Update Arc S to latest ICS stock ROM - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I have an Arc S (Lt18i) stuck on Gingerbread and I would like to have the latest stock ICS version, which I think is 4.0.4.
I understand I have to use a program called flashtool.
Will I be able to flash the ROM using flashtool if my phone isn't rooted and the bootloader is locked?
And could someone point me to a link to download the ROM?
Thank you very much.

No you cant flash kernels whrn your bootloader is locked...
You must unlock & root your mobile 1st.
You can only flash firmware(ftf) files with above configuration...
Press thnx if I helped.

Locked bootloader can flash stock kernel, you cannot flash custom kernel. Locked bootloader does not mean cannot flash kernel.

Ok thank you very much! so I've looked and just to clarify:
I put this file in the "firmwares" folder in c:\flashtool,
press the lightning icon and choose Flashmode,
select Wipe User Data,Wipe Cache and No Final Verification Check
Will I loose all my apps? and if so, can I do it without wiping user data?

Flashing via Flashtool will always wipe data. Unless you have a nandroid backup, it's not possible to keep apps and their data.

Wrong. Flashtool does not require unlock or root to flash stock firmware/kernel or any other part of the FTF file.

Unlock with normal method or testpoint (drm data keept)
Get root/cwm
Find your rom and fitting kernel
Flash.
If you just go first to general selection theres a lot fully made threads about unlocking and getting CWM. (on top, the pinned ones)
Then go to dev. selection so find your rom and follow the guide to flash

Just flash a kernel & you can use CWM to flash a rom

Any help please?
actually it says

[Q] How to back up app data & settings without root and Ultimate Backup Tool?

Hi, everyone. I can't seem to find the solution for my prob, so I've to ask for ur knowledge on this.
Problem:
I'm using Xperia Arc with latest stock firmware without root. And I want to back up my app data & settings before resetting or flashing it.
Attempt:
I've tried Ultimate Backup Tool, but to no avail, just as mentioned in the Ultimate Backup Tool thread that there are known problem with Xperia Arc as one of the Sony 2011 devices.
I've looked through all the rooting methods for Xperia Arc, and I can't seem to find or perform a working root on the phone without flashing it. Naturally, Titanium Backup can't work as well.
Question:
So, what options do I have to back up the app data & settings now? And I'm looking that whether will a flash necessarily wipe the data on ur phone? Can I retain the data even after flashing the phone?
Really appreciate for ur help. Thx~ =)

You can't, it's not possible to access and backup app data while your phone is not rooted. Are you on GB or ICS?
BTW, you don't have to flash your phone to root unless you have to downgrade. In the instance for ICS .587, I only need to flash the kernel of .562, root it via adb, then flash back the .587 kernel. This should not wipe your data.

Thx a lot for ur reply. I'm on ICS .587 too. I was just afraid that flashing would wipe the data. And now this is clear.
Seems like this is the only option that I have, right? Btw, won't flashing it back to the latest firmware lose the root? Bcuz I used to have root, but I lost it when I updated my phone through official update methods. Or is that why I lost root?

Yes, flashing will lose your root, so does updating it via the official method. Flashing the entire ROM would wipe the data, but flashing the kernel does not.

Really? Then, what's the point of downgrade the firmware then upgrade again? Lol~
So, does that mean that with unlocked bootloader, I can keep root even after upgraded?

You can't root the latest firmware so you have to downgrade to root. You then upgrade by flashing the latest firmware's kernel which upgrades the firmware to the latest version and also keeps root status.
As for unlocked bootloaders, I can't comment because I have no experience with them

Yeah, when you unlock bootloader, you also remove DRM keys that connect to Sony servers. So Track ID, Playnow and other Sony services won't work anymore. You also cannot use OTA updates as it will brick your phone.

Hmm~ I'm aware of that. But from first impression, it seems like they're not that important, since apps like Playnow are not useful. The only one that I use is TrackID, which I saw Sony published it on Play Store for public download. Sounds like it's fine to lose the DRM key too. Lol.

[Q] Bootloader unlock allowed changed to No, after flashing Stock ICS.

Yesterday I tried to flash a JB room into my xperia arc S. The installation had no problems, but after restarting, the phone didn't pass from the sony logo.
So, with the flashtool I flash the stock ICS again. And the phone is working again, but, now I can not flash any other room because the bootloader is lock.
Now, the phone says: "bootloader unlock allowed: no", and before, it had: "bootloader unlock: yes".
Before, I even had clockworkmod installed and I could flash anything with it, but now... Now, my phone does have the notification drawer anymore.
Does anyone knows how can I fix this?
Thanks for any help.

I flashed( using clockworkmod ) this one first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380652, and the phone got stuck at the Sony Logo.
Then, using Flashtool, flashed this: "Lt18i_4.1.B.0.587_1254-8596_Generic_India.ftf" , then I even tried this: "LT18i_4.1.B.0.587_(1254-2184).ftf"
simlock.ta? No.
The problem now is that I can not go into clockworkmod anymore. I even had made a backup with clockworkmod , but now I can't restore it anymore.

Yes, but if the phone's bootloader is bloqued again, why install X-Parts to have clockworkmod , if I can not flash another rom?
You can still flash a ROM with X-Parts, just that it will be stock based, definitely not CM/AOKP/PAC.

In your SDCard, simply delete the files in the XZDualRecovery or rename the XZDR.prop. If you delete them, they get recreated anyway and fixes that problem you had with 101

Locked or unlocked BL isn't important with these files.
Just upload the ZIP to your SDCard and flash it in recovery, then power off your phone without rebooting and flash the stripped FTF with Flashtool and you're done.
Thank you guys!
But for those (like my self) who are not experts on this, could you please, provide a detailed (step by step) guide on how to flash it?
If I already flashed it to kitkat (not rooted), can I do it over this one?

If you already flashed 4.4.2 then you do not have root and therefore cannot flash these. You will need to flash back to an older 4.2.2 so you can root and then install recovery. Once you have recovery the steps are:
1 - upload the zip to your SDCard and flash it via recovery
2 - After flash is successful, turn off your phone without rebooting.
3 - Flash the stripped FTF file via FlashTool and boot your phone.
That's it

yes. (& personal data also, so make backup) but root is a easy job (1min) you can root phone with ''e-root'' app. btw if u plan to use custom rom , then no need to root it all custom rom/kernel is prerooted....
if not you can extract kernel & try flashing i manually..
