What's Next For Nexus & Android?? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have had the luxury of trying a ton of Android devices, None quite like the Galaxy Nexus (Gnex). I am absolutely amazed everyday by the community, and this phone is CRAZY when unlocked and Rooted!!
My Only question is what's next?
As far as design goes I don't think they can do more. I know processing power could be added, but I'm starting to think the smartphone craziness has plateaued.
Being really gifted & creative is not one of my qualities. Lol .
But what is the next mobile craze going to be?
Are we going to get more personal (Skype), or more Avatar oriented?

My guess is more integrated voice actions/ commands, with a better tts engine.

So staying the course with speech to text dictation?

I get the feeling he's talking phone/hardware wise too. I think he also nailed it. Plateau... There will be quad cores and most likely someone is going to stick a 6 core in one eventually. Camera marketing will stop somewhere around 536mp meaningless as the watt ratings on most amps. But this is where I think the turning point is from that new double fast phone dropping each week on the hardware side and the next best optimizations will be software. IMO.

I'm hoping they nail video chat on the go! HD faces even on low end devices.

After the Nexus

I am infatuated with my phone. I love it more than any inanimate object I have ever know.
Perfection.
However, I feel the need to become more mainstream. I want a tablet.
I want one that has a community like this, i.e. hundreds of devs catering for one device.
Any suggestions are welcome.
If my post is incoherent, ask me what I'm on, and what girl caused it.

I agree with you about Asus though. I just wish Moto and the others would start interacting with their customers and keep them informed. I've got a TF101 and have been really impressed with how Asus have kept people informed. Asus UK even asked what issues we would like them to raise with their engineers when they visited them earlier this year.

The way we think about our nexus

When a new phone comes we all wonder, man the new htc is what I want and it has better camera, and the gps is amazing and SIRI wannabe, quad core exynos and 1080p super amoled +(this would be too much lol) ... I just want you guys to remember the we live in the best years of our lives and we don't appreciate it sometimes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1CZTLk-Gk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Now I can say for myself that I still think galaxy nexus is the best phone in the market even tho s voice and quad core is coming out, I don't really needed and I think I won't use it(had Siri for 6 months and didn't use it much ) and I hope this help for people that always think about the next big thing.
You're right... we do live in the best years of our lives.... but its also made us too reliant on technology and a bunch of spoiled brats...
I was around for all those things he spoke of in the Video and can relate... but I guess everything is relative to every generation... Each one more spoiled then the previous.
Guess in 30 years when our cars fly themselves this generation would be like "Damn, we used to drive, uphill, bothways, on a paved road!"
Lol
Lol. This was great.

Louis is amazing, thanks for the post lol
but yeah, people expect so much and are quick to dismiss something great based off one thing they aren't attracted to... kind of sad but that's the way the world works now, its only the few that can appreciate something's significance and the rest just complain that it isn't good enough.
We gotta hand it to the 2nd group of people though, the ones who are never happy are the ones innovating and providing the rest of us with cooler things although I believe everyone should appreciate everything regardless

I stopped into the att store today and played around with the one x they had in there. Man it was beautiful in white and in grey. The fit and finish is amazing and the screen is gorgeous... looks a bit better than my GSM nexus and the look of the device was nicer as well. Too bad the rest of the experience let me down. I don't know if it was sense or what but it wasn't nearly as snappy. I know its got more muscle but it hangs in spots for some reason and browsing on it sucked! What's the point in all that beauty and horsepower when the function of the phone doesn't respond in kind? I'd love for the next nexus to be a bit more pretty in design but this thing just works. The major failure in android so far is that manufacturer customization so far has mostly detracted from the function of the phone compared to stock. The galaxy nexus, in GSM form at least is still the high bar other android phones need to measure against. I love this phone. For that, I don't think I'll have a real choice in the future between a nexus and any others. Unless a non nexus gets true stock android there will probably be something letting it down. I think the one x or others could be as good or better overall than this phone if they had just included some phone specific apps to differenciate and left everything else stock and unlocked.
Before anyone says to just put on cm or other aosp on those other devices, unless they are unlocked and have drivers available, they tend to have things missing or unstable when going stock android.

It hit me the other day that I've actually had this phone for almost half a year. It still feels brand new to me, and I marvel at how fresh it still feels with minimal maintenance.
My GS1, Desire HD, and Focus never quite ticked all the boxes, and I had to jump through hoops to get them to operate how I wanted then to. My one and only wish is for the next Nexus to be Note-sized (I pretty much only read books on my phone now). That's not happening, so I'm as pleased with the Nexus as I'll ever be with a phone.

If thats true, that sucks for the people who just bought it. I dont think google is that cruel.
Could be a new device category. Android chrome book? Project glass? Improved Nexus Q? They've established a nexus line with the 4,7, and 10 so the only logical thing to do is expand on it.
I'd like to see Google expand the Nexus range by releasing some sort of budget smaller-screen Nexus phone that can go on sales in the Play Store (was hoping the Galaxy Nexus would continue to be sold on the Play Store as a budget device but they ended up just completely removing it). Probably not a good idea to launch a new Android version on a budget phone though lol.

Yes, that's exactly what I was implying in my previous post that Google should have sold the GN alongside the N4 with a reduced price as a budget option, but they decided to discontinue it.
If they managed to get a top end device made for ridiculously cheap why not a mid level one for even cheaper. Everyone benefits (probably except phone manufacturers and retailers who are still trying to sell unlocked phones at ridiculously inflated prices).

I have a Nexus S 4G and from what I've experienced from a friends Gnex and read online about the Gnex, can REALLY say it's a mid-level phone? It might be on the lower end of high-end... But IMHO its still not a mid-level phone... Its better for everyone that they don't sell the Gnex cheaper because that would drop the resale value and essentially saturate the market with a "cheap" phone... Not saying the phone is cheaply made, but people think a phone is cheap if its not +300...

Maybe mid-level isn't the right word, but it's definitely not one of the current high-end phones. Anyway Apple, for example, has always been selling their previous models with reduced prices as a budget offering so it's not a strange concept. Anyway, saturating the market with good but cheap(er) phones isn't exactly a bad idea. If anything it encourages more manufacturers to make better, cheaper phones to stay competitive, which is good for consumers.

Sold nexus 4 kept nexus

So I ordered a nexus 4 awhile back and then got a sweet deal on a galaxy nexus. After my nexus 4 came in the mail i played with it awhile and realized the quad core was only really good for gaming, the 2 gigs of ram is good if you use alot of widgets i suppose but i don't. after taking everything into consideration i decided i liked my nexus better. nexus 4 was going for 5 to 600 on craigslist.sold nexus 4 for 550 and bought 1 year of straight talk minutes for nexus.. WIN!!

Not true. I loved my Galaxy Nexus, but it just started chugging for me. For basic operations, it was fine, but it started to lag here and there. Also, the screen's protective layer started peeling off and it was annoying to scroll or just generally slide my finger on the screen. I thought those were good enough reasons to switch, so I sold my Galaxy Nexus for $250, and paid $170 extra for a lot more horsepower, but I will probably not enjoy the glass back and the non-removable battery.

Its more open than both the s4 pro and tegra 3. And it is in a nexus device. The nexus 10 which had no problems getting into aosp. The s4 based nexus 4 had trouble with licensing. The exynos is not closed it just took samsung forever to get documentation out for the exynos 4. The exynos 5 is used in a nexus device and will have extensive documentation. Much better than what people will have to deal with on s4 pro. Qualcomm is propably one of the most closed soc makers out there.

Glad you're happy with your choice, but a bit confused about the description.... I've yet to hear of a protective layer on the Galaxy Nexus screen that could peel off, unless you're talking about the plastic film on the screen that you are supposed to remove when unboxing the phone. The glass is a"fortified" glass, similar to gorilla glass, hardened based on composition, heat and pressure. There has been speculation about an oleophobic coating, but that would be a chemical bath if anything, not any kind of peelable layer.... I believe you may be the first to report a peeling galaxy nexus screen...
Regarding your observation that it started to lag... there is nothing in the hardware that would age or degrade and cause lagging. The battery is perhaps the only part that ages with use, and that can be replaced in a minute or two. If you were seeing lag, it was likely due to configuration or an app taking more than its share of resources. Apps link Currents like to do background syncing, and when they do, your only indication that it's happening is a lagging UI in whatever else you're doing. A bit of house cleaning, or even a ROM and/or kernel update could probably have made the device fly again...

IMO that's why the Nexus 4 is not in AOSP and why the Nexus4 may not see full AOSP support, but instead a more hobbled form. It probably wouldn't have an effect now, but down the road it will. The only other Snapdragon Nexus was the Nexus One.

Dont buy z10.....my company gave it and battery only lasts 2-3 hours with normal use.....and My note lasts 10-12 hours with heavy use.
I use to be the BlackBerry king.... But at the end of the day a BlackBerry is just that a BlackBerry and the Note is the phone of the gods! Super fast, killer battery and much more.

I love the note. I just wanna try the new platform. I never had anything biased opinions on which platform is better. In fact I like ios. Just isn't intuitive as android in terms of customization.
So the battery sucks on the z10?

If you go from note 2 to a z10, you will be really upset about the battery life.

The one thing about the qnx os, mm is its smooth, the n4 is the only phone ive used that compares. The web browser on my Playbook was awesome.
The app world is horrific, you will have a hard time adjusting. I would wait for the next gen of BlackBerry to pick up a device.

BB? They are 4% of the smartphone market. Remember betamax?

Lol, i do, but if he's talking about getting his dad the note 2 he's probably not old enough to remember that
I lost interest in the Z10 after watching this review. It reminded why I didn't like my Blackberry Playbook.
These are excellent points. I am a power user, hence being a road warrior. But I wanna try nexus 4 now... Do it or don't? And why?

No wifi calling on N4. That may/may not be important to you but it is a deal breaker for me.

Do it I put my note 2 away for a while and am enjoying this nexus. First two days where tuff but the nexus is sweet,I would not trade my note over it.

Do you really need to think about this? Lol
I'll sum it up.
Android (and particularly Samsung) has taken over the mobile handset industry for a reason.... because everything else is boring as ***k and not original.
A what Berry?

To be honest, on my playbook, the os is superb, using bezel gestures as opposed to buttons is awesome. Android didn't catch up until jelly bean ( 4.2 project butter surpasses it) If BlackBerry can get the app support, and a phone with a decent screen, I would think about it, but for sure not the first generation of bb10. I would have to wait to see if the app world catches up. And for them to debug it. Love my note 2 and nexus 4 too much.

BB is 3% of the smartphone market. The writing is on the wall. App support will never happen. No one wants to develop for the 3%
