Buying a Tmobile Galaxy S2 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys ill be coming to the Galaxy S2 device from the lacking mytouch 4g slide im buying one for 300 usd with a seidio case and clip is that a good deal and what are some of you guys dislikes and likes about this phone am i getting a good deal?

Yeah if its in good condition then 300-350 is normal for a used one. The case is a bonus.
I would check the screen and make sure it is not terrible....some are worse than others. Some have vertical lines and blobs. A google search will reveal a lot of information on the subject.

you'll want to check if it's Korea manufactured. Those seem to be of lesser quality than the China ones.
I'm just sayin!

how do i know where it was made is it behind the battery cover?

Hit the thank you button. The phone has no notification led which is annoying to me. Also we dont have any 100% working AOSP build which sucks. However, it is a great phone. As far as roms go... I personally think that Darkside's Digital Warfare is the best and everything works. Otherwise you can just run a debloated stock.

Is this phone worth comming from a Mytouch 4g slide? for 300 or should i just wait. Do all the galaxy s2 phones have the same development and progress compaired to sprints and att? or is this one behind

phone is definitly worth it and right now anything that M & S is putting out is outstanding you have a few choices as far as roms he has Paradox 2 which is seriously stunning and then you have Tuesday Blue Ray right now which is the fastest and best looking rom ive ever seen go ahead and get the phone you will not be disapointed

I'm confused 1st you say there is no 100% working AOSP build, then you state that Darkside's Digital Warfare rom is the best and everything works. I don't know what the difference is between a Android Open Source Project build and a Read only Memory when used in this context?
Can you please explain it to me?
I won't modify my phone unless I can have full functionality.

AOSP refers to ROMs that are 100% stock with absolutely zero touchwiz. These are roms released straight from Google to the nexus phones, cyanogenmod, and miui. While we have booting versions of all 3, the only one that is kind of close to working is CM7 thanks to Eugene. We have an AOSP ics ROM from raver that definitely has potential but isn't there yet. Miui is the least developed of the 3.
If you're okay with touchwiz (you pretty much have to be at this stage in development), almost all the roms are completely functional but I personally like digital warfare the best for stability and battery life.

The phone is definitely worth switching to. I've been having lots of fun with mine.

So according to jahrule none of these stock roms work 100%, that is what confused me. You would think that OEMs would not put out betas for the consumer to fiddle around with and complain about. I only want as stated previously 100% working roms. What does not work with the digital warfare rom?

That is incorrect. Basically every gingerbread ROM has absolutely zero issues. Three only exception I would say is beastmod which I think has a few bugs. There are zero issues with digital warfare.

Are you illiterate? AOSP does not mean stock. The stock roms for any galaxy phone have touchwiz. AOSP is just android. No bloat, no touchwiz, just android. Al of the touchwiz roms function 100%, except beastmod as stated before. The 3 AOSP roms are not functioning at 100%. CM7 is the closest AOSP rom to fully functional.

What's the big hype?

I hope I don't offend anyone and I'm not trying to start any war between AOKP and CM9 but I just wanted to know what's the big hype about CM9? I see some features in AOKP that I haven't seen in CM9. Just seems like everyone is going crazy over CM and I've flashed their rom before and enjoyed their hard work and I am thankful of every team out there that makes Roms. Don't want to seem like that bad guy.
A lot of people have been running CM for a long time (like since CM5 launched). Its that quintessential custom ROM that lots of people have an attachment to I think.

Gotcha, thats understandable. I just expected them to blow other roms out the water but AOKP has been extremely stable and full of customization.
From my expierence on the boards (going back to when the HTC EVO was the biggest baddest on the block) CM is a nameplate that carrys a long history of being a very lightweight Rom . It has always had a good sized list of developers on its team through during its time . Its also known as one of the roms that usually has multipul devices under its sleeves . Not to go overboard but finding better fitting descriptions . They are more or less legend when it comes to roms . There has always been a CM(x) out there . Im sure there will always been a CM(x) for future devices as well . I think basically the convience is as people switch devices as time goes on there is always a constant these people can look to and that is CM . Atleast thats my take on it

You also have to understand that cyanogenmod just released their first nightly for the Galaxy Nexus, while AOKP has been out for some time (though I don't know exactly how long since I'm fairly new to the galaxy nexus myself). CM also has supported tons of devices (over 60 if wikipedia is right ).
Stability, lightweight, and an approach that borders straight professionalism. That's why I like CM and have always had it on mine--and my friends'--phones.
Some roms are really, really fun and have a variety of positives (and negatives). Other roms choose to improve upon the basic Android OS and offer the user that functions simply but contains a host of neat features. CM is the latter in my book.
CM9 currently lacks some settings other roms have. That said CM9 will add them and much more, work on a plethora of devices and remain working with updates long after many of these other Roms are long dead.
CM9 may lack some features compared to other roms but no roms lack in features borrowed from CM9.
Talk to me when AOKP supports 50+ devices....

I think with ICS everything changed and cyan got set back significantly due to drastic OS changes. So yes aokp is far ahead right now.

I'm not sure if this saying still works, but "quoted for truth."
A rom without ANY CM influence/features is a rarity, and dare I say it pretty impossible to find.
CM9 may lack features, but so far it's the most stable "nightly" I've come across.

It's actually slowly going in that direction with the multiple device support of AOKP expanding to many devices including the T-Mobile Vibrant (recently!)

Some? A lot of MIUI is based off of CM source.
CM9 has been slower out of the gates because of reasons already mentioned; namely a huge stable of devices to support, the build bot was borked for quite a while as well. Settings will come in time, again # of devices. They also lay the ground work for many other ROMs, not to say that there aren't people doing a lot of coding of their own.
For many devices they're the only AOSP like ROM available. It's stable and quick, but if you absolutely need a lot of the custom settings right now, then you'll have to look elsewhere for the moment.
cm rom are good and much much more stable, from my own experience.

Vinilla ICS

Im just curious if we will ever get a rom that is based on vanilla ICS and not CM9 or MIUI? I know that We wont ever get an official update, but ive seen a bunch of different handsets that dont have official roms with a working ICS vanilla rom in progress or already working.
Why? Cm9 is better optimized and has fixes

Higher powers forbid you to ever say anything remotely negative about CM. But I'll second that. "CleanICS" would be sweet.
CM6 I wouldn't touch because the bug list was huge. Sure, you can have CM, but your phone wont properly work.
I tried CM7 and found it about as comfortable for a daily runner as wearing a burlap undershirt.
CM9 is still just an Alpha, so even though folks are raving about it there's still little chance it's any better than the above. All that customization, I don't give a rip. I'd rather have my phone working, normally.

I am a fan of as many options and ROMS for our phones as we can have. I guess my point is you can make CM9 as watered down as you want. CM9 is as close to an ICS release as we will ever see on the Epic, seeing as there will never be a "stock" version. I guess its just user preference and I am a fan of all ROMS really. But it sounds like all you need, is to pick the ROM you want to run and apply an ICS theme.

Yeah i was talking to a sprint rep a few weeks ago and i was talking to him about ICS and hey basically said " Yeah!, i was talking to samsung and they straight up told me we wouldn't be able to ICS on the phone because the TW UI requires a lot and all the software they bloat it on" But you'd think even if they did update it and stripped TW simple and clean but yet stylish and removed excess bloatware and a few mods it could happen. That it still would make people buy newer products but also have more support for them because their throwing newer support for old tech.
I guess i just dont see why devs would go through the trouble of making an aosp ics build for us when we already have cm9 which is based on it, just with some enhancements. Aosp would not somehow run better or be a better option for a daily driver.. its just a step backward from cm in terms of options and customizability.

Coming to ICS Rom first time which is best?

Ok i have not put anything new on my phone in a month.I have cauks older Rom.I have not even updated it.
I was reading the development section and i am lost in reading. So going to 1 for the first time and not having tons of issues that i get stuck with which Rom seems to be doing the best in the ICS rom section?
I understand ill get different views from people who love 1 person but i really just want to best Rom going on right now.
thanks.

I like Calks (2) Roms...Either One and and right now Im runnin Mijjah 74's Goodness at the Moment...Ive run all three... All three Roms work exceptionally Well..
probably Calkulin but...
i agree about the three of those being good bets. i've heard and read the most positive things about Calukin's stuff. It's not uncommon for other ROMs to be based on his work.
That being said, I'm also on Mijjah's Blend ICS (the Goodness). The earlier versions had a few more hiccups (mainly GPS). I'm on ver 2.5.1 and have not ran into any issues yet. GPS, check. Notification sounds, check. Notification LED indicator... oh, OK. 1 minor issue so far.
The test builds of CM9 is working pretty well, battery life is kinda bad though and for some reason it doesn't play audio through my car dock.
Sigh, back to Gingerbread I go...
Depends on your personal preference... If you wish to remain on Touchwiz, try one of the above suggestions.
For AOSP, there's CM9, AOKP, and Codename. All are smooth and filled with customizable options.
Personally, I'm in love with Codename(over General atm)

These ICS roms have tons of bugs. Nothing really major aside from complete incompatibility with my bt car kit.
But still, they are far from being a daily driver.
If I had to choose, I'd probably pick aospmod rom.

I've been running Codename for a week, and haven't experienced a single serious bug. It's almost as solid for me as the GB Touchwiz roms were.
OP, it really depends on what you want. If you want Touchwiz, then I'd definitely go with one of Calk's roms. If you want AOSP, then I'd recommend Codename, followed by CM9, then AOKP.

I don't know of any rom on any phone that works 100%. Even official Samsung releases don't work 100%.
I keep running back to gingerbread. I kept telling myself that I will try ics when its an official release. I get the itch to flash something and always go back to what works. I was running for a day, a rom from someone, but had to Odin back to EL29 because there was something I wanted to do but couldn't because of a snafu. I personally prefer stability over the newest bells and whistles.

Same here. I keep telling myself it would be the same, buggy enough not to be useful as a daily driver, but the flashaholic in me takes over.
So, hours are usually wasted.
Yeah i think ill just update cauks non ics rom for a bit yet and let the bugs play out.
I've been running Agat63's tFCXX series (currently on tFC18 0.1.1) since FC06; they're as smooth as ICS roms get, IMHO. A nice light "frosting" of the AOSP ICS look (courtesy of tiffany84), choice between stock and rogue-repacked (w/ CWM recovery) kernels, otherwise generally fairly close to the "stock" leaks except where Agat can convince himself he's not adding bugs/instability beyond what is naturally going to be in a leaked pre-release with build.prop tweaks, bloatware trimming, and such. Plus he's incredibly responsive to his users' requests and very open to providing them options.
FC06/FC07 was _just_ good enough to be a DD for me (but _barely_). FC15 and now FC18 have been nearly flawless in my experience. Of course, YMMV but I find _very_ little to complain about. Just my experience - the one thing I've learned from reading a LOT in ICS related threads is that everybody's phone behaves a little bit differently, everyone uses their phone a little bit differently, and everyone wants something a little bit different -- my recommendation would be to nandroid and start testing the roms ppl mention in this thread until you find one that works well for you (or decide ICS isn't done enough for you yet and you want to stay on GB a little bit longer).

My recommendation would be to wait until an official ICS release.
There's really not that much new ICS has to offer over GB. Not for this phone anyway.

For tw roms, yes ics is very similar to gb. But there's a world of difference between gb aosp and ics aosp. Like cm7 << cm9. Agreed that there's still bugs to be worked out for any ics roms, but some really good work has been done by our devs without having e4gt ics source released.
OP, if you do try ics roms right now, its a really good idea to be very cautious using any ics recovery. There is a real risk with bricking your phone, especially with aosp roms.

Completely depends on the person TBH. I am currently running ICS Telus Darkside ROM as my daily driver and it's a fantastic ROM, no issues that I can complain about.
AOKP is also an amazing ROM. It's vanilla android so you don't get any bloat that you would typically get from the carrier. You also don't get manufacturer specific apps like Samsung Kies and Social Hub. What you do get is a very lean, very fast ROM with oodles and oodles of customizations.
Doesn't hurt to try and see what you like best. Just remember to make a nandroid. Peace and happy flashing.

Neither. If you want a stable Android ROM MOD go CM. There are really only two legitimate "developers" of ROM mods out there. The Cyanogenmod team and MIUI. I haven't seen a legitimate MIUI port for this device (other than a massaged ATT device trainwreck) yet but CM9 is stable and typical of CM, which is polished and refined. Not just a bunch of script kiddie edits. My opinion and you will get contrary opinions which is fine. Mine is based off 4 years of android device use and just as long modified ROM adoption. Will the others work on occasion? Yes, just not consistently and without a lot of actul improvements. Rather usually clumsy attempts as improvements that are just as likely to turn your phone in to a mess. Of the 5 android phones I've had this one has been no different with the MODs out there for me. My 2 cents.

In a way he's right. Aokp has issues for me as far as how out chooses to mount the Sd cards,.but so does cm9. Dark side would be the best of not for the app hang issue that remains present. The ics megamix rom has given me the best performance thus far as stability is concerned.

Wow, what an insult to the AOKP guys. To be honest both AOKP and cm9 had some of the same issues recently. So for you to talk down AOKP because that is how you come off, is putting down cm9 as well. Be careful as these teams put in a lot of free hardworking time for us.
To answer the op question.. I like both but I like AOKP better. They fixed the audio problem that drove us crazy thanks to some great team work from another group. Only issue I have ran into with whitehawkx recent build is panoramic is having audio issues. Other than that this is an amazing well put together very customizable rom. The lockscreen is pretty awesome as well. Here are a few pics.

That is a load of garbage. However, CM is another option worth considering.

I say use both, I came from darkside to AOKP, but I still have darkside v7 as my nandroid back up just in case, give aokp a test run like I am right now and see where it takes you, no opinion is better than hands on experience.
Thanks all, just flashed ds so ill run it for at least a day then nandriod it and give aokp a whirl. Tbh i CAME from juggs and not a diff version of ds so i may like aokp better. Anyone got theme links for aokp?
Darkside evolution is what I'm using. Not getting any app hangs

Since aokp is based off of cm9 they are a lot alike but aokp has more customizable features to it. There are bugs in both cm9 and aokp but it's to be expected with nightlies until it hits the stable. I have tried DS and prefer to stick with aokp. IMO

your 2c Don't mean a damn thing...
Lol the aokp team is pretty pro mate...
sorry unlike u some of us devs have more then just 7z skills or the people u downloaded roms from were just branded stock fail...
N people wonder why most the sgs2 devs left....
and JohnJon if you knew anything you would know miui is just a straight kang of cm with no credit given... The miui team still cant build there own rom from source without borrowing from cm wonder why that is...........
@ the person who asked which is better honestly go Aokp... Alot more customizatons then cm9.. Its fast its stably and you cant go worng with the pink unicorn...

to be honest if u ever have a issue with any rom make sure you start from clean slate wipe every thing wipe it again hell after that wipe it a third time to be safe then install.. Let rom sit for 20 mins before u do anything then add your apps back.. Dont use any restores as alot of times it causes more issues then a simple re download would have done better with.

WOW... That has to be the most disrespectful comment I've ever read. Do you realize how many devices the aokp team supports and how much work they put in for FREE and you go off saying they are a bunch of script kiddie edits.. These are the type of comments that has our section deemed the black sheep of android due to people like this disrespecting real devs. Next time keep your 2 cents in your pocket.
I have tried various builds of AOKP and CM9 and I keep going back to Darkside. TDJ is super helpful; if there are issues he responds light speed and gets them fixed.
AOKP and CM9 are nicer looking, I will give it that. I did, however, find that they are both buggier than darkside ROMS, as an example on both AOKP and CM9 I found that many programs did not recognize my external SD and the usual fixes did not work for me, or they did work and soon the apps would not recognize the external SD again.

Troll attempt?? You have to know how defensive folks get about the dd they choose to run.
Anyway, take features into consideration when choosing. I can't live without MMS over wifi so tmobile builds are the only way to go, for me. I do flash other ROMS pretty regularly but for me pushing the tech and seeing what the devs are capable of is where the real fun is...

which rom?

My buddy has a gs3 and the stock ROM isn't working or for him in terms of battery life. I'm pretty sure it's due to all the bloatware so I plan on rooting and throwing a custom ROM on it. However I don't have a gs3 so I'm not sure what the most stable ROMs with the least amount of bugs are. Suggestions?

Could start with a debloated stock?
Also, does he want TW or AOSP? Once you know the answer to that one, simply search the top threads and go with w/e he likes the best. They all have their features and such in the OP.

That really depends on what type he prefers: stock touchwiz style or aosp based. Everyone has their own opinion. In the Android development section you can find toms that are based on stock firmware. In the original android section are the aosp based roms. I would have him look at and read over the first page of each section. The most active roms are usually on the top half or so of the first page.

Doesn't matter. He's not a power user and will be fine with either. I just want to make sure I give him the most stable ROM since he doesn't tweak experiment like a lot of us do. Based on my previous experience with past phones I automatically towards AOKP but I'm at work and don't have the time to look through all the rom threads to get a feel of which is most stable so I figure I'd just ask.

Task's AOKP is rock solid. Tons of features and great performance. No stability issues for me and I've been running his updates exclusively since December.

Awesome, AOPK it is. Been a big fan of it myself. Only left because of the PA features.
Thanks for all the input everyone. Seems like of all my friends in the only one not using a gs3 lol.

If you haven't used Task's AOKP on an S3, it isn't quite like the AOKP you're probably used to. You'll have to try it out for yourself to see what's different.
