I've been playing the new Angry Birds Space today, and I've been noticing something very annoying. The way you hold your phone while playing games like Angry Birds, your thumb is constantly moving in and out of the view of the ambient light sensor, subsequently causing the screen brightness to always be changing from dark to light and back. Is there anyway to set up screen brightness settings on a per app basis?
Currently running Calkulin's E4GT v2.9.2
Not to my knowledge. I just go to display settings and uncheck auto brightness.

Probably what I'm going to have to do. There are plenty of apps/widgets that allow me to toggle the screen brightness settings and all, but I was hoping there was a way to do it automatically on a per app basis so that I didn't have to worry about forgetting to turn auto back on.

Its a problem with the auto bright and the polling interval. its just not doing smooth transitions. Work in the settings to get it to smooth out. i used to have this issue, dont remember exactly how i fixed it though.
Are you doing anything with the special settings under automatic backlight in CMsettings? or just using the auto brightness in the regular Android settings? I'm using no special stuff in CMsettings and mine works fine.

Screen Brightness: I have set the screen brightness to medium and and timeout to 60 seconds. I have started to notice that it will change the settings on its own. I will notice the screen is dim then look at the brightness setting and it will be set to minimum. Another thing that is driving me crazy is that it will dim the screen if you don't touch it regardless of the screen time out.
I have also noticed that sometimes when typing the screen does not follow were the words are going.
Other than these two minor pet peeves I absolutely love this phone. If it had a vag it may replace my wife.
The screen dimming is probably done by u. If u run your hand back and forth at the bottom of the notification bar it will change your brightness. Auto brightness has to be off. Its a cool feature that the original epic had.

u might want to disable the "power saving mode"... i had the same issue as u, but it seems to be fine since i disabled power saving mode
That's the thing I have my settings to auto brightness off
Edit: I will try turning the power saving mode off
Did not know that about the notification bar dimming the screen that's a cool feature.

Thanks I bet the notification bar might be it. That is awesome, I can't believe I didn't know that yet.
IF your in the internet browser that came with the phone and you turn up your brightness all the way and then you notice while your look at page all of a sudden your brightness will go back down to like 10% I found out the culprit.
the browser has a BROWSER BRIGHTNESS option in the menu. you can turn auto on or theres another slider there and it appears factory setting is all the way left or lowest.
this was pissing me off today while I was waking in the sun, I thought I had my brightness on all the way but with in 5 seconds while look here on XDA, the brightness kept going back down on its own and I do not have auto on. the thing I was doing to get it back up bright again was to do the notification swipe to the right and that would only temporary fix it.
While I'm at home in the evening, I've been trying to turn my brightness down to the lowest level. I tried the system slider and also tried different widgets and apps bit there has been one issue with all of them. Every time I put the phone into sleep/lock, the brightness setting doesn't stay are the lowest setting. (Auto-brightness off). The brightness would reset to 20 - 30%.

There's probably an app you have installed that is messing with it

Go to
Settings --> Display
There's another option called "Auto adjust screen power" which auto adjusts LCD brightness as well.
Just a guess really.. Hope it does something for ya
Updated to stock ICS last night. Today I came across a glitch.
On Gingerbread, whenever the screen goes off it smoothly dims off. On ICS, it now dims with 2 clicks (like it dims half way, then goes completely off). The glitch kicks in when I turn on the screen, sometimes it doesn't come full brightness (the brightness that I have it set on). When that happens, I have to go into settings and touch the brightness bar for it to go back to normal. Anyone else noticing this?
Also fyi, I have auto brightness off.

Turning screen off has been like that on ICS. Turning on, mine is fine. I have seen what you are describing when using stock browser.

Who here chooses automatic brightness vs the controlled brightness....and does the auto effect the battery a lot?

I just switched from controlled to auto, and I love it. Battery goes up a ton!!

It's personal preference, I always use manual brightness control with my phone for several reasons:
- automatic brightness does not always adjust to the correct brightness, especially when moving from outdoor to indoor.
- it's not that hard to adjust the brightness myself. The ROM I am using has a brightness slider in the notification drawer which is very convenient.
- I usually keep my brightness down and only need to turn up the brightness when there is a harsh light reflecting on my phone screen (such as the sun).
- lastly, not using automatic brightness will definitely help with battery life (but only if you keep the screen brightness down and depending how often you keep the screen on)
Using automatic brightness is useful, but for my usage I prefer to save that little bit of battery life if possible.
OK thanks for the feedback

I use Lux Autobrightness, you can set custom brightness levels for each environment. Much better than the default autobrightness for android.
