If the rumor is true and Samsung is truly going to block imei's after September 30th of phones not replaced under the recall how would they go about doing this? I would assume by silent OTA. Would running twrp and custom ROM be able to stop this from happening? Before anyone assumes I'm not replacing device by choice this is not true. My eBay seller is unwilling to exchange my device and Samsung is unwilling to help since it was bought on eBay and device is international and I'm in the usa. So I'm in a bad spot and refuse to have a$900 paper weight. I'm looking into other options with eBay on somehow getting my money back but it looks to be a long shot.

How did you pay? With PayPal? Cause in pretty sure they can get the refund done with their return policy for customers if you go through them.

I don't think it involves an ota, the block list is sent to the carriers. I think it was intended for stolen phones.

IMEIs can be blocked through networks not by OTA or software, it's literally a block from using any mobile network by the network worldwide.
Yes I did use PayPal and a credit card that is setup through them. I am within the 30 day return window. I did read that the return is only valid through a defective product or item received not as described. I would consider the recall a defect but we willing have to see if they agree. What is the likelihood they would send all these imei's blocks to every carrier in the usa on an international phone? I would that would be highly unlikely. I would say the usa versions imei's I could see being blocked but an international devices imei? What do you think?

rumors are rumors.....unless samsung release a statement stating that they are going to ban the IMEI everything is smoke and daggers.........exchange can always be done at the sammy regional store/office where they device was first purchased (in this case...where ebay seller got the phones from initially)
while the F version is called the "international" version....each region has their own variation of the F model......
buying from ebay is like buying your neighbor's car......once purchase in good faith......your neighbour is not responsible for any maintenance thereafter.....

IMEIs are blocked worldwide when they are blocked. It's a worldwide system for stopping device usage after phone theft.

I think a lot of the ebay seller, ebay themselves, and PayPal issues and problems regarding refunds and exchanges. Is mainly due to the fact that the recalls were new and no one really had any idea of how to go about it and were just pushing blame.
If you wait a little bit for the smoke to Settle and there is a little more clarity on what is going on, in regards to the recalls and procedures.
Maybe some of these entities may reverse or take a different stand on their earlier decisions if you revisit them, after they get a better understanding of what is going on and how their earlier decision just left their consumers. Screwed. Especially ebay and PayPal who are suppose to protect the consumers with buyers protection.

My seller (never-msrp) is just giving me the run around. I keep messaging him/her/them but their telling me their still waiting on what Samsung is going to do and or tell them how to act when being asked about returns.
I don't want to return my device. My device works beautifully. But now this $hit Samsung might deactivate non exchanged possibly dangerous phones has got me worried and Ihave no idea what to do...

recalls work different way.....since the device it not defective......so i don't think its a matter of pushing blame.......
buyer protection is only useful when you haven't got the item or it isn't what is described.........the devices wasn't defective when you received it......it was in working order.......at this point....its mostly out of ebay's hands since it came as advertised......
paypal will probably look at it....and say.....the transaction was made in good faith between you and the seller......(because the product came as advertised...recall does not fall into "defective" categories).........
the ebay seller depending on who it is....may help you with the exchange.....each seller can have their own terms and condition though.......i checked a couple of listing....and most of them say that you have a 12 month manufacturing warranty.....(i think the key word is manufacture....which means its samsung).......so its more like if the seller is willing to help....but most likely you will have to deal with samsung yourself......
It will be a good move though... Considering many airlines are banning it on flight, hopefully this will encourage them to lift the ban...

i don't think they will go to that extreme.....and honestly....unless samsung release a statement about IMEI block...i will take it as a grain of salt.......remember......its only someone in reddit that is talking about it.......with no proof that except for what he wrote about the phone call.......but samsung france haven't release any statement to that fact.....
if you know where your phone was first purchased......then you can call the samsung number for that region and see what you can do......

The Aussie supplied phones are made in Vietnam and are all being recalled.. Dunno if they are different to the Vietnamese market models though hardware wise.

The hardware keys are broken and I want to get a replacement device but they always bicker that I got the phone third party and I really don't understand why that matters at all.
I'm thinking they will just refer you to Samsung. Although they are fairly quick at getting you a replacement.
Go direct through Samsung instead. And the reason they are picky is the manufacturer requires the information for warranty.

They will honor it, I have done it multiple times. As long as you don't say it was bought 3rd party, they don't ask.

Are you talking about Tmobile or samsung? Because I returned my vibrant that was purchased from a third party and I ended up having to pay full retail for the replacement because they "never got the device"

Your best bet to exchange with t-mobile is through customer care. Tell them you changed your number because thar causes it to shows wrong warranty info that way. Tech is smarter and they'll make sure what number used the inside first.
Theoretically if your similar was the first active similar t-mobile can replace.

I just did this myself... Got my phone brand new in sealed box off Ebay. Just did a warranty exchange with T-mobile (and I got lucky because they were out of stock and sent me a BRAND NEW IN BOX March 20, 2012 phone!!!).
So yea, go through T-mobile. Don't ask for a warranty exchange, call and go through tech support and tell them your phone's buttons are not working properly. Do the steps with them and then they willl eventually get to the part in the script about the warranty exchange.
They didn't ask me any questions at all about where I bought my phone. I was worried also but I ended up finding a lot of people that did this successfully.

This, except his wordchoices are questionable lol. Warranty doesn't seem to transfer from one number to another unless it's within the same family line. However that is usually not the case. There are times when it does transfer over. Not sure why... Stupid system.
The reps can only see if your warranty is valid, if not they need permission from a supervisor to bypass any authorization. So be nice to your rep and they'll help you out. You can tell them i just bought it so and do date, i even have the box but can't find my receipt should i send you the picture of the box? reps usually just say no you don't have to and see what they can do. Ymmv

Sealed off ebay is fine. As long as your number is the first phone to activate it, warranty should be valid for a year.

I just sent my phone to Samsung earlier today. I brought my phone off ebay and the screen stopped working (the phone turns works, but the screen wasn't working at all, and it showed a greenish color instead of what's suppose to be on the screen). I talked to their online CS Reps and after we couldn't fix it she filed the service claim for me AND they paid for 2nd day air (which they don't usually do). So, just go with Samsung support if you have doubts.
Ironically, my phone broke the morning after the Skyrockets ICS was leaked, and I didn't even get to flash it after the Devs here ported it =(
I have gotten multiple warranty replacements from tmobile for phones I purchased used.

Yeah you have to ship your phone and wait for it to come back.
That is the advantage of going through T-mobile....you get your new phone first before sending in your old one.

I told them the truth, because something really did happen to my screen.. If it has something to do with bricking your phone from flashing, just say an OTA or Kies update happened and your phone didn't come on... otherwise just tell the truth, unless it voids your warrenty.

Surely they will only service it if you're still in the US. The exact same as no one in the US with a European version can get it serviced.

Well I'm just basing it on the usual terms of warranties. As I said, look at everyone in the US with a European Galaxy Nexus that can't directly deal with Samsung Europe.
You can always call and ask.
As it is a US only deal, it is 99% a US only warranty.

Just get a cheapo Google Play one or a Euro one if you can get a better deal. You probably won't have a warranty either way.
Well, any sort of support back in Brazil sucks anyway. Usually I don't rely on that to decide about an electronic device.
Yes, I'm Brazilian. Eventually, if you're lucky, you could find some decent support, but it will not the rule, just an isolated case.

It has warranty support only in the US. Trouble is, the warranty is actually the manufacturer's warranty, and Samsung's support is notoriously slow/bad. The only reason the US version is worth getting it's not all that much worth rooting the device (except maybe to overclock the processor).

I could even do that but it's easier said than done. To send it to the US and try to get it back seems too risky taking brazilian post officers into account. And I can even get taxed again for doing that.

Well the failure rate of any phone is measurable for sure, but the odds aren't very high. Chances are you'll get the device and it'll work just fine.
Actually, my last 2 phones were dead at some point, Motorola defy and Optimus 3D.
My current atrix reboots itself sometimes but it's not something to get too worried about, at this point at least.
The thing is that all this new phones don't seem reliable at all.
If I am to buy a disposable phone again I will get mad. And unfortunately I've seen a lot of stories about failing gnexus.
Does someone knows the actual statistics about broken gnexus?
What is the most common problem with them?

I asked this question to apple and they told me that I could take any apple product into any apple store around the world and they would honor the warranty. I just need to provide proof of purchase.
Many laptop providers also provide international warranties.
What I would say to the OP, buy a phone that you know can be serviced in Brazil even if for a fee. For 400 its a steal. If you like, buy two and sell one when you get there at a profit and save the profit for the cost of having to repair the phone if it ever comes to that

My brother exchanged his ipod touch, bought in Italy, more than 4 times in Brazil.

Apple doesn't cover International iPhones, only Brazilian ones, don't get fooled.
AND, the same as the others, the warranty is a lottery. Already had a lot of friends facing problems with Apple's Warranty in Brazil.

I've only just got my GNex like two days ago so I don't know how high the failure rate is but I doubt that there's anything that can't be fixed through browsing XDA except hardware failures. I say, go with the Play Store. You should be fine. I think the Amazon one is pentaband too.

It's been my experience with other carriers that they will honor the warranty regardless of the owner as long as the device is not reported stolen.
Verizon will not unless I can come up with the order number which all I ha e to do is contact the seller and ask for it, I'm going to instead open a dispute with the seller due to the fact that he sold me a faulty device

Verizon will not unless I can come up with the order number which all I ha e to do is contact the seller and ask for it, I'm going to instead open a dispute with the seller due to the fact that he sold me a faulty device

Good luck with your endeavor. As Verizon won't honor the warranty without that information, I hope you can get it from the seller. Needless to say I think it should be on the seller and not Verizon's warranty to have to resolve your issue, unfortunately the world doesn't usually work as it should. Either way, I hope your issue gets solved. Although, if it's just the charging board it shouldn't be so hard to get it fixed yourself.

Just having a rough day at work
It should get fixed per the seller, his ad in eBay stated it was in perfect condition and perfect working order which it wasn't when I received it but I blew it off because it wasn't that bad cosmetic damage
Easily disputed and I'm sure I'll win
But taking it to Verizon was a simpler method

Ok, so due to new IMEI policy by t-mobile, this galaxy s4 I bought on craigslist brand new worked perfectly for 2 weeks and then the guy reported it stolen and got a new one (insurance fraud.) I'm having the man prosecuted, but that is largely for revenge purposes. Me getting my money back is slim chance. What should I do with the phone to make the most money to buy a new one? Can I sim unlock it and sell it for use on other carriers? Or are imei blocked on all? Can I break it down and sell parts? Do people buy those? haha. I'm just looking to make the best of a ****ty situation, help appreciated Thanks in advance

I think best is try to get it unlocked and sell it overseas.
Once AT&T and T-Mobile merge their blacklist it probably won't work on any US GSM carrier.
There is really no protection now for the second hand buyer when it comes to GSM phones. The original owner will most likely file a claim for the phone as being lost/stolen so they can profit and the buyer will always get boned in the end.
I say if you do buy a used phone, at least buy it on eBay. That way there is at least some accountability and the original owner would think twice before reporting the phone stolen/lost.

He is saying the future you should buy a used phone on eBay since you will get eBay and PayPal buyer protections.
If you are selling a phone with a bad IMEI you really should have a ton of documentation to support how you obtained the device. That means all the paperwork from the court about the prosecution you are involved in.
And this isn't a new policy by T Mobile. This is a long standing policy to black list phones with IMEI's that are reported stolen.
You also need to be careful when talking about how to sell and profit from a phone with a bad IMEI on XDA. It's a touchy subject here.

I purchased the S3 last year on eBay. The seller waited until after the 60 days were up (to be able to dispute on paypal) to report the phone stolen/lost. eBay was also of no help. So becareful!

But at least you have the record of the sale right? Couldn't you have gone to the T-Mobile store or called up CS and tell them you have proof that that you purchased the phone on eBay? Wouldn't T-Mobile help unblock it in your situation since you have proof with the seller information? You could have gone a few steps further and maybe get the police involved since you have nothing to worry about, you have proof of the transaction.
People like the ones you guys describe deserve to have both kneecaps broken.
Kind of makes me wonder about mine....I bought mine on CL. It was NIB. The dude bought it from Best Buy and brought it out to me. I took it home, popped my SIM in and Voila...Wonder if it would even be possible on mine since I don't think it was ever turned on on his.

Yeah I got **** on. There are terrible people out there.
For people buying phones on Craigslist either for T mobile or AT&T ask the seller to meet you at a store and advise a sales person to notate their account that they are selling the phone. If seller is legit they will gladly go to the store with you.
That's what I did when I sold my S3 and Nexus 4. The sales person notated my account in front of buyer so that I can not report it for insurance fraud...

That's what I did when I traded my Note 2 for the S4. Haven't had any issues to date.

Nothing about how to change imei's, regardless of you might use that ability for honest purposes, should ever be discussed on XDA at any time for any reason.
Any discussion about changing imei's is a big no-no on XDA. Its also illegal in most places in the world to mess with an imei, much like messing with the vin number on a car, no matter if you have a legitimate need to fix an old broken phone or not.
9 out of 10 people who will want to change an imei will want to do so for less than legal reasons. (Bought stolen phone. Stole phone. Want to sell a stolen phone, etc) XDA will not be a party to the distribution of that information as a result. So please do not discuss it here.

they are not merging. Prolly never will either. Fcc shut that down awhile ago. It's metro PCs who just recently merged with T-Mobile.
But I do believe att and T-Mobile share a blacklist. Think this exact situation happened to a person on the s3 forums. Said they couldn't use it on att either.
But OP. Should be able to unlock and sell over seas. Try eBay. If no buyers then part it out. Screen and digitizer as one is a good 200 if not more.

Just change out the IMEI number so it is not blacklisted. It is not illegal in the United States, and if any moron tells you it is ask him for the link to the law. You will not find one. I got mine fixed on ebay from a company called kingpin unlockers. It cost me 60 dollars and they did it remotely in less than 30 minutes. Remotely, yes i did not have to send my phone in anywhere. Just go to ebay and copy and paste the following text in the search box:
Bad IMEI ESN repair service Samsung T-MOBILE Galaxy S4 S 4 IV M919 Blacklisted
They do both att and tmobile and also do note 2 and s3 imei changes remotely.

Just take a look at the imei cloning laws before you talk about things you have no idea about. The only people that can legally change the IMEI is the OEM.

I ordered a tablet and a phone from Negri in the past and everything worked just fine. They are definitely a legitimate business. That does not mean that one will never have any issues with them but that's true for any retailer.

Not an isolated issue.
definitely selling used as new.
People received phones that were rooted and knox tripped and all kinds of other fun things.
Phones with IMEIs that were id'd being from stolen phones and were banned from carrier networks, etc, etc, etc
All open boxes, all missing something.
There is no way I would buy anything at any price from them.
Count yourself lucky.

I've purchased from Negri before and got my SM-601 from them last week. It was "LTA" which means Latin America and had a Trinidad CSC; just like the N-8000 I bought from them last year. Both were shrink-wrapped as they left the Samsung factory. The issues you're quoting are specific to "unlocked" versions of U.S. carrier versions of the N3. There's no such thing as "unlocked" carrier versions of U.S. phones. Samsung sells no unlocked devices in the U.S. directly (except the GPe and developer edition phones) so those phones Negri was selling had to have come to them through a secondary source and had to have been opened and initialized to unlock them. I'm guessing it was a secondary source that screwed Negri who, perhaps inadvertently, ended up screwing their customers. I'd personally never buy a U.S. carrier phone from a non-carrier affiliated third party reseller because the origin of the phone would always be questionable. I didn't follow the issues you're referencing that closely but the few I read about were taken care of by Negri through exchanges or refunds. So I agree that some folks had problems with Negri but based on my past experience I ordered from them anyway and got what I expected. So I'd recommend them for gray market devices but wouldn't recommend them (or anyone else) for carrier-specific "unlocked" U.S. phones. Amazon check-out is a payment option so that and a credit card should offer more than enough protection in case anyone does have a negative experience.
I'm not defending the issues people had with Negri and the N3 but based on the positive experiences I and others have had doesn't mean they deserve to be lynched either. As with anything bought on line - caveat emptor.

It's good that you didn't have issues.
But if you google them, the N3 thread isn't the only place that mentions these same issues, basically selling used as new. You are incorrect about the boxes needing to be open. These are details that you would have to know the thread well to know. He sent out the phones locked and emailed the unlock codes and they were still open box'd, rooted, knox tripped, stolen, etc.
Does it really matter that he blames his suppliers? Would that make you feel better if you spent $700+ on a phone and it was stolen, used, and warranty voided?
He did get his behind handed to him in that thread and had to replace some phones.
Google is your friend here. I cancelled my order because he failed to deliver on any of his promises and to this day I don't think I would have received my phone from Negri. His postings in those threads were also pretty obnoxious and he pissed off a ton of folks not just me.
You can't defend sending out phones that are listed as stolen, rooted, or warranty voided because of Knox. There's just no way to defend that.

Of course there is. If Negri (or anyone else) is selling thousands of devices a month they can't be expected to individually inspect every device they sell. They bought the phones in question from a third party assuming they were "A" stock. Clearly they weren't and cost Negri a lot of money and face in the process. You're assuming Negri was a conspirator and knowingly sent out bad merchandise. I'm assuming they were supplied with some questionable inventory from a third party supplier and were as screwed as the people that received the affected phones.
Again, I'm not defending Negri but its not fair to harpoon any business based on a less than a dozen reported issues out of thousands of customers a month served. Now that its come to light, if it happens again, I'd agree with your "no defense" claim.

This isn't a one time complaint as I stated many times above.
Anyhow doesn't matter really does it?
You would do business with them again, me and a lot of other people wouldn't. I stated why I wouldn't. So the OP has his answer.
I googled them beforehand and saw the bad reviews and statements that they were selling crap as new in the recent past. I went on what some folks had said about how they didn't have any problems with them and placed my order anyhow. The rest is a matter of public record.
Just one last observation, if someone(vendor) is way below everybody else, as he was with the N3, be suspicious
