Wi-Fi only when home network is available - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Is there a way to setup the phone so it will only use your home wifi when it is available? I don't want to manually have to change this all the time. I want it to use my home network when it can connect to it. If it can't then use 4g. Anyone?

In cyanogen there are profiles you can set.
But if you're stock there are third party apps that you can use. I believe they even track your location to know if you're home or not.
Or just leave WiFi on all the time and it will connect when in range. But might kill your battery quicker since it will be scanning constantly

Thanks for your response. How do you give someone a thank you or whatever its called? Someone flipped me **** because I hadnt given any. I dont know how.

I use LLama ---> https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5rZWJhYi5MbGFtYSJd
My wife uses [email protected] ---> https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hZWJlaW5yb3RoLndpZmlob21lIl0.
They both work. LLama does so much more than what you desire and [email protected] only does what you want.

Click the thanks button on the left side under the name and post count. If you're on the xda app just click the post.
I'm pretty sure the phone will only connect to a network when you tell it to so you can just leave wifi on. From my experience wifi didn't really use that much more power. It'll just connect automatically within range.

Additionally, there's ways to change the scan interval times so it doesn't check constantly.

If you wanna impress some folks buy some Nfc tags and set them up.

[Q] Wi-Fi Goes to sleep. Policy: Never. Any way to fix it?

*Edit* Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to never.
It seems like the Wi-Fi goes to "sleep" on the DHD. I installed VLC Remote a little while ago, and after 1-2 minutes the controller will not work. I had to quit the app and reconnect for it to work.
I did a test by pinging the DHD from my computer while the VLC Remote was active, turned off the screen several times. It worked perfect!
I then stopped the pinging and after 1-2 minutes the VLC Remote stopped responding. I pressed the pause button several times, nothing happened.
Then I started the ping back up (the VLC Remote was still open) and after a 2-3 "Request canceled" (no ping reply back from the phone) it got a response from the ping and the VLC Remote worked again.
Is there any way to make the Wi-Fi not go to "sleep"? It's annoying me to stop/start the remote every time I want to pause the movie.
I tried turning Best Wi-Fi performance on, but that didn't help
Thanks!
select the wifi settings, then press the menu button and select advanced, change the wifi sleep policy to never and your laughing

Thanks for the reply fkofilee. It's already set to "never". Updated the original post and title with it.
I restarted the phone and did some more testing.
As long as the screen is on there are no problems (VLC Remote responds), but when I hit the on/off button on the top of the phone to turn the screen off and turn the screen back on after a couple of minutes, VLC Remote will not respond. I have to ping the phone for VLC Remote to respond again.
Any suggestions?
same here, have to disconnect/connect to wifi to get it going again. Really frustrating when my exchangesync fails. Work as a IT-administrator and have to get serverfails reported as soon as possible.

I also have this issue its so annoying. I could be connected to wifi and have bars and then go to download something from the market it will pause and when I go into network setting its says wifi is authenticating but it doesnt change so I have to turn off and back on to get it working again. I had a Iphone 3gs and never had wifi issues like this.

I don't think we have the same problem. Downloading seems fine. When I ping it (while running VLC Remote), it works fine. I can shut the screen off, turn it back on 10 min later and it works fine. It seems like it goes into a type of "sleep mode" when there is no active traffic to/from the phone.
I sent an e-mail to HTC about this problem. I'll keep you guys updated.
Dont know if you do or are into mods but if you root your phone and flash clockwork mod you could try and push a new wifi module using root explorer...or even flash a custom rom...Pretty sure this would fix it..
Depends how much you know about this stuff though..
I can help you through it if you want to...some people dont want to though and I cant blame them...

Thanks rixsta! I'm gonna do a custom ROM, but I'm gonna wait until Gingerbread is released and custom ROMs have been made for that.
Are you up for testing if this is a problem on your ROM? If so, is this fixed with a new wifi module?
*Edit* With LeeDroid 1.2 and Buzz 1,22Ghz v1.0.2 it fixed the problem! I also sent a mail to HTC and they have forwarded it to the programmers.

I'm using leedroid's Rom so can't test and I've just got it working great..but...why don't you just root with visionary and pay £2.50 for root explorer and move a new WiFi module...that's all you need..
Up to you really..you could use Apache oc kernel...you will need to s off with this method and buy setcpu from the market...if your going to be doing custom roms in the future then you will need to do this anyways...if you need help let me know...I can tell you where to get the WiFi file from...

I have the same problem too, but it only happens with the mail application and the market, while the browser and XDA app works without having to reconnect the wireless connection.
Suggestions?
Nixx
My friend has the same problem and I don't want to install a custom ROM on her phone.
Any news regarding this issue?

Is there an app that automatically disables and re-enables wifi on a set scheudle?

I use "Wifi Auto Toggle" now to turn wifi on/off when I forget about it, but I have a problem where my wireless will randomly get stuck "authenticating" with my school's WPA network so it will appear to be connected without any problems, but you won't be able to access the internet with it. This means that Wifi Auto Toggle won't think to disconnect it, so it will sit there until I pick up my phone and realize that I need to reconnect. Any suggestions are welcome!
You can use tasker to turn the wifi on and off depending on time, location, whether the phone is plugged in, etc. It's confusing at first but it works wonders!!

I'd prefer an app that isn't $6... Also, it just needs to toggle the wifi on a set schedule (say, every 15 minutes). That way I could easily turn it on or off depending on where I am.
Saw an app call Modus Operandi in the main app forum that might do what you want (kind of a free Tasker alternative). I use Tasker though so I don't know how well this app works...

Or you can use Llama : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888181
I user Timeriffic. It's free and works great.

Help with wireless tether app

I just rooted my phone mostly for the WiFi but it's doing something a little strange now. Whenever I turn on the Wireless Tether app it shows multiple access points coming from my phone, 5 to be exact. Is there something I'm missing, a way to clear the unwanted names?
Have a screenshot?

Yep, here's what my wireless connections pop up as when I turn on the "Wireless Tether" app.
Note: The Top "Walker" is my home network and the rest are all generated by the phone.
Try reseeting the app and then try activating wpa.Tht way only authorized users can access ur wifi

You are not alone.
I used os monitor to see 5 occurrences of internet active - sometimes more.
They won't kill and effect memory terribly. Sometimes a reboot is required, however, the internet occurences are still there. The reboot only clears some memory to allow evo to run fast again.
I have no idea how to fix.
By the way, what app did you use to see those occurances. I'd like to check it out.
Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion that is actually a screen shot of my desktop to show multiple access points being listed. I wish there was an app that looked like that to show available wifi.
You get non of those (in your screen shot) when your phone is off?
It's a wildcard, but possible your neighbors have evo's too and running the tether software...

Negative, I can visibly watch them pop up when I turn the tether on and they go away as soon as i turn it off. It also seemed that when I tried to rename one instead of renaming one of them, it would make another access point. Very peculiar.
FWIW...I switched to CM6 and it's all cleared up.
Yea I was gonna say, that's your computer if you change the name and your computer keeps the old ones and adds the new one. My laptop does that too but I can remove them individually.

[Q] Is there a FREE way to turn off radio only?

I want to be able to turn off the Radio only so that when I'm Wire-Tethered to my PC and playing a game I don't get any calls or texts to slow down my connection or be disturbed.
I found a thread in general where someone advised using tasker but it's $6 and I just want to be able to disable radio only. Airplane mode kills everything.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
There has to be a way...
There might be a way to do it via dial pad commands. I know that I was able to do this on a Droid in the past. I'm looking into, but make no promises.
edit:
Ok, this is what I've come up with.
*#INFO*1111# - Testing mode
Go into Phone Info...
Scroll down to Set preferred network type:
CDMA only
This should make it so the only cellular connection would be a data connection.
For my phone WCDMA Preferred is the default, which should be what you want to go back to to allow phone calls again.
Let me know if that works for you?
There's an app I used when I was on Eclair called Widgetsoid. It was the ability to toggle pretty much anything u can think of on your phone. I havent installed it since upgrading to Froyo so I can't verify that it can do what you need but its free and probably worth the download in any case. Check it out and let me know.

Just goto the phone dialer and type in those exact *,# and numbers (info is 4636)
once you put in the last # it will take you to the "testing" menu.
Let me know how it goes.
OK, I see it... will let you know how it works... Also, aren't our phones supposed to be set to CDMA? It had unknown and now it shows WCDMA. Isn't this the cause of the TWS bug?

It is the cause of the TWS bug. Our phones are constantly searching for a gsm signal never to be found. Causing battery drain. It has to do with the Galaxy S i9000 being gsm and samsungs poor ability to make changes to the coding.
Sent from my always stock, froyo Epic
This actually assisted in correcting or at least varifying another problem's solution. I've seen forum discussions point to PRL updates solving the TWS issue but other say it doesn't. However I installed sprintzone and let it install the PRL for my area. In doing so it set the default radio search shown using steve's info trick shown above. And no more TWS after reboots.
Woohoo!

Not had this myself, sounds like the cellular connection is going to sleep and not waking when your note 2 polls for a connection. Are you on a stock rom or a custom, can you post your android version number as well, will help anyone else who posts who may have more information for you.
If your rooted you could try pulling a log at the time you switch connections see if that yields any useful data.
Same here on a german device. I use manually select the Provider. Then it connect. Thank you for the tip with the airplane mode. But I search a way to kick this big. In a german forum a member says that a Fullwipe helps.

Give this a go, should allow you to create a log during the time you have the problem then you can see what android is or is not doing at the time.

Not something I have had myself but my gf has this same problem with her gs3. After having a look around our seems to be fairly common on the gs3 so any help with a fix would be great. I can only assume that it's something that will be fixed with a fw update from Samsung.
