I've been trying to unroot my phone today. It's time to take it in for an upgrade, and so I need to unroot and get it back to stock. I've been having a problem however when it comes to the PC36IMG.zip. I keep getting the error saying "Main version is older, update fail" and don't know what to do. I've tried several versions of the PC36IMG.zip much to no avail. If anyone could just spare a moment to help me out I'd be quite grateful. Here are the stats of my phone:
EVO 4G -
Supersonic EVT3 Ship S-ON

I rooted many moons ago using Unrevoked Forever, and hence ran the Unrevoked Forever Son zip to get S-ON instead of S-OFF. So the next step is just the PC36IMG. If any other information is needed, let me know. Thank you in advance, and I apologize if this is a noob question.
That information already looks stock. What is your software version? What file are you trying to flash? Any Gingerbread PC36IMG should work.

Software version is Android version correct? If so it is 4.1.1
The file I am trying to flash is the PC36IMG from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
But like I said, I keep getting that error. My phone currently has CM10 if that is at all relevant to anything. I just want it back stock, like it came shipped, so I don't have any hassles from Sprint people.

That's a really old one. You need a Gingerbread one. The latest one is for 4.67.651.3, I believe.
EDIT: The RUU would work too, but it'll require a Windows PC to run.

That did the trick. Thank you for your help! Any suggestions on a new phone? I'm almost tempted to keep the EVO

I have the M8, which is easily the best device I've ever owned. But if the EVO will hold you over, I'd wait for the next big device. The Snapdragon 805 is a beast.
Need Help to Unroot
So I rooted my Evo years ago using Unrevoked. I was wondering if there was a RUU download that could just completely reformat and unroot my phone for me?

Do I need a memory card installed to do anything? I can get to recovery without one in, would like to go back to factory and unroot. Thanks.
There is no RUU for you to run, particularly since you're S-on. There is a newer software update than what you have installed, but you'd need to reinstall the stock Android recovery and make sure you're using a fairly stock ROM. You can then take the update.

Hello,
I am extremely new to this process and recently just rooted my EVO and would like to know the proper procedures to return my phone to stock if there is an issue eventually with my phone. I rooted using UnrEVOked3 and have the custom recovery installed when it was rooted. I did run a back up recovery right after I rooted.
I tried to figure it out on my own by flashing the RUU that was on theunlockr's site and it worked but was hesitant to run the OTA software update with "S-OFF" still activated. So I rerooted my phone and tried their "S-ON utility but now can’t run the RUU due to a bootloader error. I tried searching but there is so many threads about it that it gets confusing so I figured I would ask directly what my steps should be.
A couple questions:
Should my next step be rerooting the phone and then running the RUU?
Will running a RUU and then running an OTA update be ok if “S-OFF” is still activated?
Will running an OTA update turn “S-OFF” back to “S-ON”?
After I return complete stock can I reroot in the future if I want?
My Bootloader at this time looks like this:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-04if

Thanks, if I run into any issues when I run the PC36IMG I'll be back
I went to the development section and looked at the guide for how to unroot the evo, and I downloaded the S-ON tool and went to download the pc36img and the file isnt there anymore.
I am scared to do anything in the fear of bricking this phone. I am not even sure on how to unroot it all and stuff.
I am not trolling, and I have actually looked. I am sorry I am just new to the root world.. I have to repair my phone tomorrow and I have to unroot it...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok a lil more information is needed. Also why are you unrooting....
If you are returning your phone just take an OTA update and it will unroot for you, Other methods and links when you post some info on bootloader and previous root method used.. FYI - there are threads in development for both unrooting methods
Edit: Here you go my friend all I put in was unroot htc evo in google and dont be scared its not difficult at all

Alright, flash the s-on.zip via your custom recovery. [ra or clockwork]
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
Download this file and rename it PC36IMG [keep it a zip file].
PC36IMG.zip [not PC36IMG.zip.zip]
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MUSAURP7
Put in on the root of your SDCARD.
Load into your bootloader and accept the update.
Done.

you can also find an RUU and it will do the same thing but go to the unrevoked site and they have info on how to unroot

Try this link http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever

did you check to see if an OTA is available for you. Could save you some time and worries. Also I do not believe you have to worry about your radio although I have seen some people have an issue. I would give it a try first...

I believe you mean 04.08 and that radio should be fine.
Try doing an OTA like playya has said if you don't feel comfortable with our methods.
it says there is no update for my phone under HTC updates...
so do you think its okay to go ahead and try the unrooting process and flash the PC36IMG.zip through hboot after running unrevoked tool and flashing that through recovery EVEN WITH my RADIO-2.15.00.0808?
no matty i just booted into hboot to check again and its 2.15.00.0808

Arent there two spots to check for updates on your phone...One says software update the other HTC, forgive I have not run stock since Sept of last year
I first rooted my phone using revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip file to get the s-off and then flashing SuperUser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip. This worked just fine. I've been ok with the stock rom so I haven't changed it. I wanted the new update when it came out and some threads said I needed to UNroot in order to update. Therefore I ran PC36IMGson.zip which hasn't help me either, but now my phone is back to s-on but seems to still be rooted (since Titanium Backup, Rom Manager, and SuperUser are still working fine).
Now, I'm done with it all and would like to flash some other rom But I can't get back to s-off! revolutionary thinks it's still set to s-off each time I run it, but the bootloader screen still says s-on. Unrevoked doesn't work either since my device is unsupported.
Any ideas???
I'm pretty new to all of this and have been trying to figure this on my own with XDA and youtube videos. So clear, step-by-step instructions is best, THANKS!!

You dont need to unroot and grab the OTA update. Just flash the lastest stock rooted ROM. It comes packaged with the latest updates pushed by Sprint.
Edit: This thread is exactly the reason why mods have created stickies. Try putting forth some effort in looking for an answer yourself before creating a thread. You can do this by using the search feature or checking the thread that was an inch below the button you pushed to create this one.

Thank you Concordium, Please use the stickies to learn more about xda before you start asking questions. Also the search feature works wonders, much faster than trying to look through all 5,000+ pages in our dev section alone. Please please please use the tools already given to you.

Hello XDA members!
This is officially my first thread and folks I am in need of some help! Let me start off by letting everyone know, I have honestly done my best with searching for an answer on the forum and Google. Another thing is, I truly apologize for any inconvenience, if I make this thread in the wrong section of the forum or if this has been asked and solved already.
My whole goal is to take back my EVO 4G to my local Sprint store to either fix my 4G Antenna or get a refurbished Evo. If I luck up, I might get a substitution with a Evo 3D. That it is if there out of stock. I do have Asurion insurance and it has not exceeded the 90 day warranty the Evo 4G comes with from HTC.
Now on to the problem with the Evo 4G. I'm struggling to UNROOT and S-ON my Evo 4G from Revolutionary root. In my case, I'm no expert around this whole ordeal. I'm very familiar with rooting and friendly with guides. I've followed every guide that I came across, but still cannot S-ON my Evo 4G!
For those that would like to know when I boot into HBOOT I get the following:
SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.16.0001
MICROP=041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.0808
MAR 8 2011, 17:02:15
*NOTE THAT "REVOLUTIONARY" NO LONGER SHOWS ON MY HBOOT SCREEN, ONCE I FLASHED AN S-ON IMAGE.
*NOTE THE DATE AND TIME ON MY HBOOT IS CLEARLY OUT OF DATE. IT SEEMS TO BE STUCK ON THAT TIME. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY, NOR DO I KNOW IF THIS COULD BE A FACTOR.
Folks I have tried just about everything that I can think of. I've downgraded my radio to see if it changed anything. (Nothing). I tried flashing different stock images to see if it changed anything. (Nothing). I tried running RUU's to see if that changed anything. (Nothing). I really don't know what's left for this bad boy. Is there any different way of changing the security flag on? adb, fastboot, terminal?
Any answers and help is greatly appreciated! Thanks and hope to get some feedback soon!
-Bruce

You need to downgrade your radio again to the 2.15.00.11.19 or earlier radio then flash the unrevoked forever s-on tool to get S-on.

The unrEVOked S-ON zip will only work on the unsigned 6.17 HBOOT, however. So, the steps you'll need to take are:
1) Flash custom recovery via PC36IMG (Amon_Ra v2.3 recommended)
2) Downgrade radio to 2.15.00.11.19 or older
3) Flash modded 6.17 HBOOT
4) Flash unrEVOked S-ON zip through recovery.
You should be S-ON at that point, and then finally you flash a stock ROM (4.54 recommended) to restore your device completely to stock.
Hey folks!
I apologize for the long reply back guys. I'm currently away on vacation and haven't had time to check out the forum.
I will definitely try all of the advice posted! Once again, thank you very much! I really do appreciate it. I will get back to the thread and let you know how everything goes as soon as I can! I'm sorry for any inconvience.

I was rooted with unrevoked after reverting back from the newest OTA using a guide from the XDA forums. everything was working wonderfully but my dumbass had to try and downgrade to an ancient ENG Hboot. using thefredelement's guide to get back to ENG .76. NOT NOTICING i shouldn't try it with HW version 003/004. unfortunately my phone is HW 003. idk what i need to do to get this fixed or if i bricked my phone. I've got a warranty still so i can always just report it lost pay the 50 and restore from my backup sd card.
anyways, my computer is able to see my phone with fastboot but not adb. i get errors when trying to flash new recoveries or anything but radios (such as fail PU, image update error, data length too large, etc) Trying to do anything with adb shell just says "device not found" (yes, i have the correct drivers installed) I CANNOT get into recovery (i had CWM 5.0.2.2) it just reboots back to hboot or the screen with the three droids skateboarding when i try. sorry ahead of time if this is posted in the wrong section/i just killed some brain cells with my stupidity and lack of experience. thanks in advance for any help and advice i can get! Remain calm. Let's see if we can get you fully functional.
First, let's upgrade that HBOOT. That by itself might fix you up, if it'll flash through the bootloader. Try the PC36IMG.zip attached to this post. It's for HBOOT 2.15.
If it flashes successfully, it should reboot the bootloader for you. If it doesn't, choose the fastboot option that does, and when it comes back up, try getting into recovery. If you can get into recovery, the next thing you should do is retire CWM and flash RA-supersonic.
thx capt. I actually just filed a clain through asurion, and for my $100 deductible i've getting a brand new evo3d xD so jumping the gun for the replacement actually worked out for me this time!

A shame to send back a perfectly fine OG . But I'm glad it worked out for you. Personally I like the challenge of trying to rescue a soft-bricked device. But I guess we'll never know if it was possible, now . . .
i would have loved to have found out myself. but being on probation and in the process of finding a job I just didnt have the time to mess with it i've still got it so once i get some time i'm going to attempt to unbrick it still. although its useless now that it's been deactivated lol
