Two weird things I have noticed - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Screen Brightness: I have set the screen brightness to medium and and timeout to 60 seconds. I have started to notice that it will change the settings on its own. I will notice the screen is dim then look at the brightness setting and it will be set to minimum. Another thing that is driving me crazy is that it will dim the screen if you don't touch it regardless of the screen time out.
I have also noticed that sometimes when typing the screen does not follow were the words are going.
Other than these two minor pet peeves I absolutely love this phone. If it had a vag it may replace my wife.

The screen dimming is probably done by u. If u run your hand back and forth at the bottom of the notification bar it will change your brightness. Auto brightness has to be off. Its a cool feature that the original epic had.

u might want to disable the "power saving mode"... i had the same issue as u, but it seems to be fine since i disabled power saving mode

That's the thing I have my settings to auto brightness off
Edit: I will try turning the power saving mode off

Did not know that about the notification bar dimming the screen that's a cool feature.

Thanks I bet the notification bar might be it. That is awesome, I can't believe I didn't know that yet.

IF your in the internet browser that came with the phone and you turn up your brightness all the way and then you notice while your look at page all of a sudden your brightness will go back down to like 10% I found out the culprit.
the browser has a BROWSER BRIGHTNESS option in the menu. you can turn auto on or theres another slider there and it appears factory setting is all the way left or lowest.
this was pissing me off today while I was waking in the sun, I thought I had my brightness on all the way but with in 5 seconds while look here on XDA, the brightness kept going back down on its own and I do not have auto on. the thing I was doing to get it back up bright again was to do the notification swipe to the right and that would only temporary fix it.

Auto brightness and cyanogen rom question

Any way to fix the cyanogens rom auto dimmer for the brightness of the screen? Mine goes from dark to bright, there is no in between

I haven't noticed that, but I have noticed that it doesn't go as dark as when you set it manually. It's blinding at night.

Im the exact opposite I went back to skyraider because cm6 rc3 was dark as hell at night or even in a lit room. I had to go outside to get the screen to turn up
I just set the screen on medium brightness, but I miss the auto adjustment like 2.1 had. This is the only thing that is giving me issues. I see that there are some settings in cyogenmod, any way to make up the amount of points of brightness so I don't get just dark/medium/bright?

I had the same problem initially. I think I've got it fixed, though. CM6 is WAY more configurable than anything else I've played with.

Go into menu, settings, CyanogenMod settings, user interface, automatic backlight. from there, you can change the light level required to dim the screen. in the edit other levels menu, you can completely customize the levels and even add new thresholds if you want.
I just adjusted the dim level to 24 and changed the lowest light level to 35. No further problems.
Did the screen setting need a re boot? Mine didn't do anything

Screen brightness changed immediately after clicking Save & Apply for me. I found that there's a big change in the light level going from 31 to 32 (32-35 are all the same, didn't go further) and setting it at 32 seems to work well for now. My guess is that there are ranges for any given value of brightness
I couldn't get the Buttons values to change except for turning them off when set to 0. Even a value of 1 sets the buttons to full brightness, which is disappointing as it bothers me how bright they are.
Anyway, thank you jtcarnes for the quick instructions and thanks CM for the feature.
I personally just use this program called bightness profiles and set it to about 30-40% inside and then 100% outside when needed, atually saves more power this way also.

Auto Brightness broken with 4.1.1?

Has anyone noticed that their auto brightness is kind of broken after upgrading to JB? For example, if I'm in a really bright area and go into dark, the screen does not dim itself, however this can be fixed by going into settings and un-checking and checking the auto brightness box.
Obviously this is pretty annoying... Is there a fix for this?

I've noticed the same. It stays bright a lot of the time in dark places. I haven't noticed it staying dim in sunlight though.
To me, the way it was before seemed broken. It would constantly change its brightness level. This was effected by the light reflected off clothing, etc
I love it now

He he good one
But I Dont find any issue with it either. In fact, if you dig in, you'll find the process consumes 30% lesser battery than before ie. Screen + sensor timing and refresh for both...

I'm actually pretty sure this is the default behaviour for ICS as well its only 3rd party roms that added in the ability to auto dim as well as auto bright the stock way is it only goes dimmer if the screen turns off and back on other wise it stays at the maximum brightness
Sometimes if I'm using the widget to move from full to auto brightness and tap very fast, it'll sit at full brightness. If I toggle slower its fine. Definitely some bug there.
I think auto brightness is much better in 4.1.1. Before it was far too dim, now it seems just right in all conditions.
I'm using the app "Lux Auto Brightness" and it couldn't be doing a better job.
Definitely check it out if you're unhappy like I was with the stock auto-brightness
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
that has been the default behaviour from ages for stock goole rom:
the autobrightness only can increase...it doesn't decrease, unless u lock and ulock the phone or check and uncheck autobrightness
that the intended behaviour google want..the brightness get increased, but not decrease..
So you're saying that the auto feature in 4.0.4 was broken then?

Yes, it delayed the lock screen and when I set my phone down under a bright lamp and it woke up hours later in pure darkness, it might soft reset.
happens to me as well on stock 4.1.1. if I'm in a dark room and put the phone under a lamp or something, the brightness goes up instantly, but it never comes down until I lock/unlock the screen again.
in fact most of the time I think the thing is too bright (but that may be because I come from a nexus one always on the lowest setting since the autobrightness there didnt really work well).
it's a minor annoyance definitely
Same Problem with Note2!
Hi guys,
found this thread during my search for this brightness issue. My Galaxy Note 2 has the same strange behavior. But I figured out something: when I lay down the device to a table or bring it to 0 degrees in my hand, automatic brightness it's decreasing perfectly! Can you confirm this behaviour at your nexus? I guess it's a kind of strange Samsung " feature", maybe?
Thanks, Michael
Ahoy, I was also researching my auto brightness issues when I found this thread. I can confirm the behavior from the previous post on my SGS2 on Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
If the phone is in vertical position and I do the lamp test, it will stay on maximum brightness no matter what, but in horizontal position dimming works perfectly.

zytrel.

[Q] Adjust Brightness Toggle

Hi All,
Is there anyway to adjust the 4 brightness levels of the brightness toggle? One of my toggles is set to 0 or 1. My baby was playing with my phone and the screen went black. I thought he had screwed my phone so I ended up LNGPST back to ZVC. Didn't help. Couldn't figure it out. Finally, I tilted my phone at a certain angle and could just barely see an outline of a box. I realized the brightness was all the way down. Unfortunately, I couldn't see enough to turn it back up (even in pitch black room) but I pulled down the notification area and haphazardly was clicking on the screen until it turned up.
Anyways, I would like to adjust the minimum brightness toggle so I don't have to do that again. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Are you using stock?

Screen dimming problems

Is anyone having dimming problems with there screen? For instance, when I'm on the browser, and want to swipe the screen upward with my finger the screen dims out right when I slide my finger without even messing with the brightness slider. It happens even on FB. The only way to bring up the brightness back is to turn off screen with the power button and back up or move the slider on drop down.
Anyone having this similar problem? Thanks.

I have issues where the screen doesn't adjust based on ambient light.
I am assuming you dont have auto-brightness turned on, do you have the same issue when it is on?
I haven't tried that. Bit its the screen that dims down by itself when I touch the screen. I did a factory reset when I was NF4 and update to NF9 and the problem is still there.
Sent from my SM-N900T using XDA Free mobile app
I don't know if this is the same as yours, but few times, when screen is close to it's time out, it dims to tell me so, now if I want to keep screen on I would swipe or touch it, most of the time it will go back to normal, but in very few cases, count down timer will reset, so the screen stays on, but the brightness doesn't come back, screen will stay at low power and I need to double click power button, to turn the screen off and on to get back proper brightness. It's very rare, haven't seen it since my update to NF9 week ago, but I've seen it. No big deal since it's rare and easily fixed with double click. If your problem is not time out related, then I have not seen it. Either way I would speculate it is software related, somehow screen brightness register is improperly or not updated at all. It doesn't bother me at all, but if it was I would probably try factory reset after full backup.

Screen Auto Dimming

Anyone else getting an auto dim of the screen randomly? I have a T-Mobile HTC 10 which is apparently 2 versions behind the unlocked models and I'm getting a weird issue where my screen does not have auto brightness enabled and the brightness is near max, yet the screen will randomly auto dim pretty dark but the brightness settings haven't changed. I am planning on changing my T-Mobile version into the US Unlocked model (software wise) to see if this helps...
Yes. Have seen this as well. Annoying when trying to take pictures, and the screen suddenly auto dims. ATT on BadBoyz.

It's been happening to me as well.
Did you guys solve that? I am having the same issue. Although it only happened after my battery went grey and showed an exclamation point for no reason. I reboot and it started doing that especially in chrome
Mine does the same thing. I'm on the latest US unlocked. Kind of annoying.
Well my easy solution is turn auto brightness off I mean really 90% us here can operate our phones with eyes closed so having to adjust a screen brightness even when u can't see screen is easy I do it daily I mean I found half way be a happy med I can go outside in sun see just a lil kinda makes more private lol

The problem is the screen auto-dimming on its own, nothing to do with manually changing the brightness level
Im on viper I have all power save off and all auto brightness or anything to do with screen that's auto off I have had any issues now that being said... When I uses a force doze app it will go really bright when it turns sensor back on then right back to my manual setting but this only happens when using force doze app
