Remember me, your worst nightmare - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Well I will eat crow here now. But in a matter of a few hours I have managed to figure out (with a bit of help just for the unrooting part) I unrooted my phone and was back on stock sprint JB for a short time and compared to the custom codename android, it sucked!!! It was slow and laggy. I know I caused a fit here but hey, I learned the difference between stock and custom and also learned how to root, unroot and flash new roms using my mac. I wanted to let you guys know even though you think I am a biotch, I learned a lot from you here and a few others. It is friggin hilarious to me that I pitched a fit to go back to stock on sprint and here I am back to codename android and now I know how to update and flash roms. Go figure.

Holy ****! You manage to do what I been trying to do? Can you let me know how instead of giving me a link to what it seems for a noon Chinese....
Step by step...ppleaseee

I've tried all the custom Roms, and STILL prefer stock. For me, stock is silky smooth and absolutely the most stable in every tiny crevasse. I'm staying stock till CM10 releases a final build.

stock was so slow and laggy compared to custom rom. The custome rom works much better and I can do so much more with it.

colomob, I am more than willing to help but is a nexus 7 a tablet, I just got this phone and it is my first Droid so if someone here could let me know if everything would be the same to help him update. The other issue is I just learned all this in the last few days and I have a mac so I have no idea how to do any of this on pc but that is where all the tutorials are based on, using pc so should I assume you also have a mac?

No no no... I'm posting this from a nexus 7. I have a galaxy nexus. That's my problem. Not the nexus 7. Thanks in advance.

Some good easy roms.

So I have on order from tmobile 2 of these phones for my parents, they wanted to upgrade and learn how to use them. But coming from well... I nokia bar phone, and a old samsung slide phone, this change might be a little big. So I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good stable roms that are easy to use, have somewhat decent battery life. Or even if should I just stick with the stock one? Thank you guys. -CptSamir
I just released a ROM earlier today.
_Thursday
Personally I would let them knock around the stock rom for a little while until they get used to android and then try a custom ROM later.

Since they're for your parents, I would leave them as is, stock. Chances are, they're never going to understand or utilize the phone's full potential. Unless you plan on always being available to immediately troubleshoot any and all errors/issues that might/will pop up with a custom ROM, stock is the way to go. Even stock blows away other phones available.

If this is there 1st foray into Android, leave it stock. The worst thing you can do is have a custom ROM on it, then have it do some weird stuff, and they are up a creek when they go to the store to have them fix it.
If they want to mod the phone and mess with it, let them make the choice and let them learn to do it.
You could at least root and debloat the phones.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I wouldn't do anything to them, this phone is good stock. The last thing you need is them accidentally going to recovery and messing with something they shouldn't.
That's the best thing to do IMO.

Pretty much it depends on your parents understanding of Technology my mother I got her into android I gave her my old Vibrant custom rom and all and from time to time i would update it to something newer and she would get how to use it pretty quick sure she has had some issues but if your knowledgeable enough you can help em in those snags as for ROMs i would suggest Bombaridier personally my favorite
I would just stick with the stock one personally. And this is coming from someone who in the past ALWAYS flashed a custom rom on other phones.
I'd flash a custom kernel, like darkside, because it make the phone much smoother

I vote for stock as well. I am still on stock (rooted and bloat-frozen) and it works well for me. If we had MIUI, then I would recommend that because your parents could easily cusome the look of their phones to their hearts' content without alot of knowledge and without great risk.

Should I root?

I have had a epic and a nexus s 4g and I rooted both of them and loved it. I rooted for the main reason to help with making the phone faster due to them just having a single core. Using the galaxy nexus it seems to be very fast stock. Will I see a big difference rooting this phone and over clocking it and running roms or is just as smooth as it being stock. I do not use wifi tether and themes really don't matter to me. All I care about is speed and stability. If rooting makes this beast even faster please let me know and recommended what you feel would be the best set up for me to use.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've always rooted my devices and ran custom firmware (Xperia x10, Captivate, Xperia Arc, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Ray, Nexus S)
But with the Galaxy Nexus...ah I am just not feeling it. I am going to wait I think until it gets old enough that google is not giving it the latest version of Android...and by that time I might not even have it because I plan on just paying the early upgrade fee and getting the latest Nexus always, then selling my current device to cover the cost anyways so...I don't know. But I am personally happy with it as is for the time being.
You've rooted before so you know what it's like. I like having complete control and the ability to have access to system apps as well as flash custom kernels and ROM's. So if you want speed and stability then yes root because ROM kernel combos will give you that. But I'm sure you're aware of this already. My phone is much faster with better battery life than stock. AOKP ms3 and faux123's newest kernel has given me what I look for. AOKP's customizations make the phone my own which is what I want besides the speed and stability.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I didn't root for a while but now am happy I did, I dont really notice speed increases but the customability is much better, I have a menu button always visible better lock screen with access to SMS, Widget for wireless AP and silent in my Notification bar. There is definitely benefits!
I never even had a smartphone till I got the nexus. I was so nervous about rooting it. Thought for sure I would brick it. But I realized what is the point of having a developers phone and not seeing what developers can do with it? Might as well have gotten a razr or something that would have ics in a short time. I read, and read some more, found a toolkit that also had a video and rooted my nexus. Best decision I ever made. The development for this phone is insane. I still get nervous when I flash any new rom, theme, animation mod, softkey, or whatever, but that keeps me on my toes so I don't make any mistakes. Stock was nice, but why not have stock on steroids? Battery life improvement is reason alone to root. So I guess I wood say read, learn and root.

Stock for now, but another aftermarket ROM that I gave to my wife for her HTC Incredible is MIUI. Look for a previous build though (GB), the new ones are utter sh*t IMHO. I've had a lot of fun with MIUI back in the days of FroYo.
Stock rooted jb its great.
If she's a "below average" user.
Then stock JB.
If she wants to have fun with phone and is actually able to remember things about the phone, CM9/10
If she wants to get all complicated, then AOKP.

Bleh stock... I suppose that's not a bad option on aosp the words stock on her old phones are terrible because of touchwiz and Moto blur
Cm9 is pretty stable though i assume. Any bugs?
CM9 Skyrocket
Stock anything, rooted for AdAway but that's probably about it. I've had too many experiences with non-power users doing that angry thing people do when they don't comprehend technology.
MIUI. Simple, clean, extremely customizable.
My gf doesn't even want to try a new rom, she really seem to enjoy it.
BUT, and this is major point, my gf actually isn't that much into technology, so i assume she just wants the cutest and most user friendly experience.

The wife has watched me root more than 20 or so different phones I've run through for the last 3 yrs and STILL asks me questions when I explain it. It's not that girls can't use ROMs, its that he's talking about rooting and ROMing her phone when she has no idea what's going on. I'm all about girls being into hacking phones, but only if they do it themselves!
I don't condone rooting and ROMing someone else's phone unless they know what's going on and could do it themselves.
I guess I'd just leave it stock and make her a custom Fashion Barbie Nerdgirl of the Undead theme or something, for brownie points.

True. I recently passed my sgs2 on to my dad to use on tmo prepaid & I put that thing back to stock, rooted rom for him.
However, on aokp, I have no data drops, GPS issues, any problems etc... so I don't really see an issue with that.

Stock or custom Rom ?

I have owned three Android devices before getting my GNex. Each of those three devices were rooted and rom-ed within the first one month. I have had my GNex for almost two months now on stock jellybean, no root or custom recovery. The flasher within me is itching to flash something new. The pragmatic within me finds no justification for flashing. The other devices had some issue or the other; everything works fine on stock jb on the Gnex. I am trying my best to side with the pragmatic.
Question to the community- I know what I gain from flashing a custom rom ( customizability, overclocking, etc) . Other than the warranty, what do I lose by moving away from the stock rom?

Well, I for one won't be flashing any ROMs (at least for several months) once my GNEX arrives tomorrow. Whenever I had an unsolvable issue which was with the ROM I chose and would ask for help, I'd get the most cynical responses. "That's what you signed up for" seems to be the common theme. It's like people enjoy being in constant beta tester mode, even when they are supposedly running the stable build of a ROM. The only reason I would flash a ROM is if the default JB build the phone came with was horribly broken. Overclocking on something like a phone is a bit excessive, especially for something that is already a powerhouse and can run the most intense games available for it with relative ease.

I tried several highly regarded JB roms (ParanoidAndroid, CM10 nightly, the varieties of AndroidME), but keep coming back to stock + Nova Launcher. Don't even need to (re-)root for that. Just a great combination that you can rely on.
But when I get that itch, I play around with ParanoidAndroid for a few days here and there. A really interesting rom, which I'm sure you'll hear a lot about.
I was coming from a sgs2 that was on a custom ROM and surprisingly I'm happy with stock 4.1 and see no need to flash a custom ROM. Maybe just a kernel to get better battery life even tho it lasts me all day with about 4 hours of screen on time so I can't really complain.

I've been rooting, modding, and even custom ROM building since my Samsung Moment days and ever since. Since I got my Galaxy Nexus on Sprint, however, all I've done is flash a completely pure AOSP stock build of 4.1.1. With this device I have no desire other than to be running the most current Android source. Everything just works, and works well. I have no need for flashy features. Jelly Bean already has every feature I need.
Sent from my Stock AOSP Android 4.1.1 Galaxy Nexus.
I love stock vanilla Android. All my other phones, I'd root and install Cyanogenmod asap. I'd always use the modified factory roms on offer as well, because Cyanogenmod often didn't work that well in the early days of a new device or Android version.
On the nexus I don't really need to flash, but I still use Cyanogenmod 10 anyway for the sole reason the power control toggles in the status bar are very handy.
Either way, only a nexus device can offer such high quality aosp based roms. I say have fun trying a few. Yes there are still issues sometimes but it's nothing like what I've experienced in other phones.

One of the reasons. For me it's just to have the latest AOSP software, and for me that is enough. The Nexus fills both plates very well.

The reason I got a nexus was because I hated all the touchwiz/sense stuff and the pre-installed carrier garbage... thus removing my reason to root my phone (not that I don't like to tinker, but 18 credit hours leaves little time).
The only reason I ended up rooting was for PGM so I dont destroy my power button in 3 months like all my previous phones, and for the widgets to show up in apex/nova. Aside from those, I run a totally stock system...
On an unrelated note, sooooo many iphone owners in my classes ask me how to wake their iphone by swiping... i love telling them that they cant

With the GSM Galaxy Nexus, you can unlock, root, find a custom ROM and flash it, then find the Google Wallet APK and install it. It'll say "unsupported device" because Google wants to warn you about "rooting," but it'll activate and work .
I'm using NexusHD 4.3 with GApps and Google Wallet.
With Galaxy Nexus and Jelly Bean there is no reason to try custom ROMS. Only bug a can find is 2.4GHZ wireless.
I've tried to stay as close to JB stock as possible, flashing a vanilla deodexed build of JB and just a couple of mods (battery percent and louder speaker sound) that increase everyday functionality for me and a kernel change because it increases battery life and on demand performance by a practically useful margin. Everyone's personal preferences I suppose but that's the great thing about a nexus device, it can please different tastes/uses very well.
Gnex is so boring ...there is no compelling reason to flash .. everything works just great without any tweaking
Life with galaxy s was more fun...flashing every nightly..dealing with bugs..spending hours on xda forum to find the fixes/work arounds / tricks to improve battery life..I miss all these.

Good lord don't flash a custom ROM on someone else's phone. If they wanna flash their own phone after learning about it then that's fine, but don't do it for them. Leave that **** stock.
for sister - Stock.
for myself - PA
Don't flash anything for anyone. Until they actually understand this whole rooting and flashing. People brick their phone BECAUSE they don't know what they're doing. Hack, I don't even recommend you to root her phone. Tell her to learn how root works and risks at least.
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
Flash All of them
but seriously almost all the roms are fantastic. I personally use aokp and im contemplating trying out minco, but each rom has its differences. Decide what features in a rom are important to you. look through the OP's of each rom and decide which fits your needs the best.
I agree with those above, dont flash a rom on some one elses phone cuz inevitably they will run into some issue and blame you for "breaking" their phone.
Another ROM thread? Really?
And btw, we are back at calling them "sisters", like 40 years ago?
