back to factory and unroot. Thanks.
There is no RUU for you to run, particularly since you're S-on. There is a newer software update than what you have installed, but you'd need to reinstall the stock Android recovery and make sure you're using a fairly stock ROM. You can then take the update.
