Why is anybody here on a stock rom? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just asking because I see no advantage, maybe I am missing something. I feel like some don't flash because they are afraid of bricking there phone. While I guess technically you can brick your phone I assume we all have sprint. They will replace your phone for free or at most you pay 35 dollars. Do not be afraid greatness. Once you flash and theme your phone you will never look back. Touchwiz is a -5 on a scale of 1 to 10 compared to ics.
This phone stock is ugly and Samsung has horrible design taste. When you see this phone on display it looks retarded. Worst wallpapers ever people don't even know this phone is a good phone. I see people playing with a photon more. If were not for rooms and themes I would of sold this phone. Just look at the stock dialer its horrible.

So you are judging it by the wallpaper? You don't have to use touch wiz if you aren't rooted. There are plenty of launchers like go launcher, launcher pro, adw. Some ppl use the phone just for that reason they don't care about all the extra stuff. And some sprint reps who are smart and know that your device is rooted they won't touch it. There have been plenty of ppl here with they problem

I ran stock for a while. Personally, it doesn't matter to me how the launcher looks. It just has to be very functional with everything I use often easy to get to. I can do that with touchwiz. I flashed Calkulins ROM because I could do that better.
On my Epic mobile phone.

I'm on stock because I've never rooted before and I'm waiting for ICS

So when ics comes you will root or just upgrade the from Samsung. And to me rooting is the hardest part flashing rooms and themes is super easy.
I can understand why its confusing kinda. But once rooted everything else is just booting into recovery and installing a zip.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

I was running the stock rom with root for a while. There really aren't that many advantages to a custom rom. Samsung did a great job with TouchWiz. I mean I prefer ADW, but TouchWiz adds a lot of functionality to stock Android. I really didn't have a reason to switch. Then I got bored and started flashing custom roms. If I wasn't a flash-addict, I would have stayed. TW isn't as bad as everyone says it is.

I went back to stock because after rooting and flashing Roms I found that I clocked out on the rest of the world reading xda all the time in anticipation for new updates. "woke up" 2 months later and didn't know where the time went lol

Some reps are indeed smart enough to immediately recognize a rooted phone. However, they should still assist you with issues. I do all the time

No I'm not judging by wallpaper I'm saying stock and on display it doesn't look appealing. Part of it is the wallpaper Samsung has on there stock. I can see why somebody who knows nothing about phones will overlook this.
I don't understand how you can't swap out your phone for the same phone. You are a customer and the phone is not even a year old. Sprint will replace your phone if you don't take no for answer. Your paying sprint x amount of dollars a month. Sometimes I replace a phone just because I drop it and it has a tiny scratch. At the most they make me pay 35 dollars which you can have refunded if you call account services. If your in Miami and you can't replace a phone please pm me I will help you for free.
Sprint works for you and unless they like losing customers I don't think a little phone replacement will come between them.

Yeah, people play with the Photon more in the store because Moto Blur is so beautiful, lol.

Many people dont get in to root cuz they dont want to read how to. Someone told me the hardest step is read, not click start in odin.

Stocl Rom here...no need to flash and have issues with roms not working properly...yes...80% of all users who are rooted and have flashed are posting questions or problems with these custom roms...I would rather not deal with that crap just for a pretty launcher, icons etc...Ill wail for ICS.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

My phone has yet to be rooted. I'm looking and waiting for that break out rom that's either a ICS or the official ICS update. I've root many phone but right now I don't see any real reason to root. The last phone I had was the e3d and I rooted that because it had so many roms. Every Tom on the GS2 pretty much look all the same IMO which is a stock looking rom. I need variety.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Flash your phone and find out lol to be honest because stock sucks (and not talking about tw) im saying hiccups and firmware for sure. And if samsung is going to release the new versions to the devs and not to sprint customers then the only way to take advantage is to root and do ourselves

I'm on stock..

I'm in a rooted and debloated stock ROM. Why? Because it's perfect. It's not like the EVO 4G days where you had to flash a custom ROM to get the most out of your phone, the stock ROM on this thing just screams!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

Stock and rooted. I would never put a custom rom. I used to always try them out on my og epic and they always had some sort of bug. EK02 has been good to me and I actually like Touchwiz. And if I get bored of it I can just switch to the stock Android launcher or download a new one from the market.... To each his own if you like custom roms good for you however don't try to knock us that like stock rom.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App

I ran a stock Rom for a while with root for a while with mine. I just recently (3 days) put a Rom on my phone, mainly did it so i can tether, and a few other things. I mainly play with kernels personally.
But like metalhead stated, this phone is awesome out of the box. And Im in complete agreement about the evo statement, though it was a great phone you had to change everything to really make it perform.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

I test my own modifications on my phone, and sometimes leave them.. but I despise themeing and I always use touchwiz...
any modifications done to my phone are purely functional..

Yeah, I "played" around with the photon for a few minutes and the only thing that really stood out to me was...Holy S&%$ this thing is laggy ,laughed at the EVO3D,looked at the IP4S..couldn't find the screen So the GS2 was a no brainer. Touchwiz isn't bad...but that's my opinion. Everyone has different tastes. The phone is fast the screen is big the camera is good so I'm still holding off on rooting for now as I really don't see any need to..for me anyways.

Some good easy roms.

So I have on order from tmobile 2 of these phones for my parents, they wanted to upgrade and learn how to use them. But coming from well... I nokia bar phone, and a old samsung slide phone, this change might be a little big. So I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good stable roms that are easy to use, have somewhat decent battery life. Or even if should I just stick with the stock one? Thank you guys. -CptSamir
I just released a ROM earlier today.

Personally I would let them knock around the stock rom for a little while until they get used to android and then try a custom ROM later.

Since they're for your parents, I would leave them as is, stock. Chances are, they're never going to understand or utilize the phone's full potential. Unless you plan on always being available to immediately troubleshoot any and all errors/issues that might/will pop up with a custom ROM, stock is the way to go. Even stock blows away other phones available.

If this is there 1st foray into Android, leave it stock. The worst thing you can do is have a custom ROM on it, then have it do some weird stuff, and they are up a creek when they go to the store to have them fix it.
If they want to mod the phone and mess with it, let them make the choice and let them learn to do it.
You could at least root and debloat the phones.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I wouldn't do anything to them, this phone is good stock. The last thing you need is them accidentally going to recovery and messing with something they shouldn't.
That's the best thing to do IMO.

I would just stick with the stock one personally. And this is coming from someone who in the past ALWAYS flashed a custom rom on other phones.
I'd flash a custom kernel, like darkside, because it make the phone much smoother

I vote for stock as well. I am still on stock (rooted and bloat-frozen) and it works well for me. If we had MIUI, then I would recommend that because your parents could easily cusome the look of their phones to their hearts' content without alot of knowledge and without great risk.

Should I root?

I have had a epic and a nexus s 4g and I rooted both of them and loved it. I rooted for the main reason to help with making the phone faster due to them just having a single core. Using the galaxy nexus it seems to be very fast stock. Will I see a big difference rooting this phone and over clocking it and running roms or is just as smooth as it being stock. I do not use wifi tether and themes really don't matter to me. All I care about is speed and stability. If rooting makes this beast even faster please let me know and recommended what you feel would be the best set up for me to use.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've always rooted my devices and ran custom firmware (Xperia x10, Captivate, Xperia Arc, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Ray, Nexus S)
But with the Galaxy Nexus...ah I am just not feeling it. I am going to wait I think until it gets old enough that google is not giving it the latest version of Android...and by that time I might not even have it because I plan on just paying the early upgrade fee and getting the latest Nexus always, then selling my current device to cover the cost anyways so...I don't know. But I am personally happy with it as is for the time being.
You've rooted before so you know what it's like. I like having complete control and the ability to have access to system apps as well as flash custom kernels and ROM's. So if you want speed and stability then yes root because ROM kernel combos will give you that. But I'm sure you're aware of this already. My phone is much faster with better battery life than stock. AOKP ms3 and faux123's newest kernel has given me what I look for. AOKP's customizations make the phone my own which is what I want besides the speed and stability.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I didn't root for a while but now am happy I did, I dont really notice speed increases but the customability is much better, I have a menu button always visible better lock screen with access to SMS, Widget for wireless AP and silent in my Notification bar. There is definitely benefits!
I never even had a smartphone till I got the nexus. I was so nervous about rooting it. Thought for sure I would brick it. But I realized what is the point of having a developers phone and not seeing what developers can do with it? Might as well have gotten a razr or something that would have ics in a short time. I read, and read some more, found a toolkit that also had a video and rooted my nexus. Best decision I ever made. The development for this phone is insane. I still get nervous when I flash any new rom, theme, animation mod, softkey, or whatever, but that keeps me on my toes so I don't make any mistakes. Stock was nice, but why not have stock on steroids? Battery life improvement is reason alone to root. So I guess I wood say read, learn and root.

This is probably the first phone I wouldnt root if it wernt for the need to remove carrier IQ. I wish we had a temproot so I could get carrierIQ out and keep the phone stock . I <3 touchwiz. Way more polished than sense imho .
So conflicted atm... But... think will wait just a /bit/ longer for it to shake out.
Bah, who am I kidding, downloading now.
---------- Post added at 06:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:31 AM ----------
Known issues:
- The stylus doesn't work. Need to investigate.
- Radio crashes every now and then.
- Audio in phone calls requires an initiation phase: make 2 phone calls to any number when you boot up to get audio functional on the 3rd call.
Ah, perhaps I will wait that big longer.
I'll be running stock TW until I get tired of it, then I'll try some launchers and get tired of those. Thats when I'll flash a new ROM and Kernel.
I'm going to stick with TouchWiz so that my phone would be fully functional as it was meant to be. Also, TW has drastically gotten much better and I already like the feel of it. It's already fast and buttery smooth. And with my phone rooted I had it tweaked at 5x5 grid with scrolling wallpaper and a sweet ass theme.
I haven't rooted yet, in the past only did it to have full data access (tether) that I pay for, and delete bloat. But with new updates coming at some point I've been making due just fine so I'll wait until after the big update to decide if I'll root. As far as stock versus touchwiz lol now that's easy regardless to the screen size or how smooth it runs I couldn't imagine losing my pen that's how I enter text etc and once of my main reasons for buying, could have kept my S3 & yes 4.8 to 5.5 is different but let's be serious why get a note 2 only to root and put stock.........losing all the reasons to own a note two ........laughing out loud. And FINALLY you delete carrier IQ Lmao, ok fine but if you haven't noticed this won't stop big brother so your peace of mind is shot boots. Non existent
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Besides the screen size, the S pen is the obvious stand out feature. Without all the S pen additions it'll be "just a big phone". I'm sticking with TW until I decide to completely give up on using the S pen.
I want to run stock but I'll probably wait awhile until all the spen goodies are rolled in. I don't use it that much, but I'd hate to lose it. My last experience with TW was the Vibrant. So far it hasn't been that bad. I'm running Nova Launcher.
The only function I use from stock is the pop up browser. I never use the pen unless I'm showing someone the gimmick of drawing with it. So yes. I'd love me some CM10.

I think your terms are misleading. To me, CM10 and AOKP aren't "Stock Android", they're "AOSP" or "Vanilla Android". Of course that's just semantics. "Stock" is the ROM that the phone shipped with. With that in mind....
I'll be running a rooted TouchWiz "stock" ROM, debloated (my idea of debloated), with Nova Launcher. I get the best of both worlds that way, in my opinion. All the goodies that Samsung has done to the phone that make it BETTER, in my opinion, than "AOSP", plus I can add the best of other ROMs. With Nova Launcher, I have the "look & feel" of "AOSP" as well.
YMMV.
By the way, why didn't you add an actual poll to the thread?
This phone + Paranoid Android is all I need. Most of samsungs apps are inferior to their aosp counter parts. The only thing I'll be losing out on is the s pen which I have never actually used in a useful way anyway. Samsung has great hardware but their software and design choices need improvement.
i'll be moving to cm10 once they sort out the calling/audio issue.. i bought this phone because it's a performance beast and the lovely screen.. the s-pen wasn't even a consideration in the purchase for me.. sure, it's a neat gimmick (pull out lightsaber sounds to amuse the kids) but i can't see myself using it for anything..
I'll be using it on touchwiz, since wifi calling is a must and multiview, while i'm really anticipating it, isn't a big enough reason for me to root just yet (I'm lazy and this phone is awesome even without root/custom ROMs). One day I will, but for now I'm just going to mess with the phone

On many phones I have stayed on stock for stability and feature set. In many cases when you go to another rom (especially AOSP) you lose TW features, S-Pen, etc... and in many cases I find not everything is 100%
That said the Note II development is fantastic. Many of the TW based roms give you everything you get with stock, but with more. AOSP you lose the TW feature set but it is amazingly stable and fast with a whole lot of other features.
With my S3 I could not find a single rom that I did not have problems on, but with the Note II I have a harder time deciding WHICH rom to use :good:

I agree with this guy. Even with my acer liquid mt when I rooted it and used the leaked gingerbread rom for it, the camera (which i use a lot got messed up and would over expose the pictures to white messes of garbage) and I noticed that after switching back to the normal stock rom with root, the camera would screw the video with red green and blue lines...gross I know...
And plus, just like my old ipod touch 2g (which doesnt work cuz the battery is dead. big surprise CRapple) it looked as normal as it should, but behind the curtain, the device was screaming at me to stop, every little tweak, hack, or anything I could do to the device. (Except install android on it because the project cut off 2Gs)
So what im saying is, its more fun to screw with the stock app.
Dont like the boatware?
Download a root app uninstaller.
Dont like anything about most devices?

If you are that concerned with the camera features working why not flash a ROM like Scrosler's CLEAN ROM ATT SE. It made from ATT base. Completely stock without the bloatware. Everything works perfectly and you are not at the mercy of your carrier to recieve OTA's instead your at Scroslers lol. But seriously, I would much rather get/wait for updates from a DEV here on XDA (Where I can talk directly to the DEV and or people in the thread also using the ROM) instead of waiting for carriers to take forever and you can't directly talk to the team of people who made the Official ROM . So for me if you want stock look and feel with no bloatware and is more customizable than actual stock I would go with a ROM based or made from complete stock base. Just my 2 cents

besides the excellent support miscom. Thanks miscom
I'm on stock cause I got no reason to be otherwise. Everything works as intended, and the so-called "bloatware" is in reality a complete non-issue.

To MOD or Not to MOD.....???

Gents...............(& Ladies)
Im a huge fan of Cyanogen mod. However I have had my Note II since day it came out & i really like everything about it cant complain at all. Just curious if its worth MOD'n it and going back to Cyanogen. Also does 4G work on Cyanogen? Any feedback on this would be great!!!!
4g works. Worth it for the themes in my opinion but battery life will take a dive. At least it did with me.
If CM had better usage of the camera and if spen worked I'd be all over it. But it doesn't and never will so it'll have to always be touchwiz for me

Battery life issues are always expected with CM but I'm used to that. However no use of S pen is interesting. Is there any reason they won't make it work?

S-pen works, you just lose the touchwiz apps. Look in the OP of the cyanogen thread for replacement apps

This is the first Android phone I have no desire to use a custom ROM with.
4.1.2 + Nova = win for me.

I've been running CM since the G1, as weird as it is, I don't think I will flash any AOSP ROMs. I'm very happy with TW + Whomp.
This is the 1st device I feel it doesn't need any custom roms. I'm not a fan of TW but this phone is a beast running rooted stock.

I tried custom roms on mine when I was looking to hack wifi tether into working, and figured the third party roms would be easier, but losing S-Memo was detrimental to my enjoyment of the phone.
It also seemed much buggier and unreliable in comparison to stock, no matter which rom I used. I ended up going back to stock, and the bugs that I'd experienced with stock seemed to go away too... Right at the moment I'm unrooted in an effort to try to download the update, but no dice so I'm suffering.
This is an intense difference from my last Samsung phone, the Epic 4g, which I rooted nearly the day I got it because it was so unusable. I almost refused to sell it without a third-party rom on it for fear of diminishing my Ebay reputation for selling ****ty products.
Overall a good phone, with great stock stability and software. I haven't had a force-close or crash since I reflashed stock.
Try it out. It won't kill ya
I come from the nexus S and galaxy nexus ran CM on both since the first day I bought the phone tried CM on my note 2 but this phone meant to run with a stock rom just rooted so I can enable all app multi window and remove some bloatware.

I was gonna run pacman rom but really don't want to lose any of the s functions. Owning a note 2 without all the functionality is like going to a birthday party and not having any cake!!!! Just my 2 cents but to each his own
