Finally rooted my nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Now what? I used the toolbox which makes rooting and flashing way more useful then what I was used to with my fascinate.
I'm not sure what to do now. I'd like some feedback about which roms you guys are the best.
Like many of you I've been having issues with my radio, no data network, poor signal etc.
Is it worth flashing a new radio? Would it make much difference or is it not worth it? I'd hate to go so far that I can't get back to stock when updates become available.
Any feedback would be much appreciated.

as long as you don't brick your phone, you can always go back to stock. There's no difference between going kinda far from stock and all the way from stock. Its just as easy to go back.

Definitely try the 4.0.4 radios.
And what the guy above said...
Returning to stock is always the same.
Flash a few images and relock = stock.

I'm currently using AOKP and I've found it to work for me. Radio-wise, I have no clue but everything works just as it should. I doubt I'll see a real world benefit in having a different radio.

Well, definitely do NOT flash CM9 first. Because once you've tried CM9 all the other roms will just be a disappointment. ;-)
But seriously, just try a few roms. There are some really good ones. I prefer CM9 (bugless, fast, and friendly for your battery), but AOKP is also very popular (feature-rich but some more bugs I believe). It's always easy to make a nandroid backup and restore it whenever you want.

Thanks all. After bricking my fascinate twice I became a little gun shy when it comes to mods. The tool box makes it so simple though, I couldn't resist. I'm trying cm9 as soon as I get home

I actually just rooted yesterday to combat my extremely poor signal here in Chicago on T-Mobile. My problem now is I have zero service on nearly every radio now. Tried them all waited 10 mins and rebooted and no signal bars. On 2 of them I can get bars but no service. I have upload arrows absolutely no download arrows. And I'm actually trying to load the market or xda and it just times out.
Edit: Sorry for the thread hijack buddy. Found my exact issue here.

Why is anybody here on a stock rom?

Just asking because I see no advantage, maybe I am missing something. I feel like some don't flash because they are afraid of bricking there phone. While I guess technically you can brick your phone I assume we all have sprint. They will replace your phone for free or at most you pay 35 dollars. Do not be afraid greatness. Once you flash and theme your phone you will never look back. Touchwiz is a -5 on a scale of 1 to 10 compared to ics.
This phone stock is ugly and Samsung has horrible design taste. When you see this phone on display it looks retarded. Worst wallpapers ever people don't even know this phone is a good phone. I see people playing with a photon more. If were not for rooms and themes I would of sold this phone. Just look at the stock dialer its horrible.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
So you are judging it by the wallpaper? You don't have to use touch wiz if you aren't rooted. There are plenty of launchers like go launcher, launcher pro, adw. Some ppl use the phone just for that reason they don't care about all the extra stuff. And some sprint reps who are smart and know that your device is rooted they won't touch it. There have been plenty of ppl here with they problem

I ran stock for a while. Personally, it doesn't matter to me how the launcher looks. It just has to be very functional with everything I use often easy to get to. I can do that with touchwiz. I flashed Calkulins ROM because I could do that better.
On my Epic mobile phone.
I'm on stock because I've never rooted before and I'm waiting for ICS

So when ics comes you will root or just upgrade the from Samsung. And to me rooting is the hardest part flashing rooms and themes is super easy.
I can understand why its confusing kinda. But once rooted everything else is just booting into recovery and installing a zip.

I was running the stock rom with root for a while. There really aren't that many advantages to a custom rom. Samsung did a great job with TouchWiz. I mean I prefer ADW, but TouchWiz adds a lot of functionality to stock Android. I really didn't have a reason to switch. Then I got bored and started flashing custom roms. If I wasn't a flash-addict, I would have stayed. TW isn't as bad as everyone says it is.
I went back to stock because after rooting and flashing Roms I found that I clocked out on the rest of the world reading xda all the time in anticipation for new updates. "woke up" 2 months later and didn't know where the time went lol

No I'm not judging by wallpaper I'm saying stock and on display it doesn't look appealing. Part of it is the wallpaper Samsung has on there stock. I can see why somebody who knows nothing about phones will overlook this.
I don't understand how you can't swap out your phone for the same phone. You are a customer and the phone is not even a year old. Sprint will replace your phone if you don't take no for answer. Your paying sprint x amount of dollars a month. Sometimes I replace a phone just because I drop it and it has a tiny scratch. At the most they make me pay 35 dollars which you can have refunded if you call account services. If your in Miami and you can't replace a phone please pm me I will help you for free.
Sprint works for you and unless they like losing customers I don't think a little phone replacement will come between them.

Yeah, people play with the Photon more in the store because Moto Blur is so beautiful, lol.

Stocl Rom here...no need to flash and have issues with roms not working properly...yes...80% of all users who are rooted and have flashed are posting questions or problems with these custom roms...I would rather not deal with that crap just for a pretty launcher, icons etc...Ill wail for ICS.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
My phone has yet to be rooted. I'm looking and waiting for that break out rom that's either a ICS or the official ICS update. I've root many phone but right now I don't see any real reason to root. The last phone I had was the e3d and I rooted that because it had so many roms. Every Tom on the GS2 pretty much look all the same IMO which is a stock looking rom. I need variety.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Flash your phone and find out lol to be honest because stock sucks (and not talking about tw) im saying hiccups and firmware for sure. And if samsung is going to release the new versions to the devs and not to sprint customers then the only way to take advantage is to root and do ourselves
I'm on stock..
I'm in a rooted and debloated stock ROM. Why? Because it's perfect. It's not like the EVO 4G days where you had to flash a custom ROM to get the most out of your phone, the stock ROM on this thing just screams!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Stock and rooted. I would never put a custom rom. I used to always try them out on my og epic and they always had some sort of bug. EK02 has been good to me and I actually like Touchwiz. And if I get bored of it I can just switch to the stock Android launcher or download a new one from the market.... To each his own if you like custom roms good for you however don't try to knock us that like stock rom.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I ran a stock Rom for a while with root for a while with mine. I just recently (3 days) put a Rom on my phone, mainly did it so i can tether, and a few other things. I mainly play with kernels personally.
But like metalhead stated, this phone is awesome out of the box. And Im in complete agreement about the evo statement, though it was a great phone you had to change everything to really make it perform.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I test my own modifications on my phone, and sometimes leave them.. but I despise themeing and I always use touchwiz...
any modifications done to my phone are purely functional..
Yeah, I "played" around with the photon for a few minutes and the only thing that really stood out to me was...Holy S&%$ this thing is laggy ,laughed at the EVO3D,looked at the IP4S..couldn't find the screen So the GS2 was a no brainer. Touchwiz isn't bad...but that's my opinion. Everyone has different tastes. The phone is fast the screen is big the camera is good so I'm still holding off on rooting for now as I really don't see any need to..for me anyways.

Should I root?

I have had a epic and a nexus s 4g and I rooted both of them and loved it. I rooted for the main reason to help with making the phone faster due to them just having a single core. Using the galaxy nexus it seems to be very fast stock. Will I see a big difference rooting this phone and over clocking it and running roms or is just as smooth as it being stock. I do not use wifi tether and themes really don't matter to me. All I care about is speed and stability. If rooting makes this beast even faster please let me know and recommended what you feel would be the best set up for me to use.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've always rooted my devices and ran custom firmware (Xperia x10, Captivate, Xperia Arc, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Ray, Nexus S)
But with the Galaxy Nexus...ah I am just not feeling it. I am going to wait I think until it gets old enough that google is not giving it the latest version of Android...and by that time I might not even have it because I plan on just paying the early upgrade fee and getting the latest Nexus always, then selling my current device to cover the cost anyways so...I don't know. But I am personally happy with it as is for the time being.
You've rooted before so you know what it's like. I like having complete control and the ability to have access to system apps as well as flash custom kernels and ROM's. So if you want speed and stability then yes root because ROM kernel combos will give you that. But I'm sure you're aware of this already. My phone is much faster with better battery life than stock. AOKP ms3 and faux123's newest kernel has given me what I look for. AOKP's customizations make the phone my own which is what I want besides the speed and stability.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I didn't root for a while but now am happy I did, I dont really notice speed increases but the customability is much better, I have a menu button always visible better lock screen with access to SMS, Widget for wireless AP and silent in my Notification bar. There is definitely benefits!
I never even had a smartphone till I got the nexus. I was so nervous about rooting it. Thought for sure I would brick it. But I realized what is the point of having a developers phone and not seeing what developers can do with it? Might as well have gotten a razr or something that would have ics in a short time. I read, and read some more, found a toolkit that also had a video and rooted my nexus. Best decision I ever made. The development for this phone is insane. I still get nervous when I flash any new rom, theme, animation mod, softkey, or whatever, but that keeps me on my toes so I don't make any mistakes. Stock was nice, but why not have stock on steroids? Battery life improvement is reason alone to root. So I guess I wood say read, learn and root.

Finally Got This Phone

I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.
Thanks and it awesome to be a part of the S2 community. WOW.

Stoked to be here though.
Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.

Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

Reverted back to 4.0.2 from 4.0.4

Not sure how many others have done this, but I had enough of 4.0.4
The problems I saw were (mostly radio related):
The lock screen was very laggy when unlocking the phone (> 1 sec)
The signal would flat out die before it cut over to edge in my basement
I would often see that the connection would die during sleep (powering on the phone and see it suddenly perk up)
A few occasions where answering the phone turned my screen black and dropped the call
Radio issues where, after multiple changes between edge/3g/hspa, I would only pull 1mbps down on hspa. A reboot ticked it back up to 5mbps.
Far worse data speeds in my house. Upstairs I could get 2mbps on 4.0.2 with XXKK6, with 4.0.4 on XXLA2 I was getting 0.6mbps at best.
Mind you, I've both applied the update via Clockwork Mod, and when that was having trouble reflashed the entire phone with the Google factory image.
So, last night I reflashed the 4.0.2 factory image instead. My computer was nice enough to hard lock on me in the middle of it, so I had to apply it twice, but I'm back on 4.0.2 and things are good now. I put Clockwork Mod back on as well to prevent an OTA from loading.
EDIT: Wow, 4 1-start votes already? Who would have thought that saying I ran into problems with 4.0.4 was the equivalent of personally insulting people?
Sound like you need to run BAMF

Did you try a ugla4 or uglc2 radio and the smart reflex edit?

I flashed from 4.0.2 yakjuxw to 4.0.4 yakju and i actually experience better radio reception, for the first time i get a low 3g reception in my house from time to time, before i only had a medium strong edge reception.

Thanks for the useless comment, because clearly I must be struggling with the fine motor function involved with sliding the lock screen slider to the right. Or, maybe it's the intricate knowledge involved with not changing any of the OS's radio settings and allowing it to try to manage itself.

I didn't because there were issues beyond radio problems, namely the sluggishness on unlocking it and the mysterious behavior that I saw answering calls a few times. I might get bored one weekend and try reflashing with one of those radios instead.
I've done the radio reflash song and dance before on 4.0.2 because of the bug that I both mentioned here and logged on Google:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488097
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25316
Unfortunately, despite providing data, Google has totally ignored the issue. Ultimately I just decided to stick with XXKK6 and let it do its own switching.

My reception on calls has been fine, but the overall bugginess of the radio, particularly with data speeds, has been untenable.
So far my phone has been working much better with 4.0.2. Again, if I decide to flash 4.0.4 again and mess with the radio I'll update the thread.

Radios are not linked to version #'s like in the past. The reason they are labeled that way now is because it just so happens to relate to their corresponding release timing.

But in a matter of a few hours I have managed to figure out (with a bit of help just for the unrooting part) I unrooted my phone and was back on stock sprint JB for a short time and compared to the custom codename android, it sucked!!! I wanted to let you guys know even though you think I am a biotch, I learned a lot from you here and a few others.
