Unlock with normal method or testpoint (drm data keept)
Get root/cwm
Find your rom and fitting kernel
Flash.
If you just go first to general selection theres a lot fully made threads about unlocking and getting CWM. (on top, the pinned ones)
Then go to dev. selection so find your rom and follow the guide to flash

I'm struggling to find any guides. I only want to flash so I can get a ROM that has auto brightness turned off as on the stock ROM it's really annoying. Do I NEED to unlock my bootloader first?

Please could you break it down for me?
I'm so confused

You guys can't search? It's on stickies :/

So I don't need to downgrade anything??
In those steps where do I flash CWM?

nope not required..this is the best short cut and time saving + safe...try it and let us know..
CWM is in custom kernel..u dont need to flash it seperately...

Just flash a kernel & you can use CWM to flash a rom

Thanks,
Do I just follow the steps in this link
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
To unlock the bootloader?

yea..follow that..
All the best

I have now unlocked the bootloader
I now want to flash a custom ICS ROM, I now need to find a kernal to flash?
Thanks

yea...either stock ICS kernel or doom kernel for ICS beta..

Which ICS ROM Would you suggest? I just downloaded the Doom Kernel + Modules.
Thanks

I'm trying to flash the doomKernels boot.img in fastboot, I have put the ARC-DooMKernel-ICS-BETA-v04-lower-boot.img file in the platform-tools folder, I'm using the command fastboot flash boot ARC-DooMKernel-ICS-BETA-v04-lower-boot and it's saying it cannot load.
Any help please?
actually it says
'[ requirements ]
stock SE ICS Beta FW* (i havent tested on other ROMs so i cannot guarantee that it will work on them!)'
so I need to install stock firmware first?

Help! Arc S rooting and custom ROM installtion

Hi friends..
I m coming from motorola defy..recently bought xperia arc s
but i have few doubts..and need to be cleared..
1: So flashtool is used to install everything? from rooting to custom ROM?
2: my arc's software version is 4.0.2.A.0.62..so how to root it using flashtool after unlocking bootloader?
3: and how to 'flash' a baseband? heard there are different types of baseband.. and are they based on country? like in india we use 850Mhz for 2G and 2100MHz for 3G.
Please guide me as i m new to unlocked bootloader world
aleast pls paste the link of the threads...
Thanks You
First unlook the bootloder.
Flash the kernel needed ICS or GB (see on the developpement section)
Chose the rom desired and flash it from the sd card throught recovery.
The baseband can be flashed from flashtool
kool...thanks for replying...so if we flash a custom kernel can we still boot into stock os?
and then how to create CWM recovery? using flashtool only?
pls guide me dude...

[Q]Root and flash kernel Xperia Arc s

hi guys, i have bought a XPERIA ARC S and i would to root my phone.
I have also checked if is allowed unlock bootloader and it's ok!
So, i have the last rom 4.0.4 stock, is possibile have root with this tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320350?
so, if i want flash a kernel with root included, i must only unlock bootloader and then flash kernel?
The last question is: the rom/kernel are the same for ARC and ARC s?
Hi mate,
The rooting tool that you have linked to needs you to have CWM working before you root. So to use that method you need to unlock your bootloader and then flash a custom kernel. Then enter recovery and flash the latest image.
If you don't want to flash a different kernel, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868455. (Might cover your next question as well)
All the roms and kernels are interchangeable for the arc and the arc s, since the only difference is the clock speed. (On some rom's you might need to change your build.prop from LT15i to LT18i, but that's all. If it does have the option though, always pick the LT18i)
Hope I was able to help

1. Yep if you want. (It's not needed to flash most ROM's and will void your warranty)
2. Yeah, flash custom kernel via fastboot.
You will have to have the superuser.zip on the sd card. The enter CWM and flash it. This will give you root.
That helped me as well before. Now itd time to say thanks

Rooting Xperia S in 2.3.7 with 6.0.A.3.62

Hi guys..
Am in need of a little help here. I need to root a Xperia S running 2.3.7 (Yes, oldie) with firmware version 6.0.A.3.62. This is kind of an official purpose, so i have to be in 2.3.7. Aslo updating the firmware version is my last choice. When i searched, i couldnt find any pre rooted images for 6.0.A.3.62 firmware. Can somebody help me with a pre rooted image or any other method? I want it to be in the generic customization..
If in casei want to flash a pre rooted image of a newer firmware version like 6.0.A.3.73, can i directly flash the image via fastboot? or should i take some precaution since am upgrading from .62??
Your help is much appreciated..
You won't get much answer here as you have posted in the wrong section. Post this in Q,A

have you tried bin4ry method?
if you wanted to flash pre rooted firmware I take it your bootloader is unlocked? If so its very easy to root any room through cwm.

Thank you all for the response.. I have a small query... the doom kernel has any difference (apart from root and recovery) compared to the stock kernel?? like any tweaks or something??? because i want the phone to be exactly in a factory condition.. Please don't think that i have too many demands... .. the device is used for a testing purpose.. that's y all these mandates...
I am ready to unlock the bootloader.. so in that case... like solders33 said above.. can i just flash CWM recovery via fastboot and then istall the super user .zip via CWM?? will it work in .62??

Like what DooMLoRD has mentioned in his kernel thread, his kernel is just the stock kernel that has some ramdisk changes and support for init.d and userinit scripts (besides root and CWM).
Thanks for the reply.. One more quick question... If i want to flash a pre rooted image of any newer firmwares.. say .67 or .73 .. can i just do that with fastboot flashing?? any problems in updating like that???

You should flash the pre-rooted image of your present .62 firmware, not newer ones.

Update Arc S to latest ICS stock ROM

Hi guys!
I have an Arc S (Lt18i) stuck on Gingerbread and I would like to have the latest stock ICS version, which I think is 4.0.4.
I understand I have to use a program called flashtool.
Will I be able to flash the ROM using flashtool if my phone isn't rooted and the bootloader is locked?
And could someone point me to a link to download the ROM?
Thank you very much.

Locked bootloader can flash stock kernel, you cannot flash custom kernel. Locked bootloader does not mean cannot flash kernel.

Ok thank you very much! so I've looked and just to clarify:
I put this file in the "firmwares" folder in c:\flashtool,
press the lightning icon and choose Flashmode,
select Wipe User Data,Wipe Cache and No Final Verification Check
Will I loose all my apps? and if so, can I do it without wiping user data?

Flashing via Flashtool will always wipe data. Unless you have a nandroid backup, it's not possible to keep apps and their data.

Wrong. Flashtool does not require unlock or root to flash stock firmware/kernel or any other part of the FTF file.

The MIUI thread has a complete tutorial of how to unlock bootloader (okay you did that), but after that it explains you how to root and install CWM. What firmware are you on? From what I can see the instructions for how to root .200/.211 are a bit daft though (the author expects you to already have a custom recovery). If you're on .200 or .211, skip the rooting step and just flash one of the custom kernels with fastboot (for how to flash a kernel with fastboot, you can also use Flashtool to do this, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963961). Depending on which recovery you installed/tried to install, there are different ways of accessing it. If you used RecoverX, you need to tap the Sony logo a few times when you're rebooting. If you used a custom kernel or the 6.0.3.0 recovery for JB DooMLorD has posted, you need to press volume up when rebooting.
If we're to help you, we'd like a little more information. So what firmware are you currently using, which recovery were you trying to install?
