Stupid question..... - About xda-developers.com

This may be stupid, but I wondered what Xda stood for. Is it an abbreviation? Just curious.

Maybe this...
The "X" represents convergence of voice and information/data within one product; the "da" stands for "digital assistant", as in PDA

What's Next For Nexus & Android??

I have had the luxury of trying a ton of Android devices, None quite like the Galaxy Nexus (Gnex). I am absolutely amazed everyday by the community, and this phone is CRAZY when unlocked and Rooted!!
My Only question is what's next?
As far as design goes I don't think they can do more. I know processing power could be added, but I'm starting to think the smartphone craziness has plateaued.
Being really gifted & creative is not one of my qualities. Lol .
But what is the next mobile craze going to be?
Are we going to get more personal (Skype), or more Avatar oriented?

My guess is more integrated voice actions/ commands, with a better tts engine.
So staying the course with speech to text dictation?

Agreed!

I would love NFC to be used for almost everything!

I get the feeling he's talking phone/hardware wise too. I think he also nailed it. Plateau... There will be quad cores and most likely someone is going to stick a 6 core in one eventually. Camera marketing will stop somewhere around 536mp meaningless as the watt ratings on most amps. But this is where I think the turning point is from that new double fast phone dropping each week on the hardware side and the next best optimizations will be software. IMO.

TI chips being phased out?

Not exactly GNex news but we do have OMAP chips in our phones.
I might be misunderstanding the article but it might be that TI is leaving the mobile chip business.
Which is a shame IMO.
More competition is better and the OMAP chips are generally great.

Yikes.... according to that article it appears that TI is in trouble. As I read the article I was under the same impression. I'm sure if TI was exiting the mobile market it would most likely be huge internet news. I'm bet the company would be closed lip until they've made their final decision and are ready to make a move.
It would be a real shame to see TI exit the market, as they make some of the most open source friendly SoC's.
Though, they have their chips in quite a few high profile phones, and they are a nice alternative to nVidia, qcom and samsung

Agreed. Isn't that why we have omaps ....due to the open source. Some of the exynos source is out there but it will definitely be interesting to see what will be put into the new nexus phone.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
OMAP chips are used in many open sources projects and niche devices in linux communities too, not just phones, so it will effect them also if TI leaves. I was hyping for the OMAP5 on the next Nexus.
I'm looking forward to OMAP5.

Hopefully they still continue omap 5 development

That sucks, OMAP chips always have the most extra features that other chips just don't offer. The next Nexus will probably have Tegra 3 + LTE anyway.

Man... coming from the thrill 4g which had the omap 4430 and the gnex with omap 4460... only diff being the higher clock speed...
I've really come to love the omap series... it can play all the tegra 2 games full specs...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium HD app
It looks like mostly they are getting rid of discrete baseband chips due to demand for integrated basebands. We will definitely see omap5 , the decision to back out completely is just a suggestion at this point and it would take years for the phase out to complete so no need to worry at this point.

A boring layout
Non configurable settings
No choice on what you want to do with your device
No customization
Expensive accessories
The one thing apple has with iOS is its always upgraded to all devices. Not fragmented like android. We still don't have jelly bean. Also build quality. I'm getting tired of plastic $600 phones. At least apple uses quality materials. Also the iPhone has created a culture and had captured peoples hearts. its why they will always be on top.

Yeah that makes sense since the Android market share is already above 50% and iOS is still around 30%. I guess with those percentages Apple is most definitely still on top. LOL
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Apple is on top as far as one phone model outselling any android model. I know the s3 recently outsold the 4s but what do you expect when everyone knows that it is very likely that a new phone would soon come out. New phone coming out means that better hardware will soon be available as well as the current hardware should be cheaper.
Android is on top as far as market value goes though by obviously having the largest share of the smart phone market.
I hate when people compare the fragmentation of android and apple. It is not conceivable to have every android device being kept with the latest android OS simply because it would be far too costly to do so. There are thousands of different models of android phones which have different hardware which further requires different software and drivers to operate their phones. How can someone compare keeping less than 10 devices up to date with the latest OS versus keeping thousands of devices up to date with the latest os?

What you call fragmentation is really called choice, which is better for the consumer. In an anticompetitive market consumers lose out. Appleā€™s anticompetitive market also contributes greatly to a lack of innovation. iOS is basically the same crap it has been since the first iteration.
It is surprising that you are on XDA forums and you haven't discovered Black Jelly.
I was an iPhone user for four years before I jumped to the atrix and now the galaxy 3. I would never go back but I can honestly say the most intriguing feature of the iphone 5 is the graphics capability. It is definitely unmatched in its class. But its never enough to get me back. Ive been sober for two years now with no urge to go back.

I agree with you about Apple's build quality - - it is very good. However, I'm perfectly happy with the build quality of my S3 as well. As for fragmentation, I have to laugh. Just because different gen iPhones run the same iOS version doesn't mean Apple enables all features for all phones. iOS is becoming very fragmented, they just disguise it better than Android.
And even the new iPhone has a tiny screen. My wife will get the new iPhone, but I'd never consider switching back after having used Android for the last 18 months.

Newegg for tablets?

Why does this app show up as incompatible? It's a tablet app it should work!
Anywhere I can just gets the apk to try it out?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Just because it's a tablet app does not automatically equate to compatibility. It could be that the app is dependent on a 10.1" screen or rear camera.
That being said, it seems that the tablet app is far less polished than the mobile app anyway. I wouldn't even bother with it.

I agree with the OP in that I would like to see filters replaced by advisements but your point is well taken.
The app developer did not write in the resources for all sizes of devices. Its in a manifest type file that play store reads. The play store does not monitor or control apps or app quality and rather its up to the developer to specify what device its built for.
So short of starting arguments. Email developer of the app. That is the only one who can help.
Good luck.
I did actually, I got a response "we have no information on that item at this time, sorry for the inconvenience".
I know why they filters are in place but it can be annoying. To me a nexus device is the android standard, any application that is relevant should show up in the market, but it doesn't. It's also frustrating in the case of upgrading, like when I upgraded from my aging Samsung Captivate to my HTC Vivid that has twice the power, and yet a fraction of compatibility. I seriously have games that I played on my captivate that won't show for the Vivid. So what your saying is a single core Galaxy S phone with 512mb of ram and an aging power vr sgx540 can play Nova 2 just fine but a Qualcomm Snapdragon s3 with a dual core processor and a gig of ram and an adreno 230 gpu can't? Doesn't make much sense to me.
I am using that as an example but it is a true one. I no longer game on my phone as I use the nexus now but it does seem ridiculous that upgrading to a better phone or tablet can break your compatibility.

Nokia Pureview on android (Mission Impossible?)

Hello,
I saw the camera of lumia 920 and i was amazed. Just wanted to ask if pureview is a hardware thing or software...It would be great if we had this great feature on our phones...What do you think?
Hardware is equally important as there is a bbbiiiiiggg difference between 8 and 41 mega pixel.
As for the software it is virtually impossible to port mainly because it would be a cross platform port.
But in ever expanding technology world it might be just possible.
Whole os has been ported in case of hd2 but just porting a single app is completely different thing.

Probably won't happen Samsung has some low light software built into the stock camera. The 920s camera is mainly hardware.

It's not really the 41MP that make the difference, but the size of the sensor. That many MP are only important if you like to zoom in when watching the photos that you took, but how often do we really need that? It is the best camera put on a phone, though. I only hope to keep seeing phone cameras with that large sensors.
