[Q] Is there a FREE way to turn off radio only? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to be able to turn off the Radio only so that when I'm Wire-Tethered to my PC and playing a game I don't get any calls or texts to slow down my connection or be disturbed.
I found a thread in general where someone advised using tasker but it's $6 and I just want to be able to disable radio only. Airplane mode kills everything.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

There has to be a way...

There might be a way to do it via dial pad commands. I know that I was able to do this on a Droid in the past. I'm looking into, but make no promises.
edit:
Ok, this is what I've come up with.
*#INFO*1111# - Testing mode
Go into Phone Info...
Scroll down to Set preferred network type:
CDMA only
This should make it so the only cellular connection would be a data connection.
For my phone WCDMA Preferred is the default, which should be what you want to go back to to allow phone calls again.
Let me know if that works for you?

There's an app I used when I was on Eclair called Widgetsoid. It was the ability to toggle pretty much anything u can think of on your phone. I havent installed it since upgrading to Froyo so I can't verify that it can do what you need but its free and probably worth the download in any case. Check it out and let me know.

details of what this app can do are on the developer's website:
http://jaumard.android.free.fr/widgetsoid/
Doesn't list being able to disable text/voice while keeping data alive.

Thanks guys I'll check out both of those!

No it doesn't but I tried it anyway and found that no, it really doesn't. Thanks for trying though. I'm having a brainfart on typing letters into the dialer... how is that done again?

Just goto the phone dialer and type in those exact *,# and numbers (info is 4636)
once you put in the last # it will take you to the "testing" menu.
Let me know how it goes.

OK, I see it... will let you know how it works... Also, aren't our phones supposed to be set to CDMA? It had unknown and now it shows WCDMA. Isn't this the cause of the TWS bug?

It works great... Thanks!

Happy to help. I'm not sure exactly why it starts with WCDMA and then goes to unknown, haven't really looked into it too much.

It is the cause of the TWS bug. Our phones are constantly searching for a gsm signal never to be found. Causing battery drain. It has to do with the Galaxy S i9000 being gsm and samsungs poor ability to make changes to the coding.
Sent from my always stock, froyo Epic

This actually assisted in correcting or at least varifying another problem's solution. I've seen forum discussions point to PRL updates solving the TWS issue but other say it doesn't. However I installed sprintzone and let it install the PRL for my area. In doing so it set the default radio search shown using steve's info trick shown above. And no more TWS after reboots.
Woohoo!

Is there a way to force roaming?

I'm tired of weak signal areas where I slip in and out of roaming, is there a forced roaming app or some type of hack/mod where I can make my phone roam?
You have two choices:
1) Load a Verizon PRL. This involves a good amount of trickery (I haven't tested it myself) but there's instructions around here. This will get your 3G data as well.
2) Get a ROM such as CyanogenMod which has a forced-roaming option. Open up Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks and in there will be an option to select what group (Home Only, Affiliated Networks, Automatic. Automatic is default) of networks to choose. By selecting Affiliated Networks, that will enable forced-roaming, but will only give you 1X data, not 3G.
For calls, Twitter, and push notifications, the 1X data roaming will suffice, especially if you want to switch back and forth (ie, the bad signal is only at work, but you have good reception everywhere else). Personally, I switch to Affiliated Networks when I'm at work, as getting calls and texts is a lot more important for my job than just being able to download a webpage faster.
Damn so I'd have to switch to a ****ty rom to get the option?
That sucks, I don't know how to change the prl so I'm stuck

A ****ty ROM? That's kind of harsh dude... i thought that someone had an app that did the same thing as the affiliated network switch in CM6?

"****ty ROM"? Have you even tried CM6 Final? Furthermore, go screw yourself with a rusty rake. Nobody's going to help an ungrateful prick.
weehooherod said:
Changing the PRL isn't actually that hard. You download the PRL file and just put it on your memory card. Then you download the application called "MSL Reader" from the market and it will tell you your 6 digit MSL code. Then you go to your phone dialer and type in ##PRL# and it will prompt you to put in your MSL. Then you click on the 00001.prl file (which is the only one there) and then press the menu button and then press commit and you're done.
Here is the original thread I got this from.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073&highlight=evdo+sprint
If dialing ##PRL# doesn't do anything you need to swap out the EPST.apk file with a EPST.apk file that will support these dialer codes. Here is that thread too.

That requires that EPST even works for your ROM, and unless you have the ever-so-wonderful battery and CPU hogging Sense UI, it won't.

I called it ****ty because it doesn't even have sense and I guess I can adjust to not having it, but the 4G doesn't work!

Actually I'm very grateful that you took the time to help, didn't mean to offend, I apologize if you took it that way (now that I re-read my comment, I see why you took it that way) but I was just frustrated because I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, either go through with a procedure I'm not comfortable with OR flashing a ROM that (and this is the whole reason I called it ****ty) doesn't have sense nor does it even have 4G - one of the MAIN REASONS FOR ME BUYING THE PHONE! Understand my dilemma?
I use 4G regularly, so CM6 is a huge no-no for me.
once again, I apologize if you took offense to my comment.

Yes If you have root there is now. Roam Control on the market by Mr Greg. 5 bucks think. I rooted my EVO yesterday Stock 2.2. Then I bought roam control. I can verify this works on the stock rom.

Did the same thing few days ago, works great! Few places I go that sprint signal is very low and drains battery, switching to roam on verizon makes the battery last a lot longer.

[Q] disabling cell radio?

I want to intentionally disable the phone from making any phone calls. I'm running cm7.1 on my evo and I want it to be like a dedicated mp3 player with android market access.
I don't want to use airplane mode; I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can't be easily toggled.
I tried freezing com.android.phone and the dialer storage with titanium backup, but then market compatibility broke. Market returned server error.
Possible fixes (that I've thought of) :
Disabling radio driver?
Tricking market to not depend on phone?
Some phone or cm setting I'm missing?
Permanent airplane mode that still doesn't bug out wifi?
I know on cm builds of tablets (nook color and gtab) know that its a tablet and not a phone, and doesn't come with a phone option. Short of compiling my own build of cm7 (which if it's easy enough ill do), is there a way to trick cm7 into thinking it's a tablet?

Airplane mode is the only way. Once you turn it on, it's really not easy to turn it back off, you have to go to settings-wireless and networks.

Is there a way to set it and remove the option?
I know on Ubuntu Linux, specifically grub bootloader, and each of the options were available to edit on a conf file. I edited mine on my computer and added and deleted lines on mine. Does the android setting rely on a similar conf file?

I am using tapatalk app and it won't show me all my subscribed threads, but I'm pretty sure in general a guy made a thread about how he did it for an EVO he gave to his daughter or something, it listed what you needed to remove. Sorry I realize that's not too helpful, but I will check back here tomorrow and if you didn't find it, I'll post a link.

EDIT: after reading the thread, i kinda don't want to rock sense. that thread isn't applicable is it? i'll try forking around with my cm7.1.zip and see if i can get similar results.
FFS, if you're the one that's gonna be using it, then just don't make calls. You can always toggle Airplane mode off, btw, to use the market.
Just flash amon ra and r2r going green, its sense 3.0 very stable & clean. It's got a built in option to turn off radio

Two posts above completely missed the point.
A) IM NOT LOOKING FOR AIRPLANE MODE SETTING UNDER WIRELESS AND NETWORKS.
B) IM NOT USING SENSE. JUST NO.
c) what I am looking for is a configuration file, and if you've never edited grub or Apache etc, you'll never understand what I mean. I haven't tried the apk removal yet, but I will in a sec
Thanks for your help pointing to the apk removal thread, but I'm hoping for real developer suppot here

Goodluck finding dev help. They are few and far between for the EVO anymore. I suggest downloading the Android sdk, finding some threads on here and other forums and learning it yourself. Biting the hand that feeds isn't going to help.
Boo
solved. Procedure:
1 Flash cm7 and gapps.
2 Let all the gapps install and update in the background.
3 Install titanium backup from newest updated market.
4 Make backup of dialer and dialer storage (com.android.phone and com.android.telephony)
5 Uninstall phone, and battery pull when it force close loops
6 Uninstall dialer storage after the reboot finishes
7 Wifi should still work the market!

[Q] GS3 TMO: CM10 JB ROM + wifi calling?

Hey guys, i have a few questions
i have a tmobile gs3 and am passionately waiting for the JB OTA update. Untill then however, i would love to use CM10 JB ROM. THe only problem is that it doesnt have the tmobile wifi "built-in" app for that. So does anyone know a way for that to happen? (PM me if you know a way).
Also, currently im am using ICS and it seems like i need at least one bar of cellular coverage for wifi to work. If i am not registering a cellular network, my wifi will not work. I noticed this pretty recently and was wondering if it is like that normally. Are there apps or fixes that can allow you to use wifi if you are not registering cellular network at all (kinda like an airplane mode)?
Thanks alot
I will donate to developers if they can help me out
Don't want to be one of those people, but there are a lot of threads on it. But, pretty much, unless it has changed recently, there isn't a wifi-calling for any CM stuff yet and not sure if there will be. Some people were working on a project. There are other roms out there that do have working wifi calling though, might want to take a look at those.
Also, you don't need cell signal for the wifi calling to work.

What do u mean a WiFi built in app? Also have u tried any new radios for cell coverage? And WiFi does not need any cellular service at all

thanks for quick reply guys.
i have had cm10 jb on my gs3 and then i decided that i needed tmobile wifi calling. so once i downloaded stock ics from samsung and installed it, my wifi calling only works when i am registering the cellular network. If i dont have any bars (and wifi is connected) it won't call at all. wjat could be the fix for this?

Well if u flashed the stock ROM with Odin like u said let it boot up then go into stock recovery or if u have a custom recovery wipe data and caches. To get in it is the same way either way. Vol up, home, and power at same time
I just moved to CM10 a few minutes ago and personally, I don't know how I would ever go back to anything less than this. Why worry about WiFi calling when there are plenty of VoIP alternatives that use Google Voice?

can i somehow set it up so that when my tmobile number is unavailable, it redirects it to google voice? But only when my number is unavailable (as in i wouldn't want to set the redirect every time i am planning to go off service). The thing is that i go to school and i see patients all day long, and in some places i have reception and in some i dont. its very irregular and unpredictable. so if i could set it up in the way that "if unavailable, redirect to google voice" type of thing, i would be a happy camper.
Oh and also, even my google voice does not work if i am not registering a cellular network just a bit. (help with this too?)
thanks guys

im not sure what i did, but i know that i did not specifically erase any data. it just seems that wifi calling is an integral part of the firmware that any "random" data on the phone should no phase it. hmm...
Can someone confirm that CM10 JB has a option in the Phone App menu to forward a call when unreachable? I donw want to go thru the hassle of installing it if it doesnt have that option.

There should be a setting for phone forwarding just like any other OS/phone. Just change it to your GV number and should be GTG.

Wi-Fi only when home network is available

Is there a way to setup the phone so it will only use your home wifi when it is available? I don't want to manually have to change this all the time. I want it to use my home network when it can connect to it. If it can't then use 4g. Anyone?

In cyanogen there are profiles you can set.
But if you're stock there are third party apps that you can use. I believe they even track your location to know if you're home or not.
Or just leave WiFi on all the time and it will connect when in range. But might kill your battery quicker since it will be scanning constantly

My wife uses [email protected] ---> https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hZWJlaW5yb3RoLndpZmlob21lIl0.
They both work. LLama does so much more than what you desire and [email protected] only does what you want.

Click the thanks button on the left side under the name and post count. If you're on the xda app just click the post.
I'm pretty sure the phone will only connect to a network when you tell it to so you can just leave wifi on. From my experience wifi didn't really use that much more power. It'll just connect automatically within range.
Additionally, there's ways to change the scan interval times so it doesn't check constantly.
If you wanna impress some folks buy some Nfc tags and set them up.

Not had this myself, sounds like the cellular connection is going to sleep and not waking when your note 2 polls for a connection. Are you on a stock rom or a custom, can you post your android version number as well, will help anyone else who posts who may have more information for you.
If your rooted you could try pulling a log at the time you switch connections see if that yields any useful data.
Same here on a german device. I use manually select the Provider. Then it connect. Thank you for the tip with the airplane mode. But I search a way to kick this big. In a german forum a member says that a Fullwipe helps.

Give this a go, should allow you to create a log during the time you have the problem then you can see what android is or is not doing at the time.

Not something I have had myself but my gf has this same problem with her gs3. After having a look around our seems to be fairly common on the gs3 so any help with a fix would be great. I can only assume that it's something that will be fixed with a fw update from Samsung.
