[Q] Should I....? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello, i've been using a tmo SGSII for a while.
I was going to change into GN when it comes out for TMO later.
but it seems i've been waiting forever for it, and i'm giving up.
I'm trying to buy a unlocked GSM version of GN.
i'm thinking of buying GN from here

Do you think it's okay for me to buy GN around this time?

plus, i heard unlocked gsm GNs' are OS locked, where you cannot upgrade the software via OTA.
is this true? or this doesn't matter? would i be able to get an OTA without any problem? or do i have to use a 3rd party program? or i can't simply do it?

Sorry, not true. Just because you're buying it from a seller in the US doesn't mean that Samsung Europe will honor your warranty. If you want a guarantee (or as close to a guarantee as you'll get with a grey market device) of having a manufacturer warranty, choose a reputable US-based importer (not a random eBay seller) that will help facilitate the warranty exchange with Samsung. Samsung Europe will (most likely) not deal with a US customer directly because the phone is not sold here.
Do you think it's okay for me to buy GN around this time?

That's your call. No one can tell you what you want or what to do. Read up and make a choice.

This is not true... Not sure what you're talking about. The entire point of buying unlocked phones is so that you can still receive the updates OTA without waiting for carriers to approve them. The Galaxy Nexus receives OTAs just fine.

i'm not talking about a warranty. i never get warranty, for anything. i take care of my electronic devices well (more like worshiping god lol. every single one of electronic devices that i ever had lived way over their life expectancy)
i'm talking about the amount of time for the phone to get to me. it should be way faster than from the overseas, correct?
also, it says i should get my money back if i return it within 7 days, and only one or two day is needed for me to figure out if there is anything wrong with the phone.
also, feedback of this seller is quite good

I got my galaxy nexus around a month ago and my only regret is not getting it sooner!!
i waited a while to buy a phone and was also considering waiting for the sgsIII but every time a phone was released a new phone was announced and i ended up just waiting and waiting haha it was an endless loop...
finally gave in and just picked up the galaxy nexus and never looked back

Getting Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile

I've been thinking about ordering the GSM Galaxy Nexus to use on T-Mobile since it doesn't look like this phone is going to be released anytime soon. I think I read that if I do this, in order to still get updates straight from Google I have to flash something? Does this mean that I'll have to root the phone once I get it?
Basically I just want to know what I need to do once I get the phone to make it work on T-Mobile.
And I was thinking about ordering from Amazon or Negri.

No you dont have to flash. Only if you get the samsung firmware one. Gsm ones get direct ota updates no worries.

How would one accidentally get the Samsung firmware one? By chance?
So if I get the correct 1 all I have to do is stick my SIM card in it and I'm good to go?

Theres a chance you'll get a non "yakju" device (yakju** version) that gets software updates slower (from Samsung). You can flash any i9250 (GSM) model to yakju just fine, so it doesn't matter which one you actually get from the seller. It doesnt require root, just unlocking the bootloader. You can re-lock after if you really want to. Once you get the drivers installed (which can be annoying), it takes about 5 min and 10 lines in the command prompt to complete manually. No hackery.
As far as buying it online, I recommend Negri if you value having a warranty. The Amazon model explicitly says "no warranty" on it. Negri will let you send the phone to them and they forward it to Samsung Europe for repairs, as Samsung won't take the phone directly from you. This is for manufacturer defects only, though. If you want extra accidental damage insurance you get that from a 3rd party here in the US.
The Negri model is only $595. The CAN one is cheaper because they get a deal on them and it comes with a US-capable charger in the box (less cost to them). Don't be worried though, you can flash it to yakju the minute you get it. I bought one and it works fantastically. Functionally, there is no difference in hardware from any other i9250 variant.
No matter where you buy it from you will always be able to just put your SIM in it and use it. Flashing to yakju isn't a necessary step to use the phone. Because you're on XDA I'm assuming you might care a bit more than the normal user though, and for that reason I recommend you flash to yakju. Agreed. Although newegg has a deal for the Galaxy Nexus $529.99... 90 day warranty. Negri and Expansys offers about a year of warranty.

Thanks for helping me flash my phone to yakju. It was really easy I also listen to him and got the Canadian version from negri. Negri also has a coupon too if you google "negri coupon"

I am on T-Mobile and ordered mine through expansys. It arrived with 4.0.1 and then prompted me about the update to 4.0.2. Also only order from expansys, the galaxy nexus has a 24 month warranty and if you have issues you just send it to expansys and they take care of the rest because this phone has to be repaired over seas for the warranty to be valid.

I ordered mine through amazon/trd trading for 563 with 18.88 overnight shipping. Its the European version I think. Anyways after I got it I rooted and installed the kl1 radio and get better reception than my s2.

Thanks for all the answers! Yeah, the only reason I don't want to root and stuff is because I still want to hold onto the 1 year warranty just incase.
I purchased my GNex from Expansys for T-Mobile (I love the phone BTW) and I asked them specifically which version they were selling and it will be the Google build and not the Samsung build. Additionally, I was told by expansys as this is a European phone it is subject to European laws and they provide a three year warranty. I do not have that in writing but I asked the guy the same question three different ways and he gave me the same answer every time....

I called Negri and they told me all their phones have the Samsung build, ugh
I've heard that customer service is terrible at Expansys though, how did it fair for you? I'm still trying to deciding whether to buy or not buy the phone, it's so much money... lol

Builds dont matter. You can change it to yakju, and if u don't want to then you really don't have a voice in complaining because it's there to change, but you just don't wanna do it.
And I don't think customer service @ Expansys is terrible... contact Corey from XDA, he is from Expansys and personally posts here.

Well I'm not complaining I'm just thinking it out loud really, sorry if I came off as whiny. I just don't want to do anything to void the warranty yet as I've read problems w/ mysteriously cracking screens and the like. How long does it take Samsung to push out the updates compared to Google?

As I said, it doesn't matter... any i9250 model can be flashed to yakju. Just get it where you can get the best price (or best price w/ warranty). Samsung will be a couple to several weeks behind, depending on which build you have. Just flash to yakju you'll be glad you did.
Also, it doesn't void the warranty to unlock the bootloader and load yakju. Its okay lol you can re-flash and return to stock if you want.

Very easy process for me, I have purchased from Negri and they were good but not great. I would buy from Expansys again in a heart beat especially if you have a clue. Ask them about the warranty on the phone and see what they say.
Omg.. I placed the order and then Google cancelled it for some reason. Now they said I have to wait 3-5 days for the funds to come back into my account and then I can try again using Amazon checkout.

I went through Negri since I was buying the extended battery from them as well, I figured it'd be easier doing everything from 1 site. Ugh, this is such a bummer

I had the same issue with Negri and Google Checkout. Use your Amazon account if you have one or just use your Google account with Expansys. Just make sure your CC company knows there will be a refund from Negri. As far as the extended battery why get what you don't need unless you end up needing it?? I'm 3 months without ever having a dead battery, I charge every night though. If you want to buy an accessory buy the desktop dock!!

Does this mean some sort of US support for the rest of us? Meaning if we had to call in Samsung regarding the GSM galaxy nexus the phone agent will finally have a script to read to us?

I highly doubt they will offer any international Nexus owners repair services...even for a fee. This has been my only consideration of selling mine and waiting for a more local option because I have no options should the worst happen.

There's a few cellphone repair companies that could fix something that goes wrong with gnex. However I agree that not having an official service center being able to look at the phone in the US is big downside.

Called iwireless.com today...and they are indeed selling the GSM Galaxy Nexus. They'll even sell them to non-customers, though they told me they only have one left right now, but they're getting more Friday.
This is the FIRST time the GSM pentaband has been sold in the USA, correct? This is huge to me, because it comes with a USA warranty. The last thing I want is to import the phone, and then Samsung won't even service it.
So do you think the iwireless version is the exact same as the world phone? Like if I buy an imported phone, will Samsung even know the difference, or will they say "sorry, yours is grey market, it can't be serviced here." Possibly by the IMEI number?

They'd need a receipt of purchase to do a warranty job. So unless you bought from iwireless I would assume the rest of us won't be covered because our phones weren't bought within the region it was intended for.

When I sent my Nexus S in for warranty repair I was never asked for a receipt (good thing, because I bought the phone used). However, the model number is probably different if the phone was imported.

I wonder if the model number is the same as Canada - i9250M?
And more importantly, are there new radios that come with the U.S. model?
Well, if the requirement for warranty service is a USA receipt...if the phone is identical to the imported phones from europe and canada, couldn't you just buy a phone from Amazon and say "Hi, here's my receipt from the company Amazon in the USA."
Can anyone confirm if the iwireless model is in anyway different?
And even ignoring warranty issues, does this mean Samsung USA will now repair an imported Galaxy Nexus? Because heck, I'd rather pay closer to $500 for some of these imported models and get zero warranty, I just want to make sure I can get it repaired if I have any issues.

Just spoke to a level 2 phone agent at Samsung Wireless US. The phones iwireless are selling are actually imported as well so they technically do not have US warranty. Any repairs or defects you might have will be done through iwireless, I'm assuming they'd have to swap it out or mail back to country of origin.
So we still have zero US support on galaxy nexus. I'm still trying to get my earpiece speaker fixed and they don't even have the part for it.

I work for this company and yes it's the same one.
I can't believe how much attention we have been getting. We are a small regional carrier and I understand we are the first here to get GSM version but I was surprised how many android sites had posted about our company selling the phone.
The phone is nice but it's getting old fast and I think it's overpriced. I will actually be sticking to my AOSP sensation...dual flash, 8mp camera, sd card slot, yum.

So do you think the iwireless version is the exact same as the world phone? Like if I buy an imported phone, will Samsung even know the difference, or will they say "sorry, yours is grey market, it can't be serviced here." Possibly by the IMEI number?

I bought mine back in January from Fry's Electronics in store. Not sure how the warrany works with them but I had a problem with the one I bought and took it back to the store where they swapped it out for another one (new in the box) after verifying that it was a manufacturing defect.
Just spoke to a level 2 phone agent at Samsung Wireless US. The phones iwireless are selling are actually imported as well so they technically do not have US warranty. Any repairs or defects you might have will be done through iwireless, I'm assuming they'd have to swap it out or mail back to country of origin.
So we still have zero US support on galaxy nexus. I'm still trying to get my earpiece speaker fixed and they don't even have the part for it.
Its a small local carrier to me so they will handle defective ones just like any US carrier. They'll swap it out for a refurb and exchange it with Samsung.

Not if they are importing the phone as posted above you. They would have to send the phone to another country for warranty repairs, unless they refurbish phones themselves. If you get a phone from them make sure you have a backup phone for the month it will be away getting repaired.

I've been looking for that Answer for about a week now.
Will I get International warranty with the GNEX if I buy it directly from Google Play Store?
I'm Brazilian, living in California and going back to Brazil next month.
I've been craving for a galaxy nexus since I saw it selling for 400 at the google play store but could not yet discover whether it`s warranty will work in Brazil or not.
I had read the whole disclaimer about the phone`s warranty both in google's and samsung's website and yet still could not find anything regarding this.
Does Anyone know if the warranty for this phone, if bought directly from google, is an worldwide warranty?

Surely they will only service it if you're still in the US. The exact same as no one in the US with a European version can get it serviced.
Is there any statement from google which clearly says that?
Because if it were like that why wouldnt they write that on their webpage?
I just cant find a reason why they wouldnt clearly state that as it would, at least, avoid many misunderstandings.

Well I'm just basing it on the usual terms of warranties. As I said, look at everyone in the US with a European Galaxy Nexus that can't directly deal with Samsung Europe.
You can always call and ask.
As it is a US only deal, it is 99% a US only warranty.

The problem is that this phone is so f* expensive in Brazil, U$1000, and even buying it there, if it comes defective I have a good chance of being Samsunged by them, as they already did it to me refusing to exchange a defective galaxy 5.

Just get a cheapo Google Play one or a Euro one if you can get a better deal. You probably won't have a warranty either way.
Well, any sort of support back in Brazil sucks anyway. Usually I don't rely on that to decide about an electronic device.
Yes, I'm Brazilian. Eventually, if you're lucky, you could find some decent support, but it will not the rule, just an isolated case.

Im from Venezuela (next to brazil) i bought mine from Amazon and i got no warranty neither from Google nor from samsung, i could always send to samsung europe, but meh, it will cost more the shipping than buying another phone lol..

It has warranty support only in the US. Trouble is, the warranty is actually the manufacturer's warranty, and Samsung's support is notoriously slow/bad. The only reason the US version is worth getting it's not all that much worth rooting the device (except maybe to overclock the processor).
Yeah, like the other guys said, it's only in the U.S. Although, if your phone breaks down while you're in Brazil, you can send it to any family or friends staying in the U.S. and have them ship it to Google or Samsung for you?

I could even do that but it's easier said than done. To send it to the US and try to get it back seems too risky taking brazilian post officers into account. And I can even get taxed again for doing that.
Is the failure margin of this phone that high? I don't plan to flash custom rooms or anything...

Well the failure rate of any phone is measurable for sure, but the odds aren't very high. Chances are you'll get the device and it'll work just fine.
Actually, my last 2 phones were dead at some point, Motorola defy and Optimus 3D.
My current atrix reboots itself sometimes but it's not something to get too worried about, at this point at least.
The thing is that all this new phones don't seem reliable at all.
If I am to buy a disposable phone again I will get mad. And unfortunately I've seen a lot of stories about failing gnexus.
Does someone knows the actual statistics about broken gnexus?
What is the most common problem with them?

I asked this question to apple and they told me that I could take any apple product into any apple store around the world and they would honor the warranty. I just need to provide proof of purchase.
Many laptop providers also provide international warranties.
What I would say to the OP, buy a phone that you know can be serviced in Brazil even if for a fee. For 400 its a steal. If you like, buy two and sell one when you get there at a profit and save the profit for the cost of having to repair the phone if it ever comes to that

My brother exchanged his ipod touch, bought in Italy, more than 4 times in Brazil.
If I knew Samsung's warranty were like theirs I would buy the phone with my eyes closed.

Apple doesn't cover International iPhones, only Brazilian ones, don't get fooled.
AND, the same as the others, the warranty is a lottery. Already had a lot of friends facing problems with Apple's Warranty in Brazil.
Well, is it reliable to buy the gnex from amazon?
Will I get the pentaband version anyway? (Is there another? Or is it just a rumor?)
About the software version, should I be worried about that?

I've only just got my GNex like two days ago so I don't know how high the failure rate is but I doubt that there's anything that can't be fixed through browsing XDA except hardware failures. I say, go with the Play Store. You should be fine. I think the Amazon one is pentaband too.
Well, I end up buying the SA version of the Nexus at Amazon. I'm very pleased.

Samsung blocking imei's by what method?

If the rumor is true and Samsung is truly going to block imei's after September 30th of phones not replaced under the recall how would they go about doing this? I would assume by silent OTA. Would running twrp and custom ROM be able to stop this from happening? Before anyone assumes I'm not replacing device by choice this is not true. My eBay seller is unwilling to exchange my device and Samsung is unwilling to help since it was bought on eBay and device is international and I'm in the usa. So I'm in a bad spot and refuse to have a$900 paper weight. I'm looking into other options with eBay on somehow getting my money back but it looks to be a long shot.

How did you pay? With PayPal? Cause in pretty sure they can get the refund done with their return policy for customers if you go through them.

I don't think it involves an ota, the block list is sent to the carriers. I think it was intended for stolen phones.
Working with eBay is your best bet, from the sounds of it. Best of luck.

IMEIs can be blocked through networks not by OTA or software, it's literally a block from using any mobile network by the network worldwide.
Yes I did use PayPal and a credit card that is setup through them. I am within the 30 day return window. I did read that the return is only valid through a defective product or item received not as described. I would consider the recall a defect but we willing have to see if they agree. What is the likelihood they would send all these imei's blocks to every carrier in the usa on an international phone? I would that would be highly unlikely. I would say the usa versions imei's I could see being blocked but an international devices imei? What do you think?

rumors are rumors.....unless samsung release a statement stating that they are going to ban the IMEI everything is smoke and daggers.........exchange can always be done at the sammy regional store/office where they device was first purchased (in this case...where ebay seller got the phones from initially)
while the F version is called the "international" version....each region has their own variation of the F model......
buying from ebay is like buying your neighbor's car......once purchase in good faith......your neighbour is not responsible for any maintenance thereafter.....

IMEIs are blocked worldwide when they are blocked. It's a worldwide system for stopping device usage after phone theft.

I think a lot of the ebay seller, ebay themselves, and PayPal issues and problems regarding refunds and exchanges. Is mainly due to the fact that the recalls were new and no one really had any idea of how to go about it and were just pushing blame.
If you wait a little bit for the smoke to Settle and there is a little more clarity on what is going on, in regards to the recalls and procedures.
Maybe some of these entities may reverse or take a different stand on their earlier decisions if you revisit them, after they get a better understanding of what is going on and how their earlier decision just left their consumers. Screwed. Especially ebay and PayPal who are suppose to protect the consumers with buyers protection.

My seller (never-msrp) is just giving me the run around. I keep messaging him/her/them but their telling me their still waiting on what Samsung is going to do and or tell them how to act when being asked about returns.
I don't want to return my device. My device works beautifully. But now this $hit Samsung might deactivate non exchanged possibly dangerous phones has got me worried and Ihave no idea what to do...

recalls work different way.....since the device it not defective......so i don't think its a matter of pushing blame.......
buyer protection is only useful when you haven't got the item or it isn't what is described.........the devices wasn't defective when you received it......it was in working order.......at this point....its mostly out of ebay's hands since it came as advertised......
paypal will probably look at it....and say.....the transaction was made in good faith between you and the seller......(because the product came as advertised...recall does not fall into "defective" categories).........
the ebay seller depending on who it is....may help you with the exchange.....each seller can have their own terms and condition though.......i checked a couple of listing....and most of them say that you have a 12 month manufacturing warranty.....(i think the key word is manufacture....which means its samsung).......so its more like if the seller is willing to help....but most likely you will have to deal with samsung yourself......
It will be a good move though... Considering many airlines are banning it on flight, hopefully this will encourage them to lift the ban...

i don't think they will go to that extreme.....and honestly....unless samsung release a statement about IMEI block...i will take it as a grain of salt.......remember......its only someone in reddit that is talking about it.......with no proof that except for what he wrote about the phone call.......but samsung france haven't release any statement to that fact.....
if you know where your phone was first purchased......then you can call the samsung number for that region and see what you can do......

Yes will do for sure. Well it seems like never-msrp isn't going to be of any help here as they keep giving me the same answers to my many different questions, so it seems like I'll be contacting Samsung Vietnam tomorrow to see what I can do.

The Aussie supplied phones are made in Vietnam and are all being recalled.. Dunno if they are different to the Vietnamese market models though hardware wise.
