[Q] Galaxy Nexus dropping all sorts of signal - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello.
I bought my Samsung Galaxy Nexus in March(around March 5th). It's a GSM one on the carrier TELUS in Canada.
Now, I converted it to 'yakju' device because I wanted the "Google experience".
Now, the issue I've been having only started this week; when I have the device in stand-by(Just have the screen locked), even if it's on the charger, after a certain amount of time(I have no idea the exact number. I think it's random) it'll drop my Wi-Fi and 3G(/HSPA+) signals. It'll show it as connected, but greyed out. The only way I have found to get it working again is to toggle Wi-Fi on/off or toggle Airplane mode on / off. I don't mind doing this, but I don't think this should be happening.
I am on Android 4.0.4 as of Sunday. But I've had this issue before updating to 4.0.4(Not OTA, did it manually).
Anyway, if you would be so kind, I'd love to know if any of you have a solution to this issue. Simple or not(I'm pretty comfortable using the terminal and fastboot.)
If I had to guess, I'd assume I need to flash a new radio onto my device, but I have no clue.
If I'm missing any info you think I should add just let me know.
Any help is appreciated!

Flash a ug--- radio. Ug radios are for north America.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about. I'm sorry.
Also, any particular radio you have in mind?

There's a recent list of them, try starting with a search next time.

Radio question...

Can anyone give me the link to a thread with a radio update that won't lose me the ability to get newer radio updates? Is this impossible? It's been awhile since the leaked OTA came out and last I saw there were quite a few risks to be had from using it. Are these risks still very much alive?

Yes there are risks. Wait for the official ota radio to be available

Damn... I want Jager 3.2 but it requires the new radio... worth it?
There is a leaked ota radio thread, and it isn't that hard to do, but seeing that unrevoked is running a new version leaked radio in a teaser pic they released, I would wait until tonight when they release their new tool to see if they'll have more info on it.

The TONS of posts of bugs on the 7/23 and 8/1 leaks should be your warning.

Can you reload back to and older radio?
Hello All,
Everything works gr8 except I cannot go on the internet or make calls or sms.. The phone starts up fine running the Android 2.2 and the radio is flashed to 2.05.00.6.11 so when I try to unroot by loading the PB31IMG.zip you get the following in recovery mode.
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
So I am wondering if I will be able to reload the old Radio 1.00.03.04.06
So, I am just wondering since I can still get into my phone is mine bricked due to the fact I cannot logon to the internet and use the phone or send sms/msm messages? I called Verizon and they are telling me it was due to an outage since yesterday,,, but my wifes phone works fine... hmmm,,, not sounding good!
Darn I have never had this happen and have never bricked my phone have always read on these forums for sometime before making the change. Since so many others were able to upgrade thier radio's to 2.05.00.6.11 and run 2.2 I was'nt to worry about this.
I noticed under > setting > call > NBPCD "NBPCD Current Country" What should this setting be mine is sat at United States of America (310) is the 310 the area code?? My area code is (623) and I even tried adding a new one with United states of America and put the reference country and the only selections are (310) through (316) choices? Does anyone know what the correct setting should be for arizona, peoria should be? I just thought maybe the reason I could not reach the internet or phone could be these settings. I have looked through google and the forums and not finding this info.....
Damm I like this phone and if Verizon would get off thier ars and push out the dam 2.2 upgrade we would not be having to deal with this issue, right now! So I may have to use my insurance but I am worried that when they see the 2.05.00.6.11 new radio loaded if I am unable to remove it or root will they still replace my phone?
Again is the defintion I have place above seem like a bricked phone with no hope?
I always have read from the forums a bricked phone is dead, period! Will not let you login at all. Mine works gr8 until you try to the outside world like I said above the internet, sms/mms or use the phone. It won't even let me call *611 or check my phone messages. It will let me run the *228 fine though! Not making sense to me if it's bricked how can I run the *228 then?
Thanks and feeling the pain everyone is due to VERIZONS lack of updating there OS to 2.2!
I was promised as everyone else it would be released back in July now we are in August and looks like alot of people are bricking their phones!
Cheers,

Hey bro, I am flashed baseband 2.05.00.6.11, my call settings are 310 as well, does not match the zip as I am in Houston (281,713,832) just thought I would let you know that looks normal. You didn't by chance flash the radio twice as o read it will brick the radio.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
310 is the mobile country code not an area code and deff not a zip code (zip is 5 digits lol)
and there are diffrent "layers" if you will of bricking .. your phone still turns on so its not a brick yet... some people seem to have had issues with usb bricking where the phone would not communicate via usb (or be able to mount the sd card) and other people freaked out and pulled the battery during flash's and bricked there phones to not work at all ... sounds like verizon could be right though does she have an older phone ? there are directions to revert back to the old radio or you can wait for s-off

I'm not positive, but I believe that, because you've flashed the leaked Radio, you can't just use the PB31 file to downgrade or unroot anymore. I'm pretty sure you'll need to use RUU. I don't have time to find the threads, but they're plenty of them, it's an existing process. My advice, though? As always, read the entire instruction set AND the entire thread for potential pitfalls first. It didn't appear to be a process for those uncomfortable with ADB, etc.

[Q] Is there a FREE way to turn off radio only?

I want to be able to turn off the Radio only so that when I'm Wire-Tethered to my PC and playing a game I don't get any calls or texts to slow down my connection or be disturbed.
I found a thread in general where someone advised using tasker but it's $6 and I just want to be able to disable radio only. Airplane mode kills everything.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
There has to be a way...
There might be a way to do it via dial pad commands. I know that I was able to do this on a Droid in the past. I'm looking into, but make no promises.
edit:
Ok, this is what I've come up with.
*#INFO*1111# - Testing mode
Go into Phone Info...
Scroll down to Set preferred network type:
CDMA only
This should make it so the only cellular connection would be a data connection.
For my phone WCDMA Preferred is the default, which should be what you want to go back to to allow phone calls again.
Let me know if that works for you?
There's an app I used when I was on Eclair called Widgetsoid. It was the ability to toggle pretty much anything u can think of on your phone. I havent installed it since upgrading to Froyo so I can't verify that it can do what you need but its free and probably worth the download in any case. Check it out and let me know.

No it doesn't but I tried it anyway and found that no, it really doesn't. Thanks for trying though. I'm having a brainfart on typing letters into the dialer... how is that done again?

Just goto the phone dialer and type in those exact *,# and numbers (info is 4636)
once you put in the last # it will take you to the "testing" menu.
Let me know how it goes.
OK, I see it... will let you know how it works... Also, aren't our phones supposed to be set to CDMA? It had unknown and now it shows WCDMA. Isn't this the cause of the TWS bug?

It is the cause of the TWS bug. Our phones are constantly searching for a gsm signal never to be found. Causing battery drain. It has to do with the Galaxy S i9000 being gsm and samsungs poor ability to make changes to the coding.
Sent from my always stock, froyo Epic
This actually assisted in correcting or at least varifying another problem's solution. I've seen forum discussions point to PRL updates solving the TWS issue but other say it doesn't. However I installed sprintzone and let it install the PRL for my area. In doing so it set the default radio search shown using steve's info trick shown above. And no more TWS after reboots.
Woohoo!

[Q] Native tethering on ICS

Hi everyone‚ I got my galaxy nexus last week from expansys - so far so good‚ it's an awesome phone.
I've read on multiples places that the GN has support for native wifi and usb tethering via an option under the Wireless & network menu. However I can't seem to find it. I know there are apps that will allow it but I'd rather use the native option if at all avalible. Plus, it was said the former method did not require rooting the device.
Was the option removed from the stock rom ? (I have an ITL41F build - GSM model‚ android 4.0.1). Or was it never there in the first place ? If so it's fine I'll just root the device and use a third party app‚ but I‘m curious to know what happend to this option.
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me to sort this out.

Yes that's what I'm talking about. But I'm not seeing it on my phone : I have 6 options under Wireless & network > more‚ the last one being 'Mobile networks'.
Why is that?
It sounds like you have a version that has that option removed for some reason. This is something carriers sometimes do, but I'm not sure why it would be missing from one you bought through Expansys. I definitely have it on my stock yakjuux (Canadian) ROM.
There are several versions of the stock ROM. You could try flashing the official Google factory images which should definitely have wifi hotspot.
There are already threads about the different stock ROM versions and how to change to the "official" (yakju) one, so I won't get into that here.
Thank you for your reply.
Well now I'm sure it's been remove/disabled from my rom. I will give flashing the official rom a try - sadly I won't be able to do so for the next couple days.
I'm confused though‚ I was confident I had a 'pure' yakju build‚ and the thread you linked in your post seems to comfirm it (ITL41F/I9250XXKk1).
To find out for sure, install Android System Info and look under System > BuildInfos > Product to see which version you have now.

It says yakju all right. Do you guys with others yakju build in 4.0.1 have that tethering option?
Now i‛m even more confused. How come I don't? It can't have to do with my sim card or the location of my google account right?
the developers of Wifi Tether
were working on it last night... I can't say I was helping, but I did test the latest one on my Nexus Galaxy (pre110).
Have connected my MacBook Pro, Windows 7, Viewsonic Gtablet, and OpenBSD laptop all at the same time. works great for me. Some people have had issues with spontaneous reboots.
Sorry I can't post links (stupid posts rules). Do a search for "issue 1257".
give it a try...

I'm sorry I don't follow. What are you suggesting?
Brake‚ I understand your are talking about the Wifi Tether app‚ which is great‚ but my original intention was to figure out why my yakju build doesn't have the native usb and wifi tethering option when others do‚ and bring it back.
Well‚ if I don't find any other lead I'll just just flash in the lastest yakju version from google and see if that fixes it.
Thanks for your time everyone.
Hello,
I have the same "behaviour" : don't have the personal hotspot and all info on the phone say me I was with the official yakju build in 4.0.1.
Buy phone from uk and use french sim.
Let's us know if you have this option after you flash (if you want to flash )
David.
Hi folks,
same here... I just bought a galaxy nexus in France, v4.0.1 ITL41D I9250XXKK1 and I don't have any tethering option in my Network menu
As far as I understand, I though that ITL41D was the "real" google build... So what can I do now ? I can't
It's nice to be allowed to use this option, but I cannot enable it :-D
My stock build (yakjuux) came with tethering, and it's also in the 4.0.3 AOSP build.
I'd flash Google's stock images.
I have a yakju built, 4.0.1 and i got its uk unlocked version. From the start i had portable wifi hotspot and it works great. Really surprised that its not showing up for u. Did u buy the phone outright did u get it w contract?

As I already mentioned I bought it from expansys, so yes it's SIM free and no contract. I am in France, using a french SIM (maybe that's the problem?) and I'm pretty confident it was shipped from the UK, but I might be wrong.
I can confirm I have a yakju build (4.0.1, ITL41F I9250XXKK1, yup no updates so far).
I'm guessing flashing in another Google 'official' yakju build in 4.0.3 wouldn't help much. Or is it worth trying? Couldn't the OS display the tethering option depending on the SIM card? Or is it possible it was removed from my ROM even though it says yakju and I bought it SIM free?
PS: I am as much interested in getting the option back as to know who is to blame for its disappearance.
Alright so my SIM card seems to be the problem here: If I boot the phone in airplane mode‚ the tethering and portable hotspot option is visible - though not of great help under theses conditions. However, as soon as I disable airplane mode, it disappears right before my eyes.
What information on the sim card could tell ICS to disable the option? Should I complain about it to my carrier?
Same problem here. Bought in france, from expansys, with a french sim card. No tethering option available. Google's firmware.
Booting in airplane mode, the menu is there.
My nexus S, updated to ICS, still show the option!

Definitely sim related. The strange thing is that my nexus s is showing the option!

Desire Z on WIND Mobile (which radio version)

Has anyone figured out which radio version works best with WIND Mobile in Canada?
My phone seems to randomly lose data connection. To get data back, I turn mobile data off then on again. It happens so frequently, I have it in my Notification window as a toggle.
I have Automatcher v7 to match RIL with radio version. I also have wipe EFS.
Thanks,

Use latest Radio from T-Mobile 26.13.04.19_M, I'm on it, have never lost 3.5 G data connection
I am currently running ILWT but experienced the same running CM 7, ICS Audacity and ICS Quattro.
I have flashed the newest TMobile ROM a few times.. It must be the WIND network here.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA
Update
I don't think it is the network. My father's Amaze does not have this problem in the same places.
ILWT has been the most reliable ROM for me so far. I am currently running Andromadus b4 and am considering switching back because of the data drop-out issue. I have tried 5 different radio versions now.
It must be the ROM. Perhaps it encounters some data it can't make sense of and crashes. Perhaps it just needs to restart itself when this happens. A simple mobile data off, mobile data on fixes it almost every time.
I also find the bars reading incorrect. I be driving down the road with my screen on and the charger plugged in, and it will show me full bars. I can pull over and park for a few minutes, bars still full. Then suddenly half bars, no bars. This behavior is from a device that isn't being physically surrounded / shielded and is stationary.
Anyways, my G2 is getting old and it needs a another core to keep up with the way I now use it. I will wait for Jelly Bean but will likely switch to IOS.
Reasons If You Care
The menu button disaster is a big one for me. Also the lack of quick updates from Google for Nexus S and Nexus One. These devices should have had OS updates released on the same day the Galaxy Nexus was released.
ICS should have been backwards compatible for older devices as well. A few #ifdef in the code for fancy screen rendering and such. Big, huge fail!
Google, also, should have required no physical menu button for access to Google apps to enforce the new way. With only like 7% ICS market share no wonder app devs write for GB.
Google's handling of Android updates has opened my eyes.

The issue isn't ICS. The issue is the vendors haven't released proper drivers for ICS. What we're dealing with is code we've hacked up to make things work. If the vendors released ICS source code for our devices things would be much more stable.
We're always working within our means. It's not Android/Google's fault and it's not an ICS issue, it's just circumstance.
Thanks
I realize where most of the issues lie. I am an EE grad so I can imagine how difficult hacking ROMs together without device drivers might be.
Writing ASM for a microproc with the datasheets is bad enough. Without knowing what each control register is for and what each bit controls, it is a guessing game at best. I get that.
I very much do appreciate your work. As you are aware, from reading my post, I run a ROM you contribute to. Thank you. You have prolonged the life / pleasure balance I require from my smartphone.
I would contribute more to the development, but my post count was less than 10. I was actually working towards my 10 posts today to post in the dev forums. (The Andromadus beta 4 thread to be more precise).

Drop by #g2ics on freenode if you're interested
I have the same issues, G2 on Wind as well. I've had some ROMs where it never occured, but then they had some kind of bug that left me unhappy. I'm currently on CM 7.2 RC1, and I keep a "data" toggle in my notification bar. When it drops I toggle it off and on and it connects again pretty quickly. Until about twelve months ago, MMS was unreliable, but I don't seem to have problems with that anymore.
In general I'm not happy with Android, but as the alternatives are all utterly closed systems I guess I'm stuck with it. It would be unbearable if it weren't for the hard work of all the developers around this forum. Thanks, developers
Agreed. Google has been a huge let down for me as well. Updates are slow or non existent in Canada (even on Nexus devices). Look at the percentage of devices that run ICS. JB is what ICS was supposed to be. I may get an iPhone for work. I am excited to compare it to my Samsung S3 on CM10.

AT&T Galaxy S3 Wifi Problerm

Hello all,
I only recently updated to the Galaxy S3 on AT&T and noticed that Wifi is practically useless.
It constantly loses connection. An app may download 30% or 50% of 70%, and then stop. Eventually it will connect again and then finish the download.
Maybe I can see a few webpages, and then it I get page not available notice.
I have read that an update fixed this problem, but I don't know if it is true.
Please let me know if there is a software update for this problem.
I only have a couple of days left to return the phone, and if I can't use wifi I may do so.
My phone information is below:
Model Number Samsung SGH-i747
Android Version 4.0.4
Baseband version I747UCLEM
Kernel version 3.0.8-599060-user
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Tue May 22 02:16:30 KST 2012
Build number
IMM76D.I747UCALEM
Thanks,
rblancrt
I have seen versions from July? which are I747UCLH9 and read that this update fixed wifi problems.
If this is true how do I update to this version now.
I have not rooted this phone, but have no problem doing so. However I would like to keep it unrooted as I may have to return it soon.
Of course when I check for updates from the phone it says that there are none available.
Help!
try using kies to update your phone. also try dialing *#0011#, pressing menu, selecting wifi, and turning 'wifi powersaving mode' to off
also fyi this goes in q&a report your post and categorize it as maintenance and say it's in the wrong section.

Hello! You're actually using an older firmware version. You should be on 4.1.1. Keis is pretty simple you just need to download, install, then plug your phone in and it should do the rest for you. If you've ever used an iphone or Ipod it works pretty much the same as Itunes (as far as updating your phone). The Samsung website is: http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/ About half way down the page you'll see the download links. Update to 4.1.1 and see if you're still having the issues.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, I did download Keis and got it to recognize my phone but had to charge it again, so haven't done the update yet.
Thanks for the replies
As was said, upgrade the software first. Then try disabling power saving. Uncheck avoid poor connections if you have such a setting. If nothing works try checking your router's conf if you have access to it, or install WiFix if you're experiencing region-related issues. Good luck.
Thanks... Will try the upgrade tomorrow. I went to att store. They were very good at ignoring or talking about something else when I asked about updates. I would never have gotten anywhere with them.
I have a Samsung vibrant and have flashed many roms and themes and know where to go for knowledgeable assistance..... HERE.
Will post my results tomorrow.
Thanks again

Did the firmware upgrade. Unfortunately still have a problem with wifi. Most of the time can't even make it through "Speed Test" app.
Tried turning Wifi power save off.
Not sure what else to do
Thanks anyway. As usual a problem with Samsung phone. Last time GPS, this time Wifi.
So silly

Never had an issue with a Samsung phone (except unforgivable GPS on OG Galaxy S)
Do you want to root the phone or are you staying stock for now ?
Root or stay stock?

If I keep it I'm sure I will root it. I actually had it rooted about a week ago and then went back to stock thinking I might have to return it.
If you have any suggestions that require root I'm very willing to hear them.
Thanks.
Dude you have the old firmware I suggest you get on Kies and update your phone to the latest firmware which is I747UCDLK3
Seems to be working

Well I reset my router and WiFi is working finally. Just that I'm afraid to disconnect now but will have to eventually.
Thanks to all who replied

By the way, thanks to all who replied to my question. I did get my firmware updated through KIES because of the info I would here.
When I mentioned any updates at the AT&T store I was pretty much ignored and the subject was changed. Just switched to AT&T recently and so far I have realized that the employees in their store are taught to be very polite, and it seems to get you out of the door without necessarily answering your question or fixing your problem. I guess they figure you will find it difficult to get upset with someone who is polite to you.
I have been there twice now and I hate it. It's like they are talking to you like you are an idiot.
